  1. OK the problem I see with this though is I need to map certain drives with certain users. Here's how I think it should be, pease correct me if I'm wrong. User.cmd net user user1 123456 /add net localgroup users user1 /add net accounts /maxpwage:unlimited REGEDIT /S autologon.reg EXIT net user user2 123456 /add net localgroup users user2 /add net accounts /maxpwage:unlimited REGEDIT /S autologon.reg EXIT net user user3 123456 /add net localgroup users user3 /add net accounts /maxpwage:unlimited REGEDIT /S autologon.reg EXIT Mapdrive.cmd NET USE H \\computername\sharename\applications /user:workgroup\user1 123456 NET USE H \\computername\sharename\applications /user:workgroup\user2 123456 NET USE H \\computername\sharename\applications /user:workgroup\user3 123456 NET USE J \\computername\sharename\user1 /user:workgroup\user1 123456 NET USE J \\computername\sharename\user2 /user:workgroup\user2 123456 NET USE J \\computername\sharename\user3 /user:workgroup\user3 123456 The H drive will have the applications on it Office, Adobe, etc. The J drive is for each users personal folder which the other users can't see. If there is something I'am missing please inform. Thanks jd
  2. Yes the good ole Amiga days. I am happy to say I kept all 3 of my amiga 2000's, 1 A1000, 2 A500 for a total of 6 Amigas. And my original C=64 with tape drive and 1541&1581 floppy drives. And they all still work . No worries with Virus and CRAP!!!! I have 1 A2000 networked with Bridgeboard and the Mac emulator, and a place for the A500 when ever I get the urge to turn it on. It's also funny how a 68000 7.14 MHz machine can boot faster than a MS box. Mine are also modded such a beautiful machine. jd
  3. Ya, just had too. To be serious though you might want to check this site out. http://www.housebot.com/ jd
  4. everyone!! I'm getting ready to redo my Unattended files and was wondering how to go about setting up mapped drives with letters for the users in our workgroup. I use the useraccounts.cmd for adding users, but how can I get the drives that they have permissions for to get mapped during the install and stay connected. I searched the board but couldn't find anything on this topic. I know about this [Commands] ".\net use s: \\server\share /user:Domainname\Username password /persistent:no" But how would I map each users drive with letter and also have the applications from the application drive install. Example on the applications: Application drive=H MS Office is on H: with an administrative share. Install and still leave H: as the application drive. These drives would need to reconnect each time the user logs in. Thanks jd
  5. Don't forget the "CLAPPER" clap your hands once light comes on. jd
  6. As was stated before just get another one. They are so CHEAP right now. I just purchased (2 weeks) ago a NEC-3550 DVD-Dual Layer and so far everything burns and reads properly. Price was like 35.00 at http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/Category.asp?Category=10 jd
  7. There are many ways of doing this. Myself, I used Toggle Bolts that you make a small hole in the wall and then punch them thru. My satellites weigh in at about 9.5 lbs, and they have been mounted since 2003 with nothing coming loose. Check with your local hardware store and if your not sure what you need ask the sales person. If the salesperson hands you something and says they will handle 5 lbs. ask for something that will handle 10. Might be overkill but you don't want speakers falling. Toggler even has an application finder on it's site to help with deciding on what to use. Whatever you do here go cheap on the beer and expensive on the hangers. Here's a few links. From Overclockers http://www.overclockers.com/articles818/ TOGGLER® Anchor System http://www.toggler.com/ jd
  8. The continuing quest. Well I found a neat little lawn mower filter which fit's a 80mm fan nice with about 1/8" extra on the sides. Question I have now is what fan do I use to put about 5lbs+ of positive air pressure into the case, and still keep it quiet. There are so many fans out there 80mm wise that to read thru all of them is going to be exhuastive. Thanks jd PS: I tried the filter with the 80mm fan I had laying around and found very little dust on the mirror I used to check for filtration. You can also breath thru this filter very easily and it costs just under $5.00 US.
