No, its normal. If you're signed in to Windows Messenger, it has to open a port to transfer data to the Messenger servers. Same applies for any app that uses the Internet to function. Don't worry.

ZoneAlarm got a lot of PR from Steve Gibson who recommended it from his GRC site, hence the high number of downloads. You should try out all the freeware firewalls before sticking to one. Those are ZoneAlarm, Kerio, Sygate, and Outpost. Please use the edit button instead of three seperate replies in future!

No, sorry. I cannot give copies of the site away due to copyrights by the original owner. It won't be long before its up though!

SP1 Final for Windows Server 2003 will probably be finished somewhere around early 2004.

They're both different. Norton Antivirus 2002/2003 is the home version and Symantec AntiVirus Corporate is the business version:

For starters, I didn't like the new GUI that was introduced in ZoneAlarm 3.x, I used to use ZoneAlarm before then switched over to Kerio. ZoneAlarm's handling of ICS was terrible, never worked 100% whereas Kerio does the job. Kerio also makes precise rules on applications and does them better than ZoneAlarm. One example is when I discovered edonkey uses a wider port range than those mentioned on the edonkey site, ZoneAlarm blocked those outgoing requests, but with Kerio you can set edonkey to use TCP/UDP on *all* ports. More good features of Kerio is that it gets MD5 checksums on files and alerts you if its been tampered with, and also shows you a detailed list of current open connections to the Internet, and their speeds (no more netstat in command prompt!)

Corporate has a smaller memory footprint, different GUI (simple and uglier, but we prefer it over the retail, which requires sunglasses to view ) Corporate seems to be a very strong stable version, and the fact its made for businesses makes us feel more protected against viruses

I think 'stands' are those small components that keeps the motherboard slightly away from the casing to prevent static (or getting your mobo fried). I've not built a PC from scratch before so I don't know.

Well, they don't call it a Beta for nothing!

Known issues with Windows 2000 SP4: Win2K SP4 has the following known problems and concerns that you should be aware of. • Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE): As with Win2K SP3, SP4 has IE problems that control whether SP4 appears in the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel applet. If you install SP4, then install IE, SP4 doesn't appear in the Add/Remove Programs list. If this happens and you want to remove SP4, you need to go to the Spuninstall directory and manually run the spuninst.exe utility. • Hotfix conflicts: Microsoft has released 33 hotfixes to selected customers, and these hotfixes aren't compatible with Win2K SP4. Although these hotfixes don't prevent installation of SP4, you must install the new post-SP4 version to ensure the hotfix functions properly. SP4's setup utility is aware of all 33 hotfixes, won't install service pack files that conflict with files in any of these hotfixes, and will warn you that you need to install the updated versions. You'll find a list of the hotfixes you need to update in the Microsoft article "Some Windows 2000 Hotfixes May Cause a Conflict with Service Pack 4 for Windows 2000" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822384). The post-SP4 versions are available from Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS). • Symantec's Norton Personal Firewall and Norton Internet Security 2001: SP4 is incompatible with both security products. If you install SP4 on a system running either of these utilities, IE times out when you browse a Web page, and Microsoft NetMeeting might take several minutes to accept incoming calls. Symantec has updates for both products that eliminate these incompatibilities. The last paragraph could probably apply for Speed Disk as well, there might be an update.

You can stop the preview feature by going to this key and changing the default value: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler] then double-click (default) which is set to equal {87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E} and change that to blank as in nothing.

Some of the FA311 cards that were manufactured were faulty and contained an incorrect model number in its BIOS. There is a BIOS flasher patch for the FA311 available on the Netgear site which you can put onto a bootable floppy disk. It's worth trying out anyway, because the flasher won't proceed if your FA311 BIOS is not faulty.

Yeah, I can see what you mean. We will start working on including specific rules to the header of all the threads in a forum, and the new Warning System feature in the new IPB 1.2 software will come into effect too once the forum software has reached final code status.

In regard to the ongoing rubbish and immature posts from some of our new members this week, we expect our long-term members to ignore these kind of threads or reply to bring it back on-topic and point out the error of their ways. We also expect our members to use the 'Report a Post to a Moderator' feature if you feel offended by the post in question. This will allow an active mod/admin to edit/delete the offending post.

I have an FA311 Netgear card, and it works in Win2k3 when you install the XP drivers from the v1.30 package from Netgear's site.

Because you don't have MSN Messenger 6 installed?
