  1. I know, and I am pretty good at sorting out information, but it's still a convoluted format, and (are you the maintainer of that site?) even to me a bit "wordy". For example, one post, from that site: "Microsoft Windows 98/98 SE Embedded Web Fonts T2EMBED.DLL 5.00.2195.7073 Security Vulnerability Fix: Direct download [211 KB, English]. Requires MS IE 5.5 SP2 or newer already installed! BUG: T2EMBED.DLL Fix above installs BUGgy INF file! FIX: MUST Install this INF Fix [63 KB] AFTER installing T2EMBED.DLL Fix above!" Nowhere is the MS KB# or MS update number found, and any specifics AT THIS POINT WHY the update is "buggy", why there are TWO "fixes" and WHAT the "fixes" do, are, and how/why they are needed! Finally, unless I KNOW I have a font problem, I have no clue why I need it! Imagine if I am a "much less than a power user" who just wants to keep my "windows" updated! This needs to be made clear and easy to reference back to either a MS bulletin, a CERT advisory, or a publicized security issue that can be remedied by third parties - such as you kind folks! Don't you see that THIS IS MY POINT! That quote is from my site [just look at the URL where it was quoted from ]:http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#9SU Now for the way I decided to post updates at my site [to make it short and easy to understand for everybody, not just for a restricted crowd of power users/geeks like us, and without posting any MSKB Qxxxxxx/KBxxxxxx and/or MS0x-0xx numbers, which most people find annoying and unnecessary]: - Official updates start with the word "Microsoft". - Unofficial updates start with the word "Unofficial". - All Windows editions a particular update applies to are listed after "Microsoft", from oldest to newest. - Brief bug/error description follows. - File(s) name(s) which will be replaced by the update follow(s). - File(s) version(s)/build(s) follow(s) [this is also a bit annoying for some people]. - The 1st link is either to MS security bulletin or MSKB article which describes the bug and its fix [if all that info available]. - The 2nd link which says "Direct download" is to the file itself. - If any other steps are necessary for a particular update to work/install properly, they will be detailed step by step, eventually with links to files that might be necessary. - If more info [from MS and/or other 3rd parties] is available on the subject, it will be listed as link(s) to relevant web pages. And if anybody wants to view the MS security bulletin and/or MSKB number or entire file name/location, all you have to do is place your mouse cursor on top of the link, and the entire URL will appear in your browser's status bar at the bottom [depending on which browser is used, and particular browser settings]. Or if you like, just right-click on a link and select Properties. Then copy + paste it into Notepad/etc if you wish. I found this way to be effective for most users out there. I started posting updates ~ 9 years ago, and it seems to work ok so far. But if anyone has suggestions on how to improve this update posting system [and if I have the time to do it], please post here your ideas/templates/etc, and I'll carefully consider them. Please consider the fact that a single change to my system of posting updates requires me to change all wording for all updates at my site [all MS OSes], and I probalby have a few thousand updates that would need to be changed. Please consider the amount of time and work necessary to do this. Hope this helps
  2. Actually tuneup.exe from Plus! 98 is older than the 1 from ME:TUNEUP.EXE 4.10.0.1998 = Plus! 98 setup CD TUNEUP.EXE 4.90.0.3000 = WinME setup CD I don't use WMI, I have deleted all related files. Every time I tried WMI files from WinME, didn't work. I understand that WMI has [probably] something to do with SR/WFP, but to change WinME system files code to match Win98SE [and/or the other way around] is not likely to happen in this life, unless you want to spend lots of time trying. And unfortunately I don't have neither the time nor the programming background necessary to do this. I'll test these files in the near future: cardfile.exe sigverif.exe winpopup.exe and will add them to 98SE2ME [probably option 2] if they work. This file: upwizun.exe is only an uninstaller, has nothing to do with the OS itself. HTH
  3. I have added this to the "KNOWN BUGS + FIXES" section of READ1ST.TXT: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT HTH
  4. C:\TEMP is %TEMP% on my 98SE computer.@MDGxDon't know why this error comes upd, didn't happen on mine. Maybe it happens because you use an other directory then standard C:\Windows\Temp anyway you can simply extract the contents with e.g. winrar and then install using Q918899_d_RTMQFE.inf Yeah, I did that. Thanks for the tip. I just copied the files from C:\TEMP [while the installer was paused] somewhere else, and then ran the INF. But if other people also have %TEMP% variable set somewhere else than %windir%\TEMP , the installer won't work. You need to account for all situations, no matter where the %TEMP% location is set. Are you adding the temp directory to the SED config file? If you are, you need to remove it. If not specified inside the SED, the temp dir is found automatically by the iexpress installer, it just searches the memory to find the SET variable location. In my case [example]: SET TEMP=C:\TEMP SET TMP=C:\TEMP SET PKTMP=C:\TEMP [this sets the TEMP variable for PKZIP/PKUNZIP] These lines are in my autoexec.bat. HTH
