  1. Hi, A friend of mine has two PC's in his house. They both have Outlook Express 6.0 on them. One of them prints emails with the left margins way to far over when he prints out emails. The other PC, prints normally. Since they share a printer over the network, it must be a configuration issue. Where is the template file, as I am guessing that it is what is causing the problems. I was able to find the Outlook (regular) new message template file, but not the OE 6.0 one. Any ideas? Thanks, Rich
  2. Hi, How would I monitor new programs to see if they are adding items to the registry, msconfig section, or Services.msc? I like to install new programs & usually do it on a VMWare PC (to make sure it doesnt hurt my main PC). I am never sure if I install something if it messes with the registry from a start up perspective. Is there a good program that can tell? Thanks, Rich
  3. Can I use this in the camera itself, or do I need a "flash drive" to pop the CF card into, to use this?
  4. Hi, I was looking at some pictures on my digital camera on my PC. WinXP adds the camera as another drive on my pc (when the camera is connected via usb & turned on). I accidentally deleted the photos off the camera (IE CF card). What program can I use to recover the photos/files on the card? Thanks, Rich
  5. Thanks for all the replies, lots of good info. A mapped network drive is what caused the major slowdowns on my system.
  6. I would guess that there are just way to many services starting up. I do not think its a virus (regular daily scans with latest virus defs). Hrm. Actually I do have one network drive mapped. Let me knock that off & give it a try.
  7. Hi, My XP Pro SP2 PC has been up & running for about 4 months. The main programs that run after start up are Norton Anti Virus 2004 & Microsoft ActiveSync. I have gone through MSConfig & the only thing checked under startup the only things still checked are: CCAPP (NAV) & WCESCOMM (Active Sync). I went into the registry & went to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run The only things in there are the two items above. There seem to be a lot of services listed under MSCONFIG that start at startup. I have not unchecked any of them but there seems to be a ton of stuff there. Is that safe to play with? Any other locations that I missed ? This PC is a 3.2GHZ, 1 gig ram, 74mb Raptor drive. It was very very quick when I did my unattended install on it & while I could do another reinstall (after a lengthy backup process), I would prefer to just speed this up. Win XP Pro boots quickly, & then hangs for about 30-40 seconds on the welcome screen. I am usually not in the room while the PC boots up so its something i just noticed. Thanks again, Rich
  8. Hi, I was curious I am in the middle of setting up a 2003 Server. The Network has a cable modem, plugged into an 8 port router, which then goes into some sort of hub. I am thinking that using the Router DHCP is better in the event that the server goes down (other computers on the network will be able to use the internet at least). What is the general opinion on this subject? BTW, are there any other forums that have a more active Server 2003 population? Thanks, Rich
  9. Oh, for testing I have Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition (5 Cd's) or I have Windows Server 2003 - Web Edition (1 CD), or Windows Server 2003 - Standard Edition (1 CD). What should I use for learning on? Will that be the same as whatever 25 user licence product he bought (or close enough?)
  10. Hey all, Ok, so I got to take a look at the office today & I was able to find out the whole story (its a short one). The office has 13 WinXP Pro "Client" PC's & 3 Macs (the macs can share files using a program called "Davids Software" - No idea what that is about but it lets the Macs log into the server & see the shared space). The XP clients, all have a login & password to a domain DAC.com (server domain name not a website). If the server is down, the XP Clients still need their username & password to access the client PC itself. The clients then log into a 2003 server which has storage space. The whole network is setup pretty simply, filesharing is the only thing they do (& Printsharing, but thats a Jet Direct issue, not a server issue). I am unsure on how to setup a 2003 server with a login & domain but I have a disk & VMWare so I will start messing around with it tonight. Here is where the story gets interesting. The office's prior IT person installed a "bootleg" version of Win 2003 Server on the server. So at some point it stopped working & failed. The Office manager ended up getting Win XP Pro installed on that same server (old 2003 machine) so the now XP server is only a file sharing storage spot. All the old XP Pro clients still need a username & password to get in, but they cant log into the DAC domain because the server is no more. They purchased a new Dell server & a legitimate copy of Server 2003 (25 user license) but the place they got it from online wont send it for some reason (not important to this story). Shortly the server will have 2003 server installed & I will need to set it up so that: 1. Clients can log in again 2. When clients delete files, the files aren't really deleted off the server but end up in a holding spot till the admin (hopefully me) can approve a deletion. 3. When an employee is fired, the PC needs to be locked down. Hopefully the server can handle this functionality so it can be done from there. 4. They have a username/password list, can I use their old usernames & passwords to enter into the new 2003 server so the client PC's don't have to learn a new task to log into the network? I would like it to be seamless on the employee end. Thanks again for all the help! Rich
  11. I agree. For some reason, if I remove Kazaa lite from my setup, the quicklaunch wont work. If I leave it in, Quicklaunch works just fine. Very Strange stuff.
  12. Well, I have a SP1 MS XP Pro Cd that came from the "action pack / partner program". Those 10 keys do not work on the SP2 MS XP Pro that also came from the "action pack / partner program". I have not tried the 1 key from the MS XP SP2 setup on the SP1, but something is a little different here. I know for sure that Microsoft is not sending out pirated software. Anyway, I am currently running a Nlite SP2 slipstream (onto a SP1 XPCD) right now, but I was just curious if there was an actual difference. Am I better off making a new XP CD from the new XP Pro SP2 cd I have?
