  1. Well after messing around with it for a bit, I had double checked in XP that no disk compression was enabled, reformatted, etc., I finally got it to at least be readable/writable. I had to recreate the partition altogether, with Win98's fdisk. Now I'm having an issue where I can't use the partition for my swapfile, because the partition is running in something called "MS-DOS compatibility mode". Every time I reboot after setting it as my swapfile, the virtual memory has been disabled on that drive. Anyone more knowledgeable in Win98 know what's up? Do I have to use a primary partition, instead of logical, if I want to do this?
  2. Here's the run down. Using GRUB4DOS as a boot manager, I have multiple OSes installed on this PC, and they are two internal Sata HDs (0, and 1). What I did was install Windows ME to the first primary partition of the second HD (hd1,0), and created a extended, logical, partition on the first (0,4). This is what my GRUB4DOS entry looked like. hide (hd0,0) hide (hd0,1) unhide (hd0,4) unhide (hd1,0) unhide (hd1,1) hide (hd1,2) hide (hd1,4) root (hd1,0) makeactive chainloader /io.sys Using this, Windows ME loaded just fine. I recently formatted the drive (hd1,0), and installed Windows 98 instead. The thing is that the above entry no longer works, as I'm getting the message that "a device attached to the system isn't functioning". It shows up after my primary fat32 "C" drive, but before my secondary primary fat32 drive. It shows up as drive "D" of C/D/E, instead of it being at the end of the alphabetical list "E" like with WinME. Also, it shows as 0MB of 0MB free. I've attempted the remap the drive like this: map (hd0) (hd1) map (hd1) (hd0) And this: map (hd0,4) (hd1,4) map (hd1,4) (hd0,4) All these do is cause the OS to hang instead of load to the desktop. Any ideas...?
  3. Hello. I'm attempting to setup an old "Matrox G200" (8MB) video card on a Pentium 3 PC, but I'm having a couple issues with the Windows 2000 installation. Before I explain the problem this is what I've tried so far. This PC also has a WinXP, and Win98SE multi-boot install. I've installed the official drivers from the Matrox Legacy Drivers page "HERE". When I plugged the PCI card into the slot, the PCI card auto-detect kicked in, immediately taking me to the boot select screen for my boot manager. So far so good. When I loaded up Win98, it automatically installed the default VGA driver for it, and from there I ran the Matrox driver installation. I restarted, and everything was good. I went to load up WinXP, but it froze at the end of the loading process right before it would go to the desktop. I cold booted, pressed F8, loaded Windows in VGA mode, installed the XP drivers, and restarted successfully. Finally, I tried the same procedure I used with WinXP in Win2K. Instead of the drivers installing correctly, the screen flashed, came back, and froze at the end of the loading process right before it would go to the desktop. The weird thing is I could hear the standard Windows startup sound play, but the screen stayed at the loading screen. Confused, I rebooted, and selected VGA mode. It started right up with the default VGA driver... No matter how many times I install, uninstall, use safe mode to install, or VGA mode, it freezes at the end of the normal Windows load screen. Any ideas? [EDIT] After much trial and error, I found that the onboard graphics kept re-enabling each reboot. I had to disable onboard video in the BIOS, and not uninstall the onboard video in the device manager, but disable it. After that I succesfully installed the drivers. Sorry, this was my first graphics card install here... All others I've used were pre-installed.
  4. Hello. I'm attempting to setup FreeDOS, so I can play some older DOS games. What I seem to be having a problem with is that there's no sound. This is my FDCONFIG.SYS: Only the first 3 options are available: "MENU 1 - Load FreeDOS with EMM386, no EMS (most UMBs), max RAM free" "MENU 2 - Load FreeDOS with EMM386+EMS and SHARE" "MENU 3 - Load FreeDOS including HIMEM XMS-memory driver" Do I need all of these? Would someone be able to give me a basic config.sys, and autoexec.bat, that'd work in general? And... one more thing. this PC is a Trigem Cognac, Pentium Celeron 667, with no sound card. I believe it uses AC'97 audio, which isn't Sound Blaster compatible. Is there any way I could get sound in DOS games that require SB audio, like maybe through some type of emulation drivers? -EDIT- Nevermind, I just went out and bought a used, working, FM sound card.
  5. Thanks, I appreciate the help. But per the 1st post question, I still want a boot option to load either one, and not just start one after the other.
  6. Awesome. But, does anyone know how to do this? I've gotten this line stating "Starting Windows Emergency Boot...", but it just loads to Windows. How do I access DOS?
  7. There are two things I would like to know about this. What is the best way to re-enable DOS mode with the original Windows ME files? (No implementation of files from previous Win9x systems...) Could modified, renamed, Windows ME files be used instead of replacing the original files by way of GRUB4DOS, allowing the "dual" boot of both? (For instance: chainloader /IO.SYS and chainloader /CUSTOM.SYS) Any help on the matter would be appreciated. -EDIT- I just picked up a copy of Windows 98, so this is no longer an issue for this particular old PC.