  9. Thanks LLXX, Ya kinda figured that one. I'm working on a few ideas right now as far as fan, flow distribution, and filters. I'am sure other people have worked on these theories in the past, as there really is a lot out there to look at. Trying to workout a nice laminar flow inside the case, without turbulance. jd
  10. Here's that setup. Not for the average home user, but hey if it works. http://www.overclockers.com/tips1092/ jd
  11. Hey Ripken, What type do you have? If they are the wire mesh type how good are they for the minute dust particles? I saw a setup on the net late last night using car airfilters with what looked to be a 120mm fan sucking air thru the filter. Was connected to the back of the case using what looked like a dryer vent line. Our dog is an outside guy, he don't like the indoors much. Thanks jd
  12. Hi All, Thinking of putting filters on all my boxes as we have had construction going on in the area and will be for about a year. Anybody try these wire mesh computer filters? Seems to me they wouldn't filter alot of the minute dust particles compared to say a paper filter type. They just don't look tight in the mesh for anything good. I have noticed the temps rising on all the desktops, and I just cleaned them a week ago and found a good layer of dust already inside. I've checked a few different places, but the filters mesh just looks too loose. Anybody ever do this with what's available on the market, wire mesh? If so what were the results? http://www.xoxide.com/fanfilter.html http://www.devhardware.com/c/a/Computer-Cases/Fan-Filters/ http://www.directron.com/filterguards.html Just seems to me that you would want low restriction on air flow but high on filtration. I guess maybe I'm comparing the wire mesh to the same as what you would find over your stove as a grease trap. Been thinking about trying out one of my shop vac bags by cutting it and placing over the fan just to see what happens. The type I use for the shop vac are close to a HEPA certification for drywall dust. And you can actually breathe through them. Ideas, Opinions?? Thanks jd
  13. Sorry for long. I have to agree Ghost has got to be the best to use. I'm using Ghost 2003, and have used ghost products since "Norton" released it. The way I do my back ups is like this. 1. Install OS, Drivers, Service Packs, critical updates only. Then Backup 2. Install all my applications. Then Backup 3. Install Aplication Updates. Then Backup I do all this before going on the net. Before I do a clean install which I will be backing up I download all the updates I need for that particular time. I also create a text file in the ROOT of the system drive "C:" with all information pertaining to that update/backup. Here's is one of mine. 110905A Base install of XP. User accounts configured, drives mapped. Following Programs installed, DotNetV2.0, Media Player 10, DirectX 9C, MSXML, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0. All updates as of 11/9/2005 installed. 110905B Following Programs installed. Firefox V1.0.7, Java 1.5.0.5, Flash Player, Shockwave, AVG, Winzip, Diskeeper, R-Studio NTFS Recovery, T-Bird E-mail. Drive C; Has been scanned and defragged. 111705A Office Resource installed, Internet Explorer set for Blank Page upon startup. AVG Virus dat files updated. 111705B MS Office 2000 Installed with all updates as of 111705. NO OTHER CHANGES. 111705C Open Office 1.1.4 Installed for all users. NO OTHER CHANGES. 120105 Following Programs installed. Irfanview, Adobe Reader 7.05, CCleaner, UPH Cleaner, Ulead V9.0, Ghost 2003, DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, Nero No Updates, Latest AVG Virus Definitions, Latest MS AntiSpyware Definitions, Power DVD, 120305A Following Programs installed. New Version MS AntiSpyware V1c installed. Nlite, Speedfan, DVD Profiler, Zero Asumption image recovery. 122105A MS Monthly updates installed, Java updates installed, AVG Antivirus CORE and definitions updated. 011206A MS Monthly updates installed, AVG Antivirus CORE and definitions updated, Rename Installed. 012706A AVG Antivirus CORE and definitions updated, Winfax Pro 10.02 installed and configured. DotNET V2.0 Release installed. NLite RC5 installed. Disk keeper configured to run at 24 hour periods. starting @ 12:01 a.m. 021506A MS Monthly updates installed, AVG Antivirus CORE and definitions updated 031906A MS Monthly updates installed, AVG Antivirus CORE and definitions updated, Firefox updated to 1.5.0.1 I give the text file a date format such as this 031906A. The 6 digits represent the Month, Date, and year. The A I put in there as a Revision type reference. This way if I do 2 backups in one day due to installing something I have the flexibility of just adding a letter. Yeah it may be overkill but I don't have to look through a bunch of CD/DVD's to find what I need. I also backup to my file server so I have 2 copies of it. After a year I purge everything except the first and second backup. And if you use Nlite you can slipstream your Svc. Packs and Critical updates. I also reflash the hard drive before installing the monthly MS updates to be sure I don't have any CRAP on the drive when installing new updates. Then just re-ghost image. Hope this helps. jd
  14. theUtmost, Yeah who knows what works at the fastest speed. I do know when I tried WinPE and Sysprep that it really seemed ALOT slower transferring over the network. In DOS mode using TCP/IP you can barely see the names of the files (10/100 network). The actual process time when the files have been copied over and install actually takes place, is BLAZINGLY fast. So this is still one of those things that what works great for one doesn't always mean the same for another. If I get a chance I will do up a NetBUI disk and check it with a Stopwatch. jd
