  1. Have you tired to ping the router from the w9x machines, and have you tried to ping the vista machine from the w9x and vice versa? Vista's firewall may be blocking everything. Also make sure that vista is set to private network not public.
  2. Please bear with me as i a total newbie when it comes to servers. I have recently been given a old server that has WinNT4 Server. I want to know if it can be made to share my internet conection. I know I have to pop in another NIC so that there is one for the incoming Internet connection, and one for my LAN. It's current internal LAN is set to 10.x.x.x Can I simply configure a router to the same 10.x.x.x and have the router do all the work? Will it work this way? Or do I have to let the server handle it? Any help would be great Thankyou for your time.
  3. Have you tried liteshell? it's the smallest shell i have ever seen. I've used it on win9x machine with less than 32mb and it works great! http://www.labyrinth.net.au/~mosses/rob/liteshell.html check it out, you might like it. Here is a quick description from the author "LiteShell is a replacement shell for Windows. LiteShell is a minimalist's shell - no screen space is occupied by the shell. When you right-click on the desktop or press a hotkey, a menu provides access to your programs, documents, tasks and anything else you wish. LiteShell provides support for "hotkeys" - key combinations that, when pressed, can perform actions such as running programs. Any system capable of running Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 or XP is able to run LiteShell. LiteShell requires less than 500kb of disk space and will run on systems with 4mb RAM (and possibly even less)."
  4. http://www.free-av.com/en/tools/11/avira_n...s_personal.html Has anyone ever tried it? I stumbled upon it while looking for a decent free anti virus. According to the docs http://www.free-av.com/documents/products/...dos_pers_en.pdf It says that it can be used in a dos box in win 98/me. I wanted some feedback on it if anyone has tried it. Thanks
  5. Have you tired removing the hard drive, putting it another pc, formating, transfer sys (sys a: x:) , then copying the windows setup files to it? x: should be the letter that the drive is assigned on the other pc.
  6. You could use the following program http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/ Here is a screen shot http://www.blueorbsoft.com/ScanDefrag/ScanDefrag1.jpg The readme is here http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/Readme.html it can run both scan disk then defrag before the windows shell load, that way you can avoid defrag restarting all the time. It also has more agressive modes that prevent other programs from loading on boot, this way defrag will not have to restart. Once the defrag is done, the pc will reboot in a normal mode. The readme explains it better than I have.
  7. For NOD32 there is a option to turn it off, go to NOD32 system tools, then into NOD32 system start up. Click on setup, you should see a option to turn off the splash screen. As for outlook express a quick google search will help you there.
  8. Thankyou for your help, while this a quick of getting there it's not quite what i was looking for. this solution takes 2 steps, I was looking for a direct way of accessing it.
  9. Is there a way to quickly get to the Vista Network Map like a shortcut?

After the first time nothing else shows up but the popup still appear only when i open "My Pictures". I notice that ther is a bit of a wait when i open the Pictures foler. Has anyone heard of this before? Also can anyone recommend a program that show me what is going on when i open that folder, I want to find out what is being run when i open te folder either program or script. Also hijack this shows me nothing supicous Any help would be great

  21. While reading other forums i stumbled on this http://www.frontmotion.com/FMLogin/index.htm "FrontMotion Login is the next generation logon interface for Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It goes beyond the normal Microsoft Windows logon and offers more interactivity and functionality through the use of Macromedia Flash and our custom logon implementation (gina). No DLL hacking is needed and no system files are replaced. Free for personal and commercial use." At the bottom of the page it also states it works with 2k3. They also have a few themes, since it used flash, I'm sure someone can make really nice eye candy. Quick Download: http://download.frontmotion.com/FMLogin/FM...n-1.1.2.164.msi Themes page: http://www.frontmotion.com/themes.htm Try it out.
  22. I have tried it in 4 more machines, so far no problem and same effect . it boots to the logo almost instantly. I was also able to do this without going into safe mode. Edit: Just back with more to report, I've installed this on as many 2k boxes as i could only, no set backs yet, all works fine and boot times are shorter. Please tell me if you have tried it and your impressions on it. I'd really like to know, thanks
  23. Over at the Neowin forums i ran into this topic http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=305221 they suggested replacing the nt boot loader of 2k with that of xp to speed up the booting process. after some looking on the web i was able to do it. it does help. it does boot faster than it did before, as in getting to the logo faster. the two files I replaced are ntdetect.com and ntldr i would say about a 5 seconds faster. Try it out on your test machines and let me know if it works for you and how much faster it boots