  5. Good point.I'll mention this fix in 98SE2ME READ1ST.TXT in the next release. Thanks.
  6. 8-9-2006 Updated/fixed: - GRPHFLTS.EXE - ME900725.EXE - Q912919.EXE - L3C.EXE - 98SE2XP.EXE Added/new: - L3CWMP11.EXE - Bunch of Win98/98SE/ME fixes. _____________________________________ the_guy: Q910906.EXE stops with error: _____________________________________winxpi: Q918899 IE patch stops with error: C:\TEMP is %TEMP% on my 98SE computer._____________________________________ erpdude8: Please try GRPHFLTS.EXE again on Win95, see if it works now. It works correctly on my 98SE + 98 FE. Thanks. _____________________________________ I'll look into the August MS security bulletins, maybe I can make a 98/ME patch [or two]. Thanks everybody. Cheers

  8. I believe TweakBIOS [freeware + registered versions available] can do this from native DOS, and registered version allows loading preset configs from autoexec.bat: http://www.mdgx.com/speed.htm#BIO The catch is TweakBIOS hasn't been updated in years, and doesn't recognize newer chipsets. * TweakBIOS v1.53b 16-bit ultimate BIOS, CPU, chipset + video configuration tool for MS-DOS 5/6/7/8 + Windows 3.1x/9x/ME [freeware + $20 registered versions]: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download244.html Direct download [160 KB, freeware version]: http://www.miro.pair.com/tweakbios/twk153b.zip Works with ALL X86 AMD, Intel + Cyrix CPUs and (but not restricted to) these: Motherboard chipsets: - Intel: 430xX, 440xX, 450xX, 810, 820 + 840 - VIA: VP-1, VP-2, VP-3, MVP-3 + Apollo Pro - AMD: AMD-640 + AMD-750 - SiS: 551x, 557x, 558x, 559x, 85C50x, 496, 530, 540, 560, 600 + 620 - OPTi Viper + Vendetta - ALi Aladdin II, III, IV + V - UMC 881 - ITE 8330G Video chipsets: - Tseng Labs ET6000 - Matrox Mystique - Intel i740 A MUST for all PC performance tweakers, no matter what type of motherboard, CPU or BIOS you might have. 9. My pages should have all updates I am aware of, for all M$ OSes: DOS 6/7/8, Windows 3.1, WfWG 3.1x, Windows 95, 95a OSR1, 95B/95C OSR 2.x, 98, 98 SP1, 98 SE, ME, NT4, 2000, XP + 2003. That includes those from WU [Windows Update], those from M$ servers [not necessarily available on WU], those issued by M$ but not available on M$ servers [so-called "hotfixes"], and also unofficial ones, made by concerned users from M$ files that were intended for other Oses or from modified older versions/builds, but which were tested to make sure they work OK with 9x/ME/NT4/etc. Every update/patch/fix/(hot)fix/etc specifies the OS(es) it is/are meant to install on, usually enumerates all files that would be installed, most of the time their versions/builds, and most of the time what bug(s) is/are fixed by installing respective update(s). All updates have links to their original developer web pages, like MSKB articles or MS0X-0XX Security Bulletins. If any special steps are needed to install a particular update, you will find them detailed step-by-step, usually in bold characters. And if you hold your mouse cursor over the "Direct Download" or file name link, you will see the exact location of the file , and the file name + extension. That is if you are using MS IE 4/5/6, and have disabled the "Show friendly URLs" box in MS IE Properties -> Advanced tab. 13. I've also been "toying around" with AMOVIE.OCX a while back, but I like Media Player Classic [MPC] 6.4.9.0 better. MPC has built-in codecs for most of the standards out there, unlike M$ Windows Media Player (WMP). And MPC works also with embedded streaming media [server side scripts]. So I have replaced WMP as default internet media player with MPC.
