98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
File version matters, not file date.Newer is usually better [but there may be exceptions]. Thanks for the find. I'll add the newer D*ZIP.* 4.xx files to 98SE2ME soon. -

oscardog: What OS are your clusters/blades running, if not talking just theoretically? A retail/custom Linux distro perhaps?

It was your kernel32.dll 4.10.2225 patch, but I tested it back then on an extremely tweaked 98SE OS.It works ok on a fresh 98SE install, though.

9x [95/98/ME] OSes cannot be moded without entire core re-writing to recognize and [what's more difficult] use 2 or more cores or 2 or more separate CPUs. Only after such core re-write a dedicated driver could theoretically be used for this purpose. NTx [NT4/2000/XP/2003/Vista] OSes have completely different core architecture, and code for more than 1 CPU recognition and SMTP usage has been included early on. Example: Windows 2003 server datacenter edition 64-bit [X64] can recognize up to 64 CPUs or cores: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003...datacenter.mspx Dual-boot of more than 1 9x OS is possible [no matter the number of CPUs or cores, because the 9x OS will recognize + use only the 1st one], if adequate multi-boot loader/manager is used [examples]: http://www.mdgx.com/dos.htm#DOS See XOSL, GAG + BOOTMGR [all free(ware)]. Or one can create custom batch files to multi-boot 9x OSes, since they all use same boot record [WIN40]. For example, for testing purposes, I multi-boot 98FE, 98SE + ME within the same partition, using only batch files. Partition/drive used doesn't matter if enough disk space is available to accomodate all those OSes. HTH

The release of the alternative [if you want to call them that] kernel patches by anonymous author has nothing to do with my testing of or my opinions about your patches. The anonymous author saw this thread, probably tested your patches [?], and decided to create his own afterwards. Everything I received in email form anonymous author is posted here [please see above]. I have nothing to do with this. I do appreciate your work and your contribution to 9x OSes "life extension" greatly, as I'm sure many others do too. I'm not trying to start a competition or whatever else some may want to call it. All you need is to run MORESTAK.EXE followed by the 16-bit file you want to patch [it's a patcher, not a memory resident (TSR)].Example: MORESTAK WINFILE.EXE Patched files must be placed in the same directory where the original resides, overwriting the original. You should keep a backup of the original file in a safe location. MORESTAK must be run only from a DOS box/window, not from true/native MS-DOS. About testing patched files: I have no idea how to test them, because just like you said, documentation is sketchy + unclear. Maybe an email to the author would bring some light into this subject? Maybe he can write a small testing tool if you ask him? His (updated) web site is here [please note that morestak is only in German]: http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~omat/hs_fr...re/morestak.htm The patch is here: http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~omat/viewz...ip/MORESTAK.EXE Pascal source here: http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~omat/viewz...RC/MORESTAK.PAS Source text here: http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~omat/viewz...AK.PAS?auto=PAS This is the guy who developed original DOSLFN: http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~omat/hs_freeware/freew.html Improved DOSLFN [based on original above]: http://www.geocities.com/jadoxa/doslfn/ BTW: I have updated MORESTAK.ZIP [6 KB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/MORESTAK.ZIP to include usage guidelines + examples [MORESTAK.TXT]. I tested option 3 on my tweaked 98SE system and also on a "virgin" [from scratch, "fresh" install] 98SE system.Updated Movie Maker 1.0.1377.0 installs properly on both. Please look inside the "C:\Program Files\MoviMakr" folder [default]. Right-click on MOVIEMK.EXE, should say 1.0.1377.0 under the Version tab. TIP: You must have the WinME setup CD English edition for this to work, because 98SE2ME option 3 extracts original moviemk.exe file from the WinME CABs, and then patches it to the newer version [1.0.1377.0] using a Vpatch patch [PATMM.EXE = found in C:\9!M]. Excerpt from READ1ST.TXT: READ1ST.TXT I also posted this at the 98SE2ME forum [please see 1st post]:http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46349 Hope this helps. -

maximus-decim: Many thanks for the INF update. I have posted it at my site, here: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#9SU File [66 KB, iexpress installer = copies USBSTOR.INF to %windir%\INF]: http://www.mdgx.com/spx/NUSB24.EXE I'd like to ask a favor: Could you please use the INF I posted at URL above [attached below] for all future NUSB updates? This modified USBSTOR.INF is a little smaller, because I removed all unnecessary spaces. I also modified this line to read [just like the original USBSTOR.INF from WinME setup CD]: LayoutFile=LAYOUT.INF,LAYOUT1.INF,LAYOUT2.INF Please take a look, and let me know if you want to make any other changes. If you do make other changes, please post here the new INF, so I can upload it at my site. Thanks in advance. Best wishes. USB_STOR.ZIP -

