98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
I see. Thanks for the info. I'd like if you can send me the file you made. Thanks in advance. What I did: created INF + SED files from scratch copied some REG entries from IE883586.EXE INF for "Active Setup" = now the fix appears "as installed" in the registry same as official from M$ added vgxupdate.exe [renamed to vgxupd.exe] to add Qxxxxxx number in IE -> Help -> About [in official M$ SED command line is: vgxupdate.exe Qxxxxxx and quiet/admin command is: vgxupdate.exe /Q Qxxxxxx] created "fake"/empty Q925486_D.INF necessary for vgxupd.exe [otherwise it won't run properly] kept nirmcd.exe to kill WinME SR/WFP removed start.exe = seems not to be necessary for running nircmd.exe "kill" commands added sucatreg.exe from WinME cd-rom added CAT file from official KB925486 [Win2000 SP4 fix] added INF section to register CAT by running sucatreg.exe [RunPostSetupCommands] = tested only under Win98SE = yes, registering CAT works properly as far as I can tell, because the CAT is moved [as it should be] from %windir%\INF\Catalog to %windir%\SYSTEM\Catroot added regsvr32 entry for VGX.DLL [RunPostSetupCommands] removed sections for uninstall [why would some1 remove this fix? ] added section in SED to install only on IE 6.0 + 6.0 SP1 [FileSectionList] added section in SED to install only on 98FE, 98SE, ME + NT4 [TargetWin9xVersion + TargetNTVersion] I'm now using wextract.exe 6.00.2800.1168 posted by Petr = this way size of iexpress executables is smaller. You can see INF contents by extracting files from IE925486.EXE and then opening it in Notepad. Extract files manually from command line [example]: IE925486.EXE /c /q /t:c:\temp or use WinZip 9.x, PowerArchiver or 7-zip. If you wish to see the SED file, I can post it here, or email it to you. HTH _____________________________________________________ Petr: I can't find the topic where you mentioned makecert.exe [M$ tool to create certified CAT files] right now, so I'm going to post here what I found at MSDN web site: MSDN .NET Tools: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/cp...meworktools.asp MAKECERT.EXE [part of .NET SDK]: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/cp...makecertexe.asp .NET SDK [354 MB, contains makecert.exe]: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...44-c96d69c35dec Check digital signatures: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=241111 MAKECAT.EXE [part of Win2003 Server setup CD]: http://windowssdk.msdn.microsoft.com/en-us...y/ms731140.aspx ZIP contains makecert + makecat tools: MAKECERT.ZIP HTH -

I've made an unofficial VGX.DLL patch out of the official file released by M$ today [from official Win2000 SP4 patch]:http://www.msfn.org/board/?s=&showtopi...st&p=565543 Installs on 98FE, 98SE, ME + NT4, only with MS IE 6.0 or 6.0 SP1 already installed. The SED file checks for IE 6.0 or 6.0 SP1, otherwise doesn't install. I'll remove nircmd.exe + start.exe from unofficial 919587 fix. HTH -

