- Using Virtual PC Hard Drives (VHD) on Virtual Box
When Windows VirtualPC works well with HAV-based computer, its partner (Microsoft VirtualPC 2007 SP1) which has compatibility issue won't work anymore in Windows 7, however, its rival (Sun VirtualBox 3.0.10) works wonders ! For your information, the most recent IE6 on XP3.VHD created (which is freely distributed ) would start to pop-up WGA balloon and needs to be activated within a day , even though it is alright to gain access Windows XP to perform administrative tasks using Windows 7's WPS remotely.- Win7 WinDefender Antispyware
If you aren't using MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials), then Windows Defender, at least, protects your computer from spyware and malware. The upgrade might take 20 hours or more , according to recent PC magazine article. For a smoother ride, it is recommended to do a fresh installation , which is also best after using Windows 7 for a few month later. Still confused? Get help from Ina Fried (CNET, as of 2009-Nov-2) who might give you a good relook on his article titled Windows 7 upgrade version: The do and don'ts found on http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10388567-56.html The excerpt, "...The difference between an in-place upgrade and a "clean" installation, in this instance, means backing up one's data, installing Windows 7, restoring the data, and reinstalling all Windows programs. Windows 7 upgrade disks can be used to do this clean installation and will recognize the previously installed version of Windows. So if you don't have any previously installed Windows on the machine, you will want to get yourself a full copy of Windows 7..."- Installing XP side-by-side with Windows 7...
Knowing that Windows 7 installs essential and third-party programs in Program Files folder, programs settings in ProgramData folder, and stores user's profile by creating a softlink Documents and Settings folder to Users folder, Windows system files in Windows folder, leaving XP user not able to store its personal data in Documents and Settings folder. There is an alternative method by creating a common pool directory for XP, for example, c:\HOME, in winnt.sif (unattended script), and saved it into I386 folder of ISO image. [unattended] ; essential and third-party programs ProgramFilesDir = "c:\HOME" <--- specify Drive C: where Windows 7 is going to install later ; shared system programs CommonProgramFilesDir = "c:\HOME\Common Files" <--- manage system files efficiently ; Windows system files TargetPath = HOME <--- remember to choose Drive C: to install XP [GuiUnattended] ; user personal data ProfilesDir="c:\HOME\addins" <--- this folder is seldom use- Silent SQL Server 2008 SP1 Express install and verify