  8. since this thread has been bumped already... Not sure if it's pertinent, but until recently all I could get to install on Windows ME was the 'Dec, 2006' redistributable. After downloading, and installing the latest from 'Feb, 2010' on XP, I tried the same version on ME. It installed correctly, and seems to be working fine.
  9. I was hoping more for a way to replace the SHELL32.dll embedded icons, because the system has no RAM to spare for a constantly running program. The PC I run Win2k on only has 24bit max color anyways, but thanks. Anyone have a way to align the icons on the desktop, without manually selecting it each time?
  10. Hello. Does anyone know if there is a way, short of using resource hacker, to upgrade the majority of systems icons in 2000 to use those of XP. Hard Drives, USB ports, CD/DVD, Start Menu, etc...? Also, does anyone know of an app/proggy that'd allow an "align to grid" option to be available on the desktop?
  11. Perhaps your question would be better suited for a dedicated gaming forum? the 1Emulation Forums come to mind. Although I do wonder how someone who knows how to dump the BIOS from their Playstation 2 doesn't even know how to set up the PS2 emulator, or just use the system they dumped the BIOS rom from...
  12. Hello. I was wondering if anyone would know of a good starting point concerning what could be removed from XP, with the exception of components needed for gaming. This would be for emulators, source ports, and somewhat older Windows games (pre-2003). Obviously, DirectX and possibly the OpenGL drivers would need to stay, but what non-essential processes could I get rid of to increase XP's system performance? What typical processes/utilities running by default in the background could I eliminate to increase available RAM, processor time, HD reading/writing speed, etc.? Has anyone done something like this before? I don't need the e-mail, internet, documents, or pretty much any programs not related to gaming...
  13. I've installed the K-Lite codec pack 5.90, but no video will play back... Did this work out or you on 5.83? Not sure why that happened, but the latest stable build from their sourceforge page does work: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpc-hc/files/ The one labeled 2009-08-26
  14. Hi. I was hoping someone might know if there is a way to connect one of the Verizon USB modems to my PC, and have them recognized? From the following link, the um150 & um175 models: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/HowToControllerServlet?path=phoneGuides&manufacturer=Verizon+Wireless Are there any generic drivers I could use for these, or has anyone else succeeded in connecting with them on a Win9X OS?
  15. Isn't Firefox "2.0.0.20" no longer supported by Youtube itself? You'll get a prompt saying that at the very least some content will not be functional...
  16. I take it then that this project is done on a case by case basis for the dlls? Pretty much just to get specific programs working, as opposed to something like the KernelEx project? Chrome is nice, but I'd much rather use source code based Iron.
  17. Does KernelEx allow an installation of a later DirectX 9.0c package than the vanilla Windows 98/ME does?
  18. Okay. I think I understand, thanks. I attempted to use this with the latest Srware Iron (Google Chrome derivative), and I received an "iswow64" kernel32 error while attempting to install. From what I've read it's related to 64bit OSes, so it's a strange error considering.
  19. I know this has probably been asked before, but how does one install this? Is it supposed to be an automated install/un-install? I couldn't find a single instance of any English speaker giving instruction on how to install, and uninstall this...
  20. Yes, after applying mkswap. But I don't know what Windows will do with the -now Linux- swapfile. I loaded up the Windows 9x after doing this, and it seems to be fine. No. Different distro's can use different ways to boot. But in many cases you can add the commands to /etc/rc.local or /etc/rc.d/rc.local Found it, thanks. (See above) BTW - Is there any way for me to check to see if it's working properly, like a utility/command to see if it's being used?
  21. Okay, two questions about this. What if I already created a swap file through Windows, could I just use that with the swapon command? And... how do I add this file to the startup script, is it the same for every generic Linux?
  22. Do you also know which filesystems the two OS actually use? jaclaz They will both recognize the standard fat (16, 32) file systems... I found some rudimentary instructions on the web, but they were tailored towards specific Linux distros (or Windows XP using the NTFS file system).
  23. Hi. Again I find myself attempting to set up a old pc for someone. Based on it's specs, I was going to try installing an older Windows on it, along with a Linux that could run modern programs. (Native Linux, or WiNE) My main question is: Is it possible to set up a shared swap-space/page-file on a separate partition from the OSes? Yes, I know Linux uses a partition, and Windows uses a file on a partition. Would there be some way for me to max out the size of the Windows paging file to the size of the partition, assuming the min & max sizes are the same?
  24. Got it to work with the latest version of IMGBurn. It has the ability to create IS9660 + UDF disc formats. The MP3 cd-rs are working great in my vehicle, and home, stereo systems now. Thanks for the links though.
  25. The only similar option is 'Burn files to disc: using Windows', and it achieved the same results. I'm going to try out an app like IMGBurn, and post back the results. OR could someone recommend me a good 'free' app that has worked for them? This is on a Vista 32bit Home Premiun.
