  1. Support for memory speeds above ddr 400 were added in the rev E CPUs. http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2469
  2. What make is that 250 watt?
  3. One quick question. When installing 98/98se, were you installing it to a sata drive hooked up to the onboard sata ports, or using a pata drive? Im curious to know if dos and win98 worked with nvidia's native sata. I havent the slightest idea, other than google. The only thing I can really say (from what Ive read) about nvidia chipsets and 98se, is that everyone reports that nvidia's 98se drivers suck wind. Ive never read anything anywhere about someone running 98se on a nvidia board, and actually being satisfied with the results. Im not ready to give up on 98se support just yet either, so Ive been looking at s754 boards with sis and ali/uli chipsets. Sis and uli AFAIK still have 98se drivers available. Unfortunately no manufacturer has stepped up with a decent sis board, so it looks like my chipset options are limited to uli. Via also has 98se drivers available, but Im not willing to put up with their neutered PCI bus any longer.
  4. Besides the msmouse.vxd how did the 98se install go? Im guessing you probably know that nvidia doesnt even offer 98se drivers for nforce4. Nforce3 is the cut-off point for 98se drivers, atleast on their site. Are you going to try force the nforce4 drivers to install on 98se or something? Also, what is the rest of your hardware config like?
  5. For getting into the BIOS, take a look at On a Compaq computer, how do I access BIOS Setup?. Hopefully one of those keys will do it.
  6. Well if it is trying to read a cd and there isnt a cd in the drive, thats why there is an error. If you are still wondering about burning an iso image, I suggest giving the XP powertoy ISO Recorder a try. It is small and simple, because the only thing it does is allow you to burn ISO images.
  7. For the same price you could get a socket 754 setup w/ 64bit enabled sempron. Atleast that way you still have room to upgrade the CPU.
  8. Win98 doesnt have a 30GB partition size limitation. MS fdisk has an artificial limitation in which you cant create a fat32 partition larger than 32GB. I just use free fdisk to get around that. I think the disk managers in 2K/XP have the same artificial limitation.
  9. Why DOS 6.1? I still use DOS a lot but I use 7.x (whatever ver came with 98se). You can still use DOS 6.1 executables with it if you want to, but using the 7.x command.com (plus other basic files) gives you access (including bootability) to/from FAT32 partitions.
  10. What if any service pack does the XP pro disc youre using have? If it doesnt have any then that could be why. 48bit LBA wasnt enabled until SP1 or SP1a.
  11. It should probably be in the neighbourhood of 35-50 celcius. Does your system have any case fans exhausting hot air or taking in cool air? In a modern system like yours, at bare minimum you should have a 80-120 mm exhaust fan. Whoever did build it for you, I would ask them what type of thermal paste they used, and also ask what make/model the CPU heatsink/fan are. If it is just the retail HSF than comes with the retail version of the processor you should be just fine at stock speeds. On the other hand, if the builder chose an OEM version of the chip (doesnt come with a HSF) and instead opted for some cheap after market HSF, that could also be a problem. One other question about the problems you described in your first post. Did these problems occur from day 1, or did it take a few days/weeks for it to start happening?
  12. It supports ATA, and AFAIK the only real difference between S-ATA and the older P-ATA is that between the hard drive and the motherboard, data is transferred in series rather than in parallel. I cant think of any reason why the OS would be concerned about such things. S-ATA is nothing new, it is just an evolutionary step of ATA. Speaking from experience with silicon image S-ATA controllers, 98se doesnt need any software and/or driver to enable S-ATA (DOS doesnt either). The software you can (but dont have to) install after is only for management and monitoring purposes, not for functionality. Many people get confused here because 2K/XP require drivers, and they just assume that 98 does too. I think the difference in drivers is because 2K/XP communicates with hardware through HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) and 9x communicates with hardware through BIOS. Not to get your hopes up too high just yet, I wasnt able to get 98se running on a sis180 S-ATA controller. DOS and win2K worked fine, but for some reason it would not work with 98se using APM or ACPI (BSOD during install). I have only had one run-in with that controller about a year ago. The only thing I can tell you about it is that it works fine in DOS (thats what I used to image one of the S-ATA drives). To be 100% certain that it functions properly in 98se, you will probably have to find someone who has actually installed 98se on the via 8237 w/ S-ATA drive.
  13. Thanks. I will try it out and report back.
  14. If there is a script to close that stupid second buy menu I would be interested, but other than that I just havent felt the need to use any. What other games provide CS style action without the lame hitboxes?
  15. Nah, Ive never used any script for CS. I can buy everything I need in 2 seconds using nothing but the keyboard.
  16. For 98se compatibility I think you might want to go with an SiS of VIA chipset. From what Ive read (no hands on experience mind you) nvidia's 98se drivers leave much to be desired. SiS makes a very capable chipset, but motherboard manufacturers tend to keep them relegated to budget boards for some reason. VIA's native S-ATA controller in the 8237 southbridge also has problems with S-ATA II devices, so all isnt rosey in their camp either.
  17. I fully agree. Another thing that has always plagued me since I started playing CSS is the second buy menu that pops up occasionally and cant be closed. Im suprised it hasnt been fixed after this length of time.
  18. KNOPPIX_V3.9-2005-05-27-EN.iso This is the file you want I think.
  19. Im glad I could be of help, but when it comes to modding/flashing video cards unfortunately I cant offer any assistance. I recommend you start another thread for that.
  20. That PS should be adequate. You should check to see what your temps and voltages are like at idle and load, if you havent already. A program like motherboard monitor or speedfan would let you do that.
  21. So how do you install Windows? Without a floppy, and without some kind of slip CD, you should not be able to install windows. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The native nvidia S-ATA on nf4 ultra/sli boards do not require drivers during windows installation.
  22. Wouldnt that p4 2.26 GHz be a northwood core? The celeron D is prescott based.
  23. If you are overclocking that 9800pro the arctic silver should help you eek out a few more MHz on the GPU vs standard white thermal grease. If you have never used arctic silver before, take close look at the application instructions for AS ceramique. One thing to note is that it will take a while for the arctic silver to set in and reach its full potential for thermal conductivity, so dont expect to see the full benefit right off the bat.
  24. If you run those two 120GB maxtors in RAID 0 they should be faster in most cases than a single 10K raptor. Ill also second the dfi nf4 ultra-d that ripken204 recommended.
  25. If he cant run in dual channel mode it wont be because of the speed difference. Again, you would simply have to run all the RAM at the speed of the slowest module.
