    Windows XP Boot

Tried the manufacturers system utility... Drive is completely functional Didn't quite understand what you're suggesting... I don't want to updgrade to an NT based OS (I've already got Windows XP installed, which i'm trying to boot)... What are the exact commands for doing this? I was messing around but found nothing in help to create boot.ini entry for my installation of Windows XP. Thanks for the help guys

    Windows XP Boot

thanks but a reinstallation isn't really what I'm looking for...
  3. hello! I've been trying to fix this PC for a week now and any help would be appreciated. Basically, I switched on the PC and I got the 'NTLDR is missing' error message. I put my XP CD, went to repair and copied those two files (ntldr.com etc... I don't remember the exact filenames) to the C: directory. Rebooted and the NTLDR message didn't appear, but the computer will just restart when it tries to boot from this partition (no windows loading screen even, just a black screen for a split second followed by a restart) Then I tried fixboot and fixmbr but I still have the same problem. I then did a virus scan in miniPE and it found 223 infected files but i had them all removed and the computer still won't boot into XP... still the same error. I don't recall any system files being removed during the virus scan because they were infected by a virus What should I do? (I really don't want to have to reinstall a fresh version of windows...) Thanks again
  4. I would like to stay in touch and always have the latest Windows XP SP2 Updates/Hotfixes but I don't like using Microsoft Automatic Updates or the Windows Update site. Are there any sites out there where I can keep in track with the latest releases and download the update files to keep in my HD (just to save some bandwidth when I install in other PCs). THanks
  5. I just bought a Hitachi 250GB 8MB Buffer SATA drive and I wanted to set up a RAID 0 config on my PC. I know that they have to be the same size but to they have to be the same model/manufacturer? E.g. can i configure with a Seagate 250GB?
  6. Spent hours trying to research on how to do this but ended up just reinstalling windows... sorry
  7. "FSAuto" is the perfect program for what you are trying to do. Search for it on www.softpedia.com. You can configure the program to certain services when you run a program and then restart them once the program closes... very useful for games goold luck
  8. hello. I configured my own windows installation with nLite and now I have a problem with windows media technologies. When I try to install Windows Media Player 10 I get an error message saying that "the version of windows media technologies is uncompatible with my version of windows". Also, I can not playback .wma files. I installed the Windows Media Audio 9.1 redistributable and I can now listen to .wma's on winamp. However, I was still unable to install WMP and some programs that are dependant on WMA still won't run. Did I remove something I shouldn't have in nLite and is there anyway of restoring it without a Windows Reinstallation? Thanks
  9. thanks for the help! So I put the HD in the freezer for a couple of hours, took it out and plugged it back in... same problem. I managed to run the utility from IBM/Hitachi (make of my HD) and it was unable to repair and told me I had a defective drive... I would still like to retrieve the data. Using a DOS filemanager from 'Ultimate BootCD', I actually managed to browse the files within the HD for the first time but when I tried to copy any files it would freeze up. What could I use to retrieve the data? I could try Norton Ghost but I only have like 150GB of free space... can i create an image of only part of the HD? I've already set the disk to slave and tried booting Windows from another drive but it won't recognize this defective HD. I'll also try BartPE as people have justed. Thanks for the help people.
  10. Hello! I remember reading up a long time ago on techniques to recover data from hard drives that were malfunctioning. I have a 250GB IDE HD. It's detected during the BIOS boot but in windows it won't appear. I tried booting up with miniPE and Hiren's BootCD and using filemanagers but they all either 'freeze' when i select the 250GB HD and I basically can't access these very important files. In miniPE, I even tried running OnTrack Recovery HD Diagnostic tool but it also freezes when I scan this HD. I've heard some bizarre techniques of people like leaving their HDs sealed and protected in the fridge, and then they could get the drive working for a couple of mins to back up data... any suggestions or comments on what I should do? is that technique possible or just BS? thanks
  11. can I run a repair with and non-SP2 disk? How?
  12. Hello! I recently installed Style XP and another pack (Universal Pack) that changes the appearance of XP (I think it contained that ObjectDock that makes your desktop different, like a Macintosh). I then uninstalled them both and windows boots very strangely. When it boots, the computer loads up completely well but the desktop is completely missing. All I can see a blue background and the mouse (which moves fine). I can second click the mouse and click on properties but nothing appears. I can even open winamp through a shortcut key and listen to music but I still can't see anything on the screen. Funnily enough, when I shut down, the desktop appears for a couple of second before windows switches off. Now i've tried booting in safe mode and using 'the last recent configuration that worked' but both give me the same problem. I've lost my XP CD so i can not 'repair'. What should I do? (I know i'll never play around with themes again) Thanks
  13. hello! Is it possible to place the Recycle Bin Icon at the system tray (I would really like to have a completely clean desktop yet still maintain a quick functionality for the recycle bin). Thanks in advance
  14. Hello! I recently set-up a HTPC for the living room to play back my video collection (most of these are in DivX / xVid format). Now the collection is in a second PC connected to a Wireless Acess Point. When I playback these videos I get an occasional (but VERY frustrating) skip. What appears to happen is that the video freezes for a split second and then jumps to the next keyframe and freezes again until audio catches up.... what the problem is exactly doesn't really matter... I just wanted to know if there are programs that could buffer more of the video file to avoid this problem. I have Wireless G so bandwidth shouldn't really be an issue as i can copy a 120min movie in 15mins. Thanks for the help
  15. I had a similar problem. It only fixed itself when I change the master hard drive...
  16. could be some configured key your hitting that minimizes the game. Try running the game but not move the mouse or keyboard to see if it still minimizes. Other than that upgrade your GPU drivers.
  17. Are many people upgrading? I'm no expert, but are most applications 32-bit? Just upgrading to windows 64bit won't make much of a difference then, will it?
  18. sorry about the double post... anyways, it's a Shuttle XPC SN25P and the bundled software for audio was from VIA. I'm sure it's the NFORCE 4 chipset and when i go to device manager I see "Envy24 Family Audio for Shuttle Only". Since it's a barebone system, I guess that's what's wrong
  19. Hello! I purchased the Shuttle XPC SN25P and it works great. I installed the bundled software for the audio, that comes with VIA's Audio Control Center. In this configuration utility, I can not enable the option 'use spdif' because they say i have not enabled digital output. Been looking like crazy on how to enable digital output (almost sure it's not in the little utility)... anyone know of a solution? The Shuttle XPC SN25P is a NFORCE 4 chipset, so i guess the solution will be the same for other users that have the AMD NFORCE 4. Thanks for the help

  21. under the config of my linksys router (192.168.1.1), there's no option that actually tells me the MAC address. There is an option to clone the MAC address from my network card, but I don't want to do that
  22. hello! I remember changing the name of the actual Administrator account (not just creating another with a new name) with a tweaking program (Tweax XP/Tweak UI/ don't remember which 1)!!!! Anyone know and can tell me?=
  23. Hello! I'm trying to configure a linksys wireless repeater. I have to input my AP's WLAN MAC address. I found it using a little app but it doesn't work... what's the conventional way of finding MAC addresses?
  24. sorry for being unclear. I want to be able to access my files on PC 1 from a remote PC on my network without having to create user/pass in that second PC... basically, just like to "log-in" to my PC1 as one of the users of PC1. Understand?? kinda?
  25. but is it possible to add a remote user (a user that exists in another PC), so that they can access the files here without me creating an identical user account?
