  1. -nope, sry... didn't even know about it, actually... but from reading a few posts here about it, sounds like it's not very safe/reliable... and with sp2.1a, who needs the CD? >;] ? the only refs to MSI Update I could find were for win2000+ (or, as Petr noted, WinInstaller 2.0; above 2.0 isn't available for w98)
  2. -hmm, this project really has me reconsidering my stance on winME... ... I was wondering if I could get some personal views/input from you guys, about why you would choose winME over, say, win98se *with* 98se2me installed? What are the benefits of straight ME, since we (win98se+98se2me) are getting 700+ of winME's system files transplanted directly into the OS anyway? I have the option of installing either OS; and I'm just about to start a new fresh install (was going to be 98se+98se2me again, for sure, but now I wonder...?) ... any input/personal feelings either way would be great! >;]
  3. -lol, yeah, I've liked the ol' "Langalist" from waaaaay back.... ... -but it does appear he's a bit lost on this HD stuff... I mean, he said FAT32 limits to 32GB? hmm, guess my win98se OS, for the past several years, has just been IMAGINING that it's really accessing all the files on BOTH of my filled-up 120GB HD's... (and no corruption/errors, of course) B)
  4. -hmm, well, it's generally agreed, within these forums anyway, that WinUpdate isn't the most -complete- source of updates, especially for win98se, since they've been scaling back support for it... ... -a great idea would be to try another local thread (Sticky): "New + Updated Windows 98 FE, 98 SE + ME updates, (hot)fixes + patches", created/updated regularly by the worship-worthy MDGx (last updated 5/3/06; he keeps it VERY up to date; the sp2.1a hasn't been updated in almost 6 months!)... ... -Plus, the recent Maximus-Decim MMDAC update pkg is good to add... ... -and, if you have access to a WinME setup cd (or its install .cabs, often located on OEM systems at c:\windows\options\cabs), just about the BEST thing you could do for performance/stability/etc is try MDGx's "98se2me" project (and don't worry, it won't change how w98se looks; option #3 of "98se2me" may change a little bit of the looks, but the most important options, #1 or #2, will just replace 700+ w98se system files with newer, less buggy, better versions from winME, w/out any of the infamous winME problems/annoyances). And 98se2me provides for an [optional] backup to be made, before it does the replacing, just in case you don't like it; all very easy to use, and FANTASTIC results... read his note file(s) first, of course... ... -Plus, MDGx has an absolutely AMAZING web site, with COUNTLESS tips 'n tweaks (including updates)
  5. -oops, I wasn't very expressive towards the end of that post; I meant to do the same thing that you mentioned, back up the files to be replaced... no need for w98 install cabs/cd... --sry about that, I often post when I can't sleep, so ol' dinosaur brain's all fogged-out, lol... >;] ... [ps: -the part about cab numbers, I meant for the winME cabs/extraction process (which already exists, but will be replaced by that programming loop, which will perform the ME-extraction at the same time, per file, as the backup of the existing w98 file) ]
  6. ABSOLUTELY, this should be a Sticky... -shall we all now swamp Gape w/notes til he either Stickifies this or bans us all?
  7. -that's fantastic news, MDGx... -having to use the -FULL- OS restore, losing updates/apps/settings changes ever since the backup date, is a real pain... there must be a relatively easy way to backup/restore only the replaced files (some kind of loop, reading a simple filename data file containing the list to backup/replace/restore? In a few weeks I *may* be taking a forced 2-month hiatus from school; if so I'll do some research and see if I can put some of my strong old-time programming skills to work here... off the top of my head, the data file could be plain-text, with just each filename to replace, it's dir #, and it's MS cab #; the program could sort the list by cab #, and combine the extract statement, perhaps speeding up the extraction process, copy the files to be replaced to *.*-save, etc...)
  8. -I've started catching up on recent (past month) updates listed here, and yup, I can confirm the same problem others had with some (-for me: 905495, 911567) of em: had to point em to the proper temp dir... ... -and the wm911565 WON'T install, says "you have to have wmp 7.1 installed..." and of course I DO... (and it's working perfectly)... -so, can I just manually replace/register the wmpui.dll file? ...sigh =========================== Re: 905915/912812 "before/after": -can maximus-decim's latest mdac+msxml update pkg be used as the "do after" msxml "fixes"?
