  1. You may have had luck making XP as fast as 2K by disabling un-needed services. See: http://wiki.blackviper.com/wiki/Main_Page I believe AVG Free would still work. It uses a plugin system, so during install, select 'custom'. You'll be able to NOT install the components for say... e-mail scanning (I use yahoo, and gmail), link scanning (know what site you're going to), and just leave the real time protection on (system/user file accesses). If that isn't enough, disable the AVG startup with 'msconfig', or a program like CCleaner. Then go to the start menu, and type without quotes 'services.msc'. Find the AVG service, set it to manual. Now you have on demand virus scanning, and it'll only be on when you turn it on. Note if you do this, you may not need to prevent any plugins during install.
  2. So..., one needs to install both the v2, and v5? Are there instructions for English speakers in the works?
  3. Wow. I feel dumb. Apparently it's my monitor. It had the same effect on the photo displayed in the thread as it did on the Windows I took a snapshot of. All darker areas trail off to the right about as far as the original area. I couldn't find anything by Googling my specific monitor on the issue. Should I uninstall SP2? Is it really needed for any important updates/features? EDIT; Well... after updating the monitor's driver (HP 2009m), downloading a utility for it, and running the utility, I found there is no software solution to this. I've uninstalled SP2, and all is well in this PC's Vista 64bit world. I suppose that using a HDMI connection (instead of VGA) may have solved this, but I'm not spending any cash to fix a now non-existent problem.
  4. I changed the background to a neutral color as it doesn't really stand out unless I'm moving the windows. I also added the arrows post screen capture.
  5. Hi. I'm not quite sure when it occurred, but I had updated this machine to SP2 in the last couple of days. I'm getting a blur/shadow effect to the right of any open windows on my screen. It isn't just the desktop either as it overlays on top of other open windows, or programs. The issue is ever so slight, but noticeable to me. Does anyone know how I might fix this? Yes, I have updated my Nvidia drivers.
  6. Okay. Is there any other type of emulation software that would allow me to connect to the internet? Not an option. I'm not willing to spend money to get this particular PC connected.
  7. Hello. I have a long standing problem, and have asked about it here before. I have as my only means of internet connection a USB 3G modem. Unfortunately, it only comes with drivers for Win2k & up. Unless someone has written a driver for Windows 98/ME, for my particular model (Starcom UM175), I'm plain outta luck. Well..., recently I've been trying out some Linux distros, and thir kernels have built in support for most of these type of modems. This allows me to even connect this particular old dinosaur, with modern software. But...., the performance compared to Windows is not good. So after doing some reading on Linux emulation on Windows, I found this thing called 'Cygwin'. Is it possible to use this to connect to the net through something like wvdial + ppp, and would anyone know how to set it up to do that. I'd like to get Windows 98/ME connected to the net, because I haven't been able to since I abandoned dial-up a few years back.
  8. Would it possible for someone to condense, or edit, all this info into a single post, with links to all of the items? So... nobody has to read through the entire thread for all the requirements. Maybe the OP could edit the first post?
  9. Hello. I'm aware of the 'safe mode' work-around to installing unsigned drivers in Vista x64, but I was wondering if there would be some way to make the changes permanent? This is for Vista Home Premium (64bit) with SP1 (build 6001).
  10. Hmmm. I'm still sorting through all the DOS stuff there, so far it's given me all the info I need. It gives me the same message. I've even tried running the installer silently. All that does is extract the WMP9 setup to the "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\installer" folder. Even IF I could connect to the internet through Win98, I probably wouldn't, when I can just run a WinNT variation on the same PC. Is there anyone who knows how to install this without internet, or Win Update Manager access?
  11. Hello. I've been receiving this error when I attempt to install the WMP 9 onto Windows 98 SE. I'm guessing this has something to do with either an internet connection being unavailable, or the Windows Update manager. Is there any way to install the player without needing to check online for any MS update cr*p...? Is there maybe a way to manually install WMP 9?
  12. Would it be possible to slipstream most of these updates into a rebuilt Windows install disc, or even manually replace them in the CABs? Or... do most of the files require post-installation registry scripts to be run? If there are some files that could be replaced manually (by rebuilding CAB with ME version) in the Windows 98 SE CABs, how would I know which ones are safe?
  13. Nevermind. I figured something out. 1. Extracted the boot image from my orginal Windows 98 SE install disc, using the final 'ISObuster' freeware edition. 2. Used the trial version of 'WinImage' to resize the 1440kb floppy image to a 2880kb floppy image. 3. Used 'WinImage' to add the files extracted from 'EBD.CAB' into the floppy image, and then deleted the cab. 4. I used the command line tool 'MKBT' to extract a bootsector from my Windows 98 emergency boot floppy. 5. I used the same 'MKBT' to add that bootsector into the resized floppy image. 6. Rebuilt the untouched Windows disc structure with the freeware 'IMGBurn', after selecting the floppy boot image in emulation settings. (Added UDF support while at it) Done.
