thank s for the urls Tain. i've tried a couple of them but they too exspensive and some didn't work. bartpe comes with a plugin call "penetcfg". the executable file,"penetcfg.exe", that is in the plugin works but is slow and requires manual editing. it does work however, and is freestanding and cheap{free}. i will stick penetcfg unless i find a better solution.

i have used to guide and at this point i will have to say it doesn't work. i must be able to use a dhcp server to obtain the i.p. apparently this part of the program doesn't work. i am not able to change workgroups or any other settings either.

dhcp is not disabled. i enable all network related services and some others trying to get it to work but nothing helps.

don't rename them. the names are the same for all manufacturers. i keep the ones that i have in separate folders: HPpro folder,HPhome folder,etc.

it appears to do what i need but it doesn't seem to work. when i click the "Activate" button a window pops up{PLease wait....... Applying Settings....} but does nothing. i click the "Refresh" button, i get an error message saying that "service could not be started,because it is disabled or no enable devices are associated with it".

i need a freeware and free standing program {no installation required} so that i can change "Workgroup" and the default gateway/router i.p. it would be used on a laptop that needs to connect to several different workgroups and gateways/routers. i've searched google and sourceforge without luck. there are some commerical programs but they require installation. a script or a .cmd file would work. does anyone know of such a thing?

i have tested HP pro and home on a HP Pavillon. both work without problems. my source for Gateway has not come thru,yet.

i think the old dual modem set up worked by having one line inbound and the other line outbound. maybe an adjustment to QOS?

@mritter mshta.exe is still in system32 after removing i.e. double clicking the old WPI.cmd or WPI.hta would not start WPI. it will be necessary to "choose" a program to open it with and the browse for mshta.exe and choosing it to get WPI started. i assume WPI 5.0 will be the same. there is no way that i will leave i.e. on my system. it's too be a virus and exploit honey pot.

i remove i.e. from my os and use firefox. i use WPI on a standalone cd. is the anyway that WPI could "look" for mshta.exe automatically instead of having to browse for it in c:\windows\system32?

sorry, i haven't seen anything like what you want.

there's a plugin that will install bartpe on a hdd. it will format the drive but i think the partioning part is buggy{i have always used a single partion, that works fine} i think the plugin comes with bartpe but you will have activate it. it say's something like "install bartpe on the hard drive" in the menu. that web site i posted earlier should be of help to you.

i wish i had read this thread several days ago. a friend messed up his HP oem installation and had to reinstall it. the "rescue" partion would not work so he bought another xp home cd. having the original "install" key might have saved him all the hassle of online activation.

teqguy, there are a lot of people who will disagree with you on defragging drives. i don't. i stopped years ago when is switched from win9x. with the small amount of active files microwinx has i can't see anyone ever needing to defrag.
