Well PerigeeCopy, I just tested for a day. I don't like it. Besides the highlight thing you name, there a few more, the most important for me is its inhability to undo. Also it shows the dialog even for small files, and overall initialization feels slow, a bit like what happened with Teracopy. I'm back to default XP's, it's not that horrible... I use taskbar shuffle, but I think I should turn it off as Im already using 7plus, it's an Autohotkey based utility pack. I almost disable all the scripts in the application, but leave a handful bunch. MMB for closing windows on taskbar or title bar, wheel mouse on taskbar for volume, Double click on taskbar for task manager, RMB on title bar for always on top, MMB when file selected for file(s) properties, etc It's a new experience, I also use a useful script for the file renaming feature of 7. On Firefox I always use MMB for opening links and close tabs, now I don't know if that's a built in feature.
-
let's check that, looks promising. I tested like a dozen of them and each had something I didn't like, as for Teracopy it had issues on my system, check this video. Lately I had been keeping an eye to UltraCopier, kind of a mix between Teracopy and supercopier. I don't want to turn this into an app discussion but as a give back, I recommend Everything as a file searcher. XP is far from perfect, but in my opinion is the best, add some useful applications like these and it gives me perfection placebo.

sorry, I am quite noob at networks. I think it's multiband, as per this link I remember seeing the 5Ghz option, now with TKIP the dropdown arrow is disabled (maybe it never was available?) Bandwith is 20Mhz and 40Mhz , set as Auto. On my connection, on the Intel utility it shows g and n. I actually have it set to use a,g, and n on the card. In the router it says "Mode: 802.11b+g+n" I'm using another version of stock firmware, official but from other country and version (which was said to work better) For fixing this issue I tweaked this on the card. I don't know if that's what you refer, also on my router it says Transmit Power 100%, I don't think I ever touched this. I don't quite understand your last question, sorry edit: It dropped again, I grabbed the log into a csv file, tell me if you need it.

I have been more than 2 months trying to track an issue with wifi, it randomly disconnects, I couldn't relate it to any reason blindly, more often when CPU intense tasks, but also happen when just reading or writting on notepad for example. I use a huawei-hg556a router and an Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN card. Using WPA-AES. I was getting the 1002 and 1003 ID DHCP event error on Windows. I tried to disable firewall, disable b mode on wifi, set channel to auto... Then I checked Intel's own logger and saw the next message before the disconneciton: "RSN multiple first message" I then tried to change from AES to TKIP encryption, but it didn't fix it. After some googling I tried this solution but this morning it fell again. I'm out of ideas and don't know what else to try. I'm on a Laptop and my router is just 3 meters away. Resetting the router just fix it for that moment, the connection drops afterwards as well...

I remember changing to XP when trying to capture some video with Windows 2000 and having performance problems, somebody on mirc recommended me XP, and it was like night and day. The problem with microsoft and all their versions after XP is they lost their focal point, they went from a well balanced looks plus efficiency, to just looks and bloat, (cutting some options on the way). It started from the first screenshot I saw ("jeeeez looks like playskool crap") and it got worse when I saw the move/copy dialog, the "bread crumbs", the removal of the inverse selection, the winsxs folder getting bigger, all the crazyness with permissions, the tree list bug, the ribbon interface, etc. The only thing I miss from 7 is DX11, nothing else, but as I don't game with computers I'm fine. Also I would like a better file copier for XP or explorer in general. I guess I will move from XP when I start to miss drivers for my devices or lack of support for certain hardware features. Most probably to Ubuntu, hopefully very late in time.

