  1. Yes, the laptop was somehow configured so that it ALWAYS asks for user/password when it attempts to access another machine on the network. I want to do the same for the other machines but I don't know how.
  2. But what I want to know is how to configure other machines so that they always ask for user/pass
  3. Hi! I have a simple network set up with a linksys WRT54G. I have some shares on one of my PCs and I have disabled simple Filesharing. My brother's laptop from his company was specially configured so that everytime he tries to access my PC using "\\PCNAME" he gets a windows popping up prompting for a user name and password. Furthermore, he can log-in as a user that was created on my computer (i.e. he doesn't have to create a user with the same name/pass on his PC to access mine) I was wondering how they configured that. Any ideas? Thanks a lot. Any help is appreciated.
  4. Fixed it today... since I had the Promise Controller on IDE mode I had to load those drivers and not RAID drivers... :s
  5. Hello. I've been having this problem which I just can not fix. I have an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe which comes with a Promise FastTrak SATA RAID controller. It used to work but for some reason, since I've reinstalled XP it hasn't been working. I've tried using the drivers from the original CD, but I keep getting the following error message: I've been to the ASUS web-site and I've tried all the Drivers available online. However, I keep getting the same error message. What could be wrong? During the BIOS boot, the controller initializes successfully and recognizes the drives, but I can not get it working under windows... The windows XP i'm running was customized with nLite and I think I *may* have removed the SATA/RAID drivers... could this be the reason, even though I'm installing the drivers now? Thanks for any help
  6. hmmm... I downloaded the Promise RAID drivers from ASUS website and integrated them into my nLite XP installation... however i still get the same error. If i press F6 during installation it asks for a diskette, but i don't have a floppy drive on my PC. I'm started to think that the problem is not to do with driver... what else could it be? Thanks.
  7. can i integrate SATA drivers into a nLite installation?
  8. It's a custom (nLite) Windows XP SP2 Pro installation. I am booting from the CD. The Hard Drive i'm trying to install the OS in is a Maxtor 250GB SATA drive, connected to the Promise RAID controller on my motherboard (ASUS P4c800-E Deluxe). Could it be drivers?
  9. I've been installing fresh installations of windows for ages and I got this error for the first time. I have a HD with two partitions. Windows was installed on the primary partition and I went to reinstall windows. Under windows, I deleted the old partition and told windows to install on the new unpartitioned space. However, i get an error saying: To install windows on the partition you selected, Setup must write some startup files to the disk. However, this disk does not contain a Windows XP-compatible partition. It then suggested me to delete a partition and create a new one. I did this, but I still get the same error. What should I do? Any help appreciated. Thanks. Title Edited - Please follow new posting rules from now on. --Zxian
  10. I'm guessing they don't because i accessed them from my friend's PC... are there any windows services that are required for me to view all computers in my workplace?
  11. typing net view shows me exactly the smaller list of computers that appear on the workgroup from my machine...
  12. Hi guys. I'm connected to the university network and all the computers here are set up under the workgroup called 'Resnet'. From my friend's machine, if I go to see workgroup computers, I get a list of loads computers connected to the network. However, when I do the same on my machine, I get an error message. After doing some research, I found that enabling the IPX/NetBIOS protocols would help. It did, but I still can't see ALL the machines, just a few of them. However, I'm still unable to connect to my friend's computer (using \\I.P. nº). I tried the ping command on cmd but it gave me nothing, all packets lost. I'm running Windows XP SP2. I have disabled the Windows Firewall and Kaspersky service but it didn't help at all. TCP/IP is set using DHCP and I'm able to browse the internet and connect to a few computers. Are there any solutions for this? Thanks Just tried to ping command on my friend's machine again, and it worked I also managed to connect to his machine However, I still can not see all the machines under my workgroup....
  13. Hello! I was tweaking my windows cause I have a very week machine. I basically disabled many services that weren't useful. Since I've done that, the Windows Installer Service does not start up by itself (it's set to manual). Basically, I have to manually start it everytime I want to install something. Now, i suppose that manual start-up type allows windows to automatically load up a service when it needs it, or am I mistaken? I just want to know if there was another service I may have disabled which is preventing the windows install service from loading up automatically on itself, when I try to install something. Thanks
  14. Hello! I'm at Uni now, and filesharing through to the internet is impossible from residential areas. I would like to set up a LAN filesharing system such as DCplusplus for ppl to share files among themselves. I searched for DCplusplus Server but I found no software. What program should I use to set up a DirectConnect server, and is it tricky to set up? Thanks
  15. already got it off of fdv's link to the nLite forum. Thanks.
  16. alright, I guess I'll just do that... lol. Thanks anyways
  17. I just worked so much on getting everything up and running in this new windows installation that I honestly do not feel like making another build in nLite and reinstalling windows. don't mean to pressure but this is quite urgent...
  18. Hello! I removed Outlook Express from my windows installation thinking i would use Office Outlook 2003 instead. However, Office 2003 isn't working as it should and I just read that it requires Outlook Express to run... is this true? if so, how do i reinstall it or is there another way around to make Office Outlook work? Thanks btw, I've tried placing a normal (non n-lite) SP2 XP CD and going to install components but Outlook Express doesn't appear on the list...

    Windows XP Boot

hmm... didn't see any option to perform a repair install. How do I do that?
  22. I'm not really sure how to fix this, but I've had similar problems when I upgraded my Windows Installer through Windows Update... I remember searching and finding a solution at the microsoft's support site. Also, are you using nLite or a modified installation of Windows?
  23. Hello! I had some pictures in a folder which wanted to keep private. To prevent other people from accessing them i disabled "Use simple file-sharing" and under the Security tab I added two user names: 'Everyone' and 'Gui' (the account only I have access to). To 'Everyone', I set it to Deny everything (read, modify etc) and to 'Gui' I set it to full control. This worked great for ages. I now reinstalled windows and created a user called 'Gui' (same password as well) and Windows still allows me to open this protected folder with pictures. However, I am unable to open any of these files. They have no thumbnails, and the files will not open with any program (paint, photoshop, windows picture viewer etc.). I noticed that the folder was set to 'read only' and when I try to set it to normal I get an error saying access denied to all the picture files. Any thoughts on how to recover these pictures?

    Windows XP Boot

Alright so i've decided to fix this a little differently as I couldn't create the entry in boot.ini... I created a new logical partition in the same HD (after the original installation partition) and installed windows XP again. I can now access my boot.ini file and it reads: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect How should I edit this so I can boot from the original installation of windows, on the first partition (primary partition)
