  1. In Europe XP Home cost +- 100 euros (125 USD). How come you get it so expensive? Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, it was not a question of money if I kept w98. suryad Now we have w98's SP2.0 instead of XP
  2. Why you want to make everybody think that you are working on XP while it's W98? Pushing the 98-2-XP fashion to the extreme?
  3. yes, that would be cool.
  4. Yes, for me "learning curve" means "bad" because realy professional software should have easy and fast interface to work faster. Adobe Premiere is used by professionals because it can do a few things that other softwares can't do but if I was a professional I would use it only for these few things and would choose other programs whenever it's possible. 100% wrong? and many many many more... http://forums.divx.com/eve/ubb.x?a=search&...0&search=Search -sorry for the long post-
  5. Go to "Unofficial Win98 SE Service Pack" section' main topic, http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=38183 The Service Pack has a fix for usb mass storage. It may not resolve your problem since it's not realy a mass storage here. Some drivers may be needed. The SP is recommanded anyway since it fixes many issues.
  6. It's true Ulead Media Studio does almost what Premiere does lbeit not all. That Adobe Premiere can do a lot of things doesn't mean is not a bad software computerly speaking. It's a bad software with lots of tools. Adobe products also very difficult to use. It's a common understanding that it takes at least one month of practice before you fully master them. And at least a few days before you even start. One year ago it was still impossible to edit and export DivX movies with it. It was one of the very rare video editor that couldn't do that. I spent 2 years and half on the DivX forum as Trusted DivX Wise Man (you wanted credentials, here you go LOL) and half of the posts were problems with Adobe Premiere. I hoped they fixed that now. w98 doesn't have problem with Adobe. I don't remember having had this kind of problem resilent with theyr softwares. Sometimes, but not always. From my own experience, when a program crashes on w98, on 100% of cases: ± ... 40% it leaves the system normal, 25% it leaves the system slightly slower, 20% it leaves the system highly unstable albeit usable if necessary but require reboot 10% it leaves the system not responding, eventualy with a BSOD but with the possibility of restarting with Ctr+Alt+Del, 5% it leaves the system completely dead and require pressing the reset buton.
  7. What the hell do you mean?
  8. Un4given, Yes, I know what Premiere is. I'v tried it. But Adobe products are all sucking bloatwares. Yes, some poeple are fan of the 60's me it's the 90's LOL.No. you know I'm not IT manager @MultiBillionCorp.com. I the place I live it's simply too far from the adsl server. No, to the contrary: Gape's SP2 are going to make XP obsolete soon, you will see.
  9. Rectification for metapad I was wrong:In fact you can select the font that you wish. Even better you can and easily switch between two custom fonts. horsecharles ???? jasinwa We didn't pretend to list all the notepad replacements here. Thanks for the link, More choice is always good. soldier1st What set-up? It's supposed to open text in a heartbeat, I had to wait up to 10 seconds in some cases (files about 120 kb), less for small files. Then the scrolling has some refresh problem. No such problem with metapad. Did you try opening large files? Also I don't like the random coloring. (I know its not random, but for me it looked so).
  10. It's been a long time I didn't open Explorer... Xplorer2 is the way to go. I think it's easier for everybody to offer links to good frewares than trying to do the same while losing time hacking M$ monkeyware. B)
  11. Either these benchmark tests suck, either one of the component (eg; w98lite) shouldn't have been installed. The most important question is "Are your games playing fine?" If yes, you don't need benchmarking. Maybe you should erase your hd and completely reinstall w98 without all the unofficial packs. Then try. Install the packs and try again.
