  1. BitTorrents doesn't require a tracker, making it decentralized, depending on the client used, like Azureus. So your idea already exists, but no one seems to be using decentralized tracking for some reason.
  2. Thanks but according to Nvidia's site, the Forceware release 75 and up drivers don't support the TNT2 chipset. Forceware 71.89 is the latest that supports TNT2. http://www.nvidia.com/object/78.01_winxp_32_supported.html scroll down EDIT: I have installed the 71.89 drivers as stated in this thread and applied the reg entries, then rebooted. Everything seems to be fine, but I'm going to install a game to make sure cause that's where the screw ups always showed up before. Also, the reg tweak is for WinMCE, not XP. Is there an XP specific tweak? HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Display Settings This entry does not exist in the XP registry, so I created it. EDIT: Installed a game (red faction) and get random crashes in the options menu. Can't even get into the game proper. Guess this trick doesn't work after all.
  3. Could you be a little more specific regarding the drivers? When trying to get the onboard TNT2 working in XP, should I use the 56.xx Detonator drivers for XP or Win98?
  4. I have an older computer with onboard Riva TNT2 graphics. I've searched high and low for WinXP drivers for it, but they simply do not exist. DirectX 8.1 works fine with TNT2 on Win98se, but I wouldn't know about DirectX 9.0c
  5. Removing DRM from protected audio You'll need Windows Media Player, Deamon Tools or other virtual drive app and the Nero Fast Burning plugin http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/index.php http://www.wmplugins.com Open the protected track (or tracks) in WMP, choose "Copy to a CD or Device", check the tracks you want to copy and in the pulldown below "Items on device" on the top right, select "Nero fast CD-Burning plug-in", click "Copy" in the top right, this will bring up the Nero interface, where it say's "Current Recorder" select "Image Recorder" then burn. Now mount your newly created image. You'll see that you have a normal Audio CD mounted, from which you can rip the tracks to whatever format you want without having to worry about DRM. This results in no loss of sound quality which you will no doubt get if you play your protected tracks and capture the audio with various recording apps. The above works with WMP 9, I haven't tried it on WMP 10.
  6. I tried the new Nero 7 Premium and it is a cd image with multilanguage support built in. It also has loads of other crap that no one in their right mind would ever use, like a "media center" which includes a non-working app for tv tuner cards, a video player, video editor, some photo thing, a voip app and other stuff which I didn't even bother looking at. The interface is not only ugly, but clumsy as well. Basically, it's the same old Nero with a new interface slapped on. You can change more settings in this version, which is basically useless, and all that's gonna do is cause n00bs to screw things up more. After 20 minutes of trying it out, I uninstalled and deleted it, then reinstalled 6.6.0.16. I think it may be a beta, because even though the only language I had installed was english, the uninstaller was partially in german. Here's some shots: http://www.winfuture.de/news,22134.html http://www.winfuture.de/index.php?page=wfv4/BSv2/scg-ia.php&id=1294&seite=1
  7. I've tried both of the above mentioned packs on 3 different computers all running clean installs of XP Pro, plus I've tried them both in Virtual PC. Both packs failed to install in every case. Your previous packs work fine on those same 3 computers and Virtual PC, so it's got to be something wrong with those new packs. And as far as not being able to figure out your 1.2.2 update pack, I had been up for well over 24 hours working on several computers so I wasn't exactly thinking or seeing clearly at the time.
  8. RyanVM's latest SunJava and .NET silent install packs don't work at all, whether installing them manually or putting them in an unattended setup. Both of them start out fine with the little window that says its "gathering required info" or something like that, and they both get about half way through that then they just sit there doing nothing. I waited nearly 10 minutes for them both to continue, but no such luck. Had to kill the tasks to get rid of them. Unless you really want to save 5 megs, just use the original .exe from Sun and the silent switches built into it. Works great. As for .NET, I use RyanVM's last version that just has the SP1 integrated and then silently install the hotfix afterwards from RunOnceEx.cmd.
  9. I've been fruitlessly searching this forum for hours for info on how to slipsteam the 1.2.2 update pack. The update pack is a .cab file but nLite needs an .exe, so how do I slip this thing? Obviously, I've never used RyanVM's packs before, so any clues would be appreciated. And please don't tell me to look on RyanVM's forum. I already have and there's nothing useful there. Also, how do remove all the Extras and Regtweaks from 1.2.2lite ? Update: OK i found my mistake in using nLite to slip the 1.2.2 pack. I was selecting the service pack button instead of the hotfix button. So that problem is solved. Oddly enough I found that answer on RyanVM's site after hours of searching. I still need to remove stuff from the update pack though. It's like 4am now so I should probably hold off for another day. I can't think straight now.
  10. It's a real pain in the neck to have to edit a 7zip file with reshack, do some scripting, and write some .cmd files just to make a silent installer, when the ability is already built into Winrar. I mean who really cares about a few kb or a few megs? Doesn't anyone use a dvd-rw for their unattended? Is there a reason for using 7zip over Winrar other than allegedly smaller installer size? I say "allegedly" cause I made 2 silent installers for Quicktime Alternative, 1 with 7zip and 1 with Winrar. The difference in size was a matter of a few kb, and it was alot easier and faster to make the Winrar silent installer.
  11. Can you give me a link to the right page on their website (www.ali.com.tw)? Because I can't find it... Really sucky AND slow site... http://www.pcchips.com.tw/pccweb/index.aspx?MenuID=0&LanID=0 There's dozens and dozens of ALi drivers here.
  12. Any plans to add ALi onboard video drivers? PC Chips uses them extensively, and I'm sure other manufacturer's do as well.