randiroo76073: Underclocking does not guarantee electronic components shelf-life extension, because there are [as others have pointed out here very well] other factors besides overclocking [and its consequences] that threaten silicon integrity. But proper cooling [lowering of ambient temperature] does. In conclusion, underclocking is only 1 of the factors contributing to extended silicon shelf-life, by reducing the risk of elecromigration. FYI: According to the International System of Units (ISU) [from French (original name) = Systeme Internationale d'Unites (SIU)], all countries today are already using, should use or start using if not already, the metric system, which includes the Celsius [also known as the "centigrade" system] unit of measurement for temperature. ISU / SIU is part of the norms issued by BIPM [bureau International des Poids et Mesures (International Bureau of Weights and Measures)]: http://www.bipm.fr/ which are approved + used by almost all countries today as "common denominator". WHAT?MAKE2GB worked perfectly fine with patched 4.10.2222 - either they broke SetFilePointer in 2225 or something else is at fault. I have also recieved reports of correct operation from other members here. MDGx please post system configuration and if at all possible, test on a virgin install. LLXX:This is the answer from the anonymous author: _____________________________P.S.: I have tested your patched kernel32.dll 4.10.2225 only on my every-day-workhorse [tweaked] 98SE system, with all these updates installed: - MS IE 6.0 SP1 + all official + unofficial updates - WMP9, WMP10 Codecs+DRM, 98SE2XP, 98SEMP10 + all official + unofficial updates - DirectX 9.0c - 98SE2ME - 98SE SP2 2.1a - all other available official + unofficial updates. Sure, you can use any decoder/encoder to play MP3s. Just regsvr32 the old one from WMP 6.4. Examples: %windir%\system\regsvr32 %windir%\system\l3codeca.acm or: %windir%\system\regsvr32 %windir%\system\l3codecp.acm or: %windir%\system\regsvr32 %windir%\system\l3codecx.acm or: %windir%\system\regsvr32 %windir%\system\L3CODECX.AX depending on which codec(s) you have available. I have all of the above in %windir%\system . The last one you regsvr32-ed will take over. HTH

(for those who own any) Creative Sound Blaster cards
MDGx replied to dhruba.bandopadhyay's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Like I said, the best way to run DOS games is MS-DOS itself, a.k.a. native/pure/true DOS mode. And best MS-DOS is 7.10, the one bundled with Windows 98 SE. That's because any emulation software, like VMware or DOSBox or VDMSound etc, only slows down any DOS software because it is running in a VM [Virtual Machine], not in real-mode. Real mode DOS allows all hardware resources [unlike M$ Windows or VMWare emulation] to be accessed instantaneously [in real time], and that include video + audio. Some DOS games won't even start from within Windows DOS boxes [PIF shortcuts] or VMWare or DOSBox. That's because they were designed to take over exclusively hardware resources, which is impossible from within Windows/emulation. And other DOS games will just slow down to a crawl, because of similar reasons. All you need is to boot to native MS-DOS 7.10, and use customized config.sys and autoexec.bat files to play your DOS games. Example: if a game requires EMS [Expanded Memory], you need to put EMM386.EXE with the RAM switch enabled in your config.sys [generic example]: SWITCHES=/F DOS=HIGH,UMB,AUTO DEVICE=C:\MAX\HIMEM.SYS /NUMHANDLES=128 /TESTMEM:OFF /Q DEVICE=C:\MAX\EMM386.EXE I=B000-B7FF RAM M9 A=64 H=120 D=256 AUTO NOTR DEVICEHIGH=C:\MAX\IFSHLP.SYS DEVICEHIGH=C:\MAX\CDROM\QCDROM.SYS /D:DVD-G /D:CDRW-I INSTALLHIGH=C:\MAX\CDROM\MSCDEX.EXE /D:DVD-G /D:CDRW-I /M:8 /E INSTALLHIGH=C:\MAX\SMARTDRV.EXE 12288 16 A- B- C+ D+ E+ F+ G+ H+ I+ /N /Q INSTALLHIGH=C:\MAX\CTMOUSE.EXE /P /R44 INSTALLHIGH=C:\MAX\NOOFF.COM BUFFERS=11,0 FILES=70 FCBS=1,0 LASTDRIVE=J STACKS=0,0 SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM C:\ /E:2048 /P /F ACCDATE=C- D- E- F- And autoexec.bat should look like this [generic example]: @ECHO OFF C:\3D\FASTVID.EXE 111 -128 C0000000 C:\MAX\EMM386.EXE AUTO IF EXIST C:\SB16\CTCM.EXE C:\SB16\CTCM.EXE /B IF EXIST C:\SB16\AWEUTIL.COM C:\SB16\AWEUTIL.COM /S /EM:GM /R:0 /C:0 IF EXIST C:\SB16\MIXERSET.EXE C:\SB16\MIXERSET.EXE /P /Q IF EXIST C:\CTPNP.CFG DEL C:\CTPNP.CFG IF EXIST C:\MAX\MODE.COM C:\MAX\MODE.COM CON: RATE=32 DELAY=1 SET TEMP=D:\TEMP SET TMP=D:\TEMP SET PKTMP=D:\TEMP SET DOS16M=2 SET CLASSPATH="%winbootdir%\SYSTEM\QTJAVA.ZIP" SET QTJAVA="%winbootdir%\SYSTEM\QTJAVA.ZIP" SET MOUSE=C:\MAX SET COPYCMD=/Y SET DIRCMD=/A/O:GEN/P/V SET FX_GLIDE_NO_SPLASH=1 SET TZ=MST7MDT SET OANOCACHE=1 SET SST_FT_CLK_DEL=0x4 SET SST_TF0_CLK_DEL=0x6 SET SST_TF1_CLK_DEL=0x6 SET SST_VIN_CLKDEL=0x1 SET SST_VOUT_CLKDEL=0x0 SET SST_TMUMEM_SIZE=2 SET CTCM=C:\SB16 SET SOUND=C:\SB16 SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6 SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E MODE:0 Or if a DOS game requires only XMS [Extended Memory], you need this config.sys, autoexec.bat above can be the same [generic example]: SWITCHES=/F DOS=HIGH,UMB,AUTO DEVICE=C:\MAX\UMBPCI.SYS /S DEVICE=C:\MAX\HIRAM.EXE DEVICE=C:\MAX\HIMEM.SYS /NUMHANDLES=128 /TESTMEM:OFF /Q DEVICEHIGH=C:\MAX\IFSHLP.SYS DEVICEHIGH=C:\MAX\CDROM\QCDROM.SYS /D:DVD-G /D:CDRW-I INSTALLHIGH=C:\MAX\CDROM\MSCDEX.EXE /D:DVD-G /D:CDRW-I /M:8 /E INSTALLHIGH=C:\MAX\SMARTDRV.EXE 12288 16 A- B- C+ D+ E+ F+ G+ H+ I+ /N /Q INSTALLHIGH=C:\MAX\CTMOUSE.EXE /P /R44 INSTALLHIGH=C:\MAX\NOOFF.COM BUFFERS=11,0 FILES=70 FCBS=1,0 LASTDRIVE=J STACKS=0,0 SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM C:\ /E:2048 /P /F ACCDATE=C- D- E- F- Please notice that these boot files have full support for PS/2 or serial mouse [CTMOUSE], full support for Creative SB AWE64/AWE64 Gold, full support for 2 CD/DVD drives in DOS, 3dfx Voodoo2 SLI 3D only video card, primary [PCI or AGP] video controller LFB + VGA/SVGA Write Combining [which must have VESA/VBE 2.0 or 3.0 built into the BIOS]. Some MP3 files are encoded using newer codecs/APIs, and the standard Windows MP3 codecs [like L3CODEC *.ACM] may not be able to play/decode them. You need a tool which can detect the exact codec used for a particular MP3, and then use an appropriate tool [decoder, player] to play back/decode/etc it. I don't play/download/encode/decode MP3s, so I don't know of any such tools. But when in doubt, there's always Google: www.google.com Hope this helps.

