  1. Virus! If you connect to the net without a firewall on broadband you will get this within minutes. I always thought it is Blaster Worm but may be mistaken.
  2. If you have updated to SP2 the USB drivers may have not been updated, this is an issue with SP2. Goto control panel, system, hardware, device manager Look at the USB ports etc and see if any have yellow question marks on, if so right click and select update driver, the driver should update and then see what happens.
  3. The file is probably not there! However, I recently had an issue where parts of pages were missing. Try it from someones elses computer (if you can) if the file is missing its missing, if its there the problem is your end.
  4. Sounds like a great project, and the thing that springs to mind is dynamic site - PHP & MySQL!! Managing rent accounts etc online is a great example of what a database can do on a site, however paying online means (probably) you would need a way of collecting card payments such as a merchant account, but of course this can be done with paypal. I always recommend optimal payments for online payment processing http://www.optimalpayments.com/ they also do direct debits as well. This does cost to setup and to use. Don't stop their, what about a repair log? Obviously you can provide information for the residents on almost any topic. The best way forward would be to note down things you do manually to your tenants and then see if this can be automated online, probably can! Obviously you can use the site to advertise any vacancies that arise etc. In short you are limited by your imagination. Good luck and post the URL so we can have a look!!
  5. As far as I am aware most copy protection systems means the CD does not conform to the 'red book' standard that defines what a CD is. Once you go outside of the standard you risk your CD becoming unreadable as readers only conform to the standard.
  6. Of course in this case I would advise reporting this to the authorities.
  7. Another genre of sites to avoid: Gamers Cheat Sites! And thats advice above about keeping youur machine running smoothly is spot on. I do and it is easy to spot a slow down, strange behaviour etc.
  8. Two ways, unplug computer from the phone socket or leave computer connected, just don't turn it on! I have always believe there is no real way, and if there was, I always assume the hacker is one step ahead looking for the next flaw to exploit so 'total nail down' would not be for long. Apart from the usual security, firewall, AV etc the biggest weapon you have in your arsenal is Common Sense!! Just watch what you do, emails, attachments, sites you visit. Don't give them a way in and you don't have to worry about getting them out. I would recommend a router with firewall built in. I have one and wouldn't be without it BUT do not let a false sense of security arise.
  9. Try this http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;307545 I have used this method serval times and it works.
  10. Yes, thats right. I use a Belkin ADSL modem router and the setting on this is 'Lease Time'. i have mine set forever but this can be set as short as 30 mins.
  11. This is just my home setup for a desktop and a laptop. There does not appear to be anyother wireless networks in the area and I think I would notice in the car parking area with a pringle can and a laptop! The range outside the building is pretty limited as well, went wandering with the laptop!
  12. Well on modem fireall alone now since 8th Oct, no problems whatsoever! Thanks for your advice but i think all is well!
  13. When you connect to the WLAN your system should realize a key is needed and ask you for it. This is when the key should be entered. On XP just view wireless networks and then connect to it. I really don't understand why this person insists on doing it themselves, if they are allowing you access to the network why not just give you the key. This is really sounding like a 'human issue' if they don't know what they are doing then allow someone who knows do it.
  14. The easy way is talk to that person and ask them what the WEP key is! I have a wireless modem router with WEP enabled, i can actually log into the router and view the WEP key, perhaps try this. Once you got it, all should be ok. This is why documenting such things, while boring, is essential.
  15. I am always wary of the figures quoted by bios hardware monitors, don't take them as gospel, as i have found myself in the past.
  16. SP2 may have broken your sound cards device drivers. Visit you sound card manufacturers website to see if there is an updated driver or for advice.
  17. Put simply prefetching is getting something that may be needed soon before its needed so that when its needed its there to increase performance. Usually idle time is used to do this beit a CPU doing it or a web browser doing it the principal is the same.
  18. Just what i was going to say - no really! B)
  19. Good one! Not sure, does you son login to his own account or is there just one 'global' account for the whole family?
  20. Get hijack this and post the log here, not sure of the link - google it
  21. Sorry, here is the patch for xp+sp1 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en
  22. Are you running sp2? If not try this http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;835732 for a patch, if you have sp2 then this patch has been applied. I will keep thinking!
  23. Search your hard disk for winlogon.exe, the real one is in c:\windows\system32 and service pack folders. If you have any entries anywhere else such as c:\windows then it is a virus or something. A quick google says its virus related, and not always detected. There seems to be a huge variation of symptoms.
