  1. Do You know where i can download the latest version of kernel ex for windows 2000? I am having trouble locating the files on blackwingcat site because it's all Japanese!!
  2. I took my trusty nforce2 system and installed the September updates 1 by 1 with the following results: ALL net framework updates will NO longer install on SSE1-only processor. Internet explorer update installed just fine! Office compatibility pack: I do NOT use it so I can not possibly know! Windows updates: kb4338381 installed just fine! kb4457163 installed just fine! kb4458000 testing FAILED! kb4458001 installed just fine! kb4458003 installed just fine! kb4458006 installed just fine! kb4458318 installed just fine!
  3. Has anyone tested the new updates with a SSE1 - only system? Do they all require SSE2?
  4. I have installed Windows 7 on an old Athlon XP machine with the following specs: CPU: Athlon XP 3200 M\B: Abit AN7 nforce2 ultra RAM: 2*1gb Corsair GPU: Leadtek geforce 7800gs. HDD: Maxtor 80gb SATA DVDRW: some IDE model. The system is running just fine with all the drivers installed and I can browse the web, play videos and mp3's with no problem. The only major hurdle is the lack of SSE2 instruction set that prevents many software form installing. I must say that the same system with Windows XP SP3 POS updates installed is running much, much better: all the benchmarks are scoring at least 25% higher and the system feels more responsive. I will post screenshots when I get home!
  5. After starting one of my old systems this morning I noticed the CPU usage is 100% because of windows updates eating all my CPU! I disabled automatic updates and tried manual updates but the result is the same: 100% CPU usage and it is still searching for updates! Any ideas how to fix this? This behavior also manifests itself in the second XP computer and another one with windows 2000!
  6. 1. link to the relevant topic: 2. link to the Offfice Xp post sp3 update pack: https://www.dropbox.com/s/j0zdwe4woufmp80/OFFXPPostSP3.zip
  7. Thank you very much sir! After searching the forums I found on page 2 of this subsection a topic created by XPCLIENT with all office XP updates in a single package! Maybe someone can create a package with all office 2003 post SP3 updates - I will try to downloaad them all and see what I can do!
  8. I just installed windows 98 se on my oldest running machine and now I got to install office. As the latest version of office for windows 9X is office xp I installed that one however and I can’t find sp3 or any other uptates for it. Maybe some forum member can help me out with sp3 at least. Thank you very much.
  9. Then I got a serious problem here! On 3 different systems with XP and MSE 4.4 I got the same message! I am going do download MBAM to do a complete scan! Thank you anyway.
  10. I am talking about version 4.4, the one that does not nag the XP user with the message: support for this operating system has ended; not about the latest version.
  11. Since 14 of april 2016 there is no longer possible to update MSE; after multiple attempts on several systems the result is always the same: error code 0X800700c1! My guess is microsoft stop porting MSE updates to XP version of MSE! What good AV can still be used with XP - good performance and low on resources?
  12. Really great! Congrats rloew! Does that means we can use nvdia cards generation 8XXX and later? I ask because 7XXX cards are getting really hard to find in my country at least but nvidia 4xx and later are in good supply.
  13. I also use Windows XP as main OS together with office 2003 and found no reason to move beyond it; when i comes to productivity XP is still king! I also have 1 PC with Vista installed but I used that one only for gaming. I do not upgrade very often and I found that on old computers XP reigns supreme - don't believe all that people that tell you that windows 8/7 runs better on old hardware, it's all BS!! My main browser is Firefox, latest version.
  14. It worked!!! Deleted the key in the registry, installation went smooth, running IE7 on real hardware at the moment!! Thanks a lot! Now to setup the other 89 pc's left...
  15. Downloaded a copy from the link above. No luck! Installed XP in a virtual machine, SP2 only; IE7 installed just fine! Removed IE7 and installed SP3; afterwards installed again IE7. Installation went smooth, no problems. Must be some of the post-SP3 updates or the regfile used to transform XP in POS!
  16. 1. standalone installer. 2. yes, reg patch applied! 3. windows update does not offer IE7.
  17. That's the problem! Event viewer shows nothing related to the setup of IE7; the setup starts and aborts with the message: IE installation did not complete; please restart your system and that's it! IE6 is the only browser installed; no other browsers were ever installed on these systems.
