Superscotty19 Give them a pre-build appearence sheme that looks nice (even no SP needed for that). I made myself a sheme with peach windows, and gree-blue to dark-blue fade away in the title bar. Then I installed Eppie and I added my nicely colored self-made control buttons. It looks terrific. I even didn't install the 2000 themes from the SP. You can also give the opposite effect by selecting "High Contrast White" or "High Contrast Black" sheme. Check also Tihy's Revolution Pack. Sounds promising...

I was running a version of SP2.0 that was not supposed to be compatible with my OS and it was working (in fact I had problems, but not related to that). I think you can safely give a try to the eng version. If it doesn't work, just re-install Windows over it. Maybe the only thing you will get will be message-popups in english instead of spanish. For what I'v read there is already a french, a german and soon, a dutch version. -
I think it's when you instal SP2.0rc2 over a former version of SP. I had the pleasure (ho yes, it was such a pleasure! lol. Gape, see my thread.) to instal and unistal W98se and SP2.0 many times and I noticed that when installed on w98se without SP, there is no missing-file message. Try installing the original w98se before upgrading to SP2.0...

Hd Intensive Work Very Very Slow After Sp2.0rc1

BINGO! After many disastrous atempts to change the IDE driver, several re-instals and many total crashes...I sudenly had an idea: I re-installed normal windows98se, looked what were the IDE drivers files in "view file details" and saved them in a zip file. I installed SP2.0. Then I replaced the IDE driver files by the original ones previousely saved in the zip file. And it worked! Now I will start enjoying SP2.0 like all of you! hehehehe! But I have lost a total of 10 hours on this problem alone... -

eptrude8 I have installed the r204a package (year 2003). Did you? Are you sure you don't have the same problem as mine? (I noticed it only after a few days) -
I'm using Icon-Restore and I'm very happy with it. It's much easier than with tweak UI. I'm also using Refresh 'Em for the icon cache.

It has been 7 years since Win98 was released
Fredledingue replied to un4given1's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Un4given I'm still waiting to see what are these features (except of course network administrator tools because I don't use them). On the XP computer, the first thing I did was disabling the password and logon so that I can use it as a w98. I feel more confortable when there is one deskstop, on document folder, etc. If not it's like you have to manage different computers within the same one. The problem with XP is that it's not a home OS. For your company it's good, (thought for that, I would expect less security breaches), but for a personal computer I never found any feature that was a + versus w98. -

Yes, I have dowload a driver from there. I ran the installation but it didn't help. When should I install this up-to-date driver? Before or after running SP2.0? How can I replace the existing driver by this one? (when I delete it from the Device Manager and windows look for a driver again, I can't select a location and point to this driver because there is no INF files with it...) Well...we are here to try... -

Gape When my system was working again I did one more try. I did exactely what you said, rebooted in safe mode, removed the IDE drivers in Device Manager, restarted normaly, let it find the best driver etc... without effect. The problem is still there and the only way I know so far to remove this f@#! MS-dos compatibility mode on my hard drives is to reinstall windows. (I'm even lucky when it let my cd-rom drives available) So, please, what are the files or settings that i should preserve so that SP2.0 doesn't mess with the IDE drivers? -

OK, I have for the nth time reinstalled W98se via bootable floppy. (I have also made a copy of the installation cd-rom of w98se and the sis drivers on the hard drive for the next time.) I was trying to reinstall the sis drivers after installing SP0.2, but it didn't help. What are the files or settings that i should preserve so that SP2.0 doesn't mess with the IDE drivers? -

I removed the Sis Dual IDE controler, then replaced it by Standard Microsoft IDE controler after reboot. I got a blue screen reading I was never able to restart my computer other than by pressing the reset button. There were problem with drives A,C and D now. I restarted in safe mode and removed the standard driver. I replaced it by the Sis Dual IDE controler after reboot. I restarted normaly. The problem with drive A disapeared but the problem with drives C and D remained as before. And now I can't see my CD-ROM drives anymore! PLEASE HELP! -

Gape Thanks for your anwser. I'm now far from my computer (FFMC) and I will be able to fix that only in 3 weeks when I'll be back home. This is what I did before reading your last post. I think it may be important you read this: I uninstalled the SP2.0 from the control panel's uninstal manager. Then again, I couldn't restart my computer. The black screens were going normaly until I could read "can't find MYMEM.SYS", "can't start" some exe (I couldn't read properly because everything went so fast), then it read "Windows failed to start. Please reinstal windows". And the computer shut down himself half a second later. I had to reinstal w98 from the CD, via a bootable floppydisk. (only the 3d time in a week ) Now the problem with the IDE is fixed, but I have the SP2.0 uninstalled of course. When I'll be back home I will reinstall it and do the trick you suggested. What I want to suggest after this experience is that you check what can cause a restart failure after an uninstal. (Eventhought it could be that my system files was already severly corrupted from some previous operations.) Unless you know already what's that all about. Second that you advice poeple who instal/unistal SP2.0, to get a boot disk handy. -------------------- erpdude8 v.6 I think. Anyway, it's not a problem with nero, it was clearly a problem with the IDE drivers. The example with nero just illustrated what can happend with this kind of problem. -

