  1. This has baffled me for ages, at present I have the following Java Platform

    Standard Edition 6

    Version 6 Update 6

    (build 1.6.0_06-b02)

I have some questions, I believe there is an update 20 and 21, they say that 20 has the bug fixes, I have tried under windows 98 to install both but nothing happens when I click on install, and if I download the exe files a message appears about a missing shell something or other, so is there a way to download this under 98 without the need for KernelEx?

Also I notice that I have some updates to the version 5 showing under the add/remove program list, do they need to be there and can they be removed.

    I use Firefox 2

  2. If I recall, there are two different types of Flash Player, the "Active X" for IE and the "Plugin" for Mozilla/Firefox. Have you installed both?

    Joe.

Yes, I have installed Adobe® Flash® Player ActiveX Installer for I.E, and Adobe® Flash® Player Plugin Installer for FF, both are version 9.283.

  3. I am not afraid to install it, I did have it installed at one time, but it caused a problem and I can't remember what that was, but I needed to remove it, I may install this new version at some point though.

It would nicely solve all the endless issues you report with the old versions of flash and shockwave you are forced to use without it I guess. B)

Yeah I know, at least I know it's available when I really need it.

  4. First of all congratulations to continuous improvement of KernelEx, 4.5 RC4 incredible job, :thumbup

And 'sometimes unstable and there are no texts in the menu, but for the first time Windows 98 is under water..... :w00t:

Can you clarify what you mean by that regarding Windows 98?

I am not quite sure what he means by that but I take it that your question shows you're still afraid to install KernelEx.

  6. What is the latest Shockwave Flash that installs and works on Windows 98 S.E?

The version I have currently is 10.2r23

If there is another that installs and works without KernelEx it would be much appreciated.

Blogger have recently used Shockwave to browse ones own computer for files, and of course it doesn't work for me.

  7. Just noticed it says Recommended configuration for Opera:* Windows XP or later, how do we know it works on Windows 98?

I am thinking of giving up on Firefox and going for Opera, what is it like on Windows 98? do bookmarks work well within it, and does it ever crash?

It works fine here, and for other MSFN members. For me there's only one noticeable problem, which is that there is no flashing cursor within input boxes (such as the one I'm typing in now) to mark your place within text. This is a bit annoying, certainly, but not anything that prevents me using easily the best browser currently available for Windows 9x.

If I do go for Opera will I need to install all new Adobe Flash players again? I ask as I had to install the new 9.283 twice, once for Firefox 2, and again for Internet Explorer 6.

No. Opera will detect your 'Firefox', non_IE Flash installation, and will use that.

Thanks, does it easily import all bookmarks? and can it be un-installed easy if I don't like it for any reason without causing problems to my current Firefox.

Also I take it that it works without KernelEx being installed too?

  8. Internet Browsers

    Opera 10.62 released

Reason for me changing browser is that Blogger are using Flash to upload pics from the computer, and of course Flash 9.283 does not work with it, and I was thinking that perhaps a new browser may help.

  9. I still use Firefox 2.0.0.20 and of course Windows 98 S.E.

I noticed today that the display on the embedded BBC video player showed up in black, but the sound played fine, but after going to their home page and finally managing to view the player as a pop out it appeared to view correctly.

Why would that be, why work on the pop out but not when embedded on their web page?

I would imagine this is a Firefox version issue.

Importantly I have Flash player 9.280 installed.

  10. Is there a way to use Silverlight with Windows 98 SE?

We can read here, that it is compatible (only Silverlight 2, 3) with IE6 and Windows 2000 SP4+ (& KB 891861).

More and more sites are using it.

    maybe KernelEx?

Is there a search function on this forum? I couldn't find one, if I did I would have posted my question on this thread. I certainly don't have the time to search through every thread.

  11. Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but does there happen to be any Flac / Lossless verify testers available that work on Win 98 S.E?

Looking for a program that works on 98 that will verify if a file is true lossless or not.

  12. The last time I found myself in the same position I bought 2 optical mice brand name being TECHNIKA, the first one lasted about a year or two when the scroll button started to go wonky, so I added the second mouse and it's working as the first one did previously.

I found that after attaching the mouse windows asked for the 98 CD, of which I had to browse for a driver and it seemed to work from then on.

I believe it's attached as a HID Compliant mouse.

Not sure if TECHNIKA do this particular model any longer...TKOPTM2

Try a cheap one out of Asda, Tesco or wallmart.

  13. Just recently when I boot up it seems there is a problem with the Zlclient, in that out of the 2 programs that normally load in the system tray only the Avast icon loads, this problem is intermittent.

When this happens of course my internet connection is lost, when it happened at first I used to restart the computer, but now what I do is press alt ctrl delete, and finish the not responding task, then I go to the Zone Alarm program and open it, and doing this usually works and opens up my internet connection again plus Zone Alarm.