So what to do if and when 98SE is no longer viable?
MDGx replied to emarkay's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Never been infected [without knowledge] with any virus/worm/trojan/zombie/rootkit/spyware/etc. The only times I got infected was on purpose, because of testing software/environments. Been using Win98SE [with all upgrades, extremely customized] since the day M$ started selling the upgrade on the internet [June 1999]. Dual-boot with WinXP OEM [with all upgrades, extremely customized] since the day M$ started selling it on the internet [september 2001]. Have also been using sporadically [mainly for testing purposes] WinME [with all upgrades, extremely customized]. Because of testing so much software, I sometimes use newly installed ["virgin" copies of] Win98FE, Win98SE + WinME. Also played around at 1 time or another with a few Linux distros: Corel [don't ask], Knoppix, Ubuntu, RedHat + Novel, mostly for testing purposes. I leave my PC on at all times [when I'm at home], and I use a cable modem connection [8 Mb/sec], which is always on. I use only a basic firewall [Kerio 2.1.5 = freeware]. Got a basic VPN/DMZ/firewall 4-port router. That's it. Nothing else. Haven't used any anti-virus/anti-spyware/similar tools for ~ 6-7 years. Whenever/if I use such tools, is only for testing purposes, or on somebody else's PC(s). Why I don't get infected: * Installed all OSes in directories other than default [my PC doesn't have C:\WINDOWS and never will]. * Changed all references from "C:\Program Files" to a short file name [8 chars] directory [Win98SE]. * Installed "C:\Documents And Settings" folder on different partition, under other name [short name = 8 chars] [WinXP]. * I keep important boot files [like HIMEM.SYS, IFSHLP.SYS, COMMAND.COM] in directories other than default [Win9x/ME]. * Manually + methodically "stripped" down my OSes of "dangerous" components, like Personal Web Server, FrontPage Extensions, NetBIOS, VPN, Outlook Express, Web Folders, NetMeeting, Messenger, IE Channels/IE Wallpapers, Active Desktop etc. * I keep separate copies of important boot/system/registry/startup files, to restore them just in case, using custom batch files. * MS IE 6.0 SP1 up to date with all security patches [official + unofficial], installed in directories other than default. * I use MS IE only for a handful of sites that require ActiveX [which is enabled only when I access Windows Update]. For the rest of the internet I use Firefox [current release]. Sometimes I use Opera 9.01, Netscape 3.04, 4.79 + 8.1 + Maxthon [for testing only]. * I do not use M$ Java VM [JVM]. I use Sun Java instead [latest release], and customized Java permissions. * Turned off all processes/TSRs/monitors/etc and keep startup empty [except the Kerio firewall process]. * In XP + ME I have uninstalled or turned off SR/WFP/PCHealth, Remote Desktop, Messenger, Automatic Updates, M$ Reporting tool, IE/OE Error Reporting tool etc. * I never used and will never use any M$ software other than operating systems [and a few games they distribute but don't develop]. Example: I use OpenOffice instead of M$ Office. * Never used backup/restore software. I do all backups/restores using custom batch files + PKZIP or 7-zip. * I keep my registry + start/boot files "clean", by running periodically [manually, never used Scheduling Agent] custom REG, INF + BAT files. * I always keep current copies of my main OSes on different physical hard disks and CD-Rs/DVD-Rs. Always use at least 4 hard disks with different partitions for each OS. And if I notice any weird behaviour, I reboot right away and replace the current OS copy with a good working one, from my most recent backups. * I use a huge HOSTS file with over 120,000 banned servers, with all my OSes: http://www.mdgx.com/hosts.htm * I spend a lot of time on the internet researching, and sometimes I do visit dubious/unsafe web sites [for testing], but never got infected. * I use batch files to periodically delete all traces of visited sites, cookies, history, temp files, browser cache, WMP cache + DRM etc. * Disabled all WMP reporting/update features + unique ID string. * I never used Outlook or any other offline mail client for email. I handle all my email through the web browser. * I use email providers/hosts who use quality email filters for spam, adware + spyware [white/gray/black listing etc]. * Rarely, whenever I need to surf anonymously, I use a free proxy server. * I customized Firefox javascript to ban dangerous interface scripts. * I never use easy to break/same passwords. * I don't do my banking, credit card stuff, taxes, accounting etc on the internet. I rarely buy stuff from the internet, only from a handful of web sites I trust, and always use a "protected" credit card [money back guaranteed if any unauthorized transations occur]. * I have removed all my personal info and disabled all spamming options from all my phone, internet, credit card and bank account providers [opt-out]. * Added my phone numbers to the national do-not-call directory [available only in USA]. * I subscribe to very few magazines/journals, I do no use store cards, money-saving promos etc. Long live 98SE. Best wishes. -

