  1. firefox is better anyway. Internet Explorer has no way of disabling a page load delay, so if its slowed down by anything, it causes a problem right away.
  2. you can go into User Accounts and change the names of users, add passwords, delete passwords [provided you have the original] and make accounts public/private.
  3. my suggestions/thoughts on the matter: 1) from what i know, Vista can only be installed over XP Home/Pro Sp1 or higher 2) you may not have a full copy 3) it may have burned too fast, MS suggests burning it 1-2x to insure best quality. which vista are you trying to install, there are a bunch..
  4. i might get a 1, knowing my processor speed. but it works.
  5. my dad wont buy me a new computer i've got this one, and the one at school that i'll get back in 3 years [less if this craps out] when i go to college, this will boot linux, the other one will boot windows...but for now, i have to deal with what i've got
  6. well, i just want an overall idea of what to look for. of course if see something better thats PCI and still within the price range i may opt for that. but for now, i'm just looking for a general look of what i can get.
  7. your temps are normal. although the overheat protection may be set too low, thats not something i would have thought of. my motherboard is too old for the overheat protection and whatnot, so i can't really give any advice on it.
  8. its stereo for on this thing, im not quite sure what to say. i can even send you music i've recorded.
  9. i've got a packard bell microphone for a PC here, it is about 8 years old, its got a stero tip. also, i do record with this PC, which has stereo input/outputs right on the mobo. also, mono and stereo recording depends on the cables as well. but microphones are mono, but only lavaliers [clip on]. the actual mic piece only has two pieces, but its wired so that it carries through both channels, so that people with a stereo sound system hear it both ways, not just half.
  10. im saying firefox. even though i have used opera for a while, it never seemed so great, it would slow my computer down too much for my liking. also, with firefox, i can change pipelining, page delays etc. also, slowly its gaining more features, closed tabs and whatnot, view open tabs...lots of things that opera had, but wasnt as obvious.
  11. well, the battery is a last resort thing, and its only something to consider if the computer is 7+ years old. just because cables look good, doesn't mean they are. it may be internal damage to the powerpack. which can be caused by a power surge. if at all possible you should get the leads checked on the pack. my best thought on the subject is that theres a short circuit somewhere causing it.
  12. http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/drives/73de/ i saw that a while ago, as a potential for sharing music with a friend of mine, as his family has a 300GB HDD almost filled with music [im not joking]. if you read about that, it gives you the option to be able to remotely access the files on the internet and whatnot. its the only thing i know of that can do the job.
  13. late to the party, i know. you need two things really, any stereo amplifier, and Adobe Audition [for best results] only use Line In if you have an amplifier. if its not pre-amped when going in through line in, it will sound like its being played through a cardboard box. you open up adobe audition, and you press F10 while looking at the multi-track view [its all laid out, you'll see it] then when amplified, get the audio levels to about -3dB. -3 is standard for all mp3's. then, once you've leveled it out: click record on Adobe Audition, play the vinyl, and then split the tracks when each side is done. as an amplifier, you can use a receiver. not a guitar amp. if its not amplified, use microphone, as you can amplify that easily without a decrease in quality. IM me or whatever if you need that explained any better. i set up a 32point sound board at my schools radio station that can record into adobe audition from any source. when it comes to audio, im the main man for my school, as i've mastered adobe audition, and use it at home for recording SNL, concerts on TV, etc and so forth.
  14. my first plan isn't to get it off the internet if possible. i plan on seeing if theres a store that carries it in the area, then if all else fails i'll get it from newegg
  15. most motherboard have those LEDs as indicators, to show if it has an active powersupply. 1) you may have a bad powersupply 2) your BIOS batter may need to be replaced 3) you may not have consistent power supply for the computer from the wall you may also want to check the power button leads, make sure they aren't falling off or anything. a cable may be loose, something may be touching something that shouldn't be. there are more questions than solutions for this.
  16. might i also add that compressed air does not cause liquid, it causes momentary frost, that evporates about as fast as it got there.
  17. my dad has had similar problems somewhat like that, where one stick is DDR2, another is [whatever you call it] old RAM. your computer may not recognize DDR2, or its a faulty chip. also, smaller RAM chips [in terms of MB] always go in slot 1. larger chips always go in slot 2. if they're equal it doesn't matter.
  18. wireless antenna are connected through wires coming off either a removeable card [similar to a laptop Wireless internet card] or off the circuitboard entirely. i only know because i have two wireless D-Link routers [one is faulty] which one has a removeable card and one is off the board. if you open it and it has the removeable card, that may have come loose, either that or its just the small cable that goes to the antenna that is moving around which is no big deal. you may want to open it up and look. better safe than sorry, its not hard to get them apart or back together.
  19. crappo..thats not good... ok, no more making an 4$$ out of myself.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...82E16814145087R thats it, more or less a similar item, leaves room for a newer moniter [if that ever happens]. and its more or less what the other one is anyway.
  20. this isn't really meant as a bump for the topic [it really isnt] but is this a good final choice? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814143052 it has what i need, and its vista ready. i would ramble on about the whole new 'vista compatible' stickers but im not in the mood.
  21. you say that, but i haven't had problems with it. i've only got minimal programs installed, AV, MS Works, Photoshop...basic things, actually i don't think i have photoshop on it...i think i actually have Gimp...but im running XP right now so i can't exactly check.
  22. compressed air, yes. air compressor, no. an air compressor just blows air at a much higher rate. if you take a can of compressed air, and you turn it over and spray it, it will spray frost. i know because when i blow out my computer, i use the same compressor that my dad uses to but air in the tires of family cars. the air is actually room temperature, or close, about 68-70 degrees F. and also, i've seen pictures of the overclocked computer cooled with liquid nitrogen. if that doesn't harm the motherboard, what will it terms of cold and hot?
  23. but all computer microphones are stereo. all computer inputs are stereo. i use Adobe Audition, and i can honestly say mic input on all computers is stereo. also, microphones are grounded to decrease feedback buzzing, and they all have 3 pins. thats stereo
  24. well, yes and no. quality can always be lost in re-recording. it depends on the output source and the input source. if you re-record music on your computer, always use the speaker output, and the mic input. reason being, microphone does not require any pre-amplification. line-in does. also, never use adapters if possible. find ways to make straight cables. the more adapters used, the less quality regained. but also, in recording, you cannot change bitrate. you can only change bitrate in ripping.
  25. disable windows messenger in the services list. that may be it.
