  1. I am also leaning toward BC. They seem like a nice community, and the website layout is similar to that of the classic MSFN layout, which I like. However, as others have pointed out, it's no MSFN, but no other forum is. I was also considering Ryanvm, but the activity there seems pretty low. I was actually friends with Ryan back when the Vistax64 forums incident occurred, so I can back up his claims. I'm not trying to personally insult anyone there or damage the reputation of Vistax64 (the forum is filled with very useful information, and the majority of members there are friendly and knowledgeable), but the way Ryan was treated there back then was quite odd. This occurred sometime in 2013 IIRC so maybe their rules/policies have changed since then, but the forum seems to be more well-suited for "Average Joe" kind of users seeking solutions to basic problems, rather than more advanced and in-depth topics that would attract more experienced/enthusiast members. As Ruan pointed out, they don't seem to have a problem with the Windows Server 2008 updates on Vista thread over at BC, so this is a good indicator that they're a little more friendly toward users of our kind. I will wait until Aug. 12 before moving my main topic (Last versions of software for Vista) over there however, just in case MSFN can remain online for some reason.
  2. In light of today's announcement of MSFN potentially shutting down for good, I will be searching for an alternative forum to post this list. Although I believe no forum will match MSFN for various reasons, I believe this is the best course of action in order to preserve the information gathered here for the public to view, and also to allow it to continue growing. I will announce my decision here on this thread when I've come to one. Right now I'm considering BleepingComputer and Ryanvm, but I haven't really dug into each one to decide what would be best yet. Thanks to everyone for all the submissions and support for the list over the past year and a half; I hope to see you all at the new thread location for the list (wherever that happens to be)...
  3. As a user of one of, if not the most maligned version of Windows on the planet, this devastates me. If this really is the end, we can only hope that there's an alternative forum that even comes close to the amount of respect, tolerance, and professionalism that I really admire and appreciate about MSFN. Sure, not everyone here can agree on everything (as with every forum), but asserting your opinion in a disrespectful manner just isn't tolerated here, and that is one of the best traits of this forum that I haven't really seen elsewhere. There is also an insurmountable library of information here that is completely unmatched by any other forum, and I hope we're able to salvage at least most of it. I've already backed up my Last versions of software for Windows Vista/2008 list to a Word document (external links intact), with the intention to post it on an alternative forum if/when MSFN goes offline, and it has been backed up to WayBack machine as well (kudos to @11ryanc for doing this for me). The question is... what forum won't blast me for using Windows Vista, without shoving Windows 10 in my face? R.I.P. MSFN...
  4. This is somewhat off topic, but since my motherboard died on me after getting damaged in a power surge, I decided to invest in higher-end Ivy Bridge hardware so I could run a wider range of operating systems, namely Vista. After rebuilding the machine, I installed Vista and have decided to use it as my main OS once again, for the first time since 2015. There are no weird startup errors or failed services as I experienced with running the OS on Haswell-based hardware. As such, I'll be able to test software natively (instead of using VMware), so hopefully everyone's submissions to the list will be added more quickly from now on. If you ask me, those seeking to run Vista on semi-modern hardware (natively) should consider investing in Sandy or Ivy Bridge - they're simply less troublesome to deal with when running Vista, and (Vista) driver support is definitely superior. The symptoms experienced when running Vista on Haswell+ are just extremely annoying to deal with, and there's really no way to work around them unless you don't mind having to reboot several times to get a stable session of the OS going, or if you just don't reboot that often. I still am stumped as to what causes this bug, and why only Vista is affected, but I've pretty much accepted that it's never going to get fixed and that using older (not necessarily inferior) hardware is going to be the best way to go at this point. Anyway, getting back on topic: since the sum of changes for Aug. 8 is so small, I'll simply consolidate it with this post: SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR AUGUST 8, 2017: Added Microsoft Mathematics Add-In for Word and OneNote to "Additional Microsoft software" section. Added Logmein Hamachi to (ONG) "VPN Clients" section.
  5. I'm not sure... I'll probably give it a couple more months or so, and if no obvious progress has been made by then, I'll ask on the thread I made a couple of months ago regarding Waterfox 54 compatibility.
  6. SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR AUGUST 1, 2017: Updated Logitech Gaming Software entry to v8.94.108 Added VRS Recording System to (ONG) "Audio creation/editing tools" section. Added Doxillion File Converter to (ONG) "File management" section. Added Fling FTP to (ONG) "FTP clients" section. Added a new (ONG) section: "Invoicing, finance, and business management". Added ClickCharts Diagram & Flowchart, Copper Point of Sales, Express Accounts, Express Invoice, FlexiServer Productivity & Attendance, Inventoria Inventory, MoneyLine Personal Finance, and Reflect CRM Customer Database to (ONG) "Invoicing, finance, and business management" section. Added a new (ONG) section: "Speech Recognition software". Added Express Dictate Digital Dictation to (ONG) "Speech Recognition software" section. Added Orion File Recovery to (ONG) "System management, cleanup, and analysis" section.