Petr,Thanks a lot for the tips. I have updated IE918899.EXE [3.61 MB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/IE918899.EXE - updated INFs. I left in place in the INFs: SmartReboot=I Reboot=1 and in the SED: RebootMode=I in the hope it helps to reboot without all those dialog boxes, but I guess it doesn't matter because the SED runs IEUPDATE.EXE, not an INF file. - replaced CAT file with older one from Q916281 [but not sure if it works without nircmd.exe + start.exe under WinME, so I left them in place]. I need more testing on a WinME computer to determine if CAT file works by itself. - cleaned up _sfx_manifest_ : [Options] Run="IEUPDATE.EXE" PatchDll="MSPATCHA.DLL" [Deltas] "RTMQFE\BROWSEUI.DLL"="BROWSEUI.DLL._P","BROWSEUI.DLL" "RTMQFE\CDFVIEW.DLL"="CDFVIEW.DLL._P","CDFVIEW.DLL" "RTMQFE\DANIM.DLL"="DANIM.DLL._P","DANIM.DLL" "RTMQFE\DXTMSFT.DLL"="DXTMSFT.DLL._P","DXTMSFT.DLL" "RTMQFE\DXTRANS.DLL"="DXTRANS.DLL._P","DXTRANS.DLL" "RTMQFE\IEPEERS.DLL"="IEPEERS.DLL._P","IEPEERS.DLL" "RTMQFE\INSENG.DLL"="INSENG.DLL._P","INSENG.DLL" "RTMQFE\JSPROXY.DLL"="JSPROXY.DLL._P","JSPROXY.DLL" "RTMQFE\MSHTML.DLL"="MSHTML.DLL._P","MSHTML.DLL" "RTMQFE\MSRATING.DLL"="MSRATING.DLL._P","MSRATING.DLL" "RTMQFE\MSTIME.DLL"="MSTIME.DLL._P","MSTIME.DLL" "RTMQFE\PNGFILT.DLL"="PNGFILT.DLL._P","PNGFILT.DLL" "RTMQFE\SHDOCVW.DLL"="SHDOCVW.DLL._P","SHDOCVW.DLL" "RTMQFE\SHLWAPI.DLL"="SHLWAPI.DLL._P","SHLWAPI.DLL" "RTMQFE\URLMON.DLL"="URLMON.DLL._P","URLMON.DLL" "RTMQFE\WININET.DLL"="WININET.DLL._P","WININET.DLL" [Verify] [Copy] [Delete] "*._P" "MSPATCHA.DLL" - added SED code to detect IE build: [Version] Class=IEXPRESS SEDVersion=3 [Options] PackagePurpose=InstallApp ShowInstallProgramWindow=1 HideExtractAnimation=0 UseLongFileName=1 InsideCompressed=0 CAB_FixedSize=0 CAB_ResvCodeSigning=0 CheckAdminRights=0 RebootMode=I InstallPrompt="Install %FriendlyName%?" BTW: How to play DivX movies streamed from internet servers in your browser if using Windows 98 (FE)/98 SE/ME. This works theoretically with Firefox 1.x.x.x, Netscape 8.x, MS IE 5/6, Opera 8.5/9.xx. Tested only with Win98SE [+ 98SE2ME + 98SE2XP + 98SEMP10] + MS IE 6.0 SP1 + Firefox 1.5.0.7. This guide is necessary because latest version [1.1.0] of Divx Web Player works *only* with Win2000/XP/2003 OSes. Step-by-step: 1. Download + install *older* Divx Web Player 1.0 [894 KB]: http://download.divx.com/labs/DivXBrowserPluginInstaller.exe More info: http://labs.divx.com/archives/000072.html These links found also here: http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#DRV 2. Make sure UNICOWS.DLL 1.0.4018.0 [245408 bytes] is either in %windir%\SYSTEM [installed by Divx Web Player], or if you need to use a newer version [like UNICOWS.DLL 1.1.3790.0, 258352 bytes placed into %windir%\SYSTEM], then copy the older UNICOWS.DLL 1.0.4018.0 into your browser's Plugins directory/folder. If using Firefox, default is C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\Plugins . 3. Go to a web site with DivX movies, like: http://stage6.divx.com/videos/ and try to play a couple of movies [i used Firefox 1.5.0.7]. 4. Very important: Do *NOT* allow the DivX plugin to download/install/update to newest version 1.1.0 !!! The newest DivX Web Player plugin 1.1.0 does *NOT* work with 9x [95/98/ME] OSes, works only with NTx [2000/XP/2003] OSes. Only if you also use NTx Oses, download + install latest DivX Web Player: http://www.divx.com/divx/webplayer/ File [1.22 MB]: http://download.divx.com/player/DivXWebPlayerInstaller.exe HTH