-X- In your page KB2707511 links to KB2676562. Is that right?
-
Yes I know autoruns. But my question is about the bug. Also happens with safe boot. Is it only me?
-
Is it only me? or does it also happen to you? Is this some kind of misterious known Windows bug no body knows how to fix? : /
-
I edited the post so I can gather some questions nobody knows to answer, probably not even microsoft people. It's some kind of a second version of my previous similar thread. 1) why booting after a safe boot, or some modifications in msconfig yields some missing tray icons (wifi, Comodo Firewall, AVG antivirus...) 2) How can I tell XP that my shell and all icons are sRGB, so a proper conversion can be done to my WCG based monitor profile? 3) How can I remove folder thumbnails? and I repeat; ONLY folder (icon) thumbnails, when in thumbnail view mode? 4) How can I fix the DHCP 1003 error that disconnects my wifi? it happens randomly, but more oftenly when some intense tasks (rendering, browsing by images in google, etc) 5) Latest versions of Visual C++ Redistributables? (or why some programs won't work except using older still bugged versions)

Don't install the chipset drivers, it's not strictly necessary AFAIK and it has a bug, in Hardware Devices Manager when you click on properties for the DMA option, etc the advanced tab gets missing.

.NET Framework for Windows NT 5.x (2000/XP/2003)
Dogway replied to tomasz86's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
thank you! I finally didn't make the silent installer because the SNM tool is outdated and requires some modifications that I unknow. Also I'm not sure whether it would shorten the .net installation time since I read it just executes at T-13 install (so no real slipstream is performed in any case). I post the updated list: (Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1) (with this you don't need v1.0) (Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 KB867460-X86) (Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 KB2572067-X86) (Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 KB2604044-X86) Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (autoinstalls 2.0 SP2, and 3.0 SP2, 3.5 SP1 too) Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 KB958481-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 KB979909-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 KB2604092-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 KB2656352-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 KB2656369-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 KB958483-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 KB977354-v2-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 KB982168-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 KB2604110-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 KB2656407-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 KB958484-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 KB953595-x86 (can't find) Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 KB963707-x86 *(includes NET Framework Assistant 1.0 for Firefox) Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 KB982524-x86 (also includes a fix for .NET 2.0) Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 KB2604111-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 KB2657424-x86 (+3.5 SP1 Language pack if wished) (Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0) (patch list to do) edit: fixed two 3.5 entries that were really 3.0, below, updated list. -
Ok, I found StyleBuilder, is this a good application? Can anyone suggest me any tutorials? I post a screenshot demonstrating that the menu bar are composed of images not flat colors. A good way would be to just grab all the bmp and tone them down in photoshop or any other program, but many of them are diffcult to guess what they are without any kind of tut...
-
Yes, that is the same if I choose to change it through the GUI. The problem is that Visual Styles seem to use png images for the menu bar colors, thus it ignores whatever changes you do to the regedit or the GUI.
-
Hello, it's been like half a year since I've been wanting to do this. I tried to look for a nice Visual Style for XP and I already found around 40 nice looking ones but all of them have the menu bar too bright, that's why I haven't installed any yet. I would like to know how can I change the color of the menu bar only. The body of the window (the white background in notepad for example) can be changed easily from the windows own appearence dialogs, and I guess the menu bar fonts can be changed from there as well, but how do I change the menu bar colors? I just need a darker tone. I tried several softwares but all of them are bulky, junkware, crapware, payware, etc. Thank You!!

.NET Framework for Windows NT 5.x (2000/XP/2003)

.NET Framework for Windows NT 5.x (2000/XP/2003)
Dogway replied to tomasz86's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
KB953595 and KB977354-v2 are in Explorer09's list in his post, that's why I added them He also mentioned about NDP20SP2-KB976569 being superseeded by KB2572073 in this other post. So, what should we do? -
Thank you. Yes, I was already using OnePiece's tool for that : ) edit: btw I found some useful information on WPF: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/FirefoxWPFAndXBAP.aspx It just talks about the browser extensions, and not too much on the benefits for the stand alone applications. I think I can get rid of them for firefox, although not too sure about the service. I have it setted "not started" and automatic, but after a while it initializes itself, so I must have some application that makes use of it, acrobat probably but not sure...

