  1. If yotu pc is visible on the lan it means your pc name, workgroup & ip are ok. In control panel, under folder options -> view select the last item "simple file & folder sharing". In each share you define you can select the share level for password free access from your local network. Or you can simply drag your shared partitions/volumes to "Shared Documents" under My Computer.
  2. Is your monitor properly defined & selected in your display peroperties? If the oem supplied files are creating problems it is best to leave it at plug and play monitor. If the display is off center use the monitor's osd to correct this. Selecting a proper vertical refresh rate usually solves trhe problem.
  3. First & foremost you have not mentioned the size of your hdd. This can be the determining factor for the approach. I have used a slightly different approach. I have multiple boot partitions on my a20 gb hard disk. One each for me, my wife & my daughter. I use BootItNG boot manager to select the boot partiton. It can selectively expose /hide the partiton for each selection. I leave the programs on the c: drive so these don't interfere with other boot partitions. Once one partition is properly configured & activated it is a simple matter to clone the partition so it is ready to go. You can resize the partition so that all the kazaa & other shared files for your children remain on their C: partition. The boot manager will also allow you to create image files for easy restoration. These images can be on unused portion of the hdd & can be set so they can never be accessed under windows so these remain safe from all OSes. So far as safety of your data is concerned I would move it to a different partition, preferably a fat32 one, for easy retrieval even under DOS.
  4. You would need these only if your oher pc is running win98/me. These should be on the Lexmark CD itself. If the other pc is XP you don't need to install the 98 drivers. My experience of Lexmark drivers is not very good. They are quite flaky & don't always work properly, especially if it is a usb attached printer. This holds true for even the ones that are available on their own site.
  5. Looks like people like to come up with more complex answers than what is required. The 4dos or 4nt solution I offered would go something like this. "global copy c:\data\*.csv c:\csvfiles\ " without the quotes wherein global parses all the subdirectories & in each directory runs the command that follows. Global can be used with any other valid command like xcopy, move, del, etc. You can use the standard switches for the dos/4dos copy command to overwrite older files or what ever you want.
  6. This is more than likely a hardware fault. You can boot from BartPe with "Everest Ultimate Edition" system monitor on it. Open this application & monitor the voltages. especially the 5 volt. Also monitor the cpu temperature. I have also seen situations where the 5v supply on the motherboard was ok but that supplied to the 2 different ide cahnnels was fluctuating wildly. If you see fluctuations greater than say 0.15 v or the voltage is below 4.75 v you should go out and buy a substantially higher capacity power supply. It might be a good idea to connect an accurate VOM to the hdd power connector & monitor it under different load conditions. Another thing to lookout for is the size shown in your bios. Although the bios may not support 80 gb winxp will support it & give you access beyond 32 gb. However if you reformat it under win98 you will run into all kinds of problems.
  7. In folder options in contol panel turn off the option of "Remember Each folder's View Option". All folder's in future will open to your set options.
  8. Download the current version of 4dos, which is now free, & lookup the information on global function. It will work like a charm. If you are willing to pay for it you can opt for 4nt.
  9. Just as you create a ghost image of a partition you can create an iso of the same partition. In a utility called filedisk you can mount this iso & should be able to edit files on it.
  10. I figured as much. The on line scanning service/site is no longer available. Typical Symantec way of working. I tried jetico but was not very comfortable in configuring it. It offers very few options or feedbacks. I like Kerio but would be too much of a pain for a newbie client with all the popup conmfirmations. If you let it do quietly the end user would not get anywhere except on his pc.
  11. The program is called cathy. Although it was originally designed for the purpose you seek I use it on my desktop to quickly find files/folders I need.
  12. I believe this mode is esentially for identical drives.
  13. You can't simply enable raid. You will have to do a full configuration with utility from the controller's manufacturer. Honestly it does not make sense to configure a single disk to raid. If your controller is on an addon card you are in big time trouble unless it has a decent bios & memory resident on bootup.
  14. Yes. It still can't download. Please read my post. I don't know what it has done to the system but downloading is impossible.
  15. There has been application called run.exe available for a long time from makers of cathy.exe to run applications/ batch files in the background without any window being created.
  16. This usually happens when the temp within the cabinet rises too much. I have known quite a few power suppies dropping their output substantially when they run hot. It might help to run software like aida32 / everest ultimate & monitor the temperatures & voltages.
  17. After trying most of recommended firewalls I am at present working with Sygate Personal (Free) version. The software seems to be functioning well but I cannot download any files through my Download accellerator nor with any of the browsers. I looked hard to find some setting which would permit me to do this but to no avail. It however does not obstruct/block virus definition file downloads. I can't download files even if I turn off firewall, not even if I terminate the application. Sygate site is for whatever reason not accessible. Can anyone of you experienced Sygate users point me in the right direction? I am tired of having to switch my downloads to a different PC just for downloading files. Any & all help would be appreciated. Thanks.
  18. Absolutely, unless you moved your My Documents folder to a different drive as also your temp file folder.
  19. In this kind of situation you should religiously delete the hidden devices once you are through using them. The next time anyone plugs in a usb device it will leave a trace but won't prevent data theft. The best way would be to disable the usb support in bios. Those onboard usb connectors on the PCs are the number culprits for data theft in corporate environment.
  20. I have a question for all you guys who recommend Server 2003. How can one afford or justify the cost of a server licence when all you need is a desktop. It requires activation on day one so you can't even experiment during the normal 30 day period just to see what it is like. I wonder how you guys do it. Any suggestions?
  21. On a couple of occassions I have found the power & sata connectors on the hdd to be the culprits. I have had this experience with branded packged MOBOs such as MSI, ASUS & Gigabyte. These have a tendency to not connect too fiormly. I have not had problems on sata drives with intel, nForce or via chipsets. If you are using something else my comment would not be valid. Till date I have never had to use F6 switch to install any driveres on any mobo. These are required ony in case of some exotic hardware that you may have. Your system should install & run normally albeit slowly without the sata drivers. Perhaps you have to set it in NON raid mode on the mobo. If your full capacity is visible in Bios it has to install otherwise you have some other hardware problem.
  22. This has more to do with the chipset within your external drive as well as your USB port. I went out & bought one pci usb2 adapter & one usb ide casing to support my 160 gb hdd which was not supported in bios. The external drive icons would simply play hide & seek in exlorer. Ultimately I simply had to dump it due to frequent corruption of data. I have faced asimilar problems with front panel connected USB ports. Your best bet woud be to try extension cable connected to the onboard usb port adjacent to audio or ps/2 connectors on the mobo itself. I don't know it it will help you but it definitely resolved my problems.
  23. I used to have similars problems with pre sp1 XP. Unless I was connected to the internet Help feature simply would simply refuse to work. I never could fiund any solution to it. Come sp-1 the problem was resolved.
  24. Use 4NT as a replacement for cmd.exe It can do really fancy stuff. You can also try 4dos version 7.5 which is now free.
  25. Your USB connected modem may have an external power supply. You could try switching it on after the boot process has finished. Might be an easier task then trying to refresh the device manager list.
