wheres the mobo in that mess? jk what type of mobo is that? i have one from 1999 that could have that many SCSI drives, but it'll only have IDE, for the speed really. i could get a 250GB SATA drive, but i have no SATA plugs on any of my computers, making it somewhat useless. although my Super S2DGU has two UW SCSI inputs and one UltraSCSI inputs along with 2 IDE and a floppy...it is a server really, but i don't have a PSU for it. [bummed by that] i should be getting one soon. -
why not just buy a 1.1GHz celeron off ebay? it is a 370pin socket right? if so, just hop onto ebay and look for a faster 370pin processor...im no big fan of overclocking, too many risks. i have a ton of processors out of computers at the dump..i pulled one out that i regret [466MHz] but all the others are 866+...i have them as a backup for my old tower in case it dies. in fact, it almost did a while ago. if you've got xppro on it, just opt for a faster processor, it'll last longer.

its gonna be a good computer, without a doubt. i dont have a custom computer yet, but i'm slowly saving up for one, its a pretty wasteful system, i have all of it planned out now, 4GB of SDRAM, 3.4GHz processor, 256MB SDRAM dual DVI out PCI-E x16 graphics, zalman 9500, 420W PSU, all packed into an x-clear acrylic case. fairly mindless, runs out to be just under $1000, but it'll be high end for a while.

as long as you keep the dust out of them, power packs will last a long time. the PC im running now has a 150W PSU, original to the 5 year old computer, the only thing not original is the HDD, right now im using my sisters because i can't get the 100GB drive working. once i do, thats what i'll be using. its just how i roll. 450 is plenty though for his setup, its not like its a duplicator or some other computer that needs a powerplant and a half to turn on.

the new HDD is great, plenty of room, fast transfer speed, everything you could need. vista ready is kinda BS. this machine is 1.1GHz, has 256MB of RAM, and used an nVidia GeForce FX5200 and i could run vista easily. and by easily, i mean i could run it just like XP runs, it loaded quick, didn't freeze, did what i needed it to do. if i can run Vista on 1.1GHz with 512MB of RAM, you're setup could run vista with ease. the heatsink you chose for the processor [at least from what i've seen] is a very highly recommended heatsink, its reliable, and keeps even the hotter processors cool. all i have to say is that if you want the new system to last you into vista, don't overclock it. overclocking does give you faster clock rates etc., you dont really need it. as easily as you could buy something cheap and overclock it, you're buying a new one soon. if you but a processor at the speed you would overclock another too, it'll last longer, one saves you buying a processor, the other saves you a little money in the start, but it can't take quite the beating you give it all the time. if you want it a little faster, get a faster processor, don't try to overclock, it doesn't always end well. 450 watts could power almost two computers like that one, its a fine supply with extra just in case you decide you're going to power a generator too [jk]. 450 is plenty.

i do know what you're talking about. In the preferred networks list it has Voyager [me] and hpsetup [other wireless]. as many times as i do remove hpsetup from the list, it constantly comes back, which is my main problem.

i reapplied my WEP, now i'm trying a different channel, thanks for the suggestion, i'll see how well it works

you can overclock almost anything in a computer with a clock rate. its just is it safe to do so. whats this P3 running? if its booting linux, 700 or 866 doesn't make a difference. you said you were using mandrake, why not try ubuntu? just a different grub environment. still good ol' linux. ubuntu can boot in about 2 minutes or less on a 1.1GHz processor [from experience] and about 1 minute on a 1.4GHz processor. is it a server or a just a normal linux installation?

processor and mobo match [a person i know had missed that once, almost cost him $500] RAM is more than you could ever need, 2x 1 gig is fine, but 2x 512 is more realistic, what could you ever need 2 GB of RAM for unless you're doing intense video editing, and even still i've done that on 512... graphics are lookin good, can't see a thing wrong with the setup. if you want performance, you might look into SATA drives, now up to 3GB/s if im not mistaken by something, sure beats IDE. im assuming you're using the floppy and CD[or DVD] from the computer you have now. what OS are you planning on? XP [home/pro]? pro is a little lighter than home, easier to tweak and nLite, also is the comp for gaming or what, because if its just for basic needs, you could go down to a 2GHz processor and it wouldn't matter. if its for gaming, then the setup is perfect with 1 or 2 GB of RAM, it doesn't really matter either way unless you're going for highest end gaming thats completely unnecessary to anyone... case looks nice by the way

well, i've never had issues with the router, and i don't exactly have money for a new router [although on monday thats pretty much all going to change] drivers are as current as i can get them...im just wondering why it drops the signal and then connects to hpsetup, which is a weak to pathetic signal that i don't know where it originates...my signal is 11.0MB/s, the hpsetup one is 2.0 if that. my other problem is my belkin wireless internet card...my computer doesn't even recognize its there, i tried manually installing hardware and i couldn't find it for balls. my biggest question is how to get my computer to stick with my wireless, which is named Voyager..only kept it because the person who gave me the router had it like that, and i didn't want to change too much. my other D-Link router is an absolute piece of junk, a DI-624 i think, supposed to give me 54.0MB/s but it just drops the signal after less than 2 minutes, and i can't return it or anything. those are the only wireless routers i have, i was thinking of getting one of the USB wireless things, in the hopes that it works better, but i felt like asking before buying which is usually a smart idea. i tried removing hp setup from the list of networks that my computer keeps, but after a little bit it just reconnected to that...its just kinda bugging me. also it kills the whole idea of using aim because it makes you wait if you try to sign on 15 times in 60 seconds or whatever...yea..im thinking of getting another router and running a cat5 from the other room in there, but if i can avoid it, i want to. ~edit~ i had a thought. would taking off the WEP solve it to any extent? i removed the WEP, it seems to be a lot steadier. anyone know why? im not quite understanding why.