  14. PROBLEMCHYLD: I did not add UPNPUI.DLL nor IRMON.EXE because: - I don't have any infrared devices to test IR*.* files from WinME CD. If you wish to test the IR files from WinME CD: IRPROPS.CPL INFRARED.DLL IR_NDI.DLL IRCAMERA.DLL WSPIRDA.DLL IRFTP.EXE IRMON.EXE INFRARED.INF IRCAMERA.INF IRDA.INF IRMINI.INF IRDA.SYS IRMINI.SYS WSPIRDAK.SYS RCOMM.VXD IRENUM.VXD on your 98SE OS, please do so, and let me know if they work [or if they don't]. Open the INF files in Notepad to view interdependencies, file locations, registry keys, regsvr32 registration etc. You must have at least 1 IR device plugged into one of the serial [iR] ports of your computer mobo or into a 3rd party ISA/PCI add-on card. - UPNPUI.DLL is tied into the UPnP files, but *only* if WinXP ICS is *also* installed *and* properly networked. Without WinXP ICS/network, UPnP files are useless. And besides, 98SE doesn't include the other UPnP files [which can be downloaded separately]: * Microsoft Windows 98/98 SE + ICS UPnP Unchecked Buffer System Compromise SSDPAPI.DLL, UPNP.DLL + SSDPSRV.EXE 4.90.3003 Security Vulnerability Fix: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms01-059.mspx Direct download [223 KB, English]: http://download.microsoft.com/download/win.../314941USA8.EXE More info: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314941 Requires Windows XP ICS client already installed! MSKB: Internet Connection Sharing (ICS): http://support.microsoft.com/?id=234815 MSKB: Universal Plug and Play (UPnP): http://support.microsoft.com/?id=262458 How to install UPnP Security Vulnerability Fix on Windows 98/98 SE without Windows XP ICS Client: 1. Make sure Windows 98/98 SE ICS is already installed + properly configured: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/j_helmig/icsclnt.htm More info: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_98/ 2. Create C:\TEMP (example) from a DOS box: MD C:\TEMP 3. Download 314941USA8.EXE (see above) into C:\TEMP. 4. Run: C:\TEMP\314941USA8.EXE /C /Q /T:C:\TEMP 5. Copy these 3 files from C:\TEMP into %windir%\SYSTEM (usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM): COPY/Y C:\TEMP\SSDPAPI.DLL %windir%\SYSTEM COPY/Y C:\TEMP\UPNP.DLL %windir%\SYSTEM COPY/Y C:\TEMP\SSDPSRV.EXE %windir%\SYSTEM overwriting existing ones (if any). 6. Run: %windir%\SYSTEM\SSDPSRV.EXE 7. Create a new shortcut to %windir%\SYSTEM\SSDPSRV.EXE into %windir%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup . 8. Delete C:\TEMP. Therefore, because the purpose of 98SE2ME is to replace 98SE files with ME files, adding the UPnP files only adds to the size of the installer [which is now 3 MB because I just added Movie Maker ], serving no other purpose. HTH
  15. I have links to your WUPG98 pack [look under the "Windows 98/98 SE/ME Updates + Patches" section]: http://www.mdgx.com/ and here: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#9SL Good job!
