The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs
jaclaz replied to Gradius2's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Sure. But they are NOT responsible for: the theft, loss or however damaging of your drive (sure they - or the UPS guys - might either refund you or give you a new disk) the recovery of data on the drive (of course they will attempt to revive the disk, but if anything goes wrong they will give you a nice, new, empty drive) Unfortunately it has already happened: http://www.msfn.org/board/seagate-barracud...-page-1154.html http://www.msfn.org/board/seagate-7200-11-...4-page-223.html Life is tough , everyone has to take his/her chances, in my personal estimation, the risk of the DIY is less than the "send it to Seagate" alternative. jaclaz -

OT, but not much, you don't normally need the VLOOKUP to assign the "textual" day of the week. You can format the cell as "ddd" and link it to a date allright, then use WEEKDAY() on it to have the 1 to 7 value that you may need to choose among different formulas. jaclaz

I didn't imply it was funny , only that it seemed to me "queer" to ask in English to read carefully AND understand a Russian text. jaclaz

See if this is what you need. I had to add an "OT 3.00" and "OT 4.00" to have totals correct, if I understood the reasons for the sheet. The example is "expandable", and it can be bettered, but I kept it as simple as possible in order to give "inspiration" to you. jaclaz Demo_revised.zip

@dencorso I'll try again re-submitting (pushing ) DCOPY: http://users.telenet.be/jbosman/applications.html You must use DCOPY as follows: DCOPY source target [options] source: This can be a drive (A: or B:) or a file (a disk image) target: This can be a drive (A: or B:) or a file (a disk image) - You cannot specify a disk image for both source as target. - You can specify wildcards with source disk image names. - When you create a disk image with .ZIP extension, the disk image is automatically compressed with PKZIP. - When you restore a disk image with .ZIP extension, the disk image is automatically uncompressed with PKUNZIP. The zip file must contain a file with the same name, but with extension .IMG options: /s : Use a swap file instead of extended memory. /c : Use conventional memory instead of extended memory or swap file. With this options enabled, the copy process must be done in multiple passes. /v : Verify if data is written correctly. The data is read again and compared with the original data. /f : Always format target disk the same as the source disk. /vo : Verify only a disk, do not copy. A target drive is not necessary. /fo : Format only a disk, do not copy. A target drive is not necessary. /f:x : Use a predefined disk format, this can be 160,180,320,360,720,800,1200,1440,1600,1722 Every format indicates the capacity of the disk in Kbytes. /a : Autodetect the disk format, this is done automatically if the disk is a non-DOS disk. When used with the /fo option, the disk is formatted at the highest possible capacity. (You will need a TSR like FDREAD that enables you to read the disk) /a1 : Autodetect the number of sectors per track at every track. This is usefull for some forms of copy protection, where the disk is formatted with a different number of sectors at some tracks. /a:x : Retry to read/write a track x times in case of a read/write error. /sk : Skip all read/write errors. /t:x : Use x tracks. /n:x : Use x sectors per track. /s:x : Use x sides. /qm : Quiet mode, does not make the silly beeps. /i:x : Use an interleave of x. /ss:c: Use Sector Spinning of x. Changing this number may speed up/slow down the copy process. /hs:x: Use a head settle time of x. If your drive reports read errors, you can try setting this value to at least 25. /fs : Do not use FAT selection. /x:n : Make/Restore n disk images. Dcopy will create or restore n disk images from/to disk. The images have the name you specified as first or second argument with the extension .001 to .n /co : Compare two disks. Reads the first disk and compares it with a second disk. You can also compare disks with a disk image. /fdr : Creates an executable called fdread.exe on the target disk. This program allows you to read the extra high density diskettes. This option is only used with the /fo option. /q : Does a quick format. Writes only the logical information, does not really format the disk. This option is only used with the /fo option. jaclaz -
multiboot of xp also needs virtual floppy
jaclaz replied to doubleoseverin's topic in Install Windows from USB
NO, NOT VMWARE! The only known, working way, at the moment, is to integrate the proper Mass Storage driver in the Source. Usually the Drivers Packs cover almost any hardware. Which "netbook" is it? EXACT model/make, please. POSSIBLY a link to the manufacturer site's page(s) for the model. Also check if by any chance you have a setting in BIOS like "IDE compatibility mode" or "ATAPI emulation" or something like that, or anything however connected to the HD controller jaclaz -
Shrinking C: partition will not free up space on hdd
jaclaz replied to The Metal God's topic in Windows Vista
Yes it could, but I wonder WHAT could have caused it. I mean, a problem may be that of "overlapping" partitions, i.e. partitions that extend in the partition entries in the MBR over other partitions. The result would be the opposite to the one you are referring to, i.e. there would be apparently more space used by the sum of single partitions than the one actually totally available. Or maybe this happened before and this shrinking actually corrected values? Another possibility is that for any reason, the first partition (9.76 Gb one in the screenshot, with NO letter assigned) instead of starting "normally" at CHS 0/1/1 or LBA 64 starts after some 60 Gb from the beginning of the stick? What you can do is check with a tool like beeblebrox: http://students.cs.byu.edu/~codyb/ and or a Hex editor (advised tiny hexer + my Structure viewers for it): http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=8734 http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?...c=8734&st=8 If the MBR is "kosher". To simplify life, you may ask your friend/customer to use this app: HDHACKER http://dimio.altervista.org/eng/ to save the MBR (First sector of PhysicalDrive #0) and send it to you (and if you want you can post it and I'll have a look at it) jaclaz -