    Windows 98 S.E

    ZoneAlarm version:6.1.744.000

    TrueVector version:6.1.744.000

    Driver version:6.1.744.000

  14. As this is to do with Flash Player 9 I thought to ask this question.

I have Adobe Flash version 9.280 which is the very latest 9 series, I seem to be unable to view the flash on this link below, and yet when I click on the ok to upgrade it says the solution is to install version 9. 280, but I have this already.

Can someone confirm that using windows 98 and the latest flash 9 player they can view the flash video embedded in the link page below.

    My link

  15. So far, no problems with the latest version of KEX. Can't get Flash player plugin 10.1.53.64 to install. The installer doesn't seem to do anything at all. Tried uninstalling the old version, no change. Does the latest flash plugin work with the 1X versions of SeaMonkey?

You can install Flash Player 9, but use NPSWF32.dll from 10.1.

I can't get 10.1.53.64 to install due to an invalid page fault in kernel32.dll. But latest NPSWF32.dll works without problem.

Can I ask if you can get Google Street View to work using that driver on this KernelEx release?

I know there is a separate thread for the google street view problem, but I post this in relation to the new KernelEx.

  16. I thought there was meant to be a compatibility tab for all .exe files?

Why not in this case of Freecell.exe I wonder?

I think this is because it is 16bit exe, and Compatibility tab should appear for 32bit apps only. I thought KernelEx affects only 32bit apps...

Not sure, maybe Xeno86 can confirm this.

  17. Well, this kinda sucks:

The Win98 FreeCell solitaire game doesn't work with KernelEx 4.5 beta 2 or 4.5 RC 1.

    Sorry, I just tried here

    and don't have such corruptions:

function keys, Display, "Select game" function are OK.

    Freecell.exe version is 4.10.1998

And there's no compatibility tab on the Freecell.exe properties, so I can't just turn KernelEx off!

    Me too.

I thought there was meant to be a compatibility tab for all .exe files?

Why not in this case of Freecell.exe I wonder?

  18. Could the problem be the fan motor perhaps, and maybe it's running out?

The fan motor is fine, the bearings are not. The fan you hear is a non-ball bearing type fan, so, it's using bushings of zinc with copper that sell lubes the bearing. Now, after some time of use the bushings have more play, so they are resonating until the bushings get in place and they stop resonating. if it borders you, replace the fan, if you don't care, it can take months if not years for the fan to get stuck. There is nothing you really can do about it, even using machine oil will work for just a short time (it will drip out any way) as those bushings/bearings are not sealed. All is done to make those fans as cheap as posible ;).

Yeah, if it were to happen every day then I would do something about it. It is an old machine, coming up for nearly 10 years now, and I will hopefully be in a position to purchase a new computer sooner than later.

The thing is like I explained in the OP, once this noise has done it's part it then stops and nothing is heard apart from the normal computer power noise hard drive, and the fans running.

  19. Certainly a fan. By opening the computer, you can find out wetherer it's the CPU fan or one inside the PSU. Usually there is not much to do beside cleaning it when you can see the dust. Most the time it's inside on the axe and the noise doesn't go away. When running, components get hot and the shape of parts can change slightly enough to change the noise they make.

The thing is with it not happening for ages and when it does it only lasts for roughly between 1 to 3 minutes, so I would need to have the side cover off all the time which is not a good idea.

But I think you are right about it being a fan, and I am pretty sure it is the fan to the back of the tower.

Is there any special tools to clean the inside of a computer? I was told by a tech that it's best not to use the aerosols as these can blast the dust on to the motherboard.

Could the problem be the fan motor perhaps, and maybe it's running out?

Just one other thing, I subscribed to this thread, and yet I didn't get an email when you replied.

  20. Every so often and I may add probably once in every 6 months or so when I cold boot the computer sometime after the desktop has loaded a motor noise can be heard from inside the computer.

I then restart the computer and this makes no difference which leads me to believe that it's probably a fan problem, more often if I were to turn of the PC and cold boot again the noise would then be gone, but this morning the noise occurred, this time I rebooted to see what happened, and again the noise continued, but I didn't switch off the PC this time and left it running on restart, and the noise got quieter until it stopped completely and had gone.

Why does it just disappear completely on it's own, it's like it needs to run itself out till it's back running normal again, any ideas?

I would have thought that if it's down to a fan needing cleaned then it would have the noise all the time until the fan is cleaned. And it doesn't sound like a hard drive problem.

    Thought please?

    PS

I have had a new power supply fitted within the last 4 or 5 years.

  21. Google must have changed something to break it once they learned of it.

Lets go underground and not advertise the hacks\tweaks. Just a suggestion

    because they are watching us.

Sounds a good idea to me.

I suppose by keeping the config with the modded driver etc will be good so that it reports 10 instead of 9 for youtube videos, or doesn't it matter cause it's the browser that causes the occasional error?
