  1. Hi USP 5.0 SR1 contains all security updates, including the IE501/OE55/DX7 updates. WUv6 checks if an update is applicable by actually comparing file version numbers on your system files against those in the update. WUv4 wasn't nearly as sophisticated - it only checked the registry. I think that's what AP does too, but the AP guys really ought to do it the way WUv6 does. I'd be happy to help them DX9, IE6, etc are not yet in my USP's - so you might want AP to install those. /G B)
  2. Hi Microsoft platforms are usually supported for much longer by ISV's than they are supported by Microsoft. I know a company which only last year discontinued support for NT 3.x and Windows 95. Another huge (!!) company I know of upgraded (?) from OS/2 to NT 4 just two years ago. But home users are the real losers in this game - we often upgrade simply to get rid of "all the bugs". But personally I've paid good money for my Windows 2000 licenses, and this time I've chosen not to give in that easily. /G B)
  3. Hi @MajorGeeks and @SoftPedia: Yep - I'll send you a description in a PM. I'm rather surprised by the amount of dl's btw - but a lot of people have passed by from other forums I've learned. I wouldn't be able to fix all the SP4 bugs in a delta package, it would not be able to integrate as efficiently as the USP's, installation would leave less disk space available, integrated installs would be larger, and the overall quality would suffer. Also it would matter in which order those packages were applied, and some files (txtsetup.inf, dosnet.inf, hivesft.inf, hivecls.inf, setupreg.hiv etc. etc. which already exists in five versions - one for each W2k flavour) would become hard if not impossible to update correctly using normal .inf technology. Also it would delay further releases at least by a month or so. Sry - but I think you are all better off with the cumulative versions, where I've had the chance to test it thoroughly, verify each and every registry setting, each and every file, etc etc - because I actually do that. Best regards, Gurgelmeyer B)
  4. Hi @RyanVM - Yep @war59312 + @the_guy - Sounds like a good idea to make a FAQ @erpdude8 - The first USP 5.0 "Gold" contained version 1 and several post-MSURP1 hotfixes for this because version 2 wasn't available at the time of release. USP 5.0 SR-1 includes version 2 and several post-MSURP1 and post-MSURP1v2 hotfixes. Best regards Gurgelmeyer B)
  5. @Seppl - Yes - it's final. The build number is at the bottom of the autorun.htm file - USP 5.01 build 11-2005-10-17 (service release 1) @Alexander Maxim - you're right, I did't Had some personal stuff to take care of I'm a bit surprised - >1600 dl's in a day or so - wow! Btw, the description should say 403 hotfixes rather than 168 hotfixes.
  6. Hi By splitting the USP I'd have to do much more testing. I'd much rather release future USP's side by side in a crosslinked ISO image - but it's not as easy as it sounds. (I could even release my personal edition then ) But I'll consider it carefully - atm I'm committed to USP 5.1 Best regards, Gurgelmeyer B)
  7. Hi First of all, the MS URP1 IS in fact included in the USPs. So are the fixes for the problems that it introduces. However, Microsoft chose to add a new kernel mode (!!) driver to W2K in the MS URP1. This file system filter driver has never been part on W2K in the first place. Its main purpose is to intercept file access on behalf of DRM systems, although it can be (ab)used for just about any purpose. My opinion is, that introducing a new kernel mode driver less than 3 DAYS before mainstream support is ended is a very bad idea, so I've chosen not to include it in the USPs. WUv6 detects that this filter driver is not present on your system, and that is exactly why MS URP1 shows up. I've deliberately chosen not to attempt to suppress the MSURP1 on WU, because I think you should have the option to install this filter driver if you want it. Hope that explains stuff - maybe I'll include it in USP 5.1 and just leave it disabled by default - donno. G B)
  8. @war59312 - upload done. I'll get in touch with the softpedia guys right away - thanks for mailing them Best regards, Gurgelmeyer B)
  9. Thanks Yep - it's pretty hard to "release" stuff without a place to ul - but I have a few ideas
  10. Hi Technically it is possible to make a non-cumulative service pack, which would require SP4. Maybe I should look into that again Best regards, Gurgelmeyer :B