so i got the PC running up in my room just like i wanted, already connected to the digital 5.1 sound system, but the wireless internet connection is killing me. sometimes it'll last 5 minutes, sometimes not even that. i can access basically everything i really need, but i want the wireless connection to work better. give or take about 3 feet left or right, im just about right above the router. its a D-Link 614+ that gives an 11MB/s signal, that my computer receives about 4/5 bars according to the wireless internet properties. there is a very weak signal coming from my neighbors as well and im wondering if i can make my computer completely ignore that. i don't really want to run a cat5 up here being as thats a very tricky thing to do, especially the way the routers are set up. does anyone know any software or tips that can help me? i really hate having to reconnect so much, its driving me up the wall. i want to be able to do more than just edit music on this. the wireless card in my PC is a Linksys WMP11, which has never given me trouble before.

LCDs are also hard to clean...like the strange stains that appear on the display, very hard to get those off. whereas you don't have to be quite as gentle with a CRT..you can even use windex if you're careful.
-
you could also solve your issue by not running them. reduces the chances of getting a virus too. not to mention the chances of getting caught. i don't know many people who can afford $2000 a song. i sure as heck cant. i don't use any p2p software. if i want it, i buy it. if i don't have the money for it, i find a friend who has it. much safer. like im borrowing one of my teachers spools of CDs, that'll give me plenty of music

i know how you feel about the dead pixels. my moniter came with a dead pixel, but my dad didn't want to go through the trouble of trying to get another one or replacement...its very noticable, always red. and on a 15.4" LCD moniter, its not hard to find. drives me up the wall because i have dark color background images, and then theres a red dot. i went looking for CRT today, most people abuse them now, aren't worth much..if you're going for a CRT, at least get flatscreen, its a lot better looking than the slightly convex lenses of CRT moniters.

when in doubt use firefox give it a few plugins, a skin here and there. and you might try upgrading to WMP10.
-
adware or spyware, possibly a virus....best bet would be reinstalling windows. i don't know what else goes for .dll files

ok, for the sake of ending the argument, you try opening photoshop with 50% CPU usage without trying to kill the processor. i used paint. done with. i took the IDE controller out, becuase it said that it failed to boot. first time i had the problem, and i dont want it to happen again. the next time i got to comp USA, which will be in 2 or 3 weeks, i'll have them take a look at it, see if they can tell me anything extra because it seems to cause an error in booting. yesterday nothing was wrong, so im going to guess that it has something to do with the IDE controller, but no bets, i don't want it to happen again.
-
can't exactly compress them without killing the quality...the object is to be able to see whats being showed...i posted the highest numbers that stood out in the list. everything else is normal.
-
can't say for sure what made that happen. i put in my ATA/66 PCI card, had my DVD+RW drive going into it, and when i turned this thing on, it said it had some problem booting, so i turned it off, took out the drive and PCI card, then rebooted. it then gave me an error on reboot about an error with my PCI ethernet card. i didn't want to go through too much bs, so i let it go and continue booting normaly. it started correctly, but the processor usage was very heavy, lowest of 38%, highest 100% and sometimes it held a steady 100% for a few minutes. the problem ended, but i found three processes that used lots of CPU, and they are: svchost.exe - 14,848K explorer.exe - 17,008K vsmon.exe - 17,328K it took my computer a very long time to load things on boot when it happened..mostly the internet connections, and firewall. avast and audio started somewhat quickly. the only programs i had running were cpu-z, to moniter my clock speed and voltage so i'd see if it went too far over [and it did several times] and trillian, to talk to amanda [very long story] and then task manager to watch usage. here are the pics in links: http://www.freewebs.com/bonestonne/processorfritz.bmp http://www.freewebs.com/bonestonne/processorfritz2.bmp

ok, im a little afraid of this computer overheating right now, because i'm seeing a steady 100% CPU usage, and i dont know whats causing it. thats when it started to go down, but now its back at 100% those are the processes running at the time. its still way up there, any ideas as to whats causing it?
-
oh boy, thats not a fun thing to happen. the graphics card is overheating, and theres no way around it. i had similar problems with a PCI Genoa Phantom, even buying a chipset cooler didn't help any. best thing to do is get a new card. even a used card would work, but the one your using will just start to die if it keeps up. how well is your case ventilated? also, is it AGP or PCI?

thats awesome about the best i can do is have a PCI ATA/66 card in my comp and then have ODDs and the masters and HDD's as the slaves...it looks interesting because i usually just let it hang out onto my desk but im thinking of playing musical computers, taking this thing upstairs with the sound card, and having the 1.4GHz down here with no sound...we'll see, i think i still need sound all over, but i want the faster computer down here..its an interesting situation for one who has little money to spend.
