  1. Modified the driver, made changes to the registry, yet still I am unable to get google street map to work, keep getting the message that I need flash 10.

The funny thing is I was on a house hunting site, and it had a map where the house was, and underneath it had a line that said click here to view google street map, so I did click it expecting it not to work, but it did work.

So it works when a particular link to an address is embedded on a web page, but doesn't work when I type in an address manually on Google.

  2. I usually get my cartridges from Tesco for my Epson 680, but recently I noticed they had none of the E182 Colour or E172 Black, and I wonder if these are being produced now?

Can anyone that uses a compatible ink for the 680 please say which one they use and are they reliable.

If this has been put in the wrong place then I apologise, but I couldn't see a place for printers only.

  3. So I take it that it was a good idea when I entered a new registration number into my Avast 4.8 some time ago when it then gave me an update expiration date of 01st October 2010, so it looks like this gave me a reprieve for another few months.

Has anyone tried a new registration recently? as I would be curious as to what date it would give this time for expiration, or maybe when you do this now the program will simply stop working, I don't know.

    frogman,

I registered Avast! 4.8 on a Win98SE computer the other day, and I got a license expiration date of 01 June 2011. I did this in mid-June, so I can't be sure if the system defaults to the first of the current month or if that means that everybody's 4.8 licenses die as of that date. I suspect it's the former, which would be a good thing.

This is all much better than I had come to understand -- which is that Alwil was going to stop issuing definitions updates for Avast! 4.8 at the end of 2010. I was prepared to see an expiration date sometime in December '10.

    Hope this helps.

I just took a chance and registered again just to get a slightly longer expiration date, and the expire date is now 01st August 2011, although the program 4.8 will probably be ceased well before then, fingers crossed.

  4. so what are you guys running for a/v? i noticed my win 7 is still running avast 4.8, witch works on 98

Avast 4.8 until the licence expires (only now valid on a couple of rarely used machines), and then ClamWin with ClamSentinel.

Some said recently that Windows 98 can actually run safe enough without an AV program, being that it is a well known out of date system, and virus writers aren't that bothered about attacking 98, when they are more interested in more recent operating systems.

Is anyone using ClamWin, and have they ran into any problems running this non-realtime AV prog?

  5. Am I right in saying that there is an option for 32 or 64 bit systems when purchasing Windows 7?

What I mean is I could choose 32 instead of 64.

Btw, the Nero essentials is no good to me as I need most of the features that aren't available in those versions.

And as far as using WMP, well that is no use either as it creates 2 second gaps in each track division.

  6. Nero 6 will NOT work...

Oh dear, so this means I won't have Nero for burning if I have Windows 7.

You would think that as I got the Nero CD with Nero 6 on it with a burner that they would offer a free upgrade.

It looks like I may need to purchase a Nero bundle when I move to Windows 7.

  7. Honestly, Windows Firewall + Microsoft Security Essentials has been enough for almost everyone I've installed it for - the only time it wasn't, we were infecting the machine on purpose (and even then it wasn't easy to do! :)).

Will she have the Microsoft Security Essentials already, or will she need to download it?

Is this the link for it and is it a genuine Microsoft link do you know?

  8. Most likely you will not be able to turn windows firewall on at all while mcafee is installed and running :(

    But you can try this:

open mcafee and disable its firewall, then try starting windows firewall. Mcafee's hook should be released doing it this way.

You were correct, that worked for her, many thanks.

One last question, will the Windows Firewall be enough security for windows 7?

  9. Most likely you will not be able to turn windows firewall on at all while mcafee is installed and running :(

    Thanks for that.

I though that because we had no internet connection for this laptop that may have been the reason why it was impossible to disable both mcafee and Windows Firewall.

At the time it looked like both firewalls could not be tampered with, however I will tell her to remove mcafee and un-install it.

  10. My partner has Windows 7 on her laptop, and when we go to the security firewall section it shows Mcfee & also Windows Firewall, the latter being off and the Mcfee is on, but will expire soon, but for some reason the button would not radiate to allow to turn on the Windows Firewall.

Can anyone help please, and should we be able to turn on the Windows Firewall, is this enough?

  11. I hope to get a custom built computer soon with the very latest OS Windows 7.

I have various questions that I would like to ask, but I don't want to ask them all at once as I often think by doing it that way it can get all too confusing.

