  1. Can you run ImageX from dos? Or do you have to boot to WinPE 2.0 to run ImageX? I like the way Ghost 2003 (dose-based) ran from a floppy. I actually used a floppy image and loaded the floppy image using Grub loader. It was instantaneous. Is it possbile to do the same with ImageX - run it from a floppy? Edit: Just read up on ImageX. I see you can't use it in dos cause your NTFS HDD's won't be mounted. Oh well.
  2. All right! I installed my memory. System is up and running. The memory score went from 2.9 to 4.5, not bad. My overall score is still 1.0 cause of the graphics card. But that'll have to wait.
  3. I've got a Samsung (which is actually TSST) SATA DVD-RW. Works fine. There's no speed advantage of SATA over IDE. For ROM's the speed is the speed, meaning if it's 18X, then it's 18X, whether it's SATA or IDE doesn't matter. The only reason I opted for SATA over IDE is the cable - it's better for aerodynamics in the case; and because I don't have any IDE ports left.
  4. Thanks for your help guys. I have ordered 1 GB memory single-channel and it's been delivered. I'm just not at home to install it. Anyway, I hope Vista is happy with 1.5 GB. It was suffering with 512 MB. I will post if I have questions. I'm sure you guys have the answers here if I have problems.
  5. Remember my memory is not dual channel. Are you saying even if I don't have dual channel memory, that installing in pairs of same size will enable dural channel mode??
  6. record a macro. then assign the macro a button.
  7. Yeah, good news. I installed .NET 1.1, then 1.1 SP1, then installed both Sony SoundForge 8.0d and CD Architect 5.2a. Both work without any errors. Excellent. Thanks.
  8. Dynamically Computer Label with User Name and Computer Name This registry tweak will dynamically update the Computer label on the desktop with the user name and computer name. For example, if John is logged on MyComp, then the label will be “John on MyComp”. 9. Seems accidentally deleting the recycle bin is common since Vista added the "Delete" in the right-click menu. I've done it too, confusing "Delete" with "Empty Recycle Bin". Here's a way you can change the delete function to a search function to prevent accidental delete. 11. Is it okay to mix memory sizes such as a 512 MB DIMM + 1 GB DIMM? Both have the same CAS Latency of 4 and are DDR2 PC-4200 533 MHz. My MOBO is Asus P5GDC-V deluxe. Manual says if it's dual channel, they should be same. But these are single channel and it doesn't say anything about single channel.
  12. I would imagine your MFT also takes up considerable space which is not accounted for when you right click all files and folders within C: and view the total file size of all files and foldes. Right-clicking C:\ would give a better representation of disk space usage, including MFT vs right-clicking files and folders, which would show just the space occupied by just that. Someone else might be able to shed more light on this.
  13. Download fileformatconverter.exe from MS. It will allow you to open and save as XML format. Your docx will have the new icon and doc will have old icon. Even in 2007, doc has old icon and docx has the new icon.
  14. If you still need to know where OE stores the WAB file, use regedit, find the key "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4\" The filename should be there with the default path if you haven't changed it. You can directly export the WAB into Windows Mail. I usually edit this registry key to specify a location of my WAB on a partition other than the OS partition.
  15. Are you asking where Vista stores your address book or Windows XP? I wasn't sure if you're exporting address book from XP to import in Vista or from Vista to Vista clean install. Anyway, in Vista, Windows Mail does not use the WAB address book format anymore. Each contact is stored as a separate file in "%userprofile%\Contacts\" When you import your Outlook Express addres book (WAB), it separates all your contacts out as such in this folder.
  16. roboform for me. all my passwords stored for sites. roboform also has safenotes - you can store id's, ss #, etc. in safenotes with one password. it costs $.
  17. Where is the temp folder in Vista? In XP, you could type %temp% and the folder came up. Is the same in Vista?
  18. Disable Web Services for Unknown File Types I haven't found the registry keys (the one's from Win XP don't work). Here's how to do it manually: gpedit.msc Under both Computer Configuration and User Configuration, enable "Administrative Template\System\Internet Communication Management\Internet Communication settings\Turn off Internet File Association service" Done.
  19. Also, if you have a dual-boot system with XP and Vista, you can also boot XP from the floppy. Copy bootmgr, BCD as described above and also add to the root of the floppy ntdetect.com, boot.ini, and ntldr. Note that bootmgr and BCD reside on the active, primary partition. So if XP is the active partition and is the primary partition, then Vista boot files will be in the XP partition. This occurs when you install Vista from within XP. Addendum Note: for the purposes of creating XP-only, Vista-only, or XP/Vista dual-boot floppies as described in Multi-boot Vista and Other OSes with Grub Menu, you should change your "Startup and Recovery Settings" in Advanced System Properties from within Vista. Save the settings, boot to XP, then copy the modified bcd file to floppy. You must do this each time you change the settings. Addendum 2: This boot disk will only work on your system and not some else's system. This is because bcd contains a unique GUID for your Vista installation.
  20. Here's a very easy way and undocumented (I think) way to make a Vista boot disk. 1) In Vista, format a floppy disk. Do not make a MS-DOS startup disk. 2) Boot into another OS or WinPE or BartPE (whatever OS gives you access to Vista files). 3) Copy "bootmgr" file from root of Vista to the root of floppy. 4) Create a folder called "Boot" on floppy. 5) Copy "BCD" file from "Boot" folder on floppy. Rest of the files in "Boot" are not necessary. If you are dual booting, then your "bootmgr" and "BCD" may be in your other OS partition.
  21. Anyone knows how to fix it?
  22. Is there a way to reset the folder views? This is so annoying. My D: partition has Vista. When I click on Computer (e.g. My Computer), I get the grouping by Type so all my partitions are grouped together and CD-ROMs are grouped together. This is the normal way. However, I have a partition called E: that also groups by type. So all the folders are grouped together and the file types are grouped together. That's annoying. When I change it to not group, all my drives in Computer also changed to that view. All my other partitions don't do that. Whatever I change in Computer the same thing happens to E: and Whatever I do in E: happens in Computer. But the rest (H: I: J:) don't do that. Aggravating. Any insight appreciated.
  23. Hi! I was trying to run command prompt as an administrator but the check box "Run as administrator" was greyed out. So, I took ownership of the file from "Trusted Installer" to myself. Then I modified the priviledges and messed up SYSTEM and Administrator's priviledges. I can't remember what privileges they have. How can I restore cmd.exe the way it was? I want to restore the owner back to Trusted Installer and the priviledge for the different users the way it was. Your help appreciated. Thanks.
  24. Yeah, it looks more capable than the one in XP. In XP, you couldn't resize partitions. With Vista, it seems you can resize... pretty much everything you can do in Partition Magic, just the terminology might be different.
  25. I thinks he's talking about the desktop icons for Network, IE, My Documents, etc. that were on Windows XP desktop. Check out HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons I don't know all the CLSID, play around with enabling and disabling and you should be able to figure out which one is which.