Nice read. I extended my read with the "official" note on the microsoft side http://blogs.technet.com/b/srd/archive/2009/10/12/ms09-054.aspx All the latest official updates state that it is safe: http://blogs.technet.com/b/srd/archive/2009/10/12/ms09-054.aspx http://blog.mozilla.com/security/2009/10/16/net-framework-assistant-blocked-to-disarm-security-vulnerability/ http://shaver.off.net/diary/2009/10/18/update-net-framework-assistant-clickonce-support-unblocked/ What it depicts is that the .NET Framework Assistant add-on and the WPF plugin are related, and that they don't need the bugfix because it was a "false alarm" (?). However they didn't mention anything about IE8 being secure as you can see in their microsoft blog post footnote: http://blogs.technet.com/b/srd/archive/2009/10/12/ms09-054.aspx So IE8 still needs the bugfix through the KB2647516 hotfix. Is it true? If so then I guess you are including it in your addon. I ask because I'm building it by myself for Spanish OS. But I still wonder what is WPF for, I read it is to make some web applications GUI more dinamic... I also read the Presentation Font Cache is to make a fonts prefetch for some programs which makes the launch and handling faster, I did search for programs that makes use of it and all of them looked somewhat bloatware... . All in all, at some point Microsoft didn't seem too concerned about turning the thing off so that makes me think that it's not a very useful feature(?) Do you think is better to directly disable the "Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache 3.0.0.0" service?
-
First and foremost, do I need Windows Presentation Cache? And/or does Firefox (or other web browser) need its plugin? I have read several pages but still can't make up my mind, information is very technical. In case I need it, the question is the next. The WPF plugin for firefox has a bug documented in the MS09-054 bulletin. Its hotfix is ultimately superseeded by KB2647516 which is a "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer", and it comes in 2 flavours: WindowsXP-KB2647516-x86-ENU.exe and IE8-WindowsXP-KB2647516-x86-ENU.exe. Let's say I use both IE8 and firefox which one do I install so it fixes the WPF bug and updates the security files of IE8? and another one, if I am going to add IE8 as an addon do I need to slipstream IE8-WindowsXP-KB2647516-x86-ENU.exe to the IE8 executable for the addon creation, or just install WindowsXP-KB2647516-x86-ENU.exe as a normal hotfix in nlite? which one will fix both things?

.NET Framework for Windows NT 5.x (2000/XP/2003)
Dogway replied to tomasz86's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
So is this the right order after a 3.5 SP1 install? Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 KB958481-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 KB979909-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 KB2518864-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 KB2572073-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 KB2633880-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 KB2656352-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 KB958483-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 KB958484-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 KB963707-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 KB982168-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 KB982524-x86 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 KB2657424-x86 (+3.5 SP1 Language pack) I would probably make an add-on, or integration to XP install, as installing 3.5 SP1 with its KB alone takes up more than half an hour to complete. -
Yes, by default I use details too, except occasionally when I need to organize images, etc and set to thumbnail view. I'm not sure why it happens. Maybe something is enabled in the background when I was setting up options in nlite. Although I didn't add or remove any setting without having at least a second look to each. Or probably by enabling,/disabling the folder task panel on left of the windows. Basically what happens is that when I put some images to a folder, the folder automatically sets itself as a "Photo Album" type of folder. When I think "Documents" type of folder is the preferred option for simply blank folder icon. I think msfn is the best place to ask about Windows issues that's why if I don't get any answer here I probably wouldn't get it anywhere else. The problem is the thread was moved to the nlite section so I'm not sure now if my questions would get well noticed as before. I have this registries: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell] "WFlags"=dword:00000000 "Status"=dword:00000001 "Mode"=dword:00000004 "vid"="{137E7700-3573-11CF-AE69-08002B2E1262}" "FolderType"="NotSpecified" "Col"=dword:ffffffff "ColInfo"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,fd,df,df,fd,0f,\ 00,04,00,20,00,10,00,28,00,3c,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,03,00,\ 00,00,5e,01,60,00,90,00,78,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,03,00,00,\ 00,ff,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags\AllFolders\Shell] "WFlags"=dword:00000000 "Status"=dword:00000001 "Mode"=dword:00000004 "vid"="{137E7700-3573-11CF-AE69-08002B2E1262}" "FolderType"="NotSpecified" "Col"=dword:ffffffff "ColInfo"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,fd,df,df,fd,0f,\ 00,04,00,20,00,10,00,28,00,3c,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,03,00,\ 00,00,5e,01,60,00,90,00,78,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,03,00,00,\ 00,ff,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00 But still every folder setting is being stored inside "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags" with its FolderType=PhotoAlbum It seems XP doesn't have the NotSpecified type of argument, anyhow I tested with Documents instead but it changes nothing. This is the knowledge base from microsoft, but it doesn't say much either: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=812003 I think this one talks a bit more about it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/176882 And this is an annoying workaround: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1091585947 Another good thing to look would be how to force the Save As dialog to be always in details view...