If I go for Windows 7 will all my 32bit programs become obsolete? some of which are on CD such as Nero, and Surething CD labeler.

More questions to follow but one at a time.

  12. I report the Google Street View is still working on my 98 machine after using the modded driver method and renaming the 2 instances of flash 9 in the registry.

The following observations were made using Firefox 2.0.0.20 on a win-98se system. Changing the flash version number in the registry is not necessary when using the modded flash DLL (NPSWF32.dll). Transplanting version 10.0.12.36 of NPSWF32.dll into a system that does not have KernelEx does not work (no flash content is rendered). The modded DLL works for google street view and youtube, but does not work when trying to view *any* flash video on msnbc.com, even if the browser user-agent string is completely spoofed to appear as a Win-XP system running Firefox 3.x.

As an additional mod, the "Windows 98/ME" string was changed to "Windows XP" in the modded NPSWF32.dll, but msnbc.com video remained unplayable. The string change did appear to be recognized by Adobe's Flash-tester and version-reporter web page, indicating that the system was running Windows XP (changing the browser user-agent string alone was not sufficient).

    Conclusions:

    1) KernelEx (version 3.6 and probably higher) combined with Flash 10 (version 10.0.12.36 and possibly higher) seem to work fine on win-98se systems running Firefox 2.0.0.20 as far as rendering flash video content from all sources.

    2) Modifying flash DLL version 9.0.277.0 to appear as 10.0.45.2 is probably the only solution to allow Google StreetView to function properly on a non-KernelEx win-98se machine. This modification does not function when trying to view any video content on MSNBC.com and possibly (or probably) other yet-to-be-discovered sites.

If a solution does come about for this I am prepared to give it a go that will allow Google Street View and most other Flash sites to work and not just some. Do you think that will happen though?

  13. You never really answered the question on why I won't like Windows 7?

I do disagree with wsxedcrfv. I think you're gonna love Win 7.

In my understanding, using 9x/ME nowadays is solely for those that:

    (1) Cannot afford to upgrade;

    or

    (2) Love tweaking/configuring/messing around with 9x/ME and can have a great time therefrom or simply love 9x/ME.

You don't seem to belong to either group. To me it's clear you'd love to be using an OS that simply worked, for a change. Well, Win 7 fits the bill nicely. IMHO, you should go for it. I'm sure you'll never regret the move.

Thank you so much, I have seen Windows 7 and it looks really nice.

Can I ask you something about it, is it wise to go for 32 or 64 bit?

I ask as I would like some or all of my programs I currently use on my Windows 98 SE machine to work on Windows 7.

Also, does it come with Office, Excel & Word etc plus Microsoft Outlook? or will I need to ask the chap that will custom build it to add these for me?

By the way I think you have me thought of correctly as all I want is a system that works with the least of trouble, I really can't be bothered using solutions all the time to get things to work.

  14. I report the Google Street View is still working on my 98 machine after using the modded driver method and renaming the 2 instances of flash 9 in the registry.

I want to ask something about the KernelEx, and that is when it's un-installed, there is a message that comes up saying do you want to preserve any custom settings, I selected NO, but if I had selected YES, would that therefore mean the next time I installed KernelEx it would remember the last configuration?

By un-installing and saying NO does this mean that all changes made to the system by KernelEx have now been removed and the Kernel back to how it was previously?

  15. I have to give credit to wsxedcrfv, as I followed his instruction by renaming the 2 instances of flash 9 to version 10, this I didn't perform previously and now street view works without the need for KernelEx and having to update browsers.

So just to say that the renaming in regedit has to be done as the man says.

Thanks again wsxedcrfv, I may have to keep 98 after all.

Mind you some of the stuff you talk about is well over my head, perhaps you could teach me many things computer wise.

    PS,

I hope that google street view works for some time as I tried it for a test and the message appeared about needing flash 10, I was about to scream, but when I opened the browser again it worked the second time, I wonder why it appeared to be intermittent?

Something tells me though that when the Adobe message appears after a cold boot that asks you to download a new version of flash, that is when I think a change occurs, and that is when street view may perhaps not work again.

Perhaps we can all report back our findings on this.
