  1. I have a program that works as a service and works with the network on a low level. It appears that a service it starts too early, so I want to configure it so that it starts after Windows starts, ie after all the stuff in the Registry etc are started. I am thinking along the lines of the Windows equivalent of /etc/rc.local in Linux, or even after /etc/rc.local has run. I am looking in SysInternals Autoruns and looks like the Logon section refers to programs that are run after a user logs on or the first user logs on. Is that the case? I want to tell the program users to run the program not before 5 minutes after their first logon, and I wonder whether putting the program in that section will do the trick. Does the Logon section refers to programs that are run ONLY after the (first) user logs on? Any ideas /vfclistsGUY
  2. I am using Process Explorer to verify file signatures on Windows XP and the following Microsoft files are not verifying. This in spite of running Kaspersky AV and currently AVG svchost.exe winlogon.exe services.exe regedit.exe cmd.exe ctfmon.exe explorer.exe lsass.exe Does Microsoft supply verified signatures for these files? If they do why aren't the AV programs flagging them?
  3. Thanks for the links. Is there some way themes can be applied to Windows 2000? I think the problem I am facing occurs because the Windows Classic theme is obviously based on Windows 2000, but is there no way they can be applied to Windows 2000, even with some kind of update or patch?
  4. I have a program whose screen gets corrupted when I switch to the Windows Classic theme in Windows XP. With Windows 2000 there is no fix as there are no themes for Windows 2000. When can I download additional themes to use with Windows 2003 Server? It seems the base install doesn't have additional themes installed with it.
  5. I want to include the sc.exe program in an installation package to manage services on Windows 2000. Does it have any other dependencies or will it run on its own? Does it have any service pack dependencies?
  6. I am looking for a NAS device and I am pressed for time to make a quick decision, something well designed, with a professional interface, along the lines of FreeNAS, but with consumer oriented features. The Seagate BlackArmor looks a likely candidate, are there any others? Any recommendations?
  7. I will give your suggestion a shot. I suppose by 'espace' you mean 'escape'?
  8. I am looking for USB Flash drives with hardware write protection, you know the type with the button that you slide to disable writing. It is mainly for software installation and it is prevent virus infections. I need to update the software on it regularly, and DVDs and CDs don't always work. Any recommendations?
  9. Windows XP is taking too much time to logon to the desktop after I logon. In the past it appears to be linked to some network issues, like DNS etc. Is there some way to diagnose the issue?

  11. A previous virus infection disabled the ability to show hidden files in Windows Explorer. Whenever I try to show hidden files the command appears to run okay, but when I return to check it has reverted to hiding the hidden files. I have scanned the computer fully twice, but the behaviour persists. Could it be some change to the Group Policies that has caused, or are remnants of the virus masquerading at legit programs?
  12. Do third party firewall programs respond to netsh firewall commands? If during the installation of a program, the program executes the netsh firewall commands, and a third party firewall is running, is it programmed to recognize them and add them, or prompt the user to confirm? Is there some kind of API for firewall programs for them to be notified and popup to prompt for user responses? Or will the user have to add them manually?
  13. When I try to copy and paste after restarting Remote Desktop, it doesn't work, and sometimes pasting in remote applicaton causes it to crash. Is there any information about this problem?