So far: qdv.dll 6.05.1.904 [Q872901] registers correctly using regsvr32.exe. qdvd.dll 6.05.1.903 [Q836880] does NOT register correctly using regsvr32.exe [probably tied into NTx specific DLLs]. mp4sdmod.dll 10.00.00.3911 [Q895181] registers correctly using regsvr32.exe. eidenk: What player did you use to play DVDs after copying qdvd.dll to %windir%\system ? If you haven't used WMP9 [or WMP9 with 98SE2XP +/- 98SEMP10 enhancements] or a 3rd party app that uses DirectShow APIs, then qdvd.dll is most likely not used by your DVD player [players like PowerDVD +/- WinDVD most likely use their own proprietary APIs]. On the other hand, qdvd.dll + qdv.dll are components of DirectShow, so it is possible that other [3rd party] apps may be able to use them, *if* they are designed to use M$ DirectShow APIs to play DVDs and/or digital video content. I have played a few MPG [DivX] + AVI [DivX] files, and so far they played ok. I have used MPC [Media Player Classic] 6.4.9.0 to play a DVD using qdvd.dll 6.05.1.903. Did NOT work. I guess MPC uses DirectShow APIs to play DVDs. After I restored qdvd.dll 6.05.01.0902 [from DX 9.0c] MPC played the DVD ok. HTH

So far all available updates are here: 95B + 95C OSR 2.x: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#OSR2 95 + 95a OSR1: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#WIN You need to install updates listed above individually, by running each EXE. As far as I'm aware there are no plans to create a 95 Service Pack [or similar project]. HTH

Nice find. Keep up the good work. This REG hack can be used to recompile WMP9 installer [after replacing newer files from XP SP2 + WMP10 (98SEMP10 + 98SE2XP = see links in my sig), and all other current updates/patches, of course ] to make WMP9 install on 98FE. And the original 98FE reg strings can be easily restored at the end of the WMP9 installation from an INF AddReg section. I'll probably do this sometimes next week.

Nice reg trick.I am seriously considering adding this to 98SE2ME option 2 [+ option 1 which implicitly installs option 2]. Added 9-25-2006.Also added newer D*ZIP32.DLL 4.00.04 files from WMP7 Bonus Pack. Also added SUCATREG.EXE 4.90.3000 from WinME setup CD into O2.BAT. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
These are both official updates.IMHO: I don't see the purpose of creating an unofficial update out of a good-working official one, only to add a single help file which can be downloaded on its own. And besides, most people will never need/read that help file anyway. The help file is for programmers. The update is for end-users. That's why M$ posted them as separate downloads. HTH -

MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
I have deleted msrepl40.dll from the RegisterOCXs INF section. Please try to install this file again [1.42 MB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/Q910906.EXE It should work ok now. Thanks for noticing. Q918547 simply installs GDI32.DLL + GDI.EXE 4.10.2227 by copying them to %windir%\system . There is no regsvr32 code in the INF, because GDI*.* files do not contain DLLRegisterServer string. To make this clear: Unofficial Q918547 fix is the *only* 1 you need to install, all others are now obsolete. Although you can install older U918547, it won't do anything [those functions are now built into the newer GDI*.* files installed by unofficial Q918547], will just hog some of your memory and will take some of your CPU cycles, but won't interfere with the newer patch. Therefore all older patches are *not* necessary anymore. HTH -

