Windows 10 GWX Update Removal Tool for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

Well, then you might enjoy this .pdf about hacking an Iodd/Zalman Ve-400 encryption: https://www.sstic.org/media/SSTIC2015/SSTIC-actes/hardware_re_for_software_reversers/SSTIC2015-Article-hardware_re_for_software_reversers-czarny_rigo.pdf I guess the moral is that sometimes it is not important where you go but rather the path that you choose to get there ... jaclaz -
Windows 10 GWX Update Removal Tool for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

I am failing to see the interesting part. Nothing has seemingly changed, there was only a hiccup in interpreting the logs, soon reviewed, corrected and explained. Or am I missing something? jaclaz -

Remember to post this under "News". WHERE EXACTLY do you think the NUSB is developed? http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/43605-maximus-decim-native-usb-drivers/ BTW latest are 3.5 and 3.6 versions: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/43605-maximus-decim-native-usb-drivers/?p=1062027 jaclaz

Well, IMHO with the current average very powerful hardware that non-mobiles or non-phones have, it would have made much more sense, it would have been easier, and would not have provoked all this mess to keep the Windows Phone OS as a OS for phones (with Metro/NCI, stupid full screen for everything and low-low screen density, etc. or *whatever*) and write a simple and fast VM-like program to emulate it. Basically you would have had your own stupid Lumia as a physical device and an exact replica of it (virtual) on your desktop screen, the best of both words with little or no annoyance. jaclaz

Mildly interesting that someone not savvy enough to have foreseen Microsoft's moves is now ranting. We have had people around here foreseeing Microsoft doing bad things with Windows Updates for a very long time. -Noel Well, being Dedoimedo the other person that by definition is always right, you may want to check when he introduced his re-known finger salute to MS: http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/windows-8-1-beta.html He did have a brain fart when he actually *somewhat* liked Windows 10 (october 2014): http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/windows-10-preview.html but soon he came back to his senses (February 2015): http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/windows-10-preview-build-9926.html and now everything is back to normal. jaclaz

I don't know. But Andre Da Costa has a record of being extremely confident in what he writes but also rarely accurate (JFYI): http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/173665-a-comment-i-posted-on-w10-tp-forum/ jaclaz

Try to imagine multiplying that handful of hours (subtracted to work) by millions to have an idea of how this flawed approach can affect the world economy... MS is making a large part of their userbase loose time (please read as money or as "amount of alternative fun"). I am pretty sure that your friend will remember this next time he will go shopping for a new device or Operating System.... jaclaz

Well, but AFTER having made experiments (crazy or not) you should clean the mess, that file is a remnant of a 2012 experiment: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/156859-drive-order/?p=1005343 which you reported as having been deleted: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/156859-drive-order/?p=1005499 Maybe you restored a BOOT.INI from a backup copy made at that time before it was removed. jaclaz

And for the record, very often jaclaz uses the attribute "stupid" referred to products and documents Microsoft creates and to decisions they make, and very rarely (if ever at all) to themselves as a whole, as a matter of fact jaclaz believes they are good guys , like anyone else (though when "en masse" definitely stubborn and maybe also sometimes unfriendly or non respectful of the customers). Certainly there are some among the best programmers around working for Microsoft, whose good work is usually ruined (or made far less evident than what would otherwise be it's worth) by wrong decisions of the management or by completely failed perceptions of the marketing guys or by the convolutions of their legal team. Of course there are exceptions to this general rule of "they're all good people", some examples of people: the guy that decided to use a Registry Hive format for the BCDthe lady that pumped up the Office Ribbonthe visionary that decided to go "all in" on touch and one-size-fits-all Windowsthe policy maker that promoted the continuous and forced updates model those must have (or have had) some cognitive disorders or were at the time under the effects of some substance. jaclaz

But can you choose the entries in BOOT.INI? It is likely that the thing that issues the message you reported is the "C:\Windows7.bin", which you really shouldn't need/want, as most probably by re-formatting/reinstalling you made some pointers in that file invalid (and should you need it, it needs to be recreated) but you already have the default: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS (which points to a windows on first partition of first disk) and the grub4dos entry: C:\grldr (that loads th grldr and than the menu.lst through which you can boot the Windows 7 on second disk, first partition) Check the disk order in BIOS and verify that the Windows XP install is on first partition of first disk or (temporarily) add a few lines to the BOOT.INI to try non first partition, like here (this is for 2K, though the principles are the same): http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/25365-bootini-and-different-hard-drive/?p=173823 or here (this is for XP) http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?s=&showtopic=24649&view=findpost&p=170210 jaclaz

I found funny the coincidence that MS (who was evidently not able to write a good enough cross-platform schedule/agenda in the several years since Outlook came out) had bought/acquired Wunderlist the same day they promised that the stupid update to the stupid Windows 10 can be *somehow* scheduled. jaclaz

