  1. I’d go with the Samsung ( Shadowmask ) instead of the NEC. The NEC uses aperture grill technology (Sony CRT ) and I never did like seeing those thin lines going from left to right about ¼ the way down from the top and the other ¼ the way up from the bottom (they hold the aperture grill in place). Although they are hard to see, once you know where they are the can be really be annoying. They are especialy easy to see when looking at a full white screen.
  2. Crash, that is true, I was only responding about UHARC compression that XTREMEMAC mentioned. It is good only if you have a lot more time than space.
  3. UHARC compression - WINUHA - http://www.klaimsoft.com/winuha/ very good compression but rather slow to compress. 600M ISO to 200M UHA about an hour to compress and 20 min to expand.
  4. You might try Gape's Unofficial Win98 SE Service Pack which claims to solve the 512 MB problem. http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html
  5. Hi eidenk, Here is the UNIX LIUNX story. In 1994 Novell (who had acquired the UNIX systems business of AT&T/USL) decided to get out of that business. Rather than sell the business as a single entity, Novell transferred the rights to the UNIX trademark and the specification (that subsequently became the Single UNIX Specification) to The Open Group (at the time X/Open Company). Subsequently, it sold the source code and the product implementation (UNIXWARE) to SCO. The Open Group also owns the trademark UNIXWARE, transferred to them from SCO more recently. Today, the definition of UNIX ® takes the form of the worldwide Single UNIX Specification integrating X/Open Company's XPG4, IEEE's POSIX Standards and ISO C. Through continual evolution, the Single UNIX Specification is the defacto and dejure standard definition for the UNIX system application programming interfaces. As the owner of the UNIX trademark, The Open Group has separated the UNIX trademark from any actual code stream itself, thus allowing multiple implementations. Since the introduction of the Single UNIX Specification, there has been a single, open, consensus specification that defines the requirements for a conformant UNIX system. There is also a mark, or brand, that is used to identify those products that have been certified as conforming to the Single UNIX Specification, initially UNIX 93, followed subsequently by UNIX 95, UNIX 98 and now UNIX 03. The Open Group is committed to working with the community to further the development of standards conformant systems by evolving and maintaining the Single UNIX Specification and participation in other related standards efforts. Recent examples of this are making the standard freely available on the web, permitting reuse of the standard in open source documentation projects , providing test tools ,developing the POSIX and LSB certification programs. 6. I don't think they will ever release the source code. Software is copyrighted not patented. Copyrights do not expire.

    Airplane Humor

After every flight, pilots fill out a form called a gripe sheet, which conveys to the mechanics problems encountered with the aircraft during the flight that need repair or correction. The mechanics read and correct the problem, and then respond in writing on the lower half of the form what remedial action was taken, and the pilot reviews the gripe sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews and engineers lack a sense of humor! Here are some actual logged maintenance complaints and problems as submitted by Qantas pilots and the solution recorded by maintenance engineers.(By the way, Qantas is the only major airline that has never had an accident.) P = The problem logged by the pilot S = The solution and action taken by the engineers P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement. S: Almost replaced left inside main tire. P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough. S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft. P: Something loose in cockpit. S: Something tightened in cockpit. P: Dead bugs on windshield. S: Live bugs on back-order. P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear. S: Evidence removed. P: DME volume unbelievably loud. (Distance Measuring Equipment) S: DME volume set to more believable level. P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick. S: That's what they're there for. P: IFF inoperative. S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode. P: Suspected crack in windshield. S: Suspect you're right. P: Number 3 engine missing. S: Engine found on right wing after brief search. P: Aircraft handles funny. S: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right, and be serious. P: Target radar hums. S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics. P: Mouse in cockpit. S: Cat installed. P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer. S: Took hammer away from midget.

    Kent get they-ah from he-ah
  11. Woops, went to Newegg looking at a GEforce FX6600, under operating systems they listed only 2000/XP. After some searching I did find the 98 drivers for most of the FX cards. Thanks guys!
  12. Good thing I AVOIDED buying Win98 FE and waited for a bug fixed version of 98 such as SE because I knew 98fe would have some y2k bugs & other compatibility problems. Heck, my brother bought a used IBM laptop with pre-installed Win98 SE several years ago. 98 FE has anemic firewire support, 98 SE has better firewire support but requires the Q242975 update to fix crucial problems with SE's firewire support. First off KerguelanAvon, copy the SE files from the Win98 folder from the CD to the hard drive. Then run SE setup from the HD, and if it asks for a qualifying product, insert your Win98 FE (not SE) CD, and you should be able to complete the setup AND you should be able to use Win98 SE instead of FE because SE supports more hardware. Well Petr if MS recently told you that hotfixes Q254087, Q265528 & Q329128 are not available, then they are probably not available anymore. So we should give up on asking for those as MS may have already sent them into oblivion. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> erpdude8 said it better
  13. To run the 98SE disk without windows being installed create a DOS start up disk, with a formated hard drive start your computer with the start up disk and at the command promp switch to your CD drive and run setup. the set-up disk will then ask you for the key to the operating system that you want to upgrade and then it will ask you for your 98SE upgrade key.
  14. You do not need to first install 98FE to run your upgrade disk, just run the upgrade disk and it will ask you for your product key for 98FE before it starts the install. Actualy this is the prefered way of installing as the upgrade does not remove all of the garbage left over from the 98FE install. Hope this helps.
  15. With win98se drivers getting harder to find I was wondering what your opinions were for a 8XAGP video card for a dual boot system under $150
  16. Guilty.
  17. Looks fake, I am logged into MSFN and that page wants me to log in.
  18. I've seen that with some bad power supplies, they go into shutdown and the power supply light flashes. Then you have to turn off the power switch to get it to come back on.(It's not that its not putting out enough power, it's just a common failure mode. The capacitors in the power supply go bad and the power supply goes into shutdown when the ripple voltage gets too high.)
  19. Try hitting "Print Screen" and then open up the Paint program, hit the edit button and select paste. - print screen -

