1. For future readers, just double click the ULZ file, jcarle is not hosting it from his website, so you will have to download it from this thread.
2. Here is M$ warning you not to change it via the registry, so consider yourself warned. At least you have a starting point. One problem I can clearly see is that even if you change it there the registry is still tattooed with hard-coded links to folders inside the "Program Files" directory. For instance "Common Files" in the jpeg will need to also be moved at the same time. Sounds like more work than it is worth.
3. I got a dumb question, can anyone tell me if 3GB SATA is limited to 300MB on the entire BUS, or is it 300MB per channel. If it is the entire bus, then it would be a waste of time to try and RAID multiple SSD's. Otherwise, if it is 300MB for each port, couldn't a four disk Vertex stripe reach 800MB, at least in theory. @Coffee, was planning on SSD/Windows 7 specifically for the TRIM command. Does anyone know of a retail SSD that is confirmed pre-loaded with firmware updates. Really hate having spending money on crap that doesn't work fresh out the box. What's your take on Multi-Level vs. single level. Is that just fanboy talk, most the reports seem contradictory to each other and I cannot tell if it is another bluray vs HDDVD mudslinging or not.
4. According to this, your SSD is actually making the announced SPEC (125MB/90MB) Which is rare from what I understand. DATA TRANSFER RATES Sustain Read Speed up to 125MB/s Sustain Write Speed up to 95MB/s Mainly I wanted to find out if OCZ Vertex or any other SSD that claims of 200MB read speed can actually back it up. Rumored spec on OCZ Vertex from an online retailer. But the other rumor is that you will never achieve this in real world uses. Can anyone prove or disclaim this ? Read Speed Up to 200MBps Write Speed Up to 160MBps
5. Wanted to see which is faster a RAMDrive or an SSD. Since I don't own a SSD yet, (leaning towards OCZ Vertex) I will post the results of Qsoft Ramdrive, one of an older SSD, and another for a 2 disk RAID Stripe. If anyone has a newer SSD, preferably with firmware updates and W7, they should post the speeds of each brand/model. Decided to install W7 into a RAM based VM and it turns out it is more responsive than the Host OS. Had to use allocate all disk space now setting or VMware will error claiming not enough room, even when there is. To show over-head associated with VMware's Hyper-Visor, here is the direct access benchmark from Windows 7 x64 on the same RAMDrive. Qsoft RAMDrive - Direct Access Benchmarks. 8GB DDR2 RAM Sequential Read : 2005.759 MB/s Sequential Write : 2898.645 MB/s Random Read 512KB : 1793.318 MB/s Random Write 512KB : 2817.644 MB/s Random Read 4KB : 771.885 MB/s Random Write 4KB : 539.490 MB/s Gigabyte I-RAM 4GB DDR SSD - For comparison. 6. Install the Windows 7 WAIKSearch for "Unattend.chm"
7. I get the error on x86 as well as x64. Sometimes the clean-up wim command will not clear the error. What works for me is to delete the folder and then run the clean-up wim command. Since this error doesn't affect the "Commit" action, One could try/catch this error and if the dis-mount fails, run a routine to delete/re-create the mount directory followed by cleanup-wim afterward.
8. Try adding this to autounattend.xml Specialize > Microsoft-Windows-IE-InternetExplorer. <TrustedSites>\\SERVER\SHARE</TrustedSites>
9. What we do is give the user a temporary password and tell them to leave their on computer overnight. After hours go into user account and reset users password and do our business. Once done we go back into user account and hit the "user must change password at next login" checkbox. User logs in the next day with the temporary password and changes it.
10. Only one update this month, here is a drop in. <update id="KB976325" category="1" publishdate="2009-12-02" article="http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=976325">
CRITICAL - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7 - x86 - 976325

Security issues have been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise a computer running Microsoft Internet Explorer and gain control over it.
<filename>Windows6.1-KB976325-x86.msu</filename>
</update> <update id="KB976325" category="2" publishdate="2009-12-02" article="http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=976325">
CRITICAL - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7 - x64 - 976325

Security issues have been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise a computer running Microsoft Internet Explorer and gain control over it.
<filename>Windows6.1-KB976325-x64.msu</filename>
</update> <update id="KB976325" category="5" publishdate="2009-12-02" article="http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=976325">
CRITICAL - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 in Windows Server 2008 R2 - x64 - 976325