  11. Hi This is just a quick overview of the USP's The USP's are all fully cumulative, which means that they contain everything from Service Pack 4. USP 5.0 USP 5.0 contains all hotfixes for Windows (all that I know of) and for the built in versions of IE/OE/DX etc. - USP 5.0 Gold (build 10) - released; contains ~350 hotfixes and security fixes - USP 5.0 SR-1 (build 11) - released; contains >400 hotfixes and security fixes; corrects several registry bugs from SP4 - USP 5.02.2195.16a RETRO ("Gurgels Own") - released; contains more than >50 additional hotfixes and all security updates; DOS setup is fixed. Since this is my personal edition I've removed AU and SPAD, and added >127 GB IDE drives from text mode setup and onwards, because this is safe. Up to date as of 1/1 2006 with security fixes (quality assurance!), and 4/1 2006 with hotfixes. Planned No further releases of USP 5.0 are planned. USP 5.1 USP 5.1 contains everything from USP 5.0 and furthermore it includes IE6/OE6/WAB6/SE56/MSI31/BITS2 and all hotfixes and security updates for those too. It also supports >127 GB IDE drives from text mode setup and onwards. - USP 5.1 (build 18) - released - USP 5.10.2195.21 - released; contains more than >50 additional hotfixes and all security updates; DOS setup is fixed. Includes April 06 Updates btw. Planned No further releases of USP 5.1 are planned. USP 5.2 Planned USP 5.2 will contain everything from USP 5.1 and furthermore it will include NET11 + NET20 + DX9c + MDX9c + MDAC28SP1 and all hotfixes and security updates for for those of course. USP 5.5 / USP Extreme Ed USP 5.5 / USP Extreme will contain everything from USP 5.2 and furthermore just about everything which is available for W2k at no charge from microsoft.com, including RDPClient, IE tools, TweakUI, MSConfig, Messenger etc. etc. Most of these extras will be optional components. (And Messenger will be detached from MS OE by default!) Furthermore it will contain a control panel applet named "System Options" which will allow you to enable/disable most of the known registry tweaks - and a few new ones I'm considering support for SATA storage, updated chipset .INFs, and Universal High Definition Audio (KB888111). Updated MS components (various MS*.OCX/.DLL's) would be nice too, and the standard Codec drivers. No third party applications/tools/executables are planned for the USPs - only exception might be this - the USP Extreme. Notes PLEASE NOTICE that the former "USP Version 5.1 Basic Edition" project has been renamed to just "USP 5.1" - the former "USP Version 5.1 Standard Edition" project has been renamed to just "USP 5.2" - and finally the "USP Version 5.1 Extreme Edition" is now named "USP 5.5" or "USP Extreme". About MSJVM3810, I'll wrap this up as a hotfix when I get the time. Gurgelmeyer B) THANKS TO Allow me to thank the following - Will for hosting my work on www.willsdownloads.com - MajorGeeks for hosting/mirroring my work - SoftPedia for hosting/mirroring my work - YouKnowWhoYouAre for providing hotfixes - YouKnowWhoYouAreToo for providing hotfixes - YouAlsoKnowWhoYouAre for providing hotfixes - And last but not least Microsoft Corporation for making Windows 2000 - it's the best money I ever spent YOU GUYS ROCK
  12. Hi everyone - I know now Thanks to xper for creating this forum - the original thread seemed awfully long, so this will make things a lot easier to keep track of. I've spent three entire days bugfixing the DTC / COM+ update 902400 so no one will experience any of the problems mentioned in KB909444 when installing USP 5 SR-1. Apart from the security issue this particular security update fixes tons of other bugs because it replaces the Post-SP4 COM+ Update Rollups 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, and 34 - none of which are available for direct download btw. USP 5.0 contained the latest at the time, which was 34. Furthermore I've corrected an old bug which somtimes caused Setup to spontaneously reboot the computer when installing DTC (used to happen to me all the time - quite annoying actually). I'd like to apologize to anyone who has tried to send me PM's - my inbox is FULL (I'll empty it now of course) About torrents - I'm an absolute noob when it comes to file sharing. I'd much prefer just to upload it somewhere and let someone do what's necessary to actually share it (I'm paying per byte too). Please feel free to consider it shareware and upload/share it as you like. I don't mind Right now I'm looking for a place to upload USP 5.0 SR-1 ---- anyone? Best regards Gurgelmeyer B)
  13. Hi Just added the latest security updates to version 5.0 SR-1 - still got one minor issue to sort out though. Server editions are very much supported in USP 5.0 btw. Almost one third of all hotfixes are server-only hotfixes. USP 5.0 is in fact running on quite a few servers out there (and has solved quite a few problems I'm told ). The number of distinct hotfixes in USP 5.0 SR-1 is now >400, which means that roughly 7-800 problems will be solved with this release. I won't brand USP 5.0 SR-1. And I'm not even sure I should brand USP 5.1 - except maybe the Extreme Edition. I love your artwork btw. B) About setting the SP version no. to 5 - this is absolutely no problem. It can be set to 4a, 5, 5a, 5b, 7q - it is even possible to add a build number. But MS has promised to release security updates on WU till 2010, so I'd rather not break the WU compatibility
