  1. VERY good. Those are EXACTLY the two points for which we don't (yet) know for certain WHAT consequences they may carry. Theoretically the second idea should work, but there is NO guarantee of it. I would advise you to make a "dd-like" i.e. a "forensically sound" image of your entire hard disk "as is" BEFORE attempting to go along the path you sketched, in the worst of cases, you can always restore the disk exactly asd it is now, and try another method, if that one fails. Better be safe than sorry. I mean, you have a GREAT advantage over the other people that posted their problems in this thread, you have a WORKING F11 and Recovery partition, why risking forfaiting this advantage? Always keep an emergency way out open, whenever possible. jaclaz
  2. You are right, as always. Clean explanation would be nice. However, wouldn't 6,7 and 8 & ParentIDPrefix & 0 cover all possible cases when USB/memory stick is prepared on 2k/xp/2k3 machine? This means 3 letters... And maybe it would also solve the "racism" issue about letter V: : U: V: W: Yes , I do like it better than: U: W: And the "Association for the promotion of a wider use of letter V in drive assignments" will probably stop nagging me. jaclaz
  3. YES/NO. This is ONLY an example, that can be used in a batch BUT it loads EITHER a program "custom.exe" OR another program, "normal.exe", if a given path exists ("d:\music") at the time when it is executed. You can setup CMD.EXE (the batch interpreter for .cmd scripts) as Shell, but you will have an "ugly" Console open all the time (and you CANNOT close the shell, as it will be re-started automatically). You do seem needing to read a bit about the topic (Shell replacement and batch - or other forms of scripting) as right now you appear as not having a clear idea of how the things work. At this point I have to ask you a question: Is your custom menu (the one you posted a scrrenshot of) an existing app, or was the screenshot just a "mockup" to clear what you would like to achieve? If the custom menu actually exists in which language/script was it written into? ANY programming language or script interpreter known to mankind will be able to replicate the behaviour of the few lines of the snippet by Tripredacus, or, in other words with which programming language and/or script interpreter are you familiar with? jaclaz
  4. Yes, though the solution is far from optimal. If I get it right you will have a number of batch files in the root of the USB stick that you have to run, one for each app. There are "better" ways to do the above, here is an example: http://www.pegtop.net/start/ jaclaz
  5. And since the actual size of the device is the same, unless the 640 Gb has an additional platter when compared to the 500 Gb, you have greater chances that the "finer pitch" with which data is recorded might be a cause for data loss. The whole idea of a backup is that it should be reliable: reliability, right now, is mainly given by redundancy of devices. jaclaz
  6. I already posted for you some links. First ones are about the "theory of operation", this one: http://mattcollinge.wordpress.com/software...ect-and-launch/ is an app that does EXACTLY what you need, i.e. polling periodically the USB bus and recognizing (by LABEL) if a given USB stick is inserted, and if the condition is verified do something. The snippet by Tripredacus can be translated in batch easily: IF EXIST d:\music ( custom.exe ) else ( normal.exe ) or in any other language, but you will need something that EITHER: "senses" the insertion of a USB devices and starts the above OR: calls periodically the program If you want to learn some batch or VBS scripting, this iste is a good starting resource: http://www.robvanderwoude.com/ jaclaz P.S. Maybe (and don't take it is an offence ), if you don't know which language to use, you may want to search for existing already programmed apps, like this one (only an example): http://www.touchjams.com/default.asp http://www.touchjams.com/default.asp?page=features (WARNING, demo only available, US$ 49.95 one time donation for full app required)

  8. Also, you may want to tell your dad about a couple of guys which started hacking together things in a garage.... http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/n.../dayintech_0404 ...I can imagine little Bill's dad (an Attorney) telling him some wise words : "Look son, why don't you just go to Law School...." 9. Two notes: while beeblebrox is Freeware, PTEDIT32 licensing status is UNKNOWN (but you don't need to subscribe to the forum, it can be found on symantec's FTP), see here: http://thestarman.pcministry.com/asm/mbr/BootToolsRefs.htm the PQSERVICE partition is "typical" (besides ACER, which I didn't know about) of DELL's, for which very interesting notes/methods exist: http://www.goodells.net/dellutility/index.htm http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/index.htm Of course how much of the above apply to the ACER is for you to find out, your mileage may vary. jaclaz
  10. Sure. But they are NOT responsible for: the theft, loss or however damaging of your drive (sure they - or the UPS guys - might either refund you or give you a new disk) the recovery of data on the drive (of course they will attempt to revive the disk, but if anything goes wrong they will give you a nice, new, empty drive) Unfortunately it has already happened: http://www.msfn.org/board/seagate-barracud...-page-1154.html http://www.msfn.org/board/seagate-7200-11-...4-page-223.html Life is tough , everyone has to take his/her chances, in my personal estimation, the risk of the DIY is less than the "send it to Seagate" alternative. jaclaz

  12. OT, but not much, you don't normally need the VLOOKUP to assign the "textual" day of the week. You can format the cell as "ddd" and link it to a date allright, then use WEEKDAY() on it to have the 1 to 7 value that you may need to choose among different formulas. jaclaz
  13. I didn't imply it was funny , only that it seemed to me "queer" to ask in English to read carefully AND understand a Russian text. jaclaz
  14. See if this is what you need. I had to add an "OT 3.00" and "OT 4.00" to have totals correct, if I understood the reasons for the sheet. The example is "expandable", and it can be bettered, but I kept it as simple as possible in order to give "inspiration" to you. jaclaz Demo_revised.zip

