At the "Setup Options" screen, click on "Advanced Options", and make sure "copy all installation files from the CD" is checked. If it's grayed out - that's fine. After setup finishes closes, on your c drive you will have 2 folders. FDV Do we need to look for a DLL that probably has something to do with IE? If you commented something it means there is some reason for this. In fact we already found how to restore QL with commenting these lines. The only issue now is to create that folder. Newly created user (in which account you log in during the first start) has this feature: all items in his profile is created during the first start. That is why you can't create any item inside %User Profile% before the first start and you get these Administrator.000 like accounts. That's it - you can't creat this directory with any INF during setup. Most of new user items are created from Default Profile and there are some that created from somewhere else. Note 1: you can try creating this folder in Default Profile and it's probably will be copied to %User Profile% during it's creation. If Note 1 doesn't work, see Note 2 Note 2: a CMD file should be created that is placed to Default Profile (Start up folder). During first boot when a new profile is created this CMD will be copied to %User Profile% (Start up) and run right after that. This CMD will create needed folder for the current user.

PS I have one more modification of FDV's fileset in TXTSETUP.SIF - uncommented MSHTML.DLL and MSHTML.TLB. No other files are altered. Just in case.

Don't quite get you. Creating directory doesn't help, it's needed too but it's not critical - you can create it later. It is probably work of some registry keys and presence of some DLLs in system32. If we have working set we could compare the differences with the new one (try changing IE.INF and TXTSETUP.SIF and see if it works and then try to locate needed keys and files).

Wow! Seems you tested it very heavy But why so small - 160KB? If you are sure the set is among these files maybe share between two or three people so to filter out which one is working and explore it? Somebody else has Quick Launch working and the fileset for it?

Quick Launch I can't get it working I found in my archive a previous set - fileset2 - and when just injecting in W2k SP4 it also doesn't help (I created the folder Quick Launch in %MyProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer and placed a shortcut in it too). WWWeb Do you still have that set? Maybe it would be a good idea to send it to FDV to explore? Could you describe how you turned on Quick Launch on it?

For editing purposes I have (and recommend) XaraX. But the point is in replacing the files already existed with better (?) analogues not installing other soft, preserving files associations and other system features. Probably it's not possible but that's already another questions

I experimented once with MSPaint for JPEG support I read somewhere it is possible for W9X. No success on W2k just replacing the files. something else was needed. I'm not a computer man so don't know what was needed but suspect it's about this kernel things.

The point of reducing files? Interesting question What is the point of fishing or making models? Is it time spending for nothing? No, it's hobby. It's learning. It's some fun. Somebody like spending time in bars. I like spending it with my computer. When I'd got my first notebook I understood (after some time of course) that I don't want go back to a desk PC. When I have to go somewhere on business I understand how's good to have all you need in only one reasonably small case. I like it compact. Reasonably compact. For an OS: less files, smaller regestry but good functionality. Why I reduce files? There are a lot of files left obsolete ater using your set There are a lot of files that I never used, don't use and are not going to use in future like cursors and wallpapers. All my hardware needs external drivers (not supplied by W2k source) and I can delete safetely nearly all all drivers from the source. Only deleting printer drivers reduces the source about 20-some MB and HFSLIP and than the installation even run faster in this case (if there is printer drivers reducing file in HFCLEANUP). I'm not rushing for the smallest source possible. I'd told you one day: it's not the size that is metter And I'm completely agree about compact regestry - it's sometime even more important for the fast OS. But I'm a bit of a perfectionist - all including the source and the regestry should be "clean" and fast.
