  1. As far as I know, 'Windows Powered' was the name of a planned version of W2K for mobile devices that was canceled and never released. That was my understanding, at least. So you may have something there worth holding on to .
  2. One additional note - make sure you don't get fooled into getting a "TurboCache" card - there is nothing "Turbo" about them .
  3. I've acquired a copy of NT 3.51 and would like to play around with it for nostalgia's sake I guess but I have a few questions on how to go about this - my system has no floppy drive so I can't use the floppy disks that come with NT. Is there anyway to make a bootable image of the install CD like NT4+ has? Secondly, I'm not that familiar with pre NT4 NTFS and really haven't found much documentation on it - so to those who are familiar with it - I ask what happens when you install (for multi boot) an NT3 partition in NT3's NTFS and then install a higher operating system such as 2003. My understanding is that 2003 will take the wonderfully wise course of 'upgrading' my partition to the new NTFS version. As I have found no patch or documentation for a patch to let NT3 read/write modern NTFS partitions, I figure this would kill my data. I really hate the FAT file system for a variety of reasons so I don't want to just go the easy route and make a small fat partition. So is there any workaround to let NT3 keep its own partition in the native legacy NTFS format or do I need to hide the partition from 2003? On another note, I have also acquired a copy of NT 3.1 but it appears attempting to play around with this will prove futile. I'll ask the same questions as above anyway - with the additional note of wondering whether you can get IDE optical drives to run with pre-SP3 NT3.1. Yes I've been called weird for wanting to run these obsolete (useless?) operating systems/software - I just like learning/seeing where things have come from and playing around with it. I'd still run NT 4 on everything if it would allow me to run all my software. Thanks in advance, Chris.
  4. Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Enemy Territory mainly, sometimes Call of Duty 2 & Day of Defeat.
  5. iirc, NT4 has a limit of 7.8 gigs on the boot partition no matter what service pack you install. So make sure not to go above that when you're partitioning.
  6. I have a relatively new laptop with a GeForce Go 6600 graphics card in it. NVIDIA doesn't support the Go series in their releases so I have to obtain the drivers and the INF from a third-party. My question is, how difficult will it be to get the NVIDIA NT4 drivers to work? My understanding is that the only thing that needs to be changed is the INF with the vendor ID info in it. Is this correct and how difficult of a proposition would this be? Thanks!
  7. Aww no NT 3 & a half & a bit . Perhaps the best thing MS ever did was NT 3.51, 2000 giving it a run for the money. But yah, 2000 beats XP easily in my book and will be noticeably more stable than 98. Plus you'll get better support in apps/games.
  8. why do you want IE7? it isnt ready and have many bugs? if you want other browser than IE6, try maxthon or Opera or Firefox or safari or other browser... i dont believe there are trial window downloadable.... There are trials of Server 2003 and XP x64 I believe. I downloaded the trial version of Server 2k3 before I bit the bullet and shelled out the dough for it. License is for 180 days (or was at the time I got my copy).
  9. Mess.be had a patch out that let it work in 2K. I ran it on my 2K install and it worked flawlessly. Dig around a little on the Mess site and you should find it.
  10. I'm quite fond of the firewall included with V-COM's SystemSuite, which is based on Sygate. I'm not happy at all about Symantec buying them out, as it seems Symantec products have become so bloated as to be almost unusable in recent years.
  11. I love Shareaza, especially with the recent release of 2.2.0.x. LimeWire is great also, and I prefer BitComet for downloading torrents as it is much lighter than Azureus being that it is written in C++.
  12. Yes, that it does. That's the one thing I really miss about NT/2k/xp, ect...the ability to perform tasks in DOS. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try it out. Chris.
  13. $59.99 for 6/768 Cable (Adelphia). Supposedly they are bringing their 16/2 service into the area soon which is, again, supposedly, going to cost the same...
  14. I tried installing both 98SE and ME (yes, you read right, ME) on my desktop with a gig of RAM and I couldn't even complete the install. Windows would just hang right after the first reboot when it's supposed to detect hardware. Is the only way to install it to remove RAM? Certainly there has to be a better way. Is there any install file that can be modified to set it up correctly OOB? Thanks, Chris.
  15. Umm have you installed Service Pack 1? It has DX 9.0c.
  16. It's annoying because I don't like being treated like a thief when the software I have is 100% legit. Same goes with "genuine advantage". Just one more thing to annoy the legal users and make the illegal ones laugh...& on the thread topic - personally I like Server 2003. I've used every other "modern" version of Windows and it offers the best blend of compatibility with stability & speed. Sure, it's a server o/s, sure it's not made for gaming, but I'll take it any day over XP. It also comes with the benefit of not having as many hotfixes to download once you install it. Try to look at it from the other side. Microsoft loses millions of dollars per year on pirated copies of Windows. They've released certain software that is only available to those people who have actually purchased Windows. Not to mention that once you've activated, it takes copying two files over from your previous installation to avoid having to activate again. A whole 2 files!!! Lets say you go to download SyncToy. You go to the website - they check to see if you've actually bought it - you pass - you get to download! How on earth does that make you feel like a theif? They're giving you the right to download something extra once they know that you've actually paid them. For most of the pirates out there, they don't get to download. I really don't get this argument at all... And as for your recommendation, sure, endorse more piracy. Server 2003 Web edition is $399 and Server 2003 Standard edition is $999. Just another way to laugh I guess... Just to be somewhat helpful for the orignal question - Win2K or Linux. I can see your point, and this is how I 'wrote off' activation to myself when it came out. But the whole 'genuine advantage' thing, I mean, I understand their problems with piracy, but now you have the CD key - Activation - AND genuine advantage. Come on, eventually, enough's enough. And HOW am I endorsing piracy? I did not pirate my copy of Server 2003 (which happens to be Web Edition), nor did I ask anybody to pirate it. I simply expressed my opinion on the topic question.
  17. I have a laptop with an Intel 2915ABG Wireless connection and the all-knowing folks over at Intel wrote the driver so it wouldn't install on 2003. I'm wondering, how difficult is it to edit the driver INF so that it will install? Haven't done it before, so I'd like an idea of what I'm looking at. Thanks!

  19. I only use freeware anti-spyware software as I haven't found a need to buy a commercialy product yet. I use a combination of the MS Beta, Ad-Aware SE, & Spybot Search & Destroy and out of those I'd have to say I like Spybot S&D the best.
  20. I'm a die-hard NT4 fan and was discouraged recently when I received my new laptop and no NT4 drivers were available (for some reason I just assumed they'd be available). Anyway, before I build my new desktop system, are there any good hardware makers that still support NT4? Thanks, Chris.
