because I want to try making an image of the C drive without the paging file. I would like to reboot and use acronis trueimage boot cd to clone my drive without anyspace taken by th epaging file. In the past my paging file was on another partion, but I learn that to optimize disk usage thas was not good...

This is bad. Do you use the asus on board nic ? try disabling in the bios, I had this problem with this asus board, it suck. And maybe you could be sure that you have latest driver and bios. For me the solution was to exchange the asus board for a ABit

You should not use fat32 on such large drive. The limitation of fat 32 is not bypassable. You will need to convert it to ntfs, on my experience doign so on a second partition never let me down, I never loose any data. I had never try my bootable partition, but I suppose it work too.
