  1. I was hoping for a location within the registry I could edit.
  2. So, why would symantec offer a product that is lightweight but semi useless? I thought that virus definitions are the same for both. Wouldnt it make sense that SAV would have access to the same virus database as NAV? If both products are current with AV definitions then shouldnt they (in theory) be equal?
  3. Hi, I have a friend that has a Dell PC. There is something called the "dell alerts" that always start upon boot. Its pretty annoying. Is there somewhere else aside from the Start Menu (startup folder), or using the MSCONFIG util? Is there somewhere in the registry that has other items that start up? Thanks, Rich
  4. I think the memory usage is what I would be basing it on. Is the protection level the same though? NAV 2004 / 2005 is quite a "fat" program. One would think that would make it more "secure". Is that the case?
  5. Hi all, I was hoping that someone could tell me the difference between Symantec Anti Virus & Norton Anti Virus. They seem to be made by the same company but seem to be two different applications. Is one better than the other? Is one of them easier on the system than another? Symantec anti virus looks to have less of a "footprint" on the system. Is this the case? Thanks, Rich
  6. Sorry about that. I forgot about microsoft Virtual PC. I meant the VMware. Thanks for the answer, that is much easier!
  7. Hi, Is there an easier way to transfer files from my virutal PC drive than using the existing network to transfer files? It seems like I am going from my PC, to the network, to the virtual PC when I could probably just copy it over. Rich
  8. I get .ra files so I am not sure if that makes a difference. That is also the only type of Real Media file I use. I just installed it & it worked like a charm.
  9. That did the trick! No more sluggish Real player!
  10. Hi all, I have a USB hard drive that is formatted in NTFS & its mostly great but when I go to backup data on my parents Win98 PC, I cant use my USB HD for the task. How do I go about formatting an external Hard drive that is currently formatted in NTFS & changing it to Fat32. There is no data on the drive that needs to be saved. I can scrap the whole thing. Thanks, Rich
  11. Hi, Whenever I get a voicemail, the server encodes the message in real media format & then emails the file to me. I am using an older version of Real player so it doesnt run like a dog (like the newer versions) but I would rather use the windows media player instead. Is there a way to do this? Thanks, Rich
  12. Hi, I have an unprotected winxp cd. By unprotected I mean, no activation or product key is needed when installing on any make or model Dell PC. I was curious how that works exactly? Would I look at the winnt.sif file or somewhere else to see whats on the disc to see how it works? Thanks, Rich
  13. Can someone point me in the right direction to find out how to make sure my old Calendar items dont get deleted? It seems that the default Calender settings get rid of my old items after the date passes. Is there a way to export the calender so I can reinstall windows without loosing my calender? Thanks, Rich
  14. Hi, I would like to add AOL 8.0 as an installed piece of software in my unattended CD. I cant seem to search for "AOL" (word is too small). Any help would be great. Thanks, Rich
  15. So, is the idea for us to unzip the nvidia drivers (& ATI) into the folder? Will it silently install the full driver / control panel?
  16. Well, that worked I think, the install didnt, but it made a 600K sized error file. Can you PM me your email address & I will pass it along to you? Or let me know what I should be looking for. Thanks, Rich
  17. msiexec.exe /lv* C:\officesetup.log /i <<name+pathofofficeMSI>> TRANSFORMS=<<name+pathoftransform>> /qb- Leet - say that my office directory is C:\office2003, the MSI is PRO11N.MSI the transform (thats the MST right?) is unattended.mst & is sitting in the main c:\office2003 directory What would be the path?
  18. This should be added to the setup.ini file in the X:/files/setup directory right? I added it to mine but I keep getting a product Key error message. Product Key invalid. Any ideas?
  19. So, do you mean that it should be part of the setup string, not the setup.ini file? ECHO. ECHO Installing Office 2003 ECHO Please wait... start /wait %systemdrive%\install\Office2003\PRO11N.MSI /QB EXIT Should it be something like this: start /wait %systemdrive%\install\Office2003\PRO11N.MSI PIDKEY="1234567890123456789012345" /QB The main reason I am not using the unattend.mst file is that everything I try to use it I get a product ID error, even though I am entering the correct one. I figured the simple method left less to error. Since I end up doing the default apps & locations anyway.
  20. I see it says: PIDKEY="1234567890123456789012345" but in my setup.ini located in x:/files/setup I dont see an [options] section, if I am supposed to put it in there, where in the setup.ini should I put it (or does it not matter?) ; Microsoft Office SETUP.EXE settings file. [MSI] ; The MSI section gives the name of the MSI file to install. This file must be in ; the same folder as Setup.exe, and both must be in the root of the installation ; tree. MSI=PRO11N.MSI [Product] ProductCode={91110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9} ProductName=Microsoft Office 2003 ProductVersion=11.0.5614.0 Recache=1 [Logging] ; The logging section provides settings for controlling the Setup log files. ; Value Default Description ; Type vpiwaeo Logging modes ; [a, c, e, i, m, o, p, r, u , v, ; w, *, +] ; Path %TEMP% Path to create logfiles ; Template SetupLog(*).txt File name for log file should end in ; "(*).txt"; the * is replaced with a 4 ; digit number to make the file name unique Template=Microsoft Office 2003 Setup(*).txt Type=piwaeo ;Path=\\MyServer\logfiles\ ;Template=Product %UserName%(*).txt [MinOSRequirement] VersionNT_1=500 WindowsBuild_1=2195 ServicePackLevel_1=3 [Cache] ; The cache section provides settings for caching the install source locally ; Value Default Description ; CDCACHE auto Option to specify cache level ; [auto, 0, 1, 2] ; LOCALCACHEDRIVE <predefined> Option to specify a drive to cache ; the install source to ; DELETABLECACHE 1 Option to display UI to remove the ; cache at the end of setup [0,1] ; PURGE 0 Option to always remove cache at end of ; setup [0,1] CDCACHE=auto ;LOCALCACHEDRIVE=C:\ DELETABLECACHE=1 PURGE=0 [OfficeWebComponents] MSI=OWC11.MSI
  21. One other thing. If I decided just to do the simple install (default settings are fine for me). Can I edit the setup.ini to add the PID="xxxxxx" If so, where would I put the PID code information within the setup.ini file? I couldnt find that info on the microsoft site (I understand how to use it, just not where to put the code).
  22. Mark, Were you having a problem with it accepting your product key? Rich
  23. Mine would be? REG ADD %KEY%\060 /VE /D "Office 2003 Professional" /f REG ADD %KEY%\060 /V 1 /D "%cdrom%\$OEM$\$1\Install\office2003\PRO11N.MSI /t unattended.mst /qb" /f