  16. I remember trying this fix a while back in Win98SE + ME, with mixed results. You may want to try it too [similar to yours]: -------snip------- REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\*\shell\openas\command] @="RUNDLL32.EXE C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHELL32.DLL,OpenAs_RunDLL %1" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Unknown\shell\openas\command] @="RUNDLL32.EXE C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHELL32.DLL,OpenAs_RunDLL %1" -------snip------- Change C:\\WINDOWS if different on your computer. Save as REG file in Notepad and then run it. HTH
  17. Just because there is more than 1 web site out there incompatible with Sun Java, that doesn't mean Java programming is the cause of your errors. This problem has been discussed in details a while back, when MS discontinued support for MSJVM, and started recommending Sun Java as alternative for Java server based programming. But a *lot* of web sites at the time didn't listen or comply, out of lack of resources, laziness etc, or simply didn't care if users switched to Sun Java. They just kept their old scripts which are compatible only with MSJVM. And that's because MSJVM [as you may know already] is an obsolete proprietary version of Java compiled by M$, specifically for their Internet Explorer browsers. And it seems this issue is still valid today with some web sites, which used to/still are [probably] programming for [obsolete] MSJVM compatibility, *not* accounting for the millions of users who already switched to Sun Java interface. If you have the time/care to read about these issues, please do a Google search, I'm sure a lot of articles are still available. On the other hand, I'm sure there are still flaws in Sun Java that can be/will be fixed sooner or later. If you send them email with the specific errors you encountered at which web site(s), maybe they'll test those environments and eventually fix the problem(s), if those problems are still actual, and if they still support those platforms. IMHO: Anyway, just because Sun Java doesn't work on a few poorly programmed web sites, that is not a good reason to down-grade back to the obsolete MSJVM. And if you wish to delete the dummy MSJVM files, and eventually reinstall MSJVM, please see: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#JVM FYI: Beta releases of Sun Java 1.6 do not support/install on Win9x [95/98/ME] OSes anymore, only NTx OSes [2000/XP/2003/Vista]. The only releases that support 9x OSes are 1.5.xx: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#JAVA HTH
  18. One can "streamline" WMP9 to eliminate most if not all bloat c***p and spyware [examples]: * Delete DRM [from 98SE2MP10 ReadMe]: http://www.mdgx.com/98mp10/READ1ST.TXT * Disable unique ID [from 98SE2MP10 ReadMe]: http://www.mdgx.com/98mp10/READ1ST.TXT * And of course, one can delete all icons, play lists, tweaks, skins, demos, uninstall/detection etc files from WMP (sub)directories + %windir%\system , to free disk space. 19. Thanks.I've tried a late beta of Win2003, and it had the internet games. I guess they removed them in final/Gold/RTM edition.
  20. Thanks for the tips.I'll see what I can do. BTW: This is what I say here: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#SS Nothing about Win2003 SP1.HTH
  21. Thanks for the tips, Wijono. Good find. Theoretically this shouldn't happen. 1 more bug in M$ OS, I guess.
  22. He could have elaborated just a little a bit at this point IMO by saying where he believes a problem could occur with LLXX patch or what the other code, he thinks needs to be also patched, does.I can't tell for sure, but just by looking at his notes, I'd say he probably needs more testing and more time to figure out which code needs added, patched, etc... [?]Anyway, I know he'll send me more details when he has time. HTH
  23. I always use extrac32.exe to preserve LFNs of files inside CABs. FYI: 98SE2ME.EXE installs latest version of extrac32.exe [5.2.3790.0]: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46349 You don't have to install any 98SE2ME options, just install 98SE2ME.EXE in C:\9!M = the installer will do that automatically when you 1st run it. It will also copy EXTRAC32.EXE from C:\9!M into %windir% and will overwrite whatever older [buggy] version you may have. Then you can uninstall 98SE2ME from either: - Start button -> Programs -> 98SE2ME -> run "Uninstall 98SE2ME" shortcut. OR: - Start button -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> select "98SE2ME: Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE" -> click Add/Remove button. To install 98SE2ME.EXE you must be running Win98 SE OS. Older extrac32 versions may be buggy. This newer one is ok as far as I know. If you prefer other [3rd party] tools to do this: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ZIP Look at the ones which support CAB format. Most are free(ware). HTH
  24. Thanks for your work finding this bug + fix. Have you tried changing that registry value to: C:\\WINDOWS\\rundll32.exe C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1 Make sure the backslash is doubled for all drive + directory paths in the registry. Single backslash is interpreted by the registry as Escape character. More info here [look towards the bottom of the topic]: http://www.mdgx.com/reg.htm#RF FYI: All those who have Windows 98/ME installed in any other location than C:\WINDOWS *must* adapt path names to match their setups. HTH
  25. I'll add this file to options 1 + 2 in the near future [together with clipsrv.exe].I'll also add irmon.exe to option 3. I'm also considering adding modded MM from X-mas W98UPG Pack to options 1 + 2, but I need more time for testing. All this, time permitting. I'll update this thread when I post the updates.
