  1. Is the only problem the icons? Try using ResourceHacker to edit them.
  2. >Yes kids, that why your DOS soundcard driver wont run sounds in the windows GUI...This sounddriver is for if you choose to go into dos mode out of windows and run games. Not sure what you are babbling about - my sound card works in DOS AND Windows. >that dont mean that windows98 is built on DOS. Try deleting io.sys and see how far Windows gets.
  3. >all my tweaks are aimed for improving windows not dos as were not in the dos era now Speak for yourself. I use everything from dos thru winxp. And why do you use win9x if not for DOS compatability? Also, if you use win9x, you still load himem, emm386, ifshlp and possibly drvspace. Loading these can still be sped up with udma.sys. FYI win9x is built around dos so dos-specific tweaks are certainly relevant. If you don't want to use it, then don't. No need to whine about it.
  4. Is there anyway to replace the window that appears when you press Ctrl-Alt-Del in 98 SE? I'd like it to run a specific program.
  5. > thats only for dos apps,it doesen't really help windows 9x If you load a large number of programs and TSR's in your config.sys and autoexec.bat, this should help speed up booting Win9X. Personally I load well over a dozen DOS programs - ifshlp, setver, nansi, smartdrv, CD rom drivers, ram disk, doskey, video bios accelerator, kbd accelerator, SB16 emulation, video mode/font settings programs, etc. So far I've installed it but I haven't measured the time difference yet.
  6. Good job wejgomi! Some notes: -Does this overwrite windows\fonts properly? Because a number of them are hidden or something and I had to use attrib or xxcopy to copy over them. -The CAB's contain a lot of duplicates, are you sure you have the newest version of each file? -In windows\system and windows\sysbckup, you install shell.dll, ver.dll, and commctrl.dll. Please consider instead using SHELL.NEW, VER.NEW, and KOMMCTRL.DLL and renaming them - these files are substantially different and I suspect they are the correct ones to use. -Also, it might be necessary to delete these registry keys before running your batch? (I don't know why, but mdgx STRONGLY recommends it. i.e. you might have problems booting if you don't delete them...): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\control\SessionManager\CheckVerDLLs HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\control\SessionManager\WarnVerDLLs Again, there are still these ME-related updates that can be installed and aren't included in your batch file: -The Q280800.exe update for ME contains updated user.exe and user32.dll (copy to \windows\system). -defrag, scandisk, spider solitaire, mspinball, and hwinfo.exe
  7. BTW, I noticed that the XP bonus pack for WMP can be installed on 98 SE. You may need WMP9 installed? (I do.) To install the XP bonus pack, just extract the contents of the WMBonusXP.exe archive and then run setup_wm.exe. You must uncheck "Windows Media Player Skin Importer" or an installation error will occur. Could someone please describe how to install WMP 10 on 98 SE? Thx.
  8. The easiest way to install XP SP2 files on 98 SE is to follow the instructions at mdgx.com. However, instead of extracting selected files from ~260 MB XP SP2 archive, I suggest just using right-click, Open Archive and extracting *EVERYTHING*. Then run mdgx's expndsp2.bat and finally "del *_" to get rid of all the excess files. Delete the subdirectories as well. Delete any junk you added such as expand.exe and expndsp2.bat, or files extracted from shcdocl.zip. You should end up with 64 files which you need to organize into a tree. You can reboot into DOS and use "xxcopy16 /r /h /s" cmmand to install the directory tree. The final tree will look like this: Directory of C:\xpsp2files\Program Files\Windows Media Player . <DIR> 01-08-2005 1:29p . .. <DIR> 01-08-2005 1:29p .. 9. To install ME files on 98 SE, follow these instructions. Caveat: this may blow your system up, so don't do it unless you are prepared to reformat everything. Also, if someone comes up with a batch that uses extract.exe and makes this more automated, that would be great. 1. Insert your ME CD-ROM. 2. Copy from the the CD's win9x folder, e.g. d:\win9x, to c:\mewin9x. You will need about 2 GB free to do all these steps so be careful. 3. Install winzip or winrar or 7-zip or something (I use all of them). Sort the c:\mefiles files by type, select all cabs, right click and extract all. Some files will be overwritten, choose the newest files always, if they are the same date pick the largest file. 4. Run the batch file below to set up the c:\mefiles directory. You will then have files such as c:\mefiles\Windows\System\*.*. Make sure mefiles has exactly 545 files. These are the files that mdgx says are safe. 5. Download the Q280800.exe file. Mdgx.com's site has a link (look for "me ->98" near the top of his page) to get it. Right click and open archive, then extract user.exe and user32.dll. Put these in mefiles\windows\system. You should now have 547 files there. 6. Delete these two registry keys. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\control\SessionManager\CheckVerDLLs HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\control\SessionManager\WarnVerDLLs 7. Get the xxcopy tool. Boot into DOS and run "xxcopy16 /r /s /h c:\mefiles\*.* c:\". (Note: If you get any errors then it didn't copy over hidden windows\fonts files and those aren't the exact right arguments, I maybe forgot one switch.) Now reboot. 8. This doesn't install ME's defrag, scandisk, spider solitaire, and hwinfo. mdgx.com has instructions for those I think. 9. 10. Does SP 2.0b2 contain both MSXML 3.0 SP 5 and MSXML 4.0 SP 2? Will 2.0 final? Thx.
  11. Which is better, 98 SE or ME? Please consider my specific case, not general arguments. I find that 98 SE with the unofficial SP 2.0b2 works fine with my fast, new hardware and loads of different gizmos. I'm using various XP files and will probably through some ME files in per Axcel216's instructions. However, I heard ME is faster and more stable so I thought I'd give it a try. If I use ME, I will need it modified with all of Axcel216's hacks that enable DOS mode. So I want to be able to boot into DOS mode, run batch files using the most obscure DOS arcana, run old DOS games, etc.. Will everything still work? Or am I asking for trouble?
