  1. >In either Windows Exploder or MyCompuker, right-click your drive letter, select >Properties, in the middle-bottom-right of the box click Disk Cleanup, then on the top >click More Options...... That doesn't work It says "Disk Cleanup for SWAP (I:)" and then Under More Options, the only choices are: Windows components - You can free more disk space by removing optional Windows components that you do not use. Installed programs - You can free more disk space by removing programs that you do not use. System Restore - You can free more disk space by reducing the amount of storage used by System Restore. Maybe 98SE2ME has caused this?
  2. The recycle bin is completely disabled on the system. Also, I don't have a "Settings" panel in Disk Cleanup so the posted tip doesn't apply. I'm not sure why I don't have Settings - I have 98 SE, 98 plus!, and 98SE2ME (updated files from ME) installed.
  3. Disk cleanup keeps complaining that my swap partition is full - it's full because the drive is 1 gb and the swap file is 0.99 gb. Is the best way to get rid of this warning to just uninstall disk cleanup?
  4. Any bugs found in 2.0b3 yet? i.e. does 2.0b3 == 2.0 final?
  5. Please help with this annoying problem in 98 se I'm having on one PC. Basically if I leave the computer alone a long time, like 30 minutes, the screen turns black with a cursor in the upper left corner. Almost like it's in DOS mode and trying to shut down, but can't. Anyway there is nothing I can do at this point to restore things. If I press Ctrl-Alt-Del it either reboots or says something like "Press Ctrl-Alt-Del again to reboot your computer". I think this is due to power saving or something and I have no idea how to turn it off. I think it's due to Windows and not BIOS because DOS does not have the problem. I have weird BIOS settings like POS and G/STR2 but I have no idea what they mean. Also, I usually install windows with the /Pj (ACPI enabled) option, but I don't think that's related. Any suggestions will be appreciated
  6. > most companies are using 2000 or XP, Doubtful. Yes, most high-tech US-based companies use XP. However I suspect a ton of companies use 98, 3.1, or even DOS. If MS still supports 98 there must be a decent customer base. > Remote Desktop? No Not true, do a google search for remote desktop 98 or vnc 98, there are freeware solutions for this. FYI just as with IE and WMP sometimes its better to NOT use what is bundled with your OS.
  7. * Why I still use Windows 98/98SE over Windows XP Because XP is a full of security bugs. Because XP is the most popular OS, and therefore has a giant red bulseye on it that attracts viruses, spyware, and hackers. (For same reason I do NOT use Internet Explorer). Because XP is expensive. (Though I believe it's free for me due to super-duper MSDN license. Still I don't want it!) Because XP is bloated and drains system memory and performance! Because I refuse to participate in XP's communist registration scheme. Because 98 has superior backwards compatability. Because I can do everything on 98 - develop software, play games, compose music, surf internet, use digital camera, scanners, and usb hard drives. * My system specs Athlon 64 3400+, 1 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 5900 FX 256 MB RAM, 2 hd (200 gb + 100 gb). * Have you ever tried Windows XP or do you just hate it so much you won't? I have to use it at work unfortunately .
  8. "Rumor has it Microsoft will pull the plug on the oft delayed Longhorn." Source: http://www.fu**edcompany.com Any truth to this?
  9. > http://www.appcontrols.com/ > a program called resource meter FYI this Resource Meter sends out packets. Watch out. Does anyone know of a good free PDF editor?
  10. Try PropertiesPlus: http://www.ne.jp/asahi/cool/kish/ It lets you set all file attributes plus file dates and times.
  11. > set it at min 512- max 4gb. Hopefully that's not bad, esp when upping ram amount?? Hopefully 1.5 gb is not bad, because that might be all you can get. I don't know why, but I can't manually set more than 512 MB swap partition on Win98 SE with my 1 GB RAM system. If I try it just silently switches to "windows automatically controls your swap for you" on that drive. I have the unoffical SP 2.0b2 installed as well as a number of transplanted files from ME and XP SP 2 and the limitation is still there. So my recommendation is to try 1.5 GB total or 512 MB swap partition or whatever is the most that Win 98 SE will allow you to do. You could also try letting Win 98 SE control the swap size and maybe then it can exceed 512 MB swap. I'm not sure. Fortunately for me 1.5 GB is more than enough, especially with the low memory usage of Win 98 SE to begin with. Another interesting thing is that if you have > 512 GB physical memory if you have any problems you can always set MaxPhysPage in system.ini to make Win98 SE think there is only X amount of memory installed. For example, with MaxPhysPage=30000, Win98 SE thinks only 768 KB is installed. If you have a large amount of physical memory, say 2 GB, then you could set MaxPhysPage=40000 to have Windows use 1 GB. Then use XMSDSK (not RAMDRIVE.SYS which has a very limited max size) to create a 1 GB RAM disk. Then you could have Windows create a 1 GB swap file on the RAM disk. Another interesting thing you can do with ram disks in Win 98 SE is to have a drvspace volume mounted on them. This effectively gives you a bigger RAM disk. What I do is have a PKZIP'ped drvspace volume file (if the volume is empty, it will deflate to be extremely small). Then, at boot time, I extract the tiny ZIP file and place the huge drvspace volume file on the ramdisk, then I use "scandisk /mount" to mount the compressed volume from the ram drive. Clarification: it's actually best to PKZIP the drvspace volume twice. For example I have a 16 MB ramdrive volume that compresses to 19 KB after first application of PKZIP and then to 3 KB after second application. Using different pkzip options at the two compression stages I can save a few bytes. FYI, CABSDK with LZX or MSZIP compression proves to be inferior.