  14. Hi everyone, Well - I guess I'll release "USP 5.1 PREVIEW" soon then - saves me a lot of work only to support /integrate in the preview version. (Preview does sound better than beta doesn't it?) @Daemonforce - Yep, DX9c is actually recommended for W2k by MS because it is "safer" @dirtwarrior - I guess I could add a little bmp somewhere - would anyone mind? Feeling better but I still have to stay in bed my girlfriend tells me. Best regards Gurgelmeyer
  15. Sneeked out of bed (don't tell my girlfriend, plz) @fdv - Thanks (door is open ) . I've heard an unsubstantiated rumour that something will be done about the CPU HALT problem - but I'm trying to get some more info. @dirtwarrior - Yes, the image is smaller with USP 5 because all unreferenced drivers have been removed from the driver.cab file. I guess what most of you are looking forward to is USP 5.1 - so I'll probably release a beta soon. It will only be beta in the sense that ONLY integrated install is offered (but you can live with that, can't you? ) Best regards Gurgelmeyer
  16. Hi - still got a fever - but staying in bed is too boring @dirtwarrior - the NTKRPAMP and NTKRNLMP are for the multiprocessor HAL's and P4 HT. Unlike XP/2k3, W2k sees a HT CPU as two CPU's if HT is enabled. The NTKRNLPA and NTOSKRNL are for singleprocessor HAL's. (These files are not the HAL's - but they implement some OS functionality which depends on the HAL). The NTKRPAMP and NTKRNLPA are for ACPI HAL's, and the NTKRNLMP and NTOSKRNL are for non-ACPI HAL's. To complicate things a bit further, the installed SYSTEM32\NTKRNLPA.EXE is a copy of either NTKRPAMP (multiprocessor acpi) or NTKRNLPA (uniprocessor acpi), and the installed SYSTEM32\NTOSKRNL.EXE is a copy of either NTKRNLMP (multiprocessor non-acpi) or NTOSKRNL (uniprocessor non-acpi). Hope that clears it up. Anyway, found out what caused the NTFS permission problem: me . I had made a minor typo in the winnt.sif that I use for testing, which caused setup to trash it's own memory and - as a side effect - not properly set the permissions. Fragile stuff - be very sure that you got everything 1000% correct if you ever configure your network settings from winnt.sif!! Best regards, Gurgelmeyer B) PS - I'm planning to release USP 5.1 BETA 1 (not quite done) and USP 5.0 SR-1 (completely done) when I get better. I'm hoping to the last minute that a fix for the CPU HALT problem emerges, which is why I haven't released USP 5.0 SR-1 yet (but I really have finished it ).
  17. @dirtwarrior - Thanks. I'd love to help you when I feel better - it's a cool project you started
  18. Thanks, guys I'm still not well so I guess it's back to bed soon, however I did finish the USP 5.0 SR1 last night. I then tested some SP4 and USP5 integrated installs on NTFS (which I dont use very often). The SP4 default file permissions are all wrong or inadequate - I'm chocked! Had to use cacls to even make ARP work for the built in system components!! Should I attempt do something about it? Best regards G B) Edit: might not be as bad as I thought - sorry, MS - I should get some rest and clear my mind
  19. Hi - don't worry - I'm just behind schedule as usual USP 5.0 SR-1 now has all August and September hotfixes plus a few rebuilt ones, and a few very old ones that I'd missed completely - a total of >40 new fixes! I finally got so fed up with .msi files that I decided to read everything I could find about them - now I'm extending my service pack builder so it updates MSI embedded media streams and all file version tables. Hope to finish it today - I've been doing nothing else for a week or two now, but now I actually understand MSI's. Also I fixed some registry bugs in HIVECLS.INF, which caused the Active Directory typelib not to register properly or not to register at all during setup. MS even repeated this bug in SP4 and URP1. But it's fixed now. My messenger is FULL - I should sign in more often, but the MSI thing took all my time lately - plus I've been sick for some time too. Nothing serious - just annoying. Best regards Gurgelmeyer B)
  20. Upgrading from Me is not supported - Me was released after w2k, remember
  21. I believe these are the most recent ones: Date Version Size File name ------------------------------------------------- 01-Jun-2004 32,543 USB.INF 10-Jan-2005 5.0.2195.7019 69,328 USBAUDIO.SYS 07-Dec-2004 5.0.2195.7008 20,752 USBD.SYS 12-Dec-2003 5.0.2195.6882 19,792 USBEHCI.SYS 02-Dec-2004 5.0.2195.7006 40,560 USBHUB.SYS 16-Jan-2004 5.0.2195.6891 50,032 USBHUB20.SYS 02-Aug-2004 5.0.2195.6824 12,560 USBMON.DLL 14-May-2004 5.0.2195.6926 139,088 USBPORT.SYS 17-Aug-2004 5.0.2195.6968 22,832 USBPRINT.SYS 02-Dec-2004 5.0.2195.7006 22,768 USBSER.SYS 27-May-2004 5.0.2195.6934 23,312 USBSTOR.SYS They are in my USP5
  22. Not really - but there are plenty of hotfixes mentioned on microsoft.com My usp 5 contains the latest usb 2.0 drivers
  23. No :-/ but I wonder where pqmagic gets that information - maybe it just reads boot.ini and looks for the word "Server"?
  24. Nope I'll have to corret myself btw - the 5.1 specific entry points are now documented, and they are meant for code manifests - not necessarily WPA. Gurgelmeyer B)
