  1. I use this code XMSDSK 40960 /t /y If I remember it uses only the memory needed to store what's on the virtual disk leaving the rest of the ram free. I wonder if with this method the effect is the same...
  2. Andromeda, It's more going past minor screws-up. The goal is to back up (and restore) files which have been deleted or modified and delete files that have been added. I'm not a programmer so I'm limited to scripting and can't do much more than basicaly save files and their path and move them back later if necessary. No rocket science here. The goal is also to have something that is fast and easy. I mean somewhere between 20 seconds and one mintue (on a modern machine) for the regular snap back-up. And at the same time to back up every files (except those who won't be able to be backed up for access denied errors but these files are rare) while similar softwares usualy back up only the most important ones to save space. I think it could work as document back up as well thought the philosophy is different. Thanks to scripting, it will be easily modifiable, customizable and opensource. I don't exclude that one day it could repair a broke windows in DOS mode from a batch file. I imagine that it could be possible to do so from a files stored on a CD-r or any other external device or drive. But the first version will still require windows to operate, at least for the interface. The recovery process will be done under plain DOS thought I hope to create a possibility to fix files without restarting when restarting in DOS mode is not needed to make it even faster. I never used Gohst but as far as I know, it's copying the partition and it reformat your HD when restoring and make your drive C 'as it was". Am I right?
  3. I can't use 7zip with filelists... I'm trying other compression softwares... They must: -be free -work in plain DOS -accept filelists If you know about one, please let me know...
  4. This address worked for me (and I don't know if I'm "US user" or something else...I'm not in the US) http://us.f518.mail.yahoo.com/dc/launch?sysreq=ignore It works perfectly. Just more bloat, adds and stuffs being downloaded, but when no dowload is necessary, it's fast. I only fail to see the advantage over the old Y!Mail... "compose is tabed" and the look is slickier except that I see nothing new... It's very interresting to know that it works on w98++. It prooves that they ban w98 for no technical reason...
  5. I don't realy care of this Y!Mail beta. Y!Mail classic works just fine. The fun is to run an application that is not suppose to run on w98.
  6. Anyway to crack it or make it work with KUP?
  7. Does it affect file deletion/move done with any program (such as alternative file managers) or only inside Explorer? ...for me Explorer is like Paint: it works but the first thing you install after windows on your PC is a replacement for it.
  8. I'v downloaded 4 or 5 different zip doswares but still didn't test them. Thanks for suggesting 7z. I will try it first. Maybe "-y: assume Yes on all queries" will do the trick...
  9. I will either need the know all the files that cause lha.exe to stop or to find another archiver able to skip files on errors... I'm going to work on the second solution...
  10. I imagine that non-standard monitors also need a special graphic card or other video output device and therefore the drivers to make the whole thing work toghether. Of course the manufacturers are very carefull to forbid installations of their new crivers on w98... but that's another story...
  11. Video editing: AviUtl http://www.geocities.com/fredledingo/aviutl.htm
  12. About DVD back ups I'v been asking myself the same question today (funny he?) when poundering the purchase of a DVD writer. maybe we could ask here: http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/guides.htm A solution could looking for old or simple softwares designed when W98 was still not totaly in oblivion. For quicktime, untill someone release an unofficial codex, it might be possible to convert it to avi eventhought you cannot play it. I'm not sure but it's worth a try. I'v got several video files that wouldn't play on my w98 PC but converted succesfuly with some free addware video convertor. Thought I don't remember if it was new quicl time videos or something else. Also check if Fast Stone Player don't play them... HTH
  13. If your computer is 3 years old, the best is w98SE (+uSP2 and other patches and updates (+++)). I DO NOT recommand W98 First Edition however. The commedian above who said that you need to reboot every 1/2 an hour refered to W98FE. The w98SE+++ doesn't have these problems anymore or very rarely. XP is slow, bloat, complicated and may not accept old drivers. The advantage of XP is that newest softwares, games and hardware sometimes won't run on w98 or ME. About safety w98+++ is the safest even without firewall, if you take XP don't contemplate anything below XP SP2+recent updates+firewall+antiviruses. There is no advantage of 2000 over XP and it might be even less safe than XP SP2. ME, AFAIK, is the worse M$ OS ever. If you can get w98SE and add the free uSP2.01a and recent updates, that's the way to go. Second solution Xp SP2+updates+firewall+antiviruses+SafeXP Last solution ME or 2000.