I'll try typing slowly, in an attempt to re-word cdob's initial post : there ... has ... been ... yet ... NO ... successful ...report ...of ... mapping .... a ... virtual ...floppy ...with ...grub4dos ... to ...add ...Mass ...Storage....drivers! It is pointless going over this path, as it will lead you to NOWHERE. (at the most you can have the floppy recognized during TXTmode part, but then it will become unavailable during GUI part of the setup, unless you have found a new, and till now undocumented method to re-hook the virtual floppy image with a "protected mode" driver). 50% working is better than 0% , but even if you get to 99,999%, still 0,001 wil be missing to succesfully install. jaclaz -

Good idea I did some more "cleaning by splitting" of recent issues. Maybe it's time to do a "global" splitting, like I did on boot-land for Amalux's Tutorial (which was going as well "out of control"): http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showforum=31 jaclaz

@macster @ilko_t What if I split the group of posts and make a new separated "specific 7& vs. 8&" thread, in order to "lighten" the present "general" one? jaclaz

Nothing gets me to GUI-mode setup, please help!
jaclaz replied to gland9's topic in Install Windows from USB
Well, what the heck! I am still bewildered from the fact that the initial part of the setup managed to copy some files to the SSD. Most probably next attempt should be to use a PE for the install, though I still find very strange that the drive is not detected: http://www.msfn.org/board/install-xp-usb-a...sb-t121446.html I am short of other possible ideas. jaclaz -

Something is really strange, (hd0) is the stick, and (rd) is the grub4dos built in ramdisk. Your SSD device is NOT detected by grub4dos! Are you sure you don't need a disconnect/connect or reboot or something the like? Does that thingy has anything "strange" that can be set in BIOS? jaclaz -
OK, defintiely it is not .net, and also not C#. What did the good Microsoft guys use to write their OSes? Quick Basic? Plain C? C++? jaclaz

jaclaz replied to gland9's topic in Install Windows from USB
That's strange, the BOOT.INI seems fine, as it points to first partition of first disk, which should be the SSD (once the stick is not attached). grub4dos seems to be able to detect only the USB stick (I presume that the device is a 2.039.869.440 i.e. 2 Gb stick partitioned with wimb's or steve6375's tool, as it has a second partiton type 21, FAT16 formatted). Still in grub4dos, try: [ENTER] and find ( [TAB] and post result, it is almost as the SSD is NOT detected as a hard disk. jaclaz -
Shrinking C: partition will not free up space on hdd
jaclaz replied to The Metal God's topic in Windows Vista
Theoretically a "recovery DVD" should do a Recovery, i.e. NO matter what is on the hard disk make it exactly as it were at the time the "snapshot" was taken. But there should have been also a "base recovery DVD" (if not given together with the PC) capable of restoring to "factory", including the hidden partition. Is it possible that user completed only a part of the creating "recovery DVD"? i.e. by snapshotting only his "user" partiton and not the hidden one? The whole thing about this "stupid" procedure is a logic loophole, you do a "backup" and the only way to test if it went allright and it works is by testing it overwriting your current working partition(s). If for any reasons something went wrong when saving, you cannot restore properly and you are stuck. jaclaz -
The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs
jaclaz replied to Gradius2's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
The first is a USB to TTL. If you don't mind some work with the soldering iron, yes. The second is a RS232 to TTL, actually successfully used by the maker of a "sister" guide: http://www.msfn.org/board/solution-seagate...-page-1762.html http://www.mapleleafmountain.com/seagatebrick.html Being notoriously cheap, if I were US based I would use one of this (example) USB to TTL: http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-To-TTL-Converter-M...id=p3286.c0.m14 You should check what you have as an option on e-bay, these ones seems nice too: http://cgi.ebay.it/CP2102-USB-To-TTL-Conve...id=p3286.c0.m14 http://cgi.ebay.it/CP2102-USB-TTL-RS232-Se...id=p3286.c0.m14 or one of these, RS232 to TTL: http://cgi.ebay.it/MAX232-RS232-Serial-to-...id=p3286.c0.m14 It all depends on what is best for your country, sometimes you can find better prices on e-bay than on local (or national internet) stores, sometimes it is the other way round). Just for fun I would like to point out how this smart guy here: http://cgi.ebay.it/INTERFACCIA-RS232-3V-TT...id=p3286.c0.m14 sells for €39+5,50 P&P=44.50 (including the "special" cable to connect to Seagates) an interface remarkably similar to this one: http://cgi.ebay.it/INTERFACCIA-RS232-TTL-3...34.c0.m14.l1262 which he sells for €15+2.50 P&P=17.50 In my book, it means that the difference betweeen this: http://i21.ebayimg.com/01/i/000/97/24/62c5_1.JPG and this: http://i.ebayimg.com/07/!BSujW-wBGk~&a...jtLnJQ~~_12.JPG i.e a cable, a CR2032 and it's holder+ the HD connector is valued €27.00 It is worth to mention this part: http://cgi.ebay.it/INTERFACCIA-RS232-3V-TT...id=p3286.c0.m14 Bolded Italic part translating to: The connector on the HD side is an original 2 mm pitch original american, this is important as otherwise there is a risk of losing the data on the HD jaclaz -

One of these? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314477/en-us It is possibly a mis-entry in BOOT.INI. Do you have "other" mass storage devices (that could "confuse" the program)? Try booting from the stick, and at grub4dos, press "c" to enter command line mode. Issue a few commands: geometry (hd0) [ENTER] geometry (hd1) [ENTER] geometry(hd2) [ENTER] Post results. Post also contents of the BOOT.INI on the SSD. jaclaz -
You can PXE boot allright. Browse around here: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showforum=12 There are a few different ways. jaclaz