  12. Maybe 2.0 final should have this cool maxcache.reg feature from mdgx's website: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip16.htm (look for "max cache speed") This lets you go beyond the "Network Server" setting under Performance. I am using the "Super Cache" setting myself.
  13. No, 2.0b2 is missing about 5 updates plus a number of hotfixes / newer DLL's.
  14. I prefer 98 SE out of all the Windows OS's and it runs like a dream on my Athlon 64 3400+ 1 GB RAM PC. 98 SE is a bit old but with all of the updates written for it is quite stable. The unofficial SP 2.0b2 does a great job. Almost all hardware works with 98 - digital cameras, scanners, printers, USB drives, etc. Certain Creative Labs sound cards are about the only hardware that doesn't support it. Also, 98 SE is very secure - the only bug I've been hit with is when IE got hijacked by Java scripts (now I use Firefox). XP, on the other hand is bloated, security holes are being discovered there almost every day, and it is sluggish with dozens of services running constantly. XP is also more expensive and has Draconian licensing. Also, I often see bugs in XP - for example: 1. After pressing Ctl-Alt-Del and then clicking to Lock the computer, the windows will all disappear and there's no way to recover. 2. Random files frequently become locked for no apparent reason, requiring a reboot to fix. 3. I've seen XP produce badly corrupt partitions for no apparant reason, requiring a reinstall to fix.
  15. >is the computer ol or new? New. The CPU is Athlon 64 3400+ 2.4 GHz. >Looks like an Insufficient RAM issue. Doubtful. I have 1 GB RAM and the swap file is by itself on a 1 GB primary FAT32 partition at the top of my drive. The swap file is set to vary from 256 MB - 1 GB. BTW, I have a max file cache of 512 MB, I think this is why it gladly buffers 500 or so MB of copying and then starts horribly stuttering (more like freezing). I'm using Ultra ATA 100 (DMA mode 5?) for both of my harddrives, can it not flush the cache in the background? >Establish a dial-up connection=give it time, does it freze before and after making a connection? It freezes once just as it finishes connecting and the dial-up window minimizes. Everything works on my system, there are just nasty pauses. I noticed from using Boot Log Examiner that a lot of hardware-related detection items take 0.56 seconds each, I have no idea what it is doing but it's suspicious and maybe it's related to the stutters when attaching usb harddrives or connecting to the internet. I think the 500 MB caching and then stuttering problem is unrelated because the pauses are so much worse.
  16. My system fails to shutdown about 50% of the time and I have 2.0b2 installed. I am going to partition my 200 GB hd because it takes forever to scandisk it constantly. I don't blame 2.0b2 though, I just thought this was a Win98 problem. Anyone know how to debug this kind of problem?
  17. I use 1 GB DDR 400 in Win 98 SE with 2.0b2 SP and it is very stable. I also use top 2 GB of my disk for swap partition. I recommend not using Creative products though, my Destructive Labs SB Live! Value needs to install in low 4 MB of memory which causes a lot of problems with Win 98 SE. I have to use EMMExclude=A000-FFFF and also I can't install huge ram disk or smartdrv cache without causing SB Live driver problems. BTW, I believe Win98 SE supports only up to 1.5 GB of physical RAM. However, you may be able to create a ram disk which uses up any physical memory you have beyond that, and then use the ram disk as your swap drive. I'm curious if anyone has tried this.
  18. The unofficial 1.6.2 SP for Win 98 SE had a bug that would disable windows update from working. You had to run a few commands like "regsvr" or something to fix it. Just live with it because you are only missing a few minor updates from the windows update site. Or install the unoffical 2.0b2 sp. It does not have the windows update bug and it's been working well for me for a while now.
  19. I have a clean Win 98 SE install with SP 2.0b2 and it still only shuts down properly half the time. I'm going to start flipping a coin to see if there is any correlation.
  20. My Win 98 SE system stutters for seconds at a time. By stuttering, I mean the mouse cursor becomes immobile (sometimes invisible, it seems) and any keys I type won't have an effect until a few seconds later when whatever I typed will suddenly appear. It seems to stutter whenever I do these things: -Establish a dial-up connection -Attach a USB hard drive -Write a large file - it seems to buffer up to 500 MB of writes instantaneously and then thereafter it will lock up for 10 seconds while it actually does the writing. Is there anyway to get rid of these annoying pauses? It's really bad when I'm doing a lot of hard disk-intensive processing because it makes typing or working basically impossible. Hmm I just realized now maybe shrinking the file cache in windows\system.ini *might* help (so there will be a lot of little pauses instead of big huge pauses) but it won't help with things like usb drives or dial-up connections Any ideas?
  21. >> The second step involves using imaging software (like norton ghost) Is there a good freeware alternative to this? I found a dos program called "savepart" but have not tried it yet.
  22. Please help. winbootdir will not die! "set winbootdir=" does not work; it thinks you want to work with a variable called WINBOOTDIR and it leaves winbootdir unscathed. The reason I'm trying to delete the variable is to save memory when loading TSR's - about 64-80 bytes can be saved per TSR. After the TSR's are loaded I want to restore the variable. Any ideas?
  23. If .NET Framework 1.1 is installed, will apps written for .NET 1.0 work? Or should you install both 1.1 and 1.0?
  24. It works for me. Note: apparently because it is a microsoft site, you must use IE, not Firefox to connect.
  25. "One user reported that he have some problems with DirectX Games on a 1.5 GB of RAM system" I only have 1 GB, but I'm using DirectX 9.0c (October release) and have no DX problems. What kind of DX problems where there? Crashes? Bluescreens?