  13. Any plans for a chipset driverpack ? I tried to put one together recently, but it seems there's more chipset drivers than I care to count. I think the Intel chipset drivers are all the same, but I don't know how to compare the .zip files from Intel's site to make sure. Not to mention all the other chipset brands out there. I also tried to do a graphics driverpack, but it's the same situation. Too many different onboard gpus to count. I guess a good start would be to put together a list of all current chipsets and onboard gpus, if that's even possible. I don't know where to start.
  14. No need. My system is tight as a virgin according to several online security test sites like grc.com. I'm behind a wired NAT-equipped router and running Norton Internet Security 2005, Ad-Aware/Ad-Watch SE 1.05 Pro, Spybot/TeaTimer, Firefox and Thunderbird. Plus, universal plug 'n play, dcom, windows autoupdate and a couple other nasty security holes and certain ports have been disabled. I don't have any problems with any sort of online threats. There's no other reason for updating windows besides online security, and I got that under control without Microsoft's help. I tried sp2 when it first came out and it caused nothing but problems with some games and cd/dvd copy apps, networking, and online security with sp2 is still a big joke. I have personally watched while IE was being hijacked out of the blue on a fully updated sp2 system on my network. Toolbars and spyware were installed as I watched and the really sad part is that IE was open but no pages had been opened yet. The comp in question was also running norton internet security 2004 but since it's not my comp, it's security wasn't nearly as tight as my comp is. So I ask you this: Why should I update XP beyond sp1 and the handful of hotfixes I use? Give me 1 good reason.
  15. I have disabled auto updates, and I will never update xp again as long as sp2 exists, so I don't really care if MS does release a kernel update. And even if they did and for some reason I was forced to upgrade to the new kernel, it only takes 5 minutes to export/import the necessary resources from my old kernel to the new one with ResHacker. So it's no big deal to me either way.
  16. I don't use sp2 so I wouldn't know about 4 different copies of the kernel, I just know that the way I have done it works fine.
  17. My code works just fine, thank you very much. I got the 0x00000000 value from my registry, so I know it's correct. And as far as using %systemroot% versus hardcoding the drive letter, I have never installed an operating system on any drive other than c: and I never will, so it doesn't really matter.
  18. Don't think so. Windows will lock up during install at the bootscreen everytime if you replace the original ntoskrnl.exe file on the cd. Not sure why it works when you manually replace the same file in safemode on a finished install , though.
  19. Maximum PC is a good magazine but be careful using their tweaks and advice. Always test on another maching or in virtual pc/vmware if you can. Sometime last year they published a tell-all guide to the group policy manager and told what every service is, and what it does. Then they said which ones didn't need to be ran at all. Well, I followed their guide and XP Pro promptly quit working right. A few days later I had to do a clean install to fix everything. Then I wrote them a nasty email about it, and never got a response. In fact, if you search the net a bit for a particular registry tweak, you may notice difference sources giving different info. Best thing to do, is run a clean install in virtual pc and use something like RegShot to monitor changes to the registry so you can see for yourself exactly what keys and values are being changed.
  20. I have about 100 themes/visual styles packed in a sfx .rar that is set to silently unpack to %windir%\recources\themes. In my winnt.sif file i have placed the following: [Shell] CustomDefaultThemeFile = "%WinDir%\Resources\Themes\royale.theme" Then in my hivedef.inf file, which is one of 5 files the registry is built from during install, I have the following: ; Set Default Theme All Users HKCU,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes","InstallTheme","c:\windows\Resources\Themes\royale.theme" HKCU,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes","InstallVisualStyle","c:\windows\Resources\Themes\royale\royale.msstyles" I have tried just the winnt.sif entry by itself and I have tried the reg entries by themselves, but neither worked, until I used both at the same time. This causes the theme or visual style of my choosing to be the default on install for all users. Works great.
  21. Editing several files to get a custom bootscreen installed is not needed. Just edit ntoskrnl.exe then rename it to OEMkrnl.exe and place the file in $OEM$\$$\System32. This way the file will be copied over to %windir%\system32 during install. Then in your RunOnceEx.cmd file at the end just before the final reboot, place the follow lines edited for your situation: REG ADD %KEY%\028 /VE /D "Custom Bootscreen" /f REG ADD %KEY%\028 /V 1 /D "cmd /c bootcfg.exe /RAW /A /Kernel=OEMKrnl.exe /ID 1" /f REG ADD %KEY%\028 /V 2 /D "cmd /c bootcfg.exe /Timeout 0" /f This edits the boot.ini file so windows will use your modified kernel file. Using this method, you will not see your custom bootscreen until the final reboot. This method works fine for xp home and pro, sp1 and sp2, any combination. Just in case you didn't know, you should use ntoskrnl.exe from the same install it's going to be used on, for example: if you are installing xp home with sp2 integrated, then you need to use the file from that. A sp2 kernel may not work on a sp1 install and I know for a fact that a xp pro\sp1 kernel will lock up a xp home\sp2 comp real quick. Don't know where buletov got his info but it's dead wrong. My info came from this forum and my own experience. I don't know why, but you can't just replace ntoskrnl.exe with an edited copy cause windows will lock up everytime during install. BTW, hyperthreading has absolutely NOTHING to do with a custom bootscreen not working. HT is strictly processor based, not software.
  22. Finally got my regtweaks to work for all users plus admin but only by editing the hive*.inf files. works great.
  23. I manually applied my regtweaks to the registry key HKEY_USERS\TWEAKS at the cmd prompt, then created a new acct, logged off, then logged onto the new acct. Some of the settings apply to the new acct but most don't. It doesn't seem to work at all doing it from cmdlines.txt at T-12. Even tried rebooting before logging onto the new acct. Still the same.
