My Browser Builds (Part 1)
luweitest replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Thanks for the clarification of my misunderstanding. I'll try them with my Fx52 profile and see if anything broken. -
My Browser Builds (Part 1)
luweitest replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Thanks for the input. I may switch to a Firefox 52 fork right away, but Serpent/NM/MyPal are all Palmoon based, which was forked from Firefox 24 as I read, and may not compatible with add-on I use. Is there anyone working on a Firefox 52 fork? It could incorporates important bug fixes only. -

I am using FF 52.9.1. User-agent spoof to FF64 do not work. -
My Browser Builds (Part 1)
luweitest replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
I have no Netflix account so no "login" button shown, but "Sign in" button seems OK here (Firefox 52.9.1ESR). But this reminds me of a similar problem on Github: The "Branch: master" button do not work, e.g. https://github.com/sdlpal/sdlpal In stead of expanding it only shows a grey line when clicking. I cannot remember when this begins, and maybe due to some change on the Github side. Should I uninstall any updates too? -
Thanks for all your input. This trivial (maybe) bug seems unexpectedly deep. As now the direction leads to driver issue and profound developer knowledge, I think I have digged enough as a layman. Thinkpad X61's drivers have stopped updating for years, so even if I located the buggy driver, I can do nothing about it. Seems I have to live with this. Anyway I don't use safe mode: I created two usb boot disk in case of emergency.

Instead of uninstalling video driver, I add "/BASEVIDEO" switch to boot.ini, which will make windows to use the standard VGA display driver. Still got stop message: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF76E0211, 0xF78EA700, 0xF78EA3FC)

Should not be related to kb831374, which states "This problem occurs because the Chkdsk utility may not find references to all the security IDs if the master file table is larger than 4 gigabytes (GB) or if there are more than 4,194,303 files on the volume." My C: have 100,738 files, $MFT is 138MB. vrfydsk could not run because "Shadow copy creation failed". I think maybe because I stopped Volume shadow copy service, and there's not enough space to create a copy of C drive.

I did as you said: two DIMM module, 1G each, original position A, B: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF76C0211, 0xF78E6700, 0xF78E63FC) position A, null: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF7884211, 0xF7BFE700, 0xF7BFE3FC) position null, B (slot warning during BIOS start, but can continue): 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF7934211, 0xF7CAE700, 0xF7CAE3FC) position B, null: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF7884211, 0xF7BFE700, 0xF7BFE3FC) position B, A: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF76E0211, 0xF78EA700, 0xF78EA3FC) What can those changing numbers reveal? And I ran Memtest86+ for 55 minutes, all passed without error. ATI device is never installed. The notebook's hardware is fixed. ati3duag.dll is not there at first, it is sfc.exe that complains about it and I find it in sp3.cab, extract it out to satisfy sfc.

Where could I find information about a retrieved hotfix?
luweitest replied to luweitest's topic in Windows XP
Thank you both. I didn't know there is updated RDP for XP. I have updated RDP now, but can only test it when I am back to office. -
I encountered a MS bug about remote desktop today and googled to a hotfix KB972828, but there is no result when I searched in Microsoft Update Catalog, and the KB article link is invalid either. The information I can get is from http://thehotfixshare.net/board/index.php?showtopic=13598 , "KB972828 - Files that are copied from a Windows Server 2008-based remote computer to a Windows XP SP3-based client computer by using the Remote Desktop Connection 6.1 client are corrupted". The file is signed, but I'd like to know why MS retrieved it back, if the hotfix has bug, superseded by some new fix or not. I am uncertain if I should install it.