98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
1. I have not tried 98lite recently, because way back, when I tried an older [full] version, it messed up my 98SE computer. That experience steered me away from using 98lite. That's why I do not test 98SE2ME nor any other of my upgrades/replacements on "98lite-ned" 9x Oses. And that's why I practically don't have any experience with 98lite. But I'm glad your AC97 sound drivers work again, even if by using a re-install workaround. 2. I'm also glad your APM features work again. T'was my intention to fix this lil bug in the 98SE2ME 8-22-2006 edition. 3. Win2000 can be used today [only if SP4 and all post-SP4 updates are installed] (almost) as well as XP for all purposes: gaming, CAD, 3D graphics/modeling, A/V editing/encoding, CD/DVD burning etc. Actually, all u need to do is install AutoPatcher 2000: http://www.neowin.net/forum/?showforum=89 http://www.neowin.net/forum/?showtopic=486485 But personally, I still prefer a fine-tuned Win98SE anytime. 4. Many thanks for your [too] kind appreciation + compliments. I'm glad you find 98SE2ME useful. Enjoy. -

Tearing my hair out over memory problems!
MDGx replied to whocrazy's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
As I said, RAM doesn't slow down, because the speed at which electrons travel within the silicon wafers + copper wiring/PCB remains always the same at the same environment temperature/pressure/humidity, unless you drastically decrease or increase ambient temperature. Near absolute zero on the Kelvin scale [absolute zero K cannot be attained in the "real" world, it's only a "theoretical" value], electrons speed increases dramatically, which is what we like to call supraconductivity [also known as superconductivity]. But if RAM chips get [badly] deteriorated from electrostatic and/or (electro)magnetic discharges/fields, then operating/memory errors/lockups will likely ensue as a consequence. There are many cases of slightly damaged RAM chips where normal operation is not disturbed, but it is likely that in time any further damage will surface as operating/memory errors/lockups. Improper computer cooling may also lead to shortening RAM chips life, because increased temperature accelerates [as you well know] silicon microelectronic components damage, mainly through electromigration. HTH