Security issues have been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise a computer running Microsoft Internet Explorer and gain control over it.
<filename>Windows6.1-KB976325-x64.msu</filename>
</update> @kklijer - I used this. You will have to visit each KB article page. Find/follow the link for "IT Professionals. Sift through the list of "Affected Software" until you find your version of Windows 7 (x86 or x64). Then fill in all the information from the download page and use the "Other Update" or "Direct Link" button to generate your XML. Repeat the process for each and every update. Otherwise, probably have to do it by hand and use XML format similar to the above example.
11. You might try the remount command. Dism /Remount-Wim /MountDir:<path_to_mount_directory>
12. Open Device Manager - Disable your Sound Card Driver. or - Control Panel\Sound and disable your speakers. or - just use the mute button like the rest of us.
13. It all depends on the licensing in use. For instance Creative Commons licenses are very flexible and in many cases can allow for 100% legal redistribution. There are even legal trackers that monitor and try to maintain only freely distributable torrents.
14. I'd create two captures, one for .NET and a second one with the app the requires .NET. Next I'd edit the package.ini of the second package to add the .NET framework as a required App Link. Then the second package can access the framework from PE.RequiredAppLinks=%ProgramFilesDir%\MyFolder\NET_Framework.exe This will also be easier when it's time to make changes in your app, no need to repackage the entire framework each time.
15. Try this batch to exe compiler Newest version supports encryption which protects against decompiling. Direct Download Otherwise, if you are really needing to go .NET on WimPE it is possible with VMware ThinApp's app-Linking. Here is a step by step walkthrough.. I haven't heard of any other way that works on WimPE. EDIT: VB6 would probably be more compatible, at worst you would need your users to include the runtime in the WIM build.
16. Edit the settings into your Default Users profile if you want it to apply to all users. Find ogatats batch scripted procedure for this in post #9 here. M$ Article here.
17. Isn't that how Apple got started ? Steve Jobs poking around Xerox's trash.
18. Are you sure you work for a White Box OEM - Most of those companies can afford a $350 TechNet subscription and have no such problems finding the proper iso's. If your manager cannot splurge for TechNet, simply create a Windows Live account and Join oem.microsoft.com for free and download the Windows XP OPK (OEM Pre-installation Kit). It contains everything you need. Use the tools in the OPK to create a WINNT.SIF and use it to automate the 99% of the install (time zone, language, whatever), just remember to leave out the Product Key, because as you say, each machine will have a legit COA that will need to be entered manually. Also no one is talking about M$ not supporting nLite (even though that is probably true), they are referring to your violation of nLite's license by using it for commercial purposes. nLite if for personal/private use and your first post clearly states you are using it at work. That is why no one will be able to help you with nLite, you will have to use the OPK to create your unattended installation just like every other White Box builder. By the by, once you get the TechNet subscription, just use W2K3 RIS server and make your life a little easier. Installing over the network is much faster than CD, and you can also use WSUS server to speed up your update integration.
19. Not exactly a registry based tool, but I compile applications for portable use with ThinApp. It creates a virtual registry and all changes the app makes occur only in the virtual registry. Xenocode works kinda like ThinApp where you package your application and settings. It creates a "portable" application that leaves no settings behind.
20. Open Diskmgmt.msc and attach a snapshot of your partitions. Like Allan alluded to it's possible your Windows C:\ partition is only the C:\ Drive when windows is booted. Since you mention DELL it is likely your actual C:\ drive is renamed to D:\ on this particular machine because most DELLS come with a recovery partition. I cannot say for sure until I see how your partitions are setup.
21. When I worked for USWest/Qwest we used HP OpenView. But some quick searches for SNMP freeware turned up OpenNMS, never actually used it myself, but at quick glance this looks capable enough to do the trick. http://www.opennms.org/wiki/Main_Page Looking at their documentation this does run on Windows. "As of OpenNMS 1.3.8, there is initial support for running on Windows. There are a lot of rough edges, but it is possible to install and run on Windows 2000 and up. " Here is the help section detailing the Auto-Discovery and which protocols are supported. http://www.opennms.org/wiki/Discovery Here is where they describe how to create a topology map, like I said, never tried it myself, but it looks like it can be done. I assume they have an option to make the maps show lan segments inside a single office instead of geographic break-downs like this overview of Italy map. http://www.opennms.org/wiki/Maps_In_Trunk Hopefully it has a drill-down capability and you could click on the Rome office and then see map of all the Rome routers and switches. Then click on a switch and see the map of all the clients connected to that particular switch and so on. If anyone has a smaller application that does not require SQL database's and running a WebServer we are all ears. I'm not sure I've ever seen a product like this targeted towards retail customers.
22. The two updates you mention cannot be slip-streamed per se. But I imagine some industrius type will find a way to install them at the setupcomplete.cmd stage For other readers the updates are the Windows Defender Definitions and the Malicious Software Tool. These are located inside "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" without any filename extenstion (usually a long guid looking random name). Way I did it was on a clean install, go to update, download only the drivers, and rename all the files in that folder into *.cab format. After renaming, open each .CAB in WinRAR and only keep the 3 files that contain drivers. The fourth file (15KB) should error that it is not a valid archive. this is normal. Keep the 3 drivers and avoid the 1 non-driver file you will find. The .CAB's can then be integrated via the Add-Drivers command. LOL, I think you just wrote the new help manual.
23. FYI, you are changing HKCU keys, the confusion is these keys are not named HKCU until the "Current User" is logged in. So mission accomplished, at least in theory. For future readers, if someone wanted to make the changes permanent, they could mount their WIM with DISM (to C:\Mount in my example), and modify the ntuser.dat offline. Just change the reg load command to point to the mount directory. reg load "HKU\DefaultUser" "c:\Mount\users\Default\ntuser.dat" Question: Anyone know of a program that can take a .REG file and convert it to reg.exe compatible script ?
24. How much is the levy on a 50 spindle of DVD's. Is it more than 10,000 lira ?
25. The 4GB limit only when talking about ISO's of 9660 format. As Gosh said you could have used UDF without the need for splitting. Either way works as long as it gets the job done. Below is some info for future readers. 9660 - UDF - Comparison - About halfway down the comparison, you'll find ISO 9660 is limited to 4GB while UDF can handle 16 Exabytes. (16 million gigabytes) Oscdimg Command Line syntax - Set the ISO UDF only with the -u2 command. AFAIK Windows 7 has the UDF driver built in