UPDATE: 7. While the Visual C++ Redistributable version depends on the demanding program, hotfixes seems to be attached to the generation of the redistributable. For curiosity I runned Belarc Advisory tool to test my system integrity and it reported only one missing hotfix for the redistributables (I have installed 2005, 2 versions of 2008, and 2010), it was KB2518864 for 2008 SP1 version. So I assume that is the only hotfix that exists for all the Visual C++ redistributables. EDIT: After I installed it it created another entry for Visual C++ 2008 with version 9.0.30729.6161 so I guess there are not hotfixes, but updated (sub) versions. I might try to uninstall my other 2 entries 30729.17 and 30729.4148. 3. I got hooked into AutoHotkey because I wanted to do other things as well, like excluding extension highlight when F2 over a filename. What I discovered is that it doesn't need to have AutoHotkey installed. You can compile the scripts to self executable .exe, and run them in another computer. I compiled 2 useful scripts with the help of the people over the AutoHotkey forums. BetterRename.exe-> Highlights only the filename (excluding extension) for fast renaming when F2. View Modes.exe -> For Spanish OS only. Converts View Modes to shortcuts as Alt+Letter. Letter is depicted in the menu Ver when you press Alt+V. That is Alt+d for details, Alt+v for vista en miniatura, Alt+m for mosaico, Alt+t for Lista, etc. They take each around 5mb per process, so consider if they are worth or not. edit: Now I also added VolumeOSD by Rajat, which makes possible to adjust Windows Volume using the Win Key + arrows. The good thing is that now I have 3 useful scripts in one .exe and only taking 5Mb of process (instead 15Mb before). Grab this new one, but mind you that View Modes works only in OS in Spanish: ExplorerEnhacePack.exe 2. I'm still very interested on this one. Actually is the one I'm more interested in because it deals with performance. So I make a recall if someone can help me on this one. 10. I discovered 3dcc!! Exactly what I wanted. More pleasing look with no affected performance hit. I used this 3dcc file from introduktion user as a template. And modified it a bit for more useability, (easier to read) Grab it if you want: DarkDog.3dc Thanks!

Ok, I think I now know what you thought I was asking. No, that option is called "Files and Folders"-> don't cache thumbnails. And I already have this enabled since long ago. This is not what I mean. I want to disable specificaly the folder icon thumbnails, when I swicth to thumbnail mode. I just want to see a clean yellow folder, it's not aesthetics but everytime I change to thumbnail mode every single folder asks the hard drive to read whatever images it has inside, thus the consequent HDD wear. I have only seen one, two at most, persons asking about this in my few dozens search on this issue, and no solutions of course. 8. I've been making tests on a VM. I changed the bmp 1 and 4 of ntoskrnl.exe and the bootscreen shows correct for a fraction of time, then I guess when the progress bar comes in the colors switch very ugly. For testing purposes I changed all the bitmaps to the same color table but it behave the same, so I guess the problem is the internal color table that must be changed in some way to comply to my image color table or just use the limited default color table for my images. Here is my progress bar bmp

2. Sorry to bother but I'm just in front of the tweaks page in nLite and can't find that option. Where do you say live system is? it is not shown in that picture.