  14. Hi. I've attempted to modify some files from a boot image I've extracted from my Windows install disc. Everything runs as to be expected, except for the 'setup from cd' option. Here are the setup files. Could someone tell me what I did wrong? I just want an easy way to reinstall quickly, with everything in one place in case I have to restart...... again. Also, not having a floppy drive on my other PCs is a motivator to include the floppy tools ram-drive, so I can run everything from the cd.
  15. Sorry for coming into this topic so late, but has anyone ever tested compatibility with 98lite? First and foremost this is the app I need compatibility with, followed by KernelEx. Also... If it does work with 98lite, does anyone know if I can slip-stream in just the updates, and do a "clean install" with 98lite? Will the newer slip-streamed files get copied over by 98lite? -Edit- Actually, yes it does work with 98lite. 98lite copied over all of the updated files Problem is that even with a original (non-98lited) install, this SP creates all sorts of blue-screen crashes, and errors. Not worth using, especially if it messes with my ability to use disc burning software.
  16. Hey, thanks a lot. That's exactly what I needed. Now I can start from scratch yet again, with the proper tools. I even changed the boot sector img on my Windows install disc to contain the latest tools.
  17. Wasn't sure if I could rename the fdisk.98g to fdisk.exe, or if it was a patch of some sort. Cool. I've downloaded, and extracted them. Would anyone know of a simple way to replace the FORMAT.COM in the EDB.CAB file, without corrupting it? I need to be able to do it, without installing any programs. Only a portable solution is viable.
  18. Actually, I experienced the phantom drive lettering as well. Thanks for the links. Any idea where I could find the latest official versions for Windows 98? I'd like to replace the files on my boot disc with them.
  19. I seem to be having an issue with Windows 98 not properly recognizing partitions on a secondary HD. It was fine and all, until I decided to attempt to fix a LBA/CHS error on my primary HD'd partitions. I ended up reformatting, and reinstalling 98 several times before I got it right. The thing is if I try to create any more than 2 partitions on it, Windows 98 will load them in DOS compatibility mode. I've tried whole drive extended, with logical partitions. I've tried 1 primary partition, with the rest in extended. I've tried all primary partitions. I've tried all of the previous with differing combos of fat16, and fat32. None of the configurations fix the problem. And... if I attempt to format the DOS compatible partitions in Win98, I receive some type of "chm" error. This is a dual boot system, and when I boot into WinXP, it recognizes everything like I created it. Any ideas? I'm about exausted on problems with Win98, like recycle-bin errors, lack of proper USB support, disk controller issues... Because DOS was the reason for installing it as an OS to begin with, I was wondering, can I do everything in the ME "DOS hack" that I can do in Win98?
  20. I started out as a casual user of the family PC, using Windows ME. I went on to being 'familiar' with XP, and finally ended up using Vista x86/x64 as my main OSes (for now... I may eventually get 7). Only fairly recently have I begun to have an interest in tweaking, and learning 'more' about operating systems. I've kind of been working my way 'back' in OS time. These pages of yours may take some time to read, comprehend, and apply. It may be a few days, or more, before I get back on this if at all. If all goes well, I may not need this, but I hope the offer stays open if I do. Thanks for the tips. B)
  21. I think it does... Not a problem at all. Okay after reading quite a bit of this, I'm getting confused. How would I have an option to boot into Windows normally (without any changes), and have a single option to boot into DOS. In other words, I do not need to multi-boot DOS itself. I'd like to configure just one way to load DOS, and have the ability to boot Windows normally (without any autoexec.bat/config.sys entries added). Or... are the config.sys, and autoexec.bat, used soley for DOS backwards compatibility in Windows 98? IE - Any DOS entry/drivers referenced will not be loaded by, or effect, Windows 98...
  22. Cool coffee beans, thanks. I seem to be getting a lot of that link. Okay. Assuming I'd like to keep DOS modification separate from Windows, how might I set them up, so they don't mess with each others settings?
  23. Hi. 1.) Would anyone know how would I go about renaming the Windows 98 swap file (WIN386.SWP)? I can't seem to find a entry for it in the registry. 2.) Is there any way I can setup custom DOS start files, so that the DOS drivers aren't loaded for Windows 98 at boot as well? For instance, if I restart in DOS, and have DOS only 'autoexec.bat' entries. 3.) After restarting in DOS, I can't navigate to my other partitions. How would I set it up, so that DOS recognizes them? Sorry, I'm new to the Win98/DOS combo usage.
  24. Cleaning up unnecessary registry entries, and leftover files. Like several other programs mentioned in the thread, this would be preventative, but not very helpful after the fact. I guess the answer is, 'no, there isn't a program like this for Win9x'. I'll probably end up re-installing, and using one of the above mentioned programs 'before' installing any new software. Although..., this wont cover any changes made to the registry by a program outside of it's initial installation. Thanks for suggestions.
  25. No dice. The problem remains. One of the reasons for using 98lite was avoiding IE. Considering it'd take ~20 minutes to reinstall, I suppose I could try it.