Sorry, I'm not familiar with [never heard of] modplug tracker.Have you tried modplug tracker without 98SE2ME installed? I don't think it makes any difference. If mmtask.tsk is the culprit, just "kill" it using for example CoolKill [freeware]: http://www.prowebsitemanagement.com/cooltools/coolkill.html and then run mpt again. Then you can test mpt using Win98SE mmtask.tsk from the setup CD [CABs]. Every time after you replace mmtask.tsk you must reboot. To my knowledge these 2 mmtask.tsk files are almost identical except the version number text strings [newer 1 has been updated to read 4.90.3000, the older 1 was 4.03.1998]. I even compared them in wdiff, they are almost identical. I've been using WinME mmtask.tsk for a very long time with 98SE [was 1 of the 1st files I replaced from WinME more than 5 years ago], and never experienced any errors so far. If you find that mpt works better with 98SE mmtask.tsk, please post here your test results, so we can all benefit. This way I know to replace WinME mmtask.tsk with the 1 from Win98SE in 98SE2ME. I've been using GIMP [different versions] with 98SE, with and without 98SE2ME installed, and with WinME. It always worked ok as far as I can recall. Please try the newest version of GIMP available (if not already): http://www.gimp.org/windows/ http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html Hope this helps. -

If IE6 SP1 files are older versions, then it's probably better to use newer ones from WinME CD, even if file dates are older [as I said in previous post, file version is important, file date doesn't matter].98SE2ME already installs all files you listed above, including internat.exe. You can find them listed in o2.bat [open it in Notepad]. Correct file names [respecting 8.3 short filename.extension convention]: sysagent.exe imagehlp.dll Way back when I started replacing files with newer ones from WinME, I used SFC to update to newer versions. Then I started to compare files side by side. To my knowledge 98SE2ME already contains newest files available [except for dzip* + dunzip* DLLs]. If I use older files from 98SE, that means newer ones from WinME are incompatible. READ1ST.TXT should give all details you need: READ1ST.TXT HTH _________________________________ I've also noticed these discrepancies a while back, but didn't pay much attention, because both older and newer date-stamp files worked ok, I have not noticed any errors.I guess MS recompiled files from DCOM98 [with same version] and put them into WinME setup CD. But I have no idea why they have different sizes. ______________________________________ 1. I'm aware of the systray.exe hexed code, but it works only with the 98SE version(s), not with WinME version(s), because the hex string is different.75 1B 52 68 does not match anything in systray.exe 4.90.3002 from WinME. 2. 98SE2ME does not install any mouse files, and that includes vmouse.vxd. If you want to try vmouse.vxd on your 98SE computer, just copy this vmouse.vxd to %windir%\system\vmm32 and then reboot. I don't think this WinME file works with 98SE. HTH -

As I said, the vpatch file [PATMM.EXE] was created from the English moviemk.exe, not from the Italian version, therefore the file md5 checksum is different. You need to either recreate patmm.exe from the Italian moviemk.exe or add patched moviemk.exe ver 1.0.1377.0 from Q262806 directly into Italian 98SE2ME.EXE. If you add moviemk.exe, you need to modify 98.ISS [using Notepad] and replace PATMM.EXE with MOVIEMK.EXE, then recompile 98SE2ME.EXE using this command [example]: D:\INNO\COMPIL32 /CC D:\INNO\98.ISS or by using INNOSET.BAT. Change paths names to match your computer setup. You also need to replace all PATMM instances from o2.bat + o3.bat with code to copy moviemk.exe into C:\Program Files\MoviMakr , same as the other files that are copied using the cscript code [which detects properly movie maker location] in o2.bat. Hope this helps.