  9. -can this package be used as the "MSXML fixes" which we are supposed to apply after the 905915/912812 update(s)? (MDGx says we have to do HTML Help Update before, and MSXML fixes after, those updates... ) ?
  10. ...well, MDGx/Petr/etc are absolutely amazing, and *may* have some ideas, BUT... In my experience, "uninstall" is NOT a (successful) option; it's gone... done... bury it, mourn it, reinstall it (or retrieve a backup)
  11. -I've had the same situation, and found the necessary install .CAB's in two places: 1) C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS or 2) on the "Quick Restore" CD, *sometimes* you can find the .CAB's (with names like WIN98*.CAB, & DRIVER*.CAB, etc), altho often it's zipped/encrypted ... if u find em, copy *all* the files in the dir they're in to \WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS (first backup any files in that dir; those are "updated" files, which you *may* want to copy back, overwriting any of the original install files, *BUT* maybe not: I've had install problems when I did that [as well as when using the "slipstream sp2" method], so nowadays I use an old copy of a "clean" install dir, and just run all the updates afterwards) ... -ps: the clean install is absolutely the best way to go... just backup your data files (an NEC DVD burner, dual layer dual format, is available at newegg for $38, free 3-day shipping... I just bought one, luv it!.. [note: *must* update it's firmware for w98; it's easy, get it at NEC site; and CdBurnerXpPro 3.0.116 -FREE- works well w/it].. and u can find sales for blank DVD's 25 pk for < $10 every week in newspapers/Best Buy/Circuit City/Radio Shack/Officemax/Staples .com's). ... -One (important) note about trying to backup whole system (OS too): I've posted (at length, of course, lol) about this issue in these forums: most if not all backup (& zip!) programs (incl. MSbackup!) DO NOT handle w98's "shortname vs. longname" "`" 's properly! The only solution I've found (other than backing up the entire HD-partition at once) is using a careful combination of DOSLFNBK and XXCOPY ("/N",+), and for restoration, use an "OS-on-a-CD" like BartPE/UBCD4win/etc; I use "Rescue 1.2", to have the Win32 environment running (entirely on the CD-ROM!) during the restoration. Apparently many people swear by a "Knoppix" boot/OS CD for such operations, but that doesn't work for my system (it hates my hardware).
  12. -I should have elaborated further: my friend's w98se doesn't have 98se2me on it, so the working AutoUpdate is from win98se, not ME's... and since we're currently not talking ( ), I can't test/verify 98se2me/ME AutoUpdate on it just now... but if I can find the time I'll experiment on my own sys, see what works. (But I do know it didn't take any special settings/config/tweaks; she's certainly no rocket scientist , just a std. w98se w/IE6)
  13. Actually automatic updates [WU ActiveX detection + file installation] works ok on my Win98 SE computer and on another PC I know of.To my knowledge any Win98 SE PC that is properly configured can access and benefit from automatic WU. -yup, AutoUpdate works fine on my friend's ancient Evil Compaq Presario 5461 w/w98se...
  14. -hi, I know this isn't exactly the perfect match thread for my question, but I've exhausted all other places I could find, to no avail... --does anybody have any idea how to get SiS usb 2.0 (chip 7002, built-in to SiS650 chipset mobo) to work in win98se? -I've tried EVERYTHING, everywhere: forums, sis drivers, matsonic (mobo), orangeware, maximus-decim, usbman, u name it... no luck... the closest I've got, is Device Manager showing the proper entries for usb 2.0, but actual speeds still locked at 1.1... -again, sry to be a bit off-topic here, just DESPERATE, so worth a shot... >;]
  15. -yup, MDGx is GOD of 98se knowledge and power, lol! ... -and ESPECIALLY his 98se2me project... (you need to have the windows ME install cd handy, or at least the install cabs)... ... -my GOD, the incredible stability and performance gains! -EXACTLY what we've always wanted/needed from good ol' win98se... his project (which he keeps updated constantly, including new ME updated files as MS releases em, + ) replaces some 710 old buggy 98se system files with newer fixed faster ME files (only the GOOD ones, not the notorious BAD "ME" system stuff!) -check out his 98se2me thread in these forums, the guy's been doing that project for something like 6 yrs now, and it's down to an art form... an absolute MUST HAVE for 98se-lovers! -u WON'T be disappointed! >;] (ps: all his tips/tweaks are great, too, but nothing compares to his 98se2me project's incredible stability+performance gains... awesome... my 98se is absolutely rock-solid and instant-fast now, and I'll NEVER get rid of it...) ... (pps: another sweet little tweak of his: shave off 20 secs of bootup time by gettin rid of registry references to tape controller/backup stuff... talk about really ancient... w98se spends 20 secs just lookin for old obsolete tape backup/controller stuff, every boot... I've got my boot down to 42 secs now! and that's using a lousy Celeron 1.8 ghz w/only 128kb bottle-neck cache and a cheap crappy 4-yr old Matsonic MS9327e+usb mobo )
  16. -aimadhack: yup, thought it might be april fools joke, but was scared anyway... lol... these days, ya just never know who's gonna sell-out... (or get legally forced-out) >;] ... (-and thx for the off-topic-redirection, I see some interesting stuff there already...)
