  1. Making backups of DVDs is legal in most countries as long as there for personal use only. This guide will state a few different methods one might use. Method 1: (Free) DVD Decrypter Auto GK Download Auto Gordian Knot and DVD Decrypter. Open DVD Decrypter and save the decrypted DVD somewhere on your hard drive. Next, open Auto GK and select the VTS_01_0.ifo file. Normally, that contains the movie files. Select the language and also audio and subtitle options. Configure the size you want the end product. Make sure you have an output file selected and add the job to que and start. Method 2: (Free) DVD Decrypter HandBrake Decrypt the DVD as in method one, but this time open HandBrake and select the folder with the decrypted DVD. Configure size and codecs. There are also presets for portable devices. Method 3: (Free) DVD Shrink You can use DVD Shrink by itself to open a DVD, remove certain features, remove protection placed on the DVD, then save it to a location. Method 4: ($75) =(X) AnyDVD HandBrake AnyDVD will automatically decrypt a DVD when you put it in your computer. You can then use HandBrake to rip it. Method 5: ($75) AnyDVD Auto GK This you basically just do the same thing as method 1, but AnyDVD decrypts it instead of DVD Decrypter. Programs and Functions: AnyDVD - Decrypt DVDs almost instantly without copying large files Auto Gordian Knot - A GUI making it easier to rip DVDs (contains many different tools) DVD Shrink - Copy DVDs, decrypt them and also shrink there source DVD Decrypter - Copy the files of a DVD to your hard drive without the copy protection HandBrake - Convert DVD files and other media files to single file videos such as avi and mpeg Magic DVD Ripper - An easy to use program for ripping DVDs to single media files Where to find programs AnyDVD AutoGK DVD Shrink - Official Website Download DVD Decrypter HandBrake Magic DVD Ripper Pros and Cons: AutoGK vs. HandBrake AutoGK - More Reliable (in my opinion), simple inferface, more control over subtitles; audio and video, HandBrake - More formats, more platforms, presets for popular devices DVD Decrypter vs. AnyDVD AnyDVD - $75, almost instant, no need for dvd copy, possibly decrypt more types of protection, automatic DVD Decrypter - Free, must copy DVD to hard drive, must configure options
  2. I have an old Gateway Essentials 500 machine that the video card is starting to go bad on. It still works fine otherwise, just not ready for normal use. Here are the specs: 497MHz Intel Pentium III 512MB RAM 20GB HD 100Mb/s Ethernet card I want to use it as a file/web server. I plan on using Apache as the web server so any OS should work. WinXP is extremely slow on it, so that, and newer operating systems are out of question. I was thinking on Windows 200 or Windows 2000 Server. I looked at the specs and Windows Server 2003 or Windows Home Server may work too. What would be the best on it?
  3. It looks kind of like the Vista Mystify screen saver, except the lines don't expand, they stay the same width. There's about 4 lines of multiple colors, they look like the glowing Vista colors. Anyone know a screensaver like this, I forget to backup it up when I reformatted. (WinXP Screensaver BTW) Flurry's it!! I remember the name. TY a bunch.
  4. I like 7zip better as a program and how the context menus are formatted, but WinRAR .rar file is supperior compression. I wondered at one point and tested all 7zip supported formats at various settings and then tried WinRAR and RAR came out on top.
  5. CLOSED. Making a multiboot cd. Download CDShell. Extract to /Boot Add .iso files to root. 6. Is it possible to slipstream the 66MB SP3 that you download from MS Update instead of the 350MB from the Windows Download Center? I hope to get rid of some of the unnessecary junk in the Download Centers version of SP3. Is there a reason why the manual download is so much larger?
  7. Check out this YouTube video. It shows how to use AegiSub along with VirtualDub to make yourself custom subtitles on movies.
  8. You could try a different approach. You could use Alcohol 52/120 and rip them as a disc image (iso or mds) and that would make a perfect 1:1 copy. Then to use them, you would make a virtual drive under Alcohol or Daemon Tools and mount the image. DVD Decrypter will make a decrypted copy of the DVD files on your hard drive.
  9. Yes, I've done it before. There's a tab under the options menu where you can change the settings such as bit rate and to location it will save the ripped songs.
  10. HandBrake(GUI) is great as already suggested. If the disc is copy protected you may need to use AnyDVD. To convert video formats MediaCoder and SUPER and both great programs.
  11. IMGBurn seems to erase them just fine. Thanks.
  12. I want to erase some CD-RWs I burnt a while back. The only problem, the erase option doesn't show up in Explorer when you put the CD in. I can't get Nero to work either. It only happens on certain CDs (maybe finalize was checked). I erased other CD-RWs from the same pack and had no problems. I can put in Ubuntu Live and use tools on it to erase the CDs windows won't, but then I have to stop what I'm doing and with the amount of CDs I have, it may take a while. Anyone else with this problem and know any way I might be able to erase these without live linux.
  13. Follow MS instructions. Apply the reg tweaks with RunOnceEx. This talk is fine since windows needs WGA to validate. That means no features such as updates will work without genuine windows. Like I said genuine windows requires WGA anyway.