  15. @ theUtmost and the rest, Which is actually best NetBui or TCP/IP?? I am REALLY new to this scripting to the server and would like to know the HARD FACTS. Currently I have just put together a TCP/IP using the boot disk from http://www.netbootdisk.com/index.htm. My login batch file is 4 lines from the floppy. net use z: \\file-server\OS z: cd\prep gdisk.bat The batch file from the server is here. gdisk 1 /batch:param1.gg lh smartdrv.exe cd\htpc\i386 WINNT.EXE /u:UNATTEND.txt /s:z:\HTPC\i386 This will automatically start the install process using winnt.exe. My understanding is that NetBui is slower than TCP/IP and that is why I have never tried it. So if there is something I am missing please let me know. I have tried this method so far with 3 Desktops with no problems with OS install. I do have a problem installing the driver packs though, they all install except the audio drivers. And then then as I log in, a message box comes up with "cmd.exe There is no disk in the drive". This I'm sure is just a drive letter that needs to be changed as the OS loads up fine. Thanks JD
  16. To Djé and everyone following this topic. I had MANY problems using "Ghost's" network boot and Bart's NetBoot Disk and others. While I am in the procecess of starting a project related to this thread. I have found Universal Network Boot Disk at http://www.netbootdisk.com/ to RELIABLY connect all the time. Don't know if this helps anyone, but I am having NO problems connecting. John
  17. Aegis, Just get some SCRAP components, PCB and try it. After all you weren't born already making the Gamer's Edition. You had to learn programming. Hardware is no different really, just practice it. Or if you know someone close that has the abilities have him/her do it. WATCH-N-LEARN. Alot of people are scared soldering surface mount components, being a hardware field support person I don't have the luxury of all the neat soldering tools for surface mount components. I just use my standard Weller Bench soldering iron that I have had for as long as I have been with the company 12+ years. jd
  18. Aegis, Get a solder sucker/solder wick to remove solder/components. Becareful here as you don't want to damage the traces or pads. Get a grounding strap, a wristband that connects to a grounded workbench. 50K VR is a 50,000 ohm Variable resistor. You will also NEED a AVM Analog Volt Meter or a DVM Digital Volt Meter. That pencil stuff is fun. OC'd my athlons using that method. Replacement: 1. Using the grounding strap connect to GROUNDED work bench. If you don't you can damage the components on the board. (Don't let the smoke out) 2. You need a GOOD soldering iron and electronics solder. 3. Solder sucker or use solder wick to remove the solder from the backside of the board (where the components legs stick out from backside of PC Board). 4. Remove component, clean the solder holes real good with solder flux, soldering iron and solder wick. This will remove any stray solder from the holes. 5. Put Variable resistor in and solder. 6. Adjust VR according to their discussion. If you blow something up I am NOT RESPONSIBLE!! jd

  20. gdogg, Your project sounds interesting. Have been watching the threads on it for sometime. Question I have is how compatible will it be with a HTPC?? Sounds great and can't wait to see the BLOAT FREE XP!! CYA jd
  21. puntoMX Try here http://shop1.outpost.com/search?cat=-48952&pType=pDisplay Seagate ST310011A-RK 100GB PATA $79.99 They do advertise international. I have dealt with this company also before it was publicly advertised with Fry's. Fry's is a BIG west coast store like Compusa. JD
  22. I agree with not buying Maxtor. I have bought Maxtor drives before (years 2000-2003). And everyone of them just days or maybe a week would pass after the warranty expired and the drives would die. These were replaced with Seagates. I have just 2 left where the warranty is about to expire and have already ordered Seagate replacements. Prior to buying Maxtor drives it was strictly WD/Seagate, but Seagate started raising their prices and WD I started having problems with NEW drives, that is why I went to Maxtor. I still have a VERY old Maxtor 540 Meg Scsi that works like a charm. It is connected to my Amiga 2000 and has been running since 1994. So if you are just looking for a replacement drive GO SEAGATE. The drives are VERY quiet and the 5 YEAR Warranty can't be beat. Here's a GREAT place to buy. http://www.newegg.com/ jd
  23. Make sure that your path is set as net use u: \\computername\sharename and not net use u: \\computer name\share name I have had a few times when I made a share on the remote with a shared folder with a space in the name. Check your shared system name and folder. jd
  24. Not sure what your problem is with install. But you REALLY should remove your product ID Key. jd
  25. Hi all Just wondering if anyone has had the great experience in installing any of the games I have listed below on XP Pro SP2. My son is 7 years old and has a BUNCH of childrens games. His machine has been running 98SE, and I want to get rid of it and put XP on it. His machine is the only one also in the house not hooked up to the internet and this is another reason for going to XP. He will be needing internet access in order to login to his school account for misc. activities during summer. I know I could set it up as a dual boot but I really would rather not. I know 2000 pro won't run his games as I tried that 3 years ago, and NOTHING of his games would run. The other reason he will need XP is I will be setting up his media section for children's movies and he will need network connectivity to our file server. I will also be using Game Drive with this for the games. 1. Thomas The Tank Engine (Full Series) 2. Scooby Doo (Full Series) 3. Sponge Bob Square Pants 4. Reader Rabbit (Full Series) There's several more but hopefully if this will get me going I should be able to get the rest going. Thanks John