  18. For compatibility purposes I am trying to install IE7 on several machines that have windows xp sp3. All other updates except IE and WMP have already been installed. However I am unable to instal IE7; the installation fails every single time and I could not find a workaround yet; searched the net and nothing came up! Any help it's much appreciated.
  19. I do not understand: why no support for Xp after april 8 when server 2003 which has the same kernel is supported until july 14 2015! It would give time to users to move if they want to and MS would use the same people that make patches for windows server 2003 to test those patches with XP!
  20. Thank you very much sir you just solved my problem!
  21. New install of windows 7 pro using retail DVD! Everything just fine untill I do an office install. Windows update does not show any updates for Office only Windows! In windows update settings the option: microsoft update give me updates for microsoft products IS missing! What am I doing wrong? Also the option software notifications: show me detailed notifications is missing. Sorry for the double post I ask one of the moderators to please delete the other one!
  22. Flasche you wanted me to show you what I use so here it is! Complete specs: Motherboard Asus k8n-e with Nvidia nforce3 250 GB chipset; this motherboard has chipset, audio and network drivers available for windows 98. When I start a new build the first thing I choose is the motherboard which I think is the most important piece of hardware in the pc. The board has 3 memory slots unlike most other boards that have 4 which is a minus! Also the board has an AGP connector which I think is a big plus for windows 98! The processor is an Athlon 64 3200 with the real frequency of 2200 MHz; the performance is very close to a P4 running at 3200 MHz; the CPU is very cool with the box cooler and clocks down automatically to 1000 when not in use so heat is never a problem. Memory is made up of 2 identical modules from OCZ, 1 gb each. From reasons yet unknowns it has been impossible for me to run the board with all 3 memory slots populated! The drives are all WD: 1 40 gb and 1 80 gb both PATA, 1 250 gb and 1 320 gb both SATA. I have a dvd-rom and a dvd-rw installed to the other PATA connector. I use the PATA drives with windows 98; the SATA with XP! They never see each other as I disconnect the XP drives when using 98 and vice-versa. The video card is an Asus geforce 6800gt with 256 mb and windows 98 drivers available. The card has a power connector so I have an antec 550w power supply which is overkill but I prefer to be on the safe side! The final piece is a very old creative live 5.1 audio card that has windows 98 drivers available. Although I limit the memory to 1 gb when running 98 the above configuration is STILL faster with windows 98 than with XP! Your best bet for a windows 9X/ME machine would be one based on socket 939 for which you can still find cheap motherboards. Any board with Via chipset would run perfectly under 98! The main problem I see would be the video card – any higher than geforce 7XXX series represents a huge problem (I don’t have experience with ATI cards)!
  23. I already see a problem with your motherboard: Chipset ATI Radeon Xpress 200 for Intel Processors which is a very low performance chipset and also with compatibility problems regarding Win 9X! For best performance, stability and compatibility with 9X I would use intel chipsets; nvidia would come second and VIA third!
  24. I strongly urge you to reconsider your opinion! Pentium 4 is a very hot CPU and I saw several systems with 3.6 GHz models that throttled under load. I serviced a lot of Pentium 4 systems and I still do today and everything over 3.2 GHz is a danger to itself and the motherboard. The box cooler is a very bad joke and unless you buy a third party cooler like arctic freezer 7 pro you are going to have serious problems in keeping that CPU cool! From personal experience the best windows 9X system would be one based on socket 754 or 939. I still have from December 2004 an Athlon 64 computer that runs 98SE like a charm without any glitches whatsoever. If you like I can put a complete description on the forum.
  25. My impressions after running Vista X64 business since January 2007: the operating system is incredibly stable; no matter how much bad software I installed and how many weeks I left it running it will not crash! It starts and shuts down faster that XP on the same hardware! It is also compatible with everything I need and ever used since 7 years ago – it may be possible that the OS is not compatible with specific or very old software and some exotic hardware. Windows updates for vista and 7 are the same – I downloaded on purpose a kb for 7 and installed it on vista with no problems. Now for the bad point: the OS uses only for himself 1 gigabyte of ram and that is without third party programs; with them it goes up to 1.2 gigabyte of ram – I have 4 gb of ram so this is not a problem for me but by comparison a test install of windows XP 32 bit uses 200 mb of ram! Also vista is more secured then XP – of course the underlying problem remains: the user is still the biggest “threat“ and if you just click away on every link you will get malware on your system really fast!