  7. I mentioned this in the July 13, 2017 sum of changes. I decided to remove them because I found them irrelevant and unnecessary. Most people viewing this list more than likely want to see if their favorite software still supports Vista, or if it doesn't, they probably want to know the final version that does. Like I said before, I don't want this list to be a vehicle for Microsoft's OS lifecycle policy. Thanks for the information about Logitech Gaming Software, I will update the list to reflect that.
  8. SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR JULY 31, 2017: Renamed (ONG) "Video/photo editing software" section to "Video/photo editing tools" to better describe what is contained within the section. Renamed (ONG) "Audio editing software" section to "Audio creation/editing tools" to better describe what is contained within the section. This change also helps to accommodate a wider range of software pertaining to that genre. Renamed (ONG) "Disc burning or mounting software" section to "Optical disc media management software" to better describe what is contained within the section. This change also helps to accommodate a wider range of software pertaining to that genre. Added DAEMON Tools Pro v7.0 to "Misc. Software Utilities" section. Added PowerDVD 15 to "Multimedia" section. Added AnyDVD HD, DVDFab, Express Burn, Express Rip, Golden Records, and UltraISO to (ONG) "Optical disc media management software" section. Added CardWorks Business Card Designer, Disketch Disc Label Software, DrawPad Graphic Editor, PhotoPad, PhotoStage, and Pixillion to (ONG) "Video/photo editing tools" section. Added Crescendo, MixPad, PitchPerfect, RecordPad, SoundTap, Switch, Voxal, WavePad, and Zulu to (ONG) "Audio creation/editing tools" section. Added DreamPlan Home Design, MeshMagic, and Spin 3D Mesh Converter to (ONG) "2D/3D Modeling software" section. Added important information regarding the future of OneDrive support. Support for Windows Vista and Server 2008 ends on November 1, 2017. This is confirmed by a member of the OneDrive team here. Rearranged some existing misalphabetized items.
  9. SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR JULY 20, 2017: Added Universal Theme Patcher & Vista Visual Master to "Desktop Enhancement software" section. Added link to a new video tutorial on how to resolve Windows Update's slow 'Check for updates' speed in Windows Vista (created by myself). Rearranged some misalphabetized items in various sections.
  10. Thanks for the addition and information. Added Universal Theme Patcher & Vista Visual Master to "Desktop Enhancement software" section.
  11. I was able to install the July 2017 Monthly Rollup with no problems on my Windows 8 system: http://prntscr.com/fvhkrn As such, this issue seems to be exclusive to your system, Jody... At least we know that Microsoft didn't do anything (whether it be intentional or unintentional) to cause any future Server 2012 updates to fail to install in Windows 8.
  12. SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR JULY 13, 2017: Removed "End of life" information as I found that unnecessary and not compatible with the title of this topic. I don't want this list to be a vehicle for Microsoft's OS lifecycle policy. List entries are now sorted alphabetically. Sections and subsections will remain unsorted alphabetically, since they're already sorted by what I believe to be the most relevant. Revamped the "Games" section; adding four new subsections: "Pre-Vista era", "Unofficially works on Vista", "Last official release to run on Vista (sequels do not support Vista)", and "Last official relase to run on Vista (sequels unlikely to support Vista)". Removed Quake Live and F.E.A.R 3, as there is unlikely to be a sequel to these games since they were released quite a long time ago.
  13. Thanks for the kind words, Ryan. Nice to see you around again after so long. I agree with your observation about pinning the list. I think this would make a good pinned topic for the Vista forum here, but I'll let the admins make that call. Some recent improvements I've made to the list (which I'm about to mention in the July 13 sum of changes) may make this a more pin-worthy topic than it was before.
  14. Ahhh okay, I remember that now. Thank you for pointing that out. Anyway, as I said, the "Games" section will include: *Last versions of games for Vista (in the situation where the sequel(s) don't work), *Games that don't *officially* support Vista, but work anyway (should be listed as UNS. The last *officially* supported release will be mentioned next to the UNS entry). Does that seem good to everyone? If there's any more additions or suggestions for improving the list (or how it presents the information shown here), please let me know. I hope people are getting use of the list and are finding it easy to read and use- that's my goal.
  15. I don't recall ever seeing such a suggestion from you... In fact, you're the one that suggested more than half of the games that are listed there to begin with, no? I'm not trying to be rude, I just never remember seeing that suggestion prior to Greenhillmaniac posting it... Anyway, I will probably scan through the list of games again when I have access to a PC (I'm on the mobile site atm) and I'll remove any unnecessary entries. The goal of the "Games" section is to list the *last* versions of games for Windows Vista (including those that don't "officially" support it but still work with it - they're listed as UNS), and some entries that are listed may not meet that criteria (I haven't had access to a PC since adding them, so I haven't had time to research all of them). The earliest entries (such as COD: Black Ops 2) I did research, and found that the sequels didn't support Vista, so they were added to the list. Others (notably GTA V) I added because their sequels (whenever they are released) will more than likely not support (and maybe won't even work at all with) Windows Vista, however it isn't confirmed by the game developers yet. For example, GTA VI (whenever it is released) will be released outside of Vista's EOL, and as such, will more than likely require at least Windows 7 as a minimum, as most modern games do nowadays. Although, one could argue that it could be an (UNS) instance where the game works fine on Vista, despite not being "officially" supported on the OS. We'll just have to wait until the game is released, and I will update the list to reflect the information as it becomes available (lord willin' and the creeks don't rise...).