  13. Hi, When I remove Kazaa Lite from my Runonce.cmd file, the windows install goes fine, but when I get to desktop, my Quick Launch bar is missing. The Quicklaunch is displayed, but the bar is missing. Meaning everything is checked properly but there is no way to remove it from my Runonce.cmd file. Here is what gets removed: REG ADD %KEY%\030 /VE /D "Kazaa Lite K++ v2.4.3" /f REG ADD %KEY%\030 /V 1 /D "%systemdrive%\Install\kazaalite243.exe /silent" /f When that code is removed from my runonce.cmd, for some reason that is what causes the loss of the quicklaunch. Could this have something to do with Nlite? Heres my Runonce.cmd file: cmdow @ /HID @echo off IF EXIST D:\CD.txt set CDROM=D: IF EXIST E:\CD.txt set CDROM=E: IF EXIST F:\CD.txt set CDROM=F: IF EXIST G:\CD.txt set CDROM=G: IF EXIST H:\CD.txt set CDROM=H: IF EXIST I:\CD.txt set CDROM=I: IF EXIST J:\CD.txt set CDROM=J: SET KEY=HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx REG ADD %KEY% /V TITLE /D "Installing Slipstreamed Applications" /f REG ADD %KEY%\001 /VE /D "Preparing Installation..." /f REG ADD %KEY%\001 /V 1 /D "%systemdrive%\Install\prepare.cmd" /f REG ADD %KEY%\005 /VE /D "Alcohol 120" /f REG ADD %KEY%\005 /V 1 /D "%systemdrive%\Install\alcohol\trial_setup.exe /qn Reboot=Suppress" /f REG ADD %KEY%\010 /VE /D "TweakUI 2.10 Powertoy" /f REG ADD %KEY%\010 /V 1 /D "%systemdrive%\Install\Powertoys\TweakUI.msi /qn" /f REG ADD %KEY%\020 /VE /D "WinRAR v3.41 Plus (Corporate Edition)" /f REG ADD %KEY%\020 /V 1 /D "%systemdrive%\Install\Winrar\wrar341.exe /s" /f REG ADD %KEY%\030 /VE /D "Kazaa Lite K++ v2.4.3" /f REG ADD %KEY%\030 /V 1 /D "%systemdrive%\Install\kazaalite243.exe /silent" /f REG ADD %KEY%\040 /VE /D "Nero Burning ROM v6.6.0.3" /f REG ADD %KEY%\040 /V 1 /D "%systemdrive%\Install\Nero\nero6603.exe /silent /noreboot /no_ui /sn=XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX /write_sn" /f REG ADD %KEY%\045 /VE /D "Office 2003 Professional" /f REG ADD %KEY%\045 /V 1 /D "%systemdrive%\Install\office.cmd" /f REG ADD %KEY%\050 /VE /D "Dreamweaver MX 2004" /f REG ADD %KEY%\050 /V 1 /D "%systemdrive%\Install\Dreamweaver\setup.exe -s" /f REG ADD %KEY%\050 /V 2 /D "taskkill.exe /F /IM IEXPLORE.EXE" /f REG ADD %KEY%\065 /VE /D "Office 2003 Professional Service Pack 1 Update" /f REG ADD %KEY%\065 /V 1 /D "%systemdrive%\Install\officesp1.cmd" /f REG ADD %KEY%\070 /VE /D "Cleaning Up and Rebooting..." /f REG ADD %KEY%\070 /V 1 /D "%systemdrive%\Install\cleanup.cmd" /f EXIT
  14. From my understanding, the office I am going to visit on Wednesday has a windows 2000 server that was setup with only a few PC's in the network. They have a new 2003 server that they want to replace the old one with. If its in a basic server environment, a server doing very basic things, is it that hard to look at it & figure out what is doing what? Like domains, why use a domain instead of a workgroup on a Win2000/2003 server?
  15. Hi, I am in the computer field & have never played with servers Win2k Servers before. Where could I read up on how to setup servers? I have a new client that has an old 2k server setup & wants to migrate a new 2003 server into its place. How much different is playing with a server than a normal workstation? I know WinXP Pro, pretty much inside & out. How tough would it be to mess around with a Win 2003 server? Is it night & day? Thanks, Rich
  16. Hi, I was curious. I had XP SP1 from Microsoft (in the MS Action Pack kit) & I used Nlite to slipstream SP2 onto my new SP2 CD. Later I was sent XP Pro SP2 from Microsoft (again part of the Action Pack update) and I was curious, is one better than another, or are they both the same? The reason I ask is my XP SP1 setup came with 10 CD Keys from Microsoft & my XP SP2 only came with 1 key. I would probably stick with my Nlite slipstream if there is no difference. I called Microsoft to find out what the story was & they said that they only give one SP2 key. I said if I were a new Action pack subscriber, would they send me 10 SP1 keys & 1 SP2 key & the tech said yes. So is there any difference in a Nlite slipstream SP2 cd (made from a SP1 cd) vs a Microsoft "official seal" SP2 cd? Thanks, Rich

  20. Hi, Internet Explorer is not opening to a full screen size. If I maximize the screen it is full screen, but when I open up IE again, its at half screen (or wherever I left the screen previously). Any ideas on how to fix that? Thanks, Rich
  21. Hi, I just got my Microsoft Action Pack subscription update (well I got it a week or two ago, but finally opened it up). I noticed I have a 2 CD version of Windows XP Media Center Edition. What exactly is the difference between this & regular XP Pro? Is it worth installing on a PC that isn’t connected to a TV or audio device (aside from regular speakers)? Anywhere I can find out some details on the difference between XP Pro & XP MCE? Thanks, Rich
  22. Hi, I have a powerpoint presentation I am giving & using an older projection screen TV to display it. The problem is that at 800x600, its still to hard to see on the screen. I know the TV is part of the problem, but if I could run XP at 640x480, that would be helpful. I am using an ATI 9600 Turbo (Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop) video card. Any help would be great! Thanks, Rich
  23. Is it better than IE? Isnt Winxp & IE all one item? Can you get rid of IE? Why would I want to do so? Does Firefox do something better than IE?