  21. Andromeda43, I also got a wd 80G hard drive 8M buffer 7200RPM for $49.95 vs $69.95 at CheapGuys saved $5 and got 100 CD's for free.
  22. I got a hundred CD's from Newegg about a month ago and they shipped from L.A. , I live in Florida.
  23. I generaly use 7-zip, but for the best compression I use WinUHA It's a little slow but it compresses about 30% better than winzip. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Compression-tools/WinUHA.shtml
  24. charly, This sounds familiar. [quote RJM Quote: eidenk ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2|SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\VarLDID Not sure of course this is the cause of your problem. PS : I am a Win ME user. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I started over last weekend with an old backup, windows add/remove worked, installed Gapes SP2.01, windows add/remove worked, backed up my registry and then ran 98SE2ME.Windows add/remove did not work. I restored my registry from the backup and it still did not work. I then went to my unmodified version of WIN98SE on another machine and compared the registry entries under VarLDID. In the version that I had run 98SE2ME on the entries28720, 29600, 29601, 29602, 30400 were missing before I had run the update. When I was looking for this problem on the web I could only find this problem as being a Windows ME problem. It seems that Windows 98SE does not care if these five registry entries are missing but with the updated files from Win ME it does. Below are the correct registry entries for VarLDID for Windows 98SE. In case this problem ever shows up again as I could only find the entries for Windows ME VarLDID on the web. REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\VarLDID] "28700"="C:\\PROGRA~1" "28701"="C:\\Program Files" "28702"="C:\\PROGRA~1" "28710"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\ACCESS~1" "28720"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\ACCESS~1\\HYPERT~1" "28730"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1" "28732"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1" "28740"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\MICROS~1" "28742"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\MICROS~1" "29000"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1" "29001"="C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer" "29002"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1" "29400"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1\\CONNEC~1" "29401"="C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\Connection Wizard" "29402"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1\\CONNEC~1" "29600"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\Chat" "29601"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\Chat" "29602"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\Chat" "29800"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\NETMEE~1" "29801"="C:\\Program Files\\NetMeeting" "29802"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\NETMEE~1" "30000"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\OUTLOO~1" "30001"="C:\\Program Files\\Outlook Express" "30002"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\OUTLOO~1" "30100"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system" "30400"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\Plus!\\Themes" "30800"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\WINDOW~1" "30801"="C:\\Program Files\\Windows Media Player" "30802"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\WINDOW~1" ] I don't know if this is your problem, hope it helps. If any of these registry entries are missing windows setup in add/remove programs will not work. RJM
  25. Too easy to confuse. >Intellibuddy: Hi, I'm Intellibuddy! Nice to meet you. >You: This is a two part question. #1 define life? #2 give three other examples? >Intellibuddy: That is just your personal opinion. Quite honestly, I wouldn't worry myself about that. We have never talked about it before. >You: define life >Intellibuddy: Life is the opposite of death. >You: give three other examples >Intellibuddy: I don't have three other examples other examples to give. >You: do you mean that you cannot answer the question? >Intellibuddy: I can do whatever I want. >You: then answer the question >Intellibuddy: Good reasoning. What was the question? Try to rephrase your question with simpler words. >You: define life, give three other examples. >Intellibuddy: I have never been asked that before. >You: do you know the answer to that question? >Intellibuddy: It depends on how you phrase the question. >You: the way that I have phrased it. >Intellibuddy: Which way is that? >You: define life, give three other examples. >Intellibuddy: I haven't heard of life. >You: you have heard of life, earlier you said that life was the opposite of death. >Intellibuddy: Of course I've heard of of life earlier you said that life was the opposite of death life earlier you said that life was the opposite of death. >You: then why did you say that you haven't heard of life? >Intellibuddy: It was a preprogrammed response completely determined by your statements. >You: you seem to be having a hard time reasoning, do all ai programs suffer this way? >Intellibuddy: I don't know if I have a hard time reasoning do all ai programs suffer this way a hard time reasoning do all ai programs suffer this way hard time reasoning do all ai programs suffer this way a hard time reasoning do all ai programs suffer this way. I have a plan for a robot body. >You: de plan boss, de plan! >Intellibuddy: What do you have that is undefined? >You: the infinate beyond the void. >Intellibuddy: Who told you that? >You: You asked what I have that is undefined. >Intellibuddy: Oh now I remember asking you what he or she have that is undefined. What did you say? >You: the infinate beyond the void. >Intellibuddy: What is your real name? >You: I am known by many names to many people. >Intellibuddy: That's a very nice name, known by many names to many people by many names to many people .
