Max, how much data do you have ? Is it 500 MB, 1 GB, 5 GB ? Be aware of the fact that you have to store that "copy" somewhere. And if that's a couple of gigabites, your current HD won't do the job.

Maybe a system repair (with the XP-cd) is not the worst of ideas. Seeing your other post about the media-player your system is likely in need of a quick repair. So if I were you, I would boot from the XP-cd (if you have one) and choose the R for system repair..

Well, obviously I am spoiled then... Anyway, Good Luck and let me know how it "ends" ...

Max, Your problem is that you don't have the space to store your image, isn't it ? I don't know how large your current HD is, but of you want to make a copy of your whole HD (system + data), it wouldn't even fit on a DVD. So I guess the only brave thing to do is to take the afternoon off and do clean install.. Actually, I always prefer to make a fresh, new start when I get a new HD. But that's just me...

I don't know exactly, it's an onboard controller (Fujitsu Siemens) Unfortunately, I'm @work right now, so I can't check it..

marthax, I also have a serial ATA HD, but whenever I boot from CD to do a new install or whatever, the partitions on my harddrive are always visible. The fact that SATA needs drivers, as you mention it, is new to me. I don't say you're wrong, but I've not heard of it yet.. @Zxian: I'm only reffering from my own experience. I had this problem also once, and i copied the file to every folder I thought was important, but it just didn't work. @Marthax: Have a look at this site, there're a couple of solutions: NTLDR ISSUE GOOD LUCK !

First of all: Did you keep (by accident) a floppy in your floppy drive ? Otherwise: 1) If you did some tweaking in your BIOS, reset it to default ! 2) If not, take a Windows XP Bootable CD, let it boot, choose for REPAIR ®. Don't waste time by simply copying the NTLDR-file from a floppy to the C:\ or the system32 folder.... it won't work.

As cheesy as it sounds... I'm quite satisfied with my own install, so there's no need for me to tweak. Though I appreciate all the effort you guys take to improve XP !!

I saw this question once in another forum. Those guys were going on and on and on about this file being an trojan, a virus, spyware or just a plain window-file. Nobody knew actually. IMO it is just a MS file to keep the Firewall running. You're right about that. If you disable the Windows firewall, you will notice that the ALG.exe will disappear from the taskmanager. Or you can permanently disable (at startup) it through SERVICES.msc.. edit: But please don't believe any info about this file being a virus or a nasty trojan. I know, some info on the net can be very convincing, but it's all bull...

I had the same problem once ! This is how I resolved it. (just type "3721 Spyware" in Google and you'll get the same page. It looks like there has a combination of: 3721 - Chinese Search Engine 4-counter.com / icanfindit.net - "I Can Find It, Search For Pleasure" After a couple of research and experiment, I was able to remove them from the computer. Here is my 4-counter removal procedure: Open Task Manager and end these processes: helper.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\3721\helper.dll Deregister the above: regsvr32 /u C:\PROGRA~1\3721\helper.dll regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe Remove Run - "helper" key from the registry. Restart the computer - run one of the following Spyware. Ad-Aware Spybot Bazooka AdMuncher CWShredder Spyware Blaster WebRoot Spy Sweeper Hope it helps..

Even after the install (in Winrar that is) there is the option to disable the icons: options --> settings --> integration --> (un)check the box icons in context menu Zxian, this only disabled the icons. But okay.. you've solved the problem already ! Good for you.

I agree, with a nice (ghost-) image or a personalized install, you can be back on track within half an hour and you can f*** up your registry, system32, boot.ini or whatever as many times as you like.. If you use any Windows OS to its limits (or beyond), it's bound to crash once in a while. Needless to say, any Open Source OS will react the same. Maybe it takes a bit longer or it will not crash to the same extent a MS, but believe me... it will eventually. They all have their limits, my friend..

Dear Admins and everyone who is just curious about their system, Here's a nice website which gives quite a good insight in event-id's: EVENT-ID I liked it..

I guess you mean this one: Fathom color scheme If it's not, I'm sorry. If it's, you're welcome.. Cheers !

I guess it's something like this one: MSN Winks "...MSN Winks Plus automatically downloads winks and adds them in your MSN Messenger. The number of winks currently is over 60, but we will add more winks in the future. MSN Winks Plus can check the new version and download the new winks when we add them in the future..." Better uninstall I guess..

Hi ! Well, while surfing anonymously through this nice forum for a week I dediced to become a "member" cause it's really one of the more refined resources on the internet, microsoft-wise that is. I am working as a senior network-specialist for a company in the south of Holland, where I also live. But like many of you guys & girls, I am always learning and hope to do much of it here ! See you around !

Well, fortunately I work for a company that pays my books and exams. The target is to get your MCSE without training. Which books employees choose is up to them (I prefer the Sybase books), but that is about 50 euro's per book ( 35 pounds / 60 dollars) So that times 7 is about 350 euro's ( 245 p / 420 d) The exams are 140 euro's each time. So let's say you pass 5 of them in one time and you have to do two of them twice (and that's quite realistic I guess), then you have 9 times 140 = 1260 euro's, which is 865 pounds or 1520 dollars. So with a lot of self-studying you could be MCSE 2003 for about 1600 euro's / 1100 pounds / 2000 dollars... And all that for just some lousy piece of paper... btw: passed 5 already.. 2 more two go..

NHL, Players' Union Reach Labor Agreement
interminded replied to Zxian's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, finally !!! I'm so glad this mess has come to an end. Maybe it seems a bit odd, cause I'm leaving in the Netherlands, but I am a huge NHL fan !! I'm quite curious what the offical report has to say about what has been decided, once released. But I reckon it's like The Great One says: "There's really no winners in this one, we all lost ! " Anyways; Hockey is back baby !!! :) -
Just wondering: I read about the fact that it is possible to remove icon names on the desktop by renaming them with (ie) ALT-0160 etc.. Is it possible to not have icon names by default (on the desktop that is) ? It looks some much better without it IMO. Thanks in advance !