  12. > legacy apps shouldn't be supported He asked whether anyone got it to work, not your opinion on whether it should be allowed. Please stop posting unhelpful messages. Thanks.
  13. I use Win98 SE on Athlon 64 3400+ with 1 GB RAM and 512 MB swap partition. It runs fantastic, the CPU is no problem and I use all kinds of hardware - joysticks, printers, digital cameras, usb drives, scanners w/o problems. However If you have >512 MB RAM you must set max disk cache size to 524288 KB or less (I use 128 MB myself). The unofficial Win 98 SP 2.0b2 will automatically fix this for you. I also have a "Destructive Labs" Sound Blaster Live! Value CT4830 which works wonderfully well but can cause major problems if you are not careful. It tends to be greedy with low memory (below 4 MB). Because of this card I have to use EMMExclude=A000-FFFF in my system.ini. Also I limit my smartdrv cache to 8 MB and ram disk (XMSDSK) to only 16 MB.
  14. It could be a RAM chip problem. They are very hard to diangose and programs like memtest86 do NOT always work. Try using 1 RAM chip and try different slots with it, if the crashes increase or decrease it is definitely RAM related. Also Prime95 is a great program which will stress your CPU + RAM and find problems very easily.
  15. "i didnt attempt the wmp 10 conversion " Me neither, its untested and i am frankly scared of it.
  16. I was curious and looked at the .bat and saw it calls "regedit /d" to delete the keys.
  17. Cool. I noticed IZArc cant Test multiple archives simultaneously. Oh well, I'll probably use a combination of winzip+7zip+winace+izarc in the future
  18. These programs are nice but the nagware is annoying. Are there any good alternatives? Sygate Personal Firewall - This is great but asks to register everytime you start - very annoying. (BTW, if I am not connected it makes the system pause noticably every few seconds; even my mouse movement becomes discontinuous.) WinRar - This slow dialog pops up every time I open a rar file. I did not like ZipGenius and found it bloated and buggy. 7-zip is a bit awkward (despite 7z format being great).
  19. I' won't install longhorn right away. I will be afraid of security vulnerabilities for at least the first year. The licensing sounds ugly and I might never accept it. Also I don't want the OS to drain away my system resources. FYI my favorite OS right now is win 98se which runs like a dream with 1 GB ram and 0.5 GB swap partition.
  20. no - you can't overwrite most windows files in windows mode. you have to use dos mode
  21. Beter batch file attached. Notes: -wejgomi's batch didn't work for me. I don't understand how cab chaining works but I had to change a couple cab names to fix it. -I put in the exact cab needed so it should be faster. Will it work on all ME versions? (OEM vs full?) I have no idea. -Extracting multiple files at a time is much faster. I couldn't do too many because of 128-char limit on command-line. -uses shell.new, ver.new and kommctrl.dll not shell.dll, ver.dll, and commctrl.dll -nice warnings / error checking -Still doesn't handle Q280800.exe update from ME with updated user.exe and user32.dll (copy to \windows\system), defrag, scandisk, spider solitaire, mspinball, or hwinfo.exe. Sorry 98SEToMe.bat
  22. >restarting in msdos mode is tricky Not at all. Go to Start and choose Shutdown, Restart in MS-DOS mode. Or press F8 while booting up. >i don't use 16bit or dos apps now,i have alternatives Good for you. I use lots of DOS and 16-bit apps.
  23. I use WinME defrag. I also use Diskeeper lite - it does a good job at fixing fragmentation, but unfortunately it won't make everything contiguous. Having contigous data is very important if you need to use a data recovery tool.
  24. Try DriveRescue. It's freeware. I highly recommend it!
  25. >but if u mix the files from ME which are part ogf 2000's enhancements, with windows >98se, u get a stable os rite? In theory yes. In practice, my computer blew up. Specifically, every partition was corrupted simultaneously and I lost a number of files. Windows bluescreened continously on bootup. I would have lost dozens of GB if I didn't have DriveRescue. I'm not sure why this happened. It's either from ME files, XP SP2 files, or some organic art screensaver I downloaded. It might have been the latter - when I installed the screensaver it said it was updating DX components, which is strange since I'm using Dx 9.0c Dec 2004.
