  1. There is nothing wrong with the M$ server. I just updated this morning. Latest update is #5671.
  2. If it shows in Device Manager, just open Disk Management, find the drive, format it and assign a drive letter. Reboot and it will appear in My Computer.
  3. SOLVED: My son went over with all of my instructions from the forums and myself. Removed both the modum and Nic card and drivers. Did a system restore prior to my installing the Nic card; uninstalled TCP/IP and reinstalled; put in a new modem; put dial info in Control Panel> Phone and Modem setup; Setup a Network Connection and it works. Unfortunately he did all of this at one time, so we don't know which deed fixed the problem. But I thank everyone for their help!
  4. I'll have to wait awhile for a final solution to this as they left for Houston saturday to help down there.
  5. Asin: Thanks very much; I think this may solve the problem, but I won't know until sunday. I think they got so frustrated that they went to a bar for a FEW "Adult Beverages" and don't answer the phone. I've been running systems since 1999, but have never had a dial-up phone connection-just Cable. I will answer later if they call and arn't too wasted!
  6. warrior1109: Yes we have and we can't change the selection from Broadband to a Dial-up connection thru a Modem. It won't uncheck Broadband.
  7. The only service disabled since installation was Windows Firewall because I like Sygate. Using any form of network connection wizard to select "Connect using a dial-up modem" can't be selected---period. It's stuck on Broadband Connection only. Her ISP is thru her company (NO CD) and her has all of the info from them to manually install but can't enter thr info. Her ISP has NO idea what to do for her! Under Control Panel>Network Connections is blank.
  8. I need help. I installed XP+SP2 ( blanked the drive of ME & reformatted NTFS) on my daughter's computer who lives 600 miles away. I put in a NIC card so I could get on the internet for Dell drivers; activation and anti-virus updates. She ONLY has a winmodem for dialup connection thru phone line. The Network Connection Wizard will not allow a Dial-Up connection, just Broardband. She uninstalled the NIC & modem in device manager, shutdown & removed both cards; reinstalled the dialup modem, which is found in device manager and says it's working with the same results. Add a new network connection will NOT allow a dialup connection. Tried a new modem with same results. Any ideas before I have her do a complete XP Repair from her CD???
  9. You can always force the installation. Start computer from a Windows 98/ME emergency boot disk. From the MS-DOS prompt, run SmartDrive disk caching utility (Smartdrv.exe); and then start Windows Setup using the Winnt.exe command. Don't use Winnt32.exe because it won't run from dos. You can also run fdisk first to eliminate the non-dos partition if it's NTFS. Bios boot order>floppy,cd-rom,hd.
  10. Don't understand your second question. Using these programs remove the copy protection on your backup copy, it doesn't remove from the original. If your trying to add the original copy protection to a backup copy, good luck; can't be done!
  11. What did he use to reformat? Make sure bios is set to boot from the CD-ROM.
  12. It won't install on any Server operating system. Acronis "TrueImage" makes a server version that works much better than Drive Image!
  13. According to the Microsoft book "Windows XP Inside/Out" you MUST disable the XP supplied burn software (limp version of ECDC 5.5) when installing ANY third party burn software. If you don't believe me read page 854. Open Windows Explorer, right click all of your burners, select Properties, Advanced tab, and uncheck "Enable Recording on this drive". In some cases you may have to uninstall any third party burn software to do this, and then reinstall your third party burn software.
  14. Wasn't Marrathon Man. And will post on doom.9: Thanks!
  15. Can't do this. It was filmed in widescreen. You can change your Player/TV to 4.3 Letter Box and it helps a little.
  16. No: It wasn't "Boys From Brazil". I have this movie, and the one I'm looking for came out about ten years later. I've found people that remember the exact movie, but no one can remember the name.
  17. I didn't know where to post this, but I need help. I saw a movie about 8 years ago and can't remember the title (I'm over 60 and memory is fading). It was like "The Boys From Brazil", but was about a secret world wide organization of Nazi war criminals including the camp doctor. The doctor was suppose to be the son of one of the camp doctor's but in fact was the original doctor who had prefected a way to make all of the wanted people younger. Members come to his clinic for treatment in a well guarded castle in europe. A group of CIA people are trying to find out if theis organization really exists. Much mystery. Please help if possible.
  18. Do a google search for free "CopyLock" program. This will eliminate any file during a reboot.
  19. Killdisk is a different program than listed above. It works fine and does eliminate everything on the drive. But be careful using. Only have the drive you want to erase in your system. If you have more it will KILL all of them. There is another program that will do the job; "Boot'n Nuke". Be careful again, as it will wipe all drives installed!
  20. Just bought Pioneer 108 Black from newegg for $81.00.
  21. PS: If you need NTFS Dos Pro (Read/Write), I can email a fully functional version with a 30 day expiration. My email address is: dick4711@mchsi.com
  22. It's been awhile since I've run NT, but have had your problem before. There are a few ways to repair. Using an ERD: If your system files become damaged or your computer won't start, the ERD should fix the problem. If your Winnt directory is FAT, you can boot to Dos and copy files from your ERD to your Winnt\System32\Config folder. If it's NTFS you'll need your original NT 4 CD and the three floppy disks to reinstall NT. Run the floppy until the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R. As the message on the screen explains, pressing R causes setup to repair a damaged Windows NT installation. Setup will check each Windows NT file on your hard disk, and replace those that are corrupt. Setup then uses the information from your ERD to restore the registry and security database. If you don't have an ERD, you will probably have to reinstall NT 4 right over the top of your old installation. This will eliminate any service packs unless you have them slipstreamed into NT.
  23. There are two great programs that will fix the problem. Both are free downloads; do a google search for "MoveOnBoot' or "CopyLock". You can replace, delete, modify ANY file. Be careful what you delete.
  24. Ardi: I'm also using the A7V8X mobo and SP-2 works just fine. I'm using bios 1013.
  25. I assume you installed XP as ACPI. If not go into Power Options and enable "Advanced Power Management. The next thing is in the registry: Under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and change the value "PowerdownAfterShutdown" to 1. Next go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion and create a new key called "Shutdown", and then under this key create a REG_DWORD value called "ShutdownSetting" with a data of 3. I've had to do this in the past, especially after SP-2. Also my W2000 system sometimes does this because it didn't completely load all of the boot files; I then just hit the Reset button on the tower, reboot and it then works fine and shutdowns perfect.