  14. Never heard of any downfall with having lots of ram and a weak processor... IMO it should work better not worse.
  15. Thanks! now, where is PROBLEMCHYLD? I'm still waiting to read from him...
  16. Thanks Eck! I think I'v tested Second chance then unistalled it because it was for only 15 days and also, if I remember correctly it created undeletable and unmodifiable folders on my HD. While it's a good idea to protect these folders against virus attacks, it doesn't fit with my total user-control phylosophy. I don't think I will do something better. AFAICR, SC is not bad. I will only do something different. I repeat that the current test is absolutely NOT dangerous whatever you do. Even those who have Second Chance or whatever installed or who are afraid of something can test this pre-test-simualtion-release v0.0.0.0.1. It doesn't change your system. What it does is only copying your system files in compressed archives. There is nothing to be afraid of. I just would like to know if it works on other computers. Then only I will push ahead with the "recovery" part of the program.
  17. I will compare what I do with Second Chance. We will see.
  18. IMO, Programmers and manufacturers should think more in universal drivers and programs that are compatible with every OSes. This is not only a concern with w98. The danger is to live in world where the only OS is 2000/XP/Vista.
  19. It will depend on manufacturer philosiphy and the rise of alternative OSes. If manufacturer deem that everybody are or should be using XP that's the end. Now if they consider that hardware should work on whatever OS you can install (Linux, Mac and old winozes) then they may do more universal drivers that will fit all.
  20. eidenk, I admit my mistake. ... now why are they doing sys files that work like dll? Why not make a dll or an ocx? I thought sys files were text files like ini ones...
  21. oscradog, If there is a software that run dangerous script codes, this software shouldn't be installed on a PC. The problem is that M$ has integrated scripts too much in OE, IE and MS-Office. It's somehow possible to disable that but very few poeple will do it because they don't know. But are your sure that uninstalling WSH is disabling any script use? I thought WSH was only handling scripts in VBS and JS files... I think that in order to disable scripts on your computer you need to unisntal the script engines and script libraries... then most of the website you are visiting would popup errors constantly and maybe some softwares too... I always believed that IE and OE ran scripts no matter WSH is installed or not... but I can be wrong. I understand that some poeple may be afraid of using VBS file by fear of viruses. That's undeserved: professionals use VBS scripts for managing servers and networks. They are not always viruses. +Some poeple may still not have WSH 5.6 installed. +EXE files look more serious and familiar. without EXE files some poeple may just not know what to do and won't spend time reading the readme. I know that! Allas. Maybe one day I try to learn to translate VBS into VB and compile exe's. But that won't be soon. Anyway: I did these scripts for myself and for mental sport. Public recognition is not my goal but i'm happy if what I do can be usefull for one or two persons.
  22. me too. What happens if you delete vgx.dll (instead of simply unregistering it)?
  23. WSH only launches VBS and JS files that you open yourself. If a virus can lauch a VBS file outside the protection of Internet Explorer, it can do it with EXE files as well. When a VBS file or a VBScript in a web page is launched IE always gives you a warning message that the code can be dangerous. Having WSH is not more dangerous than having the possibilitiy to run EXE files on your computer. Note that I disabled scripts in MS-Office!
  24. This program will only create a few files for testing the possibilities of a future system back up program for w98. The program is already functional for backing up modified/added system files and track changes. Not to restore them but you can do that manualy if necessary. For the moment you will be testing only the 1st step: saving files which has changed since the last restore point. Please don't forget to run the test again one week later or after you installed or removed another program. It's not dangerous and it will NOT modify your system. : Link: The W98 System Restore (or Back Up) Script Project
  25. Version 2.4 released! 2.2 -Improved: Exclusion list setting -Other minor improvements 2.3 -Removed some debug informations and pop-ups -Fixed: Mistakes in file path when the script reaches the end of the list 2.4 -Fixed: Various potential errors but maybe not all! -Fixed: lists with "0 items" not appearing anymore. -Improved: Display of small block of files, now listed individualy -Imrpoved: Naming of the report files (_yymmdd_hhnnss ). Now they will list chronologicaly in Explorer New project started: The W98 System Restore (or Back Up) Script Project which is using the same comparison engine.