  12. ok, that's fun: In 6 years I remember to have ned it only once. Usualy inserting the W98 CD-rom does a system restore for me except one or two consmetic things. Is Zone-Alarm free a firewall, if I'm not mistaken? Anyway I don't need it for the 2 or 3 hours per day on a 56k modem. And a case where the best is worse than the good. Usualy cd burned with XP won't be readable on another platform. Maybe not on another comp because it use the open-session method. A real sh*t. That's why everybody who has XP install Nero. How did japanese and coreans before XP? They wrote in the latin alphabet only? Nor do I. Maybe some bla-bla to look high tech and justify waste of CPU cycles. And not as good as the F8 key! LOL. I agree. Online conferencing is enhanced basicaly by high bitrate communications and secondarily by a good hardware. The software is supposed to be delivered by the conference service provider who will make his own W98 version. There is no need to have that in an OS. At the shop I asled if I could install such thing with w98, they said "no problem". I didn't do it thought. What's that. When Bluetooth 3.0 will come out, this update will be obsolete. Nor do I. I use Maxthon It's stunning that when you compare the XP default apps, and w98 default apps, they are almost the same...
  13. Un4given, Because you are top IT manager and works in a large corp environement, worked for compaq etc, that's why you are alergical to Unofficial Packs, unexpected geek tweaks, free hot fixes etc Go polish your XP Rolls-Royce with you driver. If you like Adobe products, now I understand why like XP. The problem, is that despite all the most recent hardware, your computer will always reacts like a P200. XP is not better because it support 1Gb (you rarely need that much), it's bad because it needs 128Mb minimum. Question of point of view. I don't care if I'm limited to 512Kb, if my w98 runs faster than your XP with 1Gb. Poeple don't buy XP because they have 1Gb ram that allow to have a better computer, they buy 1GB because they need it since XP is installed by the shop and Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat too almost by default. With these softwares that you cherish so much poeple will always be in need for more performant hardware. That's how the commerce works. And this limitation is not true anymore with the SP. It was even not always true before. http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=333688 Gape Feb 11 2005, 01:26 AM Post #19 Yes. SP has carefully selected files and settings (.ini) for supporting 1 GB RAM on the Windows 98 SE. erpdude8 Feb 11 2005, 09:33 AM Post #20 certainly, Fredledingue. just be sure you have installed the right RAM modules for your computer. I assume you are using a relatively new PC that can allow the use of 1 Gb of RAM. Then you can use the memory tweaks Gape mentioned earlier.
  14. Nobody has smaller? Horsecharles, It's good, but it realy looks too much like Notepad, except the windows tile option.
  15. Guys, epsecialy Gape, We are talking about Notepad replacement, not MS-Office Word replacement. personaly I don't want to have 5 rows of toolbars+a system bar, everytime I want to view a password saved in a txt file... (see above what I mean by notepad) Note that AbiWord looks great and would make a great replacement for Wordpad.. I will give it a try.
  16. The power management interface offers only to turn off the monitor. Before running the SP2.0 I had: -monitor -hard drive -system stand by +all my custom profiles vanished...
  17. It's funny sometimes, there is one, most of the time there are two icons... I think I will install the english version but I would like to uninstall the french version to be sure. Is it possible to do that? How?
  18. un4given1 I understand that you had a very bad experience of W98. Was it 98 or 989SE?Because only SE is a wrokable OS. But when you say, "it went almost away with XP" do mean you installed XP on the same computer as W98? I'm surprised that W98 crashed so often with 128Mb of ram and a CPU enough fast to run XP. That being said, Adobe products sucks big time (I avoid them at any cost) and can cause w98 crashing, then a more stable system become necessary. Same with many high profile games when the computer is at the limit of requirement. Now if you want to compare XP with a ferrari, ok, but I would never buy a ferrari: It consume too much gasoline. It's very big car with little room inside. But if speed is concerned, then W98 is like an old BMW that break down from time to time, and XP is a new Rolls Royce, slower but more classy and reliable.
