  1. Hi Had nothing but trouble with sp2 and my usb modem, and the VIA chipset. Under some circumstances the USB drivers do not update under sp2. To resolve this go into system via control panel and then onto device manager. Open up the usb tree and right click and select update driver on each entry in the usb tree, the drivers should update. I believe that sp2 effects the power the usb port can supply, especially such as a high powered device, such as a modem. If you experience the problem after updating the drivers, i think now the only way to go (until microsoft decide to put it right!) is to use a powered hub. Also there are ongoing issues with VIA chipsets and USB, check out the via support website for more info.
  2. System restore creates checkpoints at certain intervals, could it be this? To be honest i think it may just be everyday xp doing what xp does and the real problem is the size of the disks and space left. 500mb is a pityfull amount of freespace, and will be affecting the performance of your machine. Even though you say d: is not affected the everyday requirements of xp may just be gobbling up your (limited) freespace and you just notice it more as 200mb of 500mb is a lot but 200mb of 40GB is not a lot and not noticable under normal use. Run diskclean up and get a new hard disk!
  3. The NTFS file system supports the compression of files, the file is simply compressed and lives in the same directory as it did before it was compressed, same file name and extension. In effect the compression is 'transparent' it is stored on the disk compressed but if you access it, it is decompressed 'on the fly' and is used as if the file was not compressed. You can spot compressed files in Explorer as they are shown in blue when look at the files in details view.

  5. Thanks, good article!
  6. Hi Need my hand holding! Currently on Pipex (ISP OK) using a Speedtouch 330 (Not OK). Having Power/Speedtouch/VIA chipset issues. I have a wireless ad-hoc network for a laptop to connect to net. Decided to purchase a Wireless ADSL Modem / Router, 54g variety. Just really worried about performance issues and want reassuring (I know its going to be OK). I know the wireless network is many many times faster than my 512 service but would be interested in any stories of similar plans and any pitfalls encountered. I live in a flat and considering placing modem / router near the main bt socket which is central to layout not at the end of the living room extension. Cheers! Dave
  7. Simply boot from your Win XP CD and just follow it through until you get the bit where it searches for current installations. It will list your current windows install and select this and select to repair it, it looks like its doing a clean install but its not. When all is done your windows machine will boot and everything will be intact, however you may need to reinstall service packs etc. There is prob an easier way to do this as someone will no doubt point out,but i have done this on a number of occasions no problems
  8. Hi, A bit of help pls! Can anyone tell me if the Message History is on or off by default. This saves a record of any instant messages sent and received. As far as i can see it is off by default, but would like second opinion. Is there a quick way to reset messenger to its default state as well. Thanks
  9. Do you use or have you used any tweak progams such as TweakUi, looks like you lost some registry info about the recycle bin.
  10. Further to this all. I have decided the problem lies in my motherboard and its VIA chipset and the power being drawn by the modem. An external powered hub solves the prooblem. It appears that as the modem draws 500ma some motherboard and chipsets do not fully allow this and an safe guard kicks in. This would explain why at boot it just does not work, with everything cold this is when it draws most current. Hope this helps.
  11. Been looking about, think this may be the answer http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;870893 Hope this helps anyone else having similar problems or problems with other USB devices.
  12. Sorry for the title! Considering myself told! Yes, have latest drivers from speedtouch, still the same. Really starting to think its motherboard & SP2 related as have tried every possible software solution i can think of. Its MSI 6738, also considering putting modem in powered hub. I understand the modem draws the max 500ma from the port so thinking do not use power from motherboard but the powered hub, does this sound sensible? Its very strange as until SP2 all ok but now nothing but problems. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  13. Hi, Has anyone else had problems with their speedtouch modem after installing xp sp2. Since installing this i have to unplug the modem and plug it back in again to get the modem to work. On a boot it is just not seen. Worked fine before sp2. That will teach me! Any ideas?