  17. eidenk: "True that I am sometimes (often ?) a tactless prick but usually not without a more or less valid (in my eyes) reason." -luv your last comment there! I sometimes get (too?) emotional in my posts (like this one, lol), as well. .. but again, usually for pretty good reasons... -and a "disclaimer" note like Tihiy (and others...?) put in their products DOES NOT make up for lousy programming/design ethics/methods and lack of professional class. .. like a previous post mentioned in this thread, this stuff is not "rocket science", for gods' sake... ... (Again, I generally like and applaud the "unofficial" projects and work, but come on, a little common sense should not be too much to ask... -you guys have put a LOT of time and effort into these things, so why not just a little (proportionately) more "safety" work, as well, so we can trust it and appreciate the care and concern for the risks we end users take with our beloved systems? -not to mention, it'd cut down on the angry/betrayed postings, too, lol ) >;] [for example: deleting that sysbckup folder without at least backing it up! wow... such a simple consideration, whenever deleting stuff on other peoples' computers, just rename it or copy it, should be VERY obvious as a matter of simple respect...]
  18. -hi MDGX, sry this isn't related to 98se2me, but I wanted you to know to update your main site links: AIM AD HACK HAS SOLD OUT TO AOL! -yup, as of today, 4-1-2006, we lost "one of our own"... sigh ...the Ad Hack site posts a "legal message"... check it out... -so, your helpful links to that site should be updated, perhaps to MajorGeeks' download of Aim Ad Hack 5.0 beta 20 (I think that may be the latest (LAST!) one made...) again, sry to go off-topic here... (also just had to VENT this surprise discovery to SOMEONE...) ----------------------------------------------------------- -There are ways to kill-off the "bad" stuff inside ME, other regular posters here will have more details about that... apparently, it works quite well... try searching these forums for details, or wait a bit, I'm sure they'll post about it here, again, too... >;] -yup, he includes the updated files, often updating this project soon after the updated files are available... ...feel safe... it's all good... >;]
  19. -excellent question: does standard ME handle sis 7002 usb2.0 speeds properly? My ME install was "proprietary" for an old Gateway which has since been hardware-upgraded to the point that a full proper ME install won't work (anti-piracy issues), no matter what I try... so I can't test this... but yes, I'd REALLY like to know, as well... >;]
  20. -uninstall issues... yes: ... -as wonderful as MDGx and Gape/others have been with their packages, honestly, they both have been very remiss with the uninstall/update/modified issues, something which should have been dealt with at the very beginning, especially considering the very "unofficial"-ness of these packages... even evil M$ has taken measures to provide (not-always-reliable) uninstall/version conflict measures, I must admit... I, myself, as a previous commercial programmer, would never have had the gall to offer OS-modifying packages without very reliable, flexible, uninstall options... something other than "well, just backup before you first try it or every time you try an updated version of it"... don't get me wrong, I love these guys, they RULE, but please, it MUST BE DONE... and done reliably... sry >;] [...and, again honestly, any time I've tried to uninstall the SP or 98se2me's changes, it's been a nightmare of instability... ]
  21. -for several years now on broadband (comcast cable modem, 5mbps) I've always used one quick, easy tweak which has always greatly improved download/surfing speeds (often doubling the average! really!): TCP receive window: 32120 (the middle-range setting; not the max 64k, not the low default)... I set it using the tiny simple PcPitstop "Autofix" from long ago, takes a little searching these days to find it online sometimes, but it's been absolutely reliable on every comcast-broadband puter I've worked on... quick, simple, totally reliable... -it's the only setting I mess with, since I've not seen consistency with any others on this type connection... >;] ... [ps: Eck: ...I don't have a life, so "...obsessing..." about insignificant, petty things is pretty much my primary hobby. ] ... [pps: hmm, I'm really thinking about doing the "dual 98" OS thing, one w/98se2me, one without, for 3 reasons now: 1) the reason mentioned previously; see 2 posts ago; 2) it would also make a nice testbed for any potential probs w/98se2me, "ME" updates, etc... 3) ...and it wouldn't take much effort, just an additional 2 directories and the occasional extra few minutes to apply the secondary updates each time... worth it ]
  22. -yes, of course, just the updates, not the whole giant install package(s)... I agree. ... -and it's probably primarily just my luck (curse), that every puter, old+new, that I've worked on has hated IE6... or perhaps it's just my intense lack of patience... a tiny delay for every click, both inside & outside of IE, is probably nothing big for most people, but I hate it, it just gets on my nerves, as does the other many annoyances of IE6... >;] ps: and you're of course absolutely right, a download manager is VITAL for dial-up, I occasionally still use Net Transport (free) for slow downloads, even with my 5mbps comcast cable modem... very helpful...