Yes, thanks to your hint I tried to replace jp2lancher.exe, this time from 201 version, and -- Alas! It worked! Don't know why jp2lancher.exe 152 doesn't work for me yet 201 does, but anyway problem seems solved (It should not be a problem for me because I don't use jnlp at all, but I am a little compulsive perfectionist.). Seems I could safely dump 152 version. Uploaded jp2laucher 201 below. jp2launcher.exe

Firefox problem solved. I did not recall my IE and Firefox have different proxy setting. IE uses a http proxy while Firefox uses socks. Both proxy are opened by Freeproxy 4.1 on the same win7 machine. Changed Firefox to use http proxy also, and all test pages work. So I build a new socks proxy using Delegate, which works fine. So unexpectedly the culprit is Freeproxy. I have used Freeproxy for a long time without any problem, until now. Delegate is the way to go! When using java plugin, jp2launcher is also called, and it runs OK. Error occurs only when opening jnlp file. The difference is jnlp is opened by javaws.exe first, then javaws.exe calls jp2launcher. So maybe javaws.exe is the culprit, but neither file copied from 8u152 works for me. Even if I install 8u152, jnlp error persists.

Minor inconsistencies of file 0x9 is normal runing chkdsk. I run it today and still got them: Cleaning up 28 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9. Cleaning up 28 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9. Cleaning up 28 unused security descriptors. I ran sfc /scannow for three times. It prompts for CD from time to time even if CD is there. At first I thought maybe the CD is wrong and click "ignore" once, thus I ran second time. After checking the eventlog and made some change, I rebooted and ran it third time to be sure no issue remains. What sfc has done: It creates lots of old***.tmp file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache, which I think most are extracted from C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\drivers.cab, then if the file is not there, restore its original name; if the file is there, delete the tmp file at next reboot. After copied 700+ files, 3 files were logged as event: c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\40\bin\2052\fpmmcsat.dll not copied to dllcache. (There's no such file in the folder, but there is one in system32\dllcache, I copied it back.) c:\windows\system32\ati3duag.dll not copied to dllcache. (The file is not there, I find it in sp3.cab and extracted it back) c:\windows\system32\msisip.dll has wrong signature and is restored from version 4.5.6001.22159 to 3.1.4001.5512 (This file is strange. I re-installed Windows Installer 4.5 (the installer file WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe is signed) , checked msisip.dll and it's still unsigned. I think this is a MS bug), fpmmcsat.dll and ati3duag.dll may be the files that got "lost" during WinDlg repair, but they seems no important (My video adapter is Intel965, not from ATI). And consequently, BSOD still occurs in safe mode, but with slightly different number: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF76C0211, 0xF78E6700, 0xF78E63FC) The previous message: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF76E0211, 0xF78EA700, 0xF78EA3FC)

Yet another bug: jnlp file cannot open, whether they are from IE or Firefox, or open locally. I test jnlp samples from: https://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorialJWS/samples/uiswing/WallpaperProject/Wallpaper.jnlp The error message: AppName: jp2launcher.exe AppVer: 11.202.2.8 ModName: msvcr100.dll ModVer: 10.0.40219.325 Offset: 0008d6fd I downloaded the corresponding WallpaperProject.jar file, which can open normally. Command line javaws -verbose WallpaperProject.jnlp gives:

Yes, the problem occurs when exceptions have already been added. I am using Firefox 52.9.1ESR, and Tools / Add-Ons / Plugins:

Ran an extensive test and did repair as prompted. It says data in the bad sector would lost, but I do not notice anything. The new SMART info has these items changed compared to the previous: 3 Spin-Up Time 0 ms 253 253 33 0x000000000000 4 Start/Stop Count 12,011 93 93 0 0x000000002EEB 9 Power-On Hours (POH) 1335d 20h 27 27 0 0x000000007D3C 12 Power Cycle Count 10,217 94 94 0 0x0000000027E9 193 Load Cycle Count 986,022 2 2 0 0x0000000F0BA6 194 Temperature 38 °C 144 144 0 0x000000000026 197 Current Pending Sector Count 0 100 100 0 0x000000000000 Seems Pending Sector issue is fixed. FF 52 has removed java support. Although ESR version is said to work, yet after importing the two reg file, https://www.java.com/en/download/installed8.jsp?detect=jre still do not work here (applet loaded, but "cannot verify certificate" error), nor any test pages work (security white list have been added): https://www.csie.ntu.edu.tw/~lyuu/Capitals/javatst.htm (ClassNotFoundException) http://www.stat.cmu.edu/~hseltman/javatest/ (NullPointerException) ...etc. But IE8 works for all of them. Does Firefox need some other configuration?
-
The driver or service loaded in safe mode should be in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal] , which I pasted in previous post, yet I don't know if there's anything unusual.