  16. SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR JULY 1, 2017: Replaced "Multi-engine supported" 'Web browsers' subsection with "Independently-based" subsection (This was mainly done because there were more independently-based browsers than multi-engine browsers, and the one [and only] multi-engine browser listed was also independently-based. A separate multi-engine section may be added back in future as more browsers of that criteria are added to the list). Fixed error pointed out by @jumper (Moved Qupzilla 1.8.9 from Firefox-based to independently-based subsection, since I originally thought the browser was based on Firefox. This turned out to be incorrect). Added Global Offensive, Counter-Strike 1.6, Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter, Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter, Serious Sam 3 BFE, Rocket League, Portal 2, Left 4 Dead & Left 4 Dead 2, Serious Sam 2, Dragon Ball Xenoverse, Don't Starve Together, Quake Live, Road Redemption, Chivalry Medieval Warfare, F.E.A.R 3, Killing Floor, Bioshock Infinite, One Late Night: Deadline, and Star Wars Republic Commando to "Games" section. Updated "Logitech Gaming Software" listing to v8.94.104, as it is confirmed by @burd that this version (unofficially) works on Vista. Changed (ONG) "Epic browser" listing to (UNS) status, as the browser "officially" supports Windows 7 or later, but despite that, the latest version runs just fine in Vista.
  17. Thanks to everyone for the additions/corrections. I have updated the list to reflect these, and I will post them in the summary of changes to the list for July 1, 2017 soon.
  18. SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR JUNE 29, 2017: Divided (ONG) "Web browsers" section into four subsections: Firefox-based, Independently-based, Multi-engine supported, and Chromium-based. Added Tor Browser, Dooble, Cocoon, and Epic Browser to (ONG) "Web browsers" section. Added a new (ONG) section: "Console Emulators" Added Dolphin and PCSX2 to (ONG) "Console Emulators" section. Added a new section: "Games" Added GTA V, Doom 2016, Just Cause 3, Battlefield 4, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 to "Games" section.
  19. Thanks for the additions. I have added them all except for Coowon and BlackHawk. Coowon has not been updated since 2014, and BlackHawk has not been updated since 2015. As such, these browsers are most likely abandoned. On the other hand, Epic browser looks awfully interesting. Chromium 58 on Vista? That's something I would've never thought would happen... Here's to hoping it keeps working/being updated on Vista for a long while.
  20. Thanks for confirming that Doom 2016 works in Vista. I shall add it to the list next time I edit it (in a few hours). As for Conkeror, it's working fine for me too thanks to the installation MSI (the manual installation method didn't work for me on Vista). Like I said, I have added it to the ONG browsers section.
  21. Nevermind. I was overlooking the Windows Installer MSI file provided here: http://conkeror.org/InstallationWindows as my browser auto-scrolled to the "manual install" section when I first visited the page. Sorry about the confusion; the reason I was having so much trouble was because I was trying to perform a manual install, which is definitely complicated and doesn't seem to want to work. Anyway, I shall add Conkeror to the list now. Also, since I can't find any solid evidence that the browser is discontinued, I will add it to the (ONG) browsers section. Also, does Doom 2016 work in Windows Vista? According to my research, Doom 3 is the last (and only) version that supports Vista. I'm aware that various games that claim to "require" Windows 7 work just fine with Vista (since Vista's Platform Update adds DX11 support). However, is Doom 2016 one of them? If not, I will add Doom 3 in favor of Doom 2016 when I update the list again.
  22. If you want to include a list of games, that would be great. I can already think of a few (GTA V, Just Cause 3, and Battlefield 3). I'd also like to add a new section for console emulators, such as Dolphin and PCSX2. However, it's quite late at the moment, so I'll have to add all of that next time I'm online.
  23. Could you please explain as to how exactly you installed it? I can't even get a browser window to open without various errors. If you can explain that for me, I'll be glad to add it to the list.
  24. SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR JUNE 28, 2017 Separated "Misc. System Utilities section" into two new sections: "Misc. Software Utilities" & "Misc. Hardware Utilities". Moved Samsung Magician 4.9.7 & Windows USB/DVD download tool to new "Misc. Hardware Utilities" section. Added System Mechanic Classic v16.0.0.10 & System Mechanic Professional Classic v15.5.0.61 to "Misc. Software Utilities" section. Added new section: "Desktop enhancement software". Moved Classic Shell 3.6.8, Fences 2, and ObjectDock 2 to new "Desktop enhancement software" section. Added SystemShield AntiVirus and SystemShield AntiSpyware to (ONG) "Antivirus/security software" section. Added a new (ONG) section: "Hard drive utilities" Added IOLO DriveScrubber and AOMEI Partition Assistant (all editions) to new (ONG) "Hard drive utilities" section.