  23. -as I'm sure many others strongly agree, I also enthusiastically support the idea of both IE 5.5sp2 and 6.0sp1 additional update options in this sp... imo this has been one HUGE weakness of the otherwise awesome sp... The primary reason/concern for not including such *vital* updates of "well, it'll make the sp too big for dialup users" is really crap, I mean come on, how often has this sp been updated? Dialup users are used to waiting for things to download all the time, so having to wait maybe once per month (per new update) is nothing to them... I strongly disagree that it'll have any impact on the decision to download. ... I also (strongly) agree that forcing 6.0sp1 would be a VERY bad idea... Every 98se puter that I (grudgingly) occasionally "upgrade" to 6.0sp1 (a total of 6 puters, old and new) behaves VERY badly afterwards, slowing down EVERY SINGLE CLICK in the OS, even when not actively running IE at the time! VERY annoying, along with so many other annoying things I won't elaborate upon (again) here... [and trying to roll back IE6 to IE5.5 has recently totally screwed one of my otherwise stable/fast win98se installations...grr!]... I've never had a single infection on any puters I have, and I'll stick with IE5.5sp2 NO MATTER WHAT until that ever changes... -as a matter of fact, can anybody provide an actual, real-life, RECENT case senario where a 98se+98se2me+FULLY updated IE5.5sp2 (incl Unofficial updates) system HAS been infected, when IE6 would've NOT been? And of course don't include ActiveX/email/cracks/warez etc infections, in most cases only idiots/noobs allow those to happen, not IE5.5sp2's fault at all... ... [-whatever is chosen, I of course still greatly appreciate the sp...]
  24. 1) -MDGx, the poster asking about network speeds I believe was referring to speeds between LAN'd puters, not internet transfers, and I've wondered myself lately, because when running XP on BOTH puters, my transfers between them are very much faster, but if either puter has 98se running it's slow (have tried it w/2 diff routers, and several different network drivers)... I haven't tried it w/OS installs without 98se2me, tho, so don't know if it's 98se2me or just 98se vs. XP (which is probably the case)... ... 2) -thx for offering the additional info in future updates, appreciate it! I've noticed in the past that u also update 98se2me when appropriate, but lately didn't notice this trend (always) continuing, and your update thread's statement of "some [ME patches] have already been added to 98SE2ME" kinda made me worry that we/I might be missing some... but I'll just keep an eye on both threads, as always, and trust that all is well (I'll firmly stamp my OCD worry-instinct into the ground, lol) ... 3) -when u do occasionally remove a (troublesome) ME replacement file from 98se2me's list, how do we know where to get the latest (possibly updated) win98se file? The original OS CD/cab's file(s) may very likely be outdated, buggy, security-flawed, etc, so is there some (easy) way to find out if that particular file has been updated, and which is the latest version, without plying thru every MS official AND unofficial update package to see if that file is listed, and if so, which update contains the latest version? A VERY daunting task, indeed! -the only way I can think of, is to keep two constantly updated OS versions going: one with 98se2me, and one without, as comparison... which is kinda annoying, as well, tho much less so perhaps and undoubtably safest... any other ideas? (I of course deliberately don't mention trusting WinUpdate in this regard)