Which video card has it? By any chance a Nvidia GeForce GO (possibly a 5200 or 5700)? Some of these cards (of course proprietary) have a known issue that through a clever combination of manufacturing issues, poor cooling or both tend to overheat, to the point that the BGA contacts become defective. BUT usually this affects (with not so much different symptoms) both the internal display and the external connection, so while it is possible that the issue is the same it is hard to definitely say it is. IF the issue is the BGA, nothing but a reflow of the GPU will solve it (and of course replacements for the proprietary cards are either not available or sold at "crazy" prices). A DIY/poor man's reflow of the chip is possible: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/fix-laptop-motherboard-with-failed-nvidia-graphics-chip/ http://www.addictivetips.com/hardware/fix-your-graphics-card-by-baking-in-oven/ though of course risky and without any guarantee it will work, whilst a professional one is likely to go into the hundreds of bucks jaclaz

The: typically comes from a bootsector created (when a particular specific command line is used) by BOOTPART. Still typically this bootsector is loaded by NTLDR from an entry in BOOT.INI. What are the current contents of BOOT.INI on your disk 0? Can you now boot to *something*? If yes, HOW EXACTLY? (like booting to the Windows 7 changing BIOS drive order)? jaclaz

For me a suitable time-slot would be between 08:30 and 11:30 PM on January 14, 2020, I wonder if this can be scheduled now . Surely the newly acquired[1] Wunderlist app: https://www.wunderlist.com/blog/our-future-wunderlist-joins-microsoft/ https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2015/06/02/welcome-6wunderkinder-microsoft-acquires-wunderlist/ will be able to have one year ahead horizon, so this might give me almost one year, from April 9, 2019, to test Windows 7 while still using XP.... jaclaz [1] Please note how Wunderlist talks of "joining MS", whilst MS talks of "MS acquires", the choice of words could be telling something....

There are some very interesting pieces of data in that article: If you divide 4.000.000 by 1.500.000.000 you obtain 0,0026666666666666666666666666666667. The raw numbers are impressive the percentage not so much . If you consider how (likely) the very limited user base that took part to the insider program is also not qualified for *anything* (and anyway all comments/reports/bugs have been basically ignored when not perfectly aligned to the pre-made agenda or "vision" for the new os ), and that the participants have not been selected as a "random sample" of population, it is easy to see how failed are both the "democratic" and the "statistical" approach. THe good news is that now we have, from the mouth of the wolf some valid numbers. A minor flaw in the update system affecting only 0.1% of users means more than 1 million people with botched systems. jaclaz

What is it about Spartan that you find the tiniest bit interesting?
jaclaz replied to NoelC's topic in Windows 10
Well, of course in a perfect world you would not need fences or guard rails, the issue here is however more like road bumps. Since everyone sped too much in an urban area, the municipality disseminated everywhere a lot of road bumps to force citizens to drive slower. The net effect is usually that of having a much higher shock absorber and brakes replacement rate and a lot of people with back aches, whilst the average speed (and the number of incidents involving bikers and pedestrians) remain substantially stable. A guardrail or fence prevents you from doing something (like jumping over the cliff) without a lot of effort or accidentally, i.e. it is a rather effective safety measure, highlighting a border you should not cross for your own safety, you don't normally need to cross it, while a road bump only makes your driving less comfortable and it is right in the middle of your daily path to work or home. As a side note (OT) musical roads are nicer and funnier: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_road but people living nearby do complain, you can't have everyone happy . jaclaz -
@bhplt From experience, and once said that I find, like the board skin, the possibility for the final user to change the shell to one of his/her liking a basic freedom, a line needs to be drawn. I do understand how there is the need for company PC's to have a "same" shell so that as an example workers that use the same machine on subsequent shifts or that move from one workstation to another find themselves in a "same" graphical environment. Unlike most people that don't like the NCI and that wish the return of the "classic" UI, I find that the NCI, notwithstanding it being an abomination of ugliness and lost functionalities is well within the fair choices of the MS (demented) designers for the new OS's, of course I wish they had made it more easily swappable with something else, but this possibility of changing the shell should be available only to final "single" users or - alternatively - company wide. What I consider a form of perversion is the sheer idea of a third party of proposing to apply a NCI like interface over an actually good, working and tested one, but much more than that this snippet: http://www.iobit.com/en/iobit-winmetro.php send shivers down my spine as all these years I managed to be fairly productive using an accessory called "window" to look outside and see what the weather is, another one called casually wall calendar to see what day it is (even during a blackout) and had no §@ç#ing news and stocks on the desktop to distract me from work. The app in itself is ok, the message IMHO much less so, something like: would have been more truthful . jaclaz