Yes I suspected disk failure at first and did chkdsk for couple of times. Apart from some long-standing bad sectors in the disk, no significant errors found. To get rid of JRE 1.8.0_152 install file, I compared the registry, made a reg file as attachment, and got 1.8.0_202 running without install 152 first. I tested https://www.java.com/en/download/installed8.jsp with IE8, it works. But... Is there any web page that still needs java to function? And now only IE8 on XP can run java. I recall using a college VPN with java, yet it was long ago. Now I only need java for Davmail. JRE 1.8.reg

Another two tries even left no ntbtlog.txt.

I recall that step-by-step option in Win98 era. XP removed it. I managed to get a bootlog of safe mode by adding a line to boot.ini: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="boot troubleshoot (safe mode)" /safeboot:minimal(alternateshell) /sos /bootlog /noguiboot /noexecute=optout /fastdetect After BSOD, the ntbtlog.txt has only one line: Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\drivers\kmixer.sys I wonder why those drivers before kmixer.sys haven't been logged. And I got a list of drivers|services in safe mode: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\AppMgmt] @="Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\Base] @="Driver Group" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\Boot Bus Extender] @="Driver Group" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\Boot file system] @="Driver Group" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\CryptSvc] @="Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\DcomLaunch] @="Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\dmadmin] @="Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\dmboot.sys] @="Driver" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\dmio.sys] @="Driver" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\dmload.sys] @="Driver" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\dmserver] @="Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\EventLog] @="Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\File system] @="Driver Group" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\Filter] @="Driver Group" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\HelpSvc] @="Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\Netlogon] @="Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\PCI Configuration] @="Driver Group" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\PlugPlay] @="Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\PNP Filter] @="Driver Group" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\Primary disk] @="Driver Group" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\RpcSs] @="Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\SCSI Class] @="Driver Group" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\sermouse.sys] @="Driver" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\sr.sys] @="FSFilter System Recovery" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\SRService] @="Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\System Bus Extender] @="Driver Group" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\vga.sys] @="Driver" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\vgasave.sys] @="Driver" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\WinMgmt] @="Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\WudfPf] @="Driver" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\WudfRd] @="Driver" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\WudfSvc] @="Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}] @="Universal Serial Bus controllers" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}] @="CD-ROM Drive" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}] @="DiskDrive" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{4D36E969-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}] @="Standard floppy disk controller" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}] @="Hdc" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{4D36E96B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}] @="Keyboard" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}] @="Mouse" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{4D36E977-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}] @="PCMCIA Adapters" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{4D36E97B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}] @="SCSIAdapter" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{4D36E97D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}] @="System" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{4D36E980-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}] @="Floppy disk drive" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}] @="Volume" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{745A17A0-74D3-11D0-B6FE-00A0C90F57DA}] @="Human Interface Devices" Is there anything unusual in the list? Tool to identify problematic service at log on?
luweitest replied to shorterxp's topic in Windows XP
I had the same problem before. Analyzing with Bootvis, there's driver delay related to *smb*, so I deleted all desktop link to remote directories (like \\host\folder\), it gets quicker, but not enough until I totally changed "workstation" service to "manual" ("computer browser" and "tcp/ip Netbios helper" have already changed to "manual" before). That reduces boot time to 30s or so, and no stuck after showing the desktop anymore. The side effect is, if you need to visit remote folders afterwards, you should run "workstation" service manually. -

\SystemRoot\system32\drivers\kmixer.sys --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I checked all 11 "did not load" driver file, all of them are signed, so files are good. And some are special: ndproxy is loaded first, then not loaded; kbdhid is not loaded first, then loaded; ip6fw is not loaded first, then loaded, then not loaded again. Could that reveal something?