  19. With the implementation of 1Gb memory support in W98SE-SP2.0, you are finished Un4given! W98 perfectely suits our need. remember that we don't have the same needs as yours. We don't have to remotely administrate hundreds of corporate computers all day long. Even for a simple 3 or 4 computer local network, W98 fits albeit XP might be better. But talking about that is like recomanding NT over W98... It's just two diferent things. With XP we are forced to have W98+W2000+NT+XP. If W98 didn't crash, 95% of PC users wouldn't need to upgrade to XP. And with the unofficial SP that M$ never wanted to make available it will make XP obsolete. There is absolutely ZERO multimedia enhancement in XP, from W98. It's just a rumor. I'm using my PC as a video recorder, a DivX compressor, a sound recorder, a cd player, a Tv, a telephone, a video conference, etc all this on W98 without problem. Even better: when W98 crashed, it was always when I didn't do these type of things. When I'm on XP , I see nothing that makes these task easier or better. Noh, those who need XP for some good reason are those who needed NT a few years back. That being said, XP is much better than NT, I agree.
  20. Did you install DirectX9? And this...? That would be very surprising.
  21. What the "other stuffs" are? It's very important. A small enhance application that is poorly designed can clogg the whole system. It's possible that new games are designed for XP, albeit W98 compatible. Pre-XP games and application in general should run faster on W98. If I was you I would dowload Codestuff and check what's running at start up and before you start the game. Then uncheck anything that's not necessary. Also, it's not bad re-install the drivers and applications if any of your video card.
  22. Works fine. Everything is exactely like with Ms Office except the find-and-replace in "Open Word" that is less advanced unfortunately. _______________ What does it mean:
  23. Graphix06523 What are you talking about? read the above posts about the test, then reply something serious, ok? Stability is the only serious advantage of XP. Technicaly, it's true. In practice W98 is doing it very well too. The only virus I ever had came from a floppy, a few years ago. I often run AntiV with the last update and he never find anything. Spybot and Adaware found a couple of classic spyware, nothing too dangerous. I have no experience with game. So it's good if XP is game friendly. Maybe a small +.
  24. Yes. Did you make other test? BS: All the XP I know take about the same time as W98. Because I think it's better to keep the memory allocations for all running apps.In case, you re-activate the window... I think it's even a bad idea for apps that have to work in the background while theyr window is minimized. Anyway, I never had a problem because I had too many apps or windows at the same time. That's true. If not I don't see what advantage XP would have at all. But if W98 had this problem fixed, it would be as good as XP for single users. You like XP so much because it fits perfectly for your job. But i never had the need for those advantages that you said, and most single-PC environement don't.M$ dropped W98 serie because it was cheaper to offer one OS for all. I don't think it was a good strategy. What if the 7CD game sucks and the 2 floppy one rocks? Linux is even smaller than W98 and is by far the most reliable OS ever, according to theyr users. Why? I'm very well without a firewall. It's useful only if your computer is on line unatended or 24/7 or eventualy connected to a very fast connection. It's not my case. You WinXP OS is the cause for the PC boom? You must be kidding. The real boom started with W9x. It was the concept of working with a mouse opening windows then opening little files that made computering accessible for everyone. Not XP. M$ was working years on XP, it has thousands of programers, billions of $.How they came up with this XP non sens, I don't know. We are in 2005 and they are still struggling with issues known from the beginning while a few benevolent geeks are making update for W98 at a faster pace and I'm even not talking about the Linux phenomenon. I disagree. W98 crashes but not as often as once a day. It's not because W98 crashes from time to time that it's so much worse. And W98 crashes because of the softwares you used when it does are bad. But it's possible to select only softwares that doesn't crash or leak and you never need to restart your computer. Of course XP preventing somehow bad software from crashing the system is an advantage. But developers should make good softwares in the first place.
  25. PFE is very good too. Except there isn't one thing that is very important to me whatever the app: a resizable open dialog window. And PFE is already too advanced, it's like a script/code editor. My conception is that Notepad should be a minimal app just to see text quickely and type some infos inside. PFE could play this role, if it was set by default to look like notepad (no statu bar, no tool bar etc). The best would to ask the user what kind of Notepad they want during the installation process.
