  1. I'm working on a friends 98SE installation, and I've managed to clean up all the freaking problems except for this one. Mprexe caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0167:bff7a4b2. Nothing I try can get rid of this. I've attempted all the suggestions from a google search such as taking everything out of startup via msconfig, and re-installing IE, but this problem persists. Suggestions besides reformat are very welcomed!
  2. Actually, this is not quite the case anymore. The retail versions that you buy in the store do come on media, but the media is not required to install or play half-life 2. Steam was updated months ago to match retail with online offerings. If you use the media that came with the retail package, you will not be required to have a CD in the drive to play. In otherwords, buying retail will give you the exact same thing as buying off Steam. One note is the silver and gold versions are not available at retail, so if the additional games and features offered buy those versions are important to you, purchase off of Steam. As far as buying off of ebay, note that you are not buying a key, but rather somebody's old account. Be very careful, as there has been many problems with people auctioning off their accounts, only to report to VALVe that their key has been stolen. To date, VALVe has always sided with the scammers, as reselling your account is not allowed. It would be in your best interests to read the Steam forums for further information, specifically http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/show...threadid=267303
  3. OK, the problem seems to be from WinRAR not letting the menu options appear if I use the .iso location in the registry. If I rename default for the .iso folder in the registry from "WinRAR" to something like "Optical Disc Image", then my custom menu items appear. Why is this? Seems odd that if a filetype has a default action than no other menu items will appear in the context menu. Oh well...
  4. I want a right-click option for .ISO files to be sent to my favorite burning application. [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\Burn with Nero] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\Burn with Nero\Command] @="nero.exe /w %1" However, this adds the menu option to all files. I only want the option to display for .ISO and .NRG files. How? ETA: If I use ".iso" instead of the "*" above, I don't get a menu option for .iso files.
  5. Why would one want to increase this connection limit, as evident with the patchers/hacked installation files available?
  6. I tried searching for this situtation, but came up empty. I have just installed Windows XP Pro with slipstreamed service pack 2, as well as RyanVM's most excellent Post-SP2 ugprade pack, using nLite to integrate. Problem is, now all the folders on my system are read-only. It doesn't matter if I clear the attribute, the folders remain read-only. I don't see this having an affect on the system, but it is rather bothersome that it is happening, and is irritating when looking at the properites dialog. Is this by design, or can I "fix" it? Note that this is a single, non-networked machine with no shares.
  7. Oh, no offense taken. Unfortunately, I have much more to worry about in life than someone's choice of forum software. I agree that a commercial site has more resources and speedier development. Case-in-point, the over 2 year development period of phpBB3. However, speedier development does not necessarily mean a better product. Yes, invision has 5x more built-in features, but many if not most were phpBB "mods" before being added to Invision, and let's not forget where Invision's style came from... a blatant rip of phpBB. I'm not saying this is a bad thing-- once again, the open source community improved the product that you choose. We're all winners.
  8. Well say what you will about phpBB, but it is important to note that the page, as well as others attacked at the same time, was taken down using an exploit in awstats, and had nothing to do with phpBB. As far as redundancy, the area51 server (now offering support), knowledge base, and IRC support channel are still online. Granted, an open sourced project isn't going to have the financial backbone paid applications will, but that does not prohibit them from making very good software, or offering great support. I ask how many hours has the phpBB server experienced downtime over the past year? Just because you can point to one incident doesn't mean a think. Even Microsoft's mighty services fail from time to time, especially hotmail and instant messaging. One can't point to a singular incident and make a blunt statement "see what phpbb get's you?".
  9. phpBB has the best community and the best price. Additionaly, the new phpBB 3 "Olympus" (beta due in March) is awesome
  10. Thanks for the response. That closewin.exe would be the PERFECT application if it also included "Switch User" and "Log Off". I'm trying to simply my dock, and would like one icon to control all of these functions instead of having the current three.. (log off, switch, shutdown).
  11. I tried a google search, but I can't seem to find an application that fits the bill. I would like a very basic application that when launched presents a menu that offers "Switch User", "Log Off", "Suspend", "Restart", and "Shut Down". I don't want applications that run in the background. Anyone?
  12. Thanks for the response, but alas, that is what I am doing. From my winnt.sif: [Unattended] OemPreinstall=Yes UnattendSwitch="yes" UnattendMode=FullUnattended OemSkipEula=Yes TargetPath=\WINDOWS FileSystem=* OemPnPDriversPath="Drivers\007_printer" DriverSigningPolicy=Ignore NonDriverSigningPolicy = Ignore Stupid add hardware wizard. It says nothing about the drivers not being signed, it just says "This wizard helps you finish..." then I click next, then I get "This wizard has finished..." and I click finish.
  13. Hello. I have placed my drivers in a directory and edited winnt.sif to point to these drivers via the drivers guide on msfn (http://unattended.msfn.org/xp/drivers.htm) Anyway, now when windows reboots and starts executing my entries in RunOnceEx.cmd, and my printer is plugged in, I get an add new hardware wizard that tells me windows found my printer and is ready to install. I have to manually click next and finish to complete the driver installation (although the runonceex.cmd contents are still being installed in the background). The printer drivers are working, and they are what I want, but I would rather not see the add new hardware wizard. Anyway to make it automated? I suppose I could use autoit in my runonceex.cmd file to automagically click the buttons for me, but is there a better way?

    Process toggler?

Thank you very, very much, Yzöwl. That works perfectly for my needs. @Jeremy, I have also disabled many of my services, but there a some that I need to run occationally and I wanted to have an shortcut that would easily enable or disable the service as I see fit.
  15. Is there a way to toggle a process? I wish to check if a process is running. If it is, stop it. If it isn't, start it. I know nothing of any scripting methods that would accomplish this. TIA!
  16. Nevermind. Found it! http://kb.mozillazine.org/index.phtml?titl...Folder_Location
  17. Hello. I am just about completed with my unattended installation. I only now need to copy my mail and server settings for Thunderbird. I find this directory in Documents and Settings: ...\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\default.qdt\ Here I find Mail, which obviously has my mail folders. But what about Filters, Junk Mail Controls, and Server Settings?
  18. Hello. I got it working like this: msiexec -i "VMware.msi" INSTALLDIR="%ProgramFiles%\VMWare" ADDLOCAL=ALL DISABLE_AUTORUN=1 SERIALNUMBER=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /qn (Note: I renamed the .msi file, but you don't need to.)
  19. Free Download Mananger eh? Gotta link? I'd just google, but I can guess the results...
  20. I notice all the pinned items for "best" software lists, and find the lack of a firewall thread shocking, SHOCKING!!! WinXP included sucks. Tried ZoneAlarm trial... seemed to be OK, Used to use Outpost a year ago, but got tired of the bugs, Currently settled in with Sygate. What are you using?
  21. Video editing software is largely format dependant. If your capture is DV, I'd highly recommend Vegas Video. If it's not DV, look elsewhere.

  23. Are you trying to install from a read-only device?
  24. Hello. I create several users using a useraccounts.cmd called from cmdlines.txt. I am trying to customize these users, but I think it must be impossible. net user User1 /add net user User2 /add Now, if I create files/folders/etc... in $Docs\User1 or $Docs\User2 to be copied over during Windows install, they do copy over, but when these users actually login for the first time, windows doesn't use these folders. Instead, a $Docs\User1.COMPUTERNAME folder is created, bypassing the default. This shows $Docs folder to be useless. So, I am wondering if it is possible to create a runonce entry in the registry that will be executed when these users first login. If it is possible, where in the registry can I put these runonce entries so User1 will get User1's info, and User2 will get User2's info?
