My technique in situations like this involve "brute forcing" SP2 onto the system... I run into ALOT of people who are pre-sp2, and some that are even pre-sp1... I boot into safe mode and run viral and spyware scans, after getting everything clean I install SP2 from safe mode (NOT normal mode) and normally the system comes out way better in the long run... IF something goes wrong I use the "brute force" technique, which is basically use a Windows XP SP2 CD to perform a repair install on the system, which then basically reinstalls XP without destroying your registry, or software installs, and upgrades the system to SP2... I figure if XP doesn't want to take it, then I'll shove it down it's throat until it accepts it.... After all, it's either to fix something that's not conscious, than something that is... Of course, there was that one time at Best Buy that the computer department designated the techs with a task of killing a computer... We removed RAM, the CPU, the heatsink (AMD), disconnected the hard drive, the CD drive.... All while the computer was still in... Believe our surprise when not only did the system give a wide array of colors after removing the RAM, but once the RAM was put back in again it continued to install XP from where it left without a problem... Impressed we were....

Well, it appears to have gone away for now... Figures, but now BitTornado keep crashing when I close it... Not that it matters, the download completes successfully so I didn't lose anything, but ugh.... Anomolies....

I've got an all-in-wonder Radeon 9600XT, would downloading the MCE drivers allow the built in TV Tuner to work, or do I need to invest in a TV Tuner card? Edit: After further looking at the ATi site it would seem that if I download the encoder, I ought to be able to do this... Sir, if you were local to me I would give you a dozen cookies...

Take me a awhile to get at a machine with that board... I'm going to recreate my DVD since last time I did it XPize was installed and screwed up some of the processes... I migrated all of my materials from a machine that used 512mb SDRAM, to a machine that uses 1GB RDRAM, and gained 300Mhz in the process, but when I did that migration the 80GB drive I had my entire DVD research and development on was no longer recognized, and so all the my research and development tools and materials were lost, so now I have to rebuild.... Take me awhile...

So... The story thus far.... I decided to do a format and reload on my media server and staple in the Media Center components ala Ultimate XP in the Media Center area... So, that's done and my computer pretty much believes it is MCE2005, right down to the remote desktop login window.. Pretty spiffy... Anyways.... In order to make this whole "Media Server" thing work I basically use 2 accounts, one for display, and one for working... The display account is basically what shows up on the TV, and is what you use to watch movies, TV shows, etc etc... The second account I log into remotely using the concurrent connection tweak, thus allowing me to run downloads in the background on the machine while watching movies and stuff without sacrificing screen relestate due to crappy resolutions (I thought, and still do think this was a wise idea) Now, while I've got the proper timeserv.dll file, as I CAN log in remotely and concurrently using the two accounts... However, once logged in I get these explorer.exe errors, and while they annoying, they're not completely detrimental to what I do, that is to say the explorer.exe errors only affect the remote user (Not the person watching a movie), and they don't cause any downloads, movie editing, etc etc, going on in the background to fail, it's just the UI resets itself... And it does this constant, one of those windows that says "Want to send this information to microsoft?" pops up and I hit Don't Send and the UI resets, if I don't hit it, it stays ther without issue and I can use it normally, but it's damned annoying.... Anyways... BEFORE the format and reload the ATi, Microsoft OneCare, VIA Raidtool, Quicktime, X-Mystique audio, and iMon softwares all start pretty much on login... AFTER the format and reload, the Media Center components are now also present... So I doubt it's the media center components causing the issues... Thoughts?

32-bit machine in a 64-bit world...
Nakatomi2010 replied to Nakatomi2010's topic in Windows XP 64 Bit Edition
Error message I get is... The Program or feature "\??\D:\install\setup.exe" cannot start or run dur to an incopmatibility with 64-bit versions of Windows. Please contact the software vendorto ask if a 64-bit Windows compatible version exists... When going directly to setup.exe I get: The image file D:\install\setup.exe is valid, bot is for a machine type other than the current machine. If I copy an installed version of the game to the hard drive, it just tells me the CDs not in the drive, and none of the NoCD cracks work... The game was of course released back in 98/99.... Oh snap! I found a NoCD hack that has you copy all the movies to the hard drive, and has the needed registry entry to tell the machine everything is on the hard drive... Bitchin'.... -
I've got a few games I want to play that aren't compatible in XP x64 Edition, in this case Star Wars: Rebellion... With Empire at War coming out soon I've had a few nostalgic moments that've made me want to play it... So, I tried installing it on a 32-bit machine, copying the registry and files over, no dice... So... is there a virtual machine that'l run on x64 Windows and let me install a 32-bit operating system to play 32-bit games without all the effort of dual booting...?

Makes me feel stupid and old being 21 knowing that while I was 20 that I incorporated a then 17 year olds work into my everyday work life... Makes me feel stupid and old.... Kudos and happy birthday.... And I agree, with your current drivers record, you should have a license my now.... Keep on driving us...

I'm not entirely sure you understand what it is I was doing... I wasn't making a drive to drive copy, I was making an "generic" image so that I could install it on any other system. Since I was not always installing it on the same system the drivers would be constantly changing, so I don't think this would do it for me... No I haven't redone my ghost image for preliminary testing of the method, I just don't have the time lately...

