  1. Well posting this from my new PC!! Firstly the new hard disk I ordered was DOA! so thats gone back so have just installed XP 32bit for time being, but even so it really flies. About 5 seconds to launch photoshop 7 is ok with me. I do a lot of Flash stuff and it just runs Flash MX pro without any problems. This was the main reason for upgrading my pc as my old Duron 1.3 was really having a hard time on big flash projects. My graphics card now runs at 8X and all in all very very happy. I have cool and quiet running and to be honest like you say can not see any benefit in it - but just enjoying the playing about phase with my new toy!! I will install the xp 64 bit trial when i get the replacement HD and will post back then on how that goes. Thanks for all your input guys! really appreciated. For anyone wondering if to go 64 bit my answer is yes, even if you run xp 32bit you will see a huge improvement in processing power and general umph!! Specs are: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Newcastle, MSI K8TM-ILSR - mainboard, Nvidia GeForce FX5200 Graphics, 512 Meg RAM. SATA 80GB hard disk (DOA replacement due soon) so old hard disk 30Gig 133 IDE. So you can see cost was an issue but well chuffed with the computing power I have now for a very reasonable upgrade cost.
  2. That is a great help - thank you very much indeed. The hardware arrives monday so will build and post back - obviously all these little bits of knowledge from hands on experience are very useful.
  3. If this is the case scripts running on the hosting server should be able to access no problem, but remote access no. In effect its a security measure.
  4. More details pls - its hard to give advice without any details. Generally on hardware faults the ones i find hardest to track down are memory faults as in my experience they do manifest themselves in many different ways as the system starts to become unstable, quite often giving the impression some other hardware is at fault.
  5. Going wired to the router is not the ideal solution but a work around for the time being. My friend has a 64 Bit machine and i must admit it does fly, however he is running 32bit XP. I currently have a 1.3Gig Duron 512 Meg, so am expecting a huge performance increase.
  6. My new Athlon 64 3000+ powered PC arrives monday. Decision time is now what OS to run, i have a trial of the 64bit XP and will be looking to install that to give it a spin. My question is 32bit apps run on this 32bit emulation thingy in the 64bit version, I am just interested in how this performs or would it be better to install a 32bit OS and rely on the AMD native execution of 32bit apps. Also I understand that all drivers have to be 64bit, OK can get nvidia 64 bit drivers OK but nothing for my Belkin F5D7000 PCI Wireless card. OK I can go wired to the router so not really an issue but is there any drivers out there, as there is none at Belkin. Also any comments in general about 64Bit greatly appreciated. Lots of questions I know, but i know you chaps can come up trumps with some answers. TIA Dave
  7. Hi All! Recently developed a few problems with the system, when i power down the system simply re-boots. I have check and I am definatly powering down nor restarting! To poweroff I have to hold in the power button. In addition I have noticed my optical mouse remains on when the system is off. So obviously some power issues, this seems to have started since I have installed a new graphics card (nvidia FX5200 based) - Am i now on the limits of my power supply and is this why its playing up or are there any other issues. Motherboard is a via bases chipset. Thanks In advance.
  8. I ususally hit the power button to shut the PC down, however recently when I do this sometimes (not always) the PC does not power down, but re-boots. The only thing I have done recently is a new video card nvidia FX5200 - is this the cause? Thanks in advance.
  9. I always thought the practice was to embed your flash file in an HTML page, so the http redirect header would be the way to go. If there is no HTML page what happens if the user does not have the flash player installed? At least in an HTML page the player can be downloaded if need be.
  10. Don't know, but nice clean desktop!
  11. They made a good job of that didn't they! Who owns the hosting account the site is on, if it is your friend then I suggest she contacts the host and sees what they can do. If the partner owns the hosting account I would suggest she gets legal advice. Perhaps the odd strongly worded solicitors letter would be enough for him to pass on the passwords. Perhaps approach the local paper with the story, won't do him any favours the bad advertising, and this may be enough for him to give in. Problem is he owns the domain, so there is little you can do on that front. This is a good example on the problems that can arise when informal arrangements go wrong.
  12. Pages that are generated by asp or php tend to be dynamic pages. The script adds dynamic content to the page, perhaps from a database. Unless you are adding dynamic content then HTML is enough, but in anycase you can not beat dreamweaver for a good design tool.
  13. Well you lost me mate, you don't want to use the thing designed to do what you want as other people are doing it as well. Well why ask for advice then?
  14. Just use save as from the file menu and save it as a HTML file. If you save it as a text file from here the HTML will not be saved.
  15. I have had trouble getting php5 and mysql4.1 to work together, in the end got fed up and went back to php4.3.9 and mysql 4.0 till things settle down a bit. Suggest you do same. It seems PHP5 takes the solid foundation of 4.3.9 with mysql and then throws it out of the window!
  16. They have got to get in first and like i said previously i am sensible online and with emails etc.
  17. Doh! Banks never never never ask for your details in an email.
  18. Your IP address being visible is not spying, it has to be visible for you to surf the net etc. It is your address on the net much like your house address allows for the delivery if mail so your IP address allows for the delivery of information to you as you browse and use the net. Some scare advertising say 'Your IP address is visible' - well it has to be, but they are praying on ignorance of how the net works.
  19. Quite agree, the official PHP website is a great resource far from a waste of time, why ask for help and then through a stupid comment back like that.
  20. Perhaps it is up to the vast majority of us who don't spam to contact the powers that be and demand action is taken and make it clear enough is enough.
  21. I already use Thunderbird. Its a shame Microsoft do not take such steps to help their customers, only the God Head!
  22. So Bill Gates gets 4M emails a day, most of which are spam, BUT (according to the snippit on the MSFN home page) Microsoft have special technology to filter this out. Well what about the rest of us then Microsoft!!!
  23. Hidden away in the windows/system32 directory is iexpress.exe this should guide you through the creation of all the cab files you need. It also makes self extracting files as well. A well hidden little gem.