  14. Think this would work better than silent installers? Install the program on a clean Windows install and track all changes using Thinstall or a similar program along with Regshot unicode 2.0. Save the reg files as a .reg file with Regshot unicode 2.0. Copy all the installed files to the appropriate $OEM folder. EX. $OEM$ >$DOCS >>USERNAME >>>Application Data >>>>MyProgStuff >>>>>Files.dat >$Progs >>MyProg >>>ProgramFile.exe And then, use RunOnceEx to add the registry keys. This would allow you to copy the files and ignore getting installers to work. Plus you could modify program settings before you package it up and put in in the $OEM$ files. You won't have to worry about waiting on the installer since it would copy it during setup. You wouldn't have to worry about the restart either. What do you guys think of my idea?

Sandboxie is good so running the program in isloated space. To monitor everything its doing, use Sysinternals (now Microsoft) Process Watch programs such as Process Explorer (TaskManager), Process Monitor (you can set its filters to a certain .exe and also to "Create/Modify Files", also Regmon REgistry Monitor (haven't used it yet). Just check out all the programs on the page linked. All are completely safe and are reliable. Link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...c84cb9e2f5.aspx
  16. There are multiple ways to host a file from your computer. 1. You could create your own web server. Check YouTube for videos on "Apache Server" 2. You could use a online file hosting service: a. Rapidshare b. Email based (LiveSkyDrive, GoogleDocs, YahooDocs) c. MediaFire d. Box.net e. Other 3. A free program like PodMailing (makes a sort of torrent like file) Google PodMailing and read about how it works. 4. Online services like those others mentioned
  17. You could place it in the startup folder and use a batch file to delete the shortcut when it runs. startup batch.bat start %homedrive%\script.vbs del "%homedrive%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up\Script.Ink" REM You may need the silent delete switch del %homedrive%\script.vbs del %homedrive%\batch.bat exit
  18. I swear I have some kind of problem. I had all kinds of problems and finally got them fixed. When I reinstalled XP, I had a partition with all my files already on it so Windows XP assigned my Windows drive E:. (Also had a DVD Drive) I wanted to change it back to C: like a normal WinXP computer would be. I tried to change it with partition magic but now the new C: drive freezes at the "Windows is Starting Up" screen. It also won't boot in safe mode or last good known config. I made PM Boot Disks, but don't know how to fix this. What do I need to do? The system boots, It won't load the startup screen. . . I hope I've provided enough details. I'm using Ubuntu right now and can burn a WinPE CD if I have to. I copied C: and made a clone of it (E:) DriveMapper (PM) ran and now Windows is running off both drives. LOL Any quick fixes?
  19. Install Partition Magic and found out it was hidden! Unhide fixed it!!! Thanks for all the quick suggestions. CLOSED!! I originally had my hard drive configured like this: OLD CONFIG- WinVista 40GB C: (Bootloader) WinXP 60GB D: File Storage 120GB S: Ubuntu (ext3) 60GB NEW CONFIG: 60GB E: Windows XP DVD-RAM D: 120GB Storage drive (not visible in explorer) Some of my Vista files became corrupt. I decided to delete the Vista partition and figured I'd just use the WinXP CD to restore the Windows BootLoader after the VistaBootLoader was deleted. Didn't work. Messed with my harddrive and ended up deleting all the partitions except the Storage partition with all my files. Now I have Windows XP installed and the storage drive is not showing up. Following answers, I installed Partition Find and Mount. It found my S: partition and mounted it. Its not writable? Everytime I reboot I have to run Partition Find and Mount and mount the unwritable partition again. I'll grab a screenshot of Disk Manager. Full Picture (Magnifying Glass to see clearly) Everything but delete and help is locked on the Storage partition right click menu.
  20. Anyone have any ideas? Load FailSafe Defaults in BIOS does nothing if I forgot that. If I install over top on XP it will reset the registry right?
  21. I finally got an operating system working on my PC. I had Vista and it was controlling the MBR and bootloader and all that. Some of the operating system was corrupt and I decided to delete the partition thinking that I could just use the Windows XP CD to recover the bootloader and MBR. That didn't work right. It took me around 6 hours to get a working operating system besides live cds. I'm using Ubuntu right now. When I choose XP from the GRUB boot menu I get this error: A error has occured in the disk. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to restart I can still access the partition from Ubuntu fine though. I don't have any external drives to backup on. So I need to either fix it, or keep it intact. 1) How your disk is setup (how many partitions, which type, etc) HD0,0 WinXP Primary HD0,1 Ubuntu Primary HD0,2 Storage (file storage) Primary 2) What is in the Grub menu.lst entry that you try to boot with title Windows XP root (hd0,0) savedefault makeactive chainloader +1 3) Which kind of source XP CD you have (recovery CD, Full Install, OEM Install, etc.) Full Install 4) How did you try (and failed to) install XP I tried to do a repair, but it wouldn't let me boot to the partition to finish the repair.