  16. The only M900-7 I can find is this one: http://okfan.en.alibaba.com/product/226517...ailpageLocation but the specs seem like different. , maybe it's an old model of the same? The RDC site (makers of the HD controller) seems like offline. QZD is another factory in Shenzhen: http://qzd.en.alibaba.com/ See if you can spot your laptop among these: http://qzd.en.alibaba.com/productgrouplist...pc_Netbook.html jaclaz
  17. @dencorso I'll try again re-submitting (pushing ) DCOPY: http://users.telenet.be/jbosman/applications.html You must use DCOPY as follows: DCOPY source target [options] source: This can be a drive (A: or B:) or a file (a disk image) target: This can be a drive (A: or B:) or a file (a disk image) - You cannot specify a disk image for both source as target. - You can specify wildcards with source disk image names. - When you create a disk image with .ZIP extension, the disk image is automatically compressed with PKZIP. - When you restore a disk image with .ZIP extension, the disk image is automatically uncompressed with PKUNZIP. The zip file must contain a file with the same name, but with extension .IMG options: /s : Use a swap file instead of extended memory. /c : Use conventional memory instead of extended memory or swap file. With this options enabled, the copy process must be done in multiple passes. /v : Verify if data is written correctly. The data is read again and compared with the original data. /f : Always format target disk the same as the source disk. /vo : Verify only a disk, do not copy. A target drive is not necessary. /fo : Format only a disk, do not copy. A target drive is not necessary. /f:x : Use a predefined disk format, this can be 160,180,320,360,720,800,1200,1440,1600,1722 Every format indicates the capacity of the disk in Kbytes. /a : Autodetect the disk format, this is done automatically if the disk is a non-DOS disk. When used with the /fo option, the disk is formatted at the highest possible capacity. (You will need a TSR like FDREAD that enables you to read the disk) /a1 : Autodetect the number of sectors per track at every track. This is usefull for some forms of copy protection, where the disk is formatted with a different number of sectors at some tracks. /a:x : Retry to read/write a track x times in case of a read/write error. /sk : Skip all read/write errors. /t:x : Use x tracks. /n:x : Use x sectors per track. /s:x : Use x sides. /qm : Quiet mode, does not make the silly beeps. /i:x : Use an interleave of x. /ss:c: Use Sector Spinning of x. Changing this number may speed up/slow down the copy process. /hs:x: Use a head settle time of x. If your drive reports read errors, you can try setting this value to at least 25. /fs : Do not use FAT selection. /x:n : Make/Restore n disk images. Dcopy will create or restore n disk images from/to disk. The images have the name you specified as first or second argument with the extension .001 to .n /co : Compare two disks. Reads the first disk and compares it with a second disk. You can also compare disks with a disk image. /fdr : Creates an executable called fdread.exe on the target disk. This program allows you to read the extra high density diskettes. This option is only used with the /fo option. /q : Does a quick format. Writes only the logical information, does not really format the disk. This option is only used with the /fo option. jaclaz
  18. NO, NOT VMWARE! The only known, working way, at the moment, is to integrate the proper Mass Storage driver in the Source. Usually the Drivers Packs cover almost any hardware. Which "netbook" is it? EXACT model/make, please. POSSIBLY a link to the manufacturer site's page(s) for the model. Also check if by any chance you have a setting in BIOS like "IDE compatibility mode" or "ATAPI emulation" or something like that, or anything however connected to the HD controller jaclaz
  19. Yes it could, but I wonder WHAT could have caused it. I mean, a problem may be that of "overlapping" partitions, i.e. partitions that extend in the partition entries in the MBR over other partitions. The result would be the opposite to the one you are referring to, i.e. there would be apparently more space used by the sum of single partitions than the one actually totally available. Or maybe this happened before and this shrinking actually corrected values? Another possibility is that for any reason, the first partition (9.76 Gb one in the screenshot, with NO letter assigned) instead of starting "normally" at CHS 0/1/1 or LBA 64 starts after some 60 Gb from the beginning of the stick? What you can do is check with a tool like beeblebrox: http://students.cs.byu.edu/~codyb/ and or a Hex editor (advised tiny hexer + my Structure viewers for it): http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=8734 http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?...c=8734&st=8 If the MBR is "kosher". To simplify life, you may ask your friend/customer to use this app: HDHACKER http://dimio.altervista.org/eng/ to save the MBR (First sector of PhysicalDrive #0) and send it to you (and if you want you can post it and I'll have a look at it) jaclaz
  20. I'll try typing slowly, in an attempt to re-word cdob's initial post : there ... has ... been ... yet ... NO ... successful ...report ...of ... mapping .... a ... virtual ...floppy ...with ...grub4dos ... to ...add ...Mass ...Storage....drivers! It is pointless going over this path, as it will lead you to NOWHERE. (at the most you can have the floppy recognized during TXTmode part, but then it will become unavailable during GUI part of the setup, unless you have found a new, and till now undocumented method to re-hook the virtual floppy image with a "protected mode" driver). 50% working is better than 0% , but even if you get to 99,999%, still 0,001 wil be missing to succesfully install. jaclaz
  21. I cannot get much out of a PDF without Line and Row numbers. Can you attach a sample spreadsheet? jaclaz
  22. Use VLOOKUP. Example: http://www.msfn.org/board/excel-formula-request-t99059.html jaclaz
  23. Good idea I did some more "cleaning by splitting" of recent issues. Maybe it's time to do a "global" splitting, like I did on boot-land for Amalux's Tutorial (which was going as well "out of control"): http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showforum=31 jaclaz
  24. @macster @ilko_t What if I split the group of posts and make a new separated "specific 7& vs. 8&" thread, in order to "lighten" the present "general" one? jaclaz
  25. Well, what the heck! I am still bewildered from the fact that the initial part of the setup managed to copy some files to the SSD. Most probably next attempt should be to use a PE for the install, though I still find very strange that the drive is not detected: http://www.msfn.org/board/install-xp-usb-a...sb-t121446.html I am short of other possible ideas. jaclaz