I just downloaded and installed a 5Mb IDE driver from SiS...no effect. I checked Control Panel/System/Performance It says the following: Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance. Drive C is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system. Drive D is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system. The help reads: _____________________ Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance. Windows was unable to identify a real-mode driver or memory-resident program loaded in your Config.sys or Autoexec.bat file. You will see another message that lists the name of the driver or program causing the problem. Because Windows could not identify the driver or program, it has switched to MS-DOS compatibility mode to ensure the program will run. However, this decreases overall performance. To improve performance, remove the program or driver causing the problem, or contact its manufacturer for an upgraded version. Now, I disabled both autoexec.bat and config.sys in the Start Up Configuration utility. No effect neither. ____________________ Drive X is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system. This problem often occurs on more than one drive. Usually it is caused by a driver listed in the Config.sys file that Windows does not recognize and that is related to the message Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance. If you see both messages, see the Help for the Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance message first. If you only see the message Drive X is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system on one drive, that drive is using an MS-DOS compatibility (real-mode) driver, which may reduce that drive’s performance. Contact your hardware manufacturer to see if an updated driver is available for your drive. If not, the drive’s performance may be less than optimal, but you can still use it. -

SiS IDE drivers? Yes. I ran the main set up from the Sis mainboard cd-rom. Nothing changed. Then on this cd-rom I found a directory with IDE drivers. I installed the IDE driver for w9x then I couldn't restart my computer: Black screen. I restarted in save mode but the CD-rom drives were not visible anymore. With another computer I copied the IDE driver installation files on a floppy. I ran the uninstal from the floppy and now everything is like before the IDE drivers installation. Note that I never installed this driver before, I only did the main set up. The problem with Virtual Dub remains, but I'm sure that the drivers as I had before were re-installed. Even more hard drive problem: Nero is very slow too. I wrote 700Mb on a normal CD-r at 32X. Normaly it should take 3 minutes. Now it takes 6min30! The used buffer is at max. But the Buffer Level (the small progress bar) is abnormaly low and very variable (from 5% to 80%) while normaly it should stay between 90% and 100%. -

Ok, I re-installed SP2.0 RC1 english but it didn't help and the Primary IDE controller problem is still there. one more detail about Virtual Dub: The statu window when the operation is running, is freezing from time to time. For example there is a box "Time elapsed". Normaly on this box you should see the seconds counting up one by one. 32,33,34,35,36,37 etc. Here it goes like that: 32,(wait),40, (wait),45,(wait),47,(wait),51 etc -

No you can't because it's not my biggest complain. I don't have "big" complain against XP. I'm just upset about these continuous rumors that XP "is easier to use", "lots of media enhancement", "everybody feel at home" and all these craps. Does XP include a mecanic arm with a white glove poping out the screen to serve you a cup of coffee? No. So, as long as it doesn't, I'll stay with w98... -

No, I didn't feel at home with XP, that's why I stayed with 98.How I could live when My Documents are not in C:\? It would be nice to see how many of those who threaten to move to linux actually stay with it. Yeah, there was many reasons why I didn't go Linux. And most of those who stay with Linux, even the Linux fans, have dual-boot with windows... If you dual-boot it's a proff that your OS miss something. -
First problem after installing SP2.0rc1b; -I open Virtual Dub (version 5.1.5.1-P4) -click Video, Direct Stream Copy -Open a +- 350 Mb AVI file -Append another +- 350 Mb AVI File (or even not but that's just to do something) -Save as Avi As both audio and video are in "Direct Stream copy" mode there is no image or sound processing. VirtualDub is merely copying datas from two files to merge them in one single file but it's playing with hundreds of Mb at once. Normaly, when no other program are in use, this task should takes 2 or 3 minutes but after the upgrade with SP2.0RC1b, it takes 8 to 10 minutes! However, the computer is not slower when compressing video to DivX, which is, unlike dierct stream copy, very CPU intensive and little Hard Drive intensive. So, it's a problem with reading/writing the hard drive... -------------- 1.8Ghz P4 120 Gb Teak HD 512 DDR

In western europe, the Home edition (Belgium) it's 100 euros (125$) with or without hardware(+-). In eastern europe it's usualy free with hardware and 5$ without (but always the Pro version) . So it's not realy a question of price. XP is more stable than 98 (that's not questionned). But instead of XP, I was seriousely contemplating Linux when my W98 crashed for the nth time in a row. Fortunately SP2.0 saved me from migration and it seems I didn't have a crash in the last week I ran the pack.