Not initiating the shutdown count down...
Nakatomi2010 replied to Nakatomi2010's topic in Windows Post-Install Wizard (WPI)
If it doesn't finish wouldn't it keep the "Installing Application" window open? -
I think it's understand that Microsoft HAS abaondoned 98, except when there's a critical flaw that can't detrimentally affect system performance....

If you're referring to the command prompt in NT based machines, that's not DOS... It's a command line interface, very similar to DOS, but it's an entirely different engine. Where as Windows 9x was based on DOS, in NT based operating systems, it's "DOS" is based on Windows.... There was a kind of reversal of roles....

Exactly the reason why I made this post... It's a problem with nearly no answer online.... And I figure since MSFN most likely wont go dead, that this will now be in the forum archives....

Alright, here's the deal... One upon a time I decided that the fastest way to install Windows 98/ME would be to install it on one system, get all the updates and software, reboot the system into safe mode, delete the num key in the registry, then make a Ghost image, this in effect makes Windows think it's the first boot all over again, kind of... However, there was one issue which occasionally cropped up I was never able to solve. After SUCESSFULLY installing the audio drivers, no conflicts, nothing, the audio wont work. The ONLY thing that's noticeable as to why the audio wont work is that it is not listed in the preferred Audio devices, and I can't figure out how to fix it. I've googled, and googled, and then googled some more and have just NOT been able to find the solution on how to fix it. I'm not the only one who has this problem either, others have and it's always gone unresolved.... And it's not just because of my Ghosting method... I've got a machine behind me right now that play audio, despite the proper drivers being installed, it's running Windows ME... Any ideas on how to fix this? I REALLY want to find a solution... Edit: I suspect a .dll error, so which DLLs would I need to try "restoring" to an older version? Edit2: I did a tried Google one more time and chose my search line carefully, I search "preferred audio device grayed out" anf found this page and if you scroll all the way down you'll find this KB article, which though not entirely related, does solve the problem. Essentially you open the system.ini file and under the [bOOT] section, add "drivers=mmsystem.dll" without the "'s, then reboot the system and it works....

Microsoft changed the OEM rule, you can buy it without hardware now... If you're building a computer it's understood that you're the system builder and as such are authorized to buy just the OS... Also, if there is a 64-bit driverpack, I doubt Bashrat would maintain it, he's got enough on his plate as it is...

Not initiating the shutdown count down...
Nakatomi2010 replied to Nakatomi2010's topic in Windows Post-Install Wizard (WPI)
I know that, but it doesn't get triggered... At the end of the WPI.cmd script it just sits there... XPize doesn't even install properly.... -
I've been using WPI and at some point during my last remastering of my AIO-DVD, WPI stopped working entirely right... i can't remember when it was so I'm sorry... Currently the things WPI insalls are .NET Framework 2.0, Java, Power DVD, Nero, Ad-Aware, Open Office 2.0, AVG 7, XPize, Microsoft Antipsy, Picasa, Google Earth, Google Toolbar, and a couple other things... Basically what hapens is that at the end of the install XPize doesn't appear to install properly, the MCE theme is not installed, and WPI does not make the call for the 2 minute reboot window I told it to.... So, I'm pretty sure it's not WPI because i've removed it from the install and something is still not letting that 2 minute countdown appear... Thoughts?

I just open up the EULA.txt file and scroll waaaaay down to the bottom and grab the version from there, it'll either say OEM, VLM, or RTL depending on what version... It's been about 98% accurate for me...

I read somewhere, forgot where, that they ARE keeping ALL Vista versions on single DVD, because they're having problems coping with all the different master images of XP, they want to fix that by just maintaining the one image... But as you said, probably a 64, and a 32 bit image, not both...

I do not know your English, I did not learn from Dr. Seuss, Help I wish I could provide, But language is our divide, So put down that Dr. Suess, And maybe this we can finish.

I know XP x64 Edition was more geered towards getting people to want to start creating 64-bit software, and I was wondering if Vista is probably going to be the pusher of 64-bit software... And what I mean by this is that since each Vista DVD is going to be the full blown operating system (Full featured, CD Keys activate different components), that 64-bit Vista will be included when a customer buys a copy... What this allows Microsoft to do is support old 32-bit people who upgrade just the OS, while all the newer computers built once Vista is released will probably have 64-bit vista pre-loaded on them... Is this going to probably be how its done, or will there still be a split market? I mean we're all going 64-bit, we might as well force it down people's throats at some point, whether they like it or not, and the launch of a new standard operating system seems like as good a time as any... Thoughts?

I'm aware of what's involved, it's one of the reasons I'm trying to fix it without the update, but you pointed out that the shipset drivers were updated, as well as the video card drivers, perhaps it would be in my best interest to rebuild the DVD, it's just gonna suck since it takes a day to update all 9 copies of XP, and burn to DVD.... Bright side is that I can generally have it done within the first try... Was wondering if this is an isolated issue, or not...

Hey, as you can see in my sig I use a Bashratified XP DVD, and whenever I use it on machines with a Biostar board, it seems to just blue screen when it hits the GUI stage. If I use the drivers from the CD it works fine... Thoughts? (It's happened on a K8M800 and an M7VIZ so far, both VIA chipsets) The drivers ARE on the DVD in your pack, but for some reason they cause BSODs....

How does one add just the recovery console to be bootable? I don't really want to have to load an XP install just to get at the recovery console, so how do I make it an option right from the CD? I'm using CD Shell....
